Abstract:With the rapid development of laser applications, single elements of diode lasers are not able to meet the increasing requirements on power and beam quality in the material processing and defense filed, whether are used as pumping sources or directly laser sources. The coupling source with high power and high beam quality, multiplexed by many single elements, has been proven to be a promising technical solution. In this paper, the authors review the development tendency of efficiency, power, and lifetime of laser elements firstly, and then introduce the progress of laser beam combining technology. The authors also present their recent progress on the high power diode laser sources developed by beam combining technology, including the 2600W beam combining direct laser source, 1000W fiber coupled semiconductor lasers and the 1000W continuous wave (CW) semiconductor laser sources with beam quality of 12.5×14[mm. mrad]2.

Impedance matching technique must be used to make the high frequency power enter into discharge load, so that the high frequency power obtained in the discharge load has a maximum value. Abstract:High-power fiber lasers have seen astonishingly rapid progress over the last decade.All-fiber laser systems are preferred for simplicity,compactness,robustness and reliability.Characterized by intrinsically low transmission loss,fused components are referred to the optimum choices.Losses can lead to catastrophic component failure due to localized heating at high power levels.The most meaningful benchmark,when considering the power handling of the component,is the capability of the component to handle optical power loss,rather than transmitted power.Design criterions of low transmission loss are described both in single-mode components and multi-mode components.Some advices about package design are proposed.

Abstract:The elegant characteristics of the laser diode and its limits are introduced based on the analyzing of the advantages and disadvantages of the HeNe laser.In order to improve the performance of laser diode,the students are guided to collimate and shape the laser diode beam with available devices in the laboratory.Some experiments,such as the fabrication of holographic grating and lens,the electro-optic modulation and liquid crystal light valve modulation,are carried out with the improved laser diode.The results indicate that the improved laser diode can replace the He-Ne laser and meet the requirements of synthetic experiments on optical information.

Abstract:The quasi-phase-matching (QPM) technique has drawn increasing attention due to its promising applications in areas such as nonlinear frequency conversion for generating new laser light sources. In this paper, we will briefly review the main achievements in this field. Wegive a brief introduction of the invention of QPM theory, followed by the QPM-material fabrication techniques. When combing QPM with the solid-state laser techniques, various laser light sources, such as single-wavelength visible lasers and ultraviolet lasers, red-green-blue three-fundamentalcolor lasers, optical parametric oscillators in different temporal scales, and passive mode-locking lasers based on cascaded second-order nonlinearity, have been presented. Abstract:With the increase of information capacity of an airborne system, high speed driving of laser diodes have been of interest. In order to match the low resistive LD, proposed in this paper is an exponential transmission line, which is used as preshaping to compensate the pattern effect in gain switching of laser diodes. It also will be used to overcome the effect of parasitic elements in high speed driving to improve the rise and trail edges of the output waveform. An accurate circuit model of the exponential line for the PSPICE program has been developed and simulations are conveniently carried out by employing PSPICE.

Abstract:High brightness, high power tapered diode-laser regularly consists of an index-guided ridge-waveguide section and a gain-guide tapered section. The gain match between the ridge and tapered sections were studied in this paper. The gain peak wavelength of the ridge section is expected to be larger than that in the tapered section because of the higher optical power density by numerical simulation. It is found that the gain peak mismatch between the ridge and tapered sections results in broadened optical spectra and low output powers according to the experimental results. The mismatch is suppressed by lowering the junction temperature of the ridge section which shifts the gain peak of the ridge section to a shorter wavelength. Alternatively, the shift of the gain spectra was also realized by increasing the transparency carrier density with an additional optical loss in the ridge waveguide introduced by He + ion implantation. Tapered diode lasers with such designs have a beam quality factor M 2 (1/e 2 ) = 1.1 with an output power of 8 W and a narrow spectra width of 2 nm.

Abstract:As the beam envelope mismatch is the major source of the halo formation and the related emittance growth in high intensity linac, some extensions based on the four-step method are developed, and the causes of beam mismatch in RFQ are analyzed and a matching dynamics method is proposed to minimize the emittance growth and the related beam loss. A dynamics example is given to prove this design method.

Abstract:A new testing system of CW/QCW high-power laser diode arrays (HLDA)'s divergence angle was presented. The testing system included driving power, water cooling system, module of adjusting to center, detector and data acquisition module etc. The most important part of this testing system was detector for laser signal. It was designed by ourselves and made of two hemicycle probes. Two key problems of existing methods were resolved by this system. First, testing error induced by looking HLDA as point light Source was reduced. Second, the problem that detector was shattered or burned because of high rower was resolved. Besides data acquisition module contained two suits of disposing processes, in order to test divergence angle of either CW or QCW HLDA.

Abstract:High power diode lasers (HPDLs) offer the highest wall-plug efficiency, highest specific power (power-to-weight ratio), arguably the lowest cost and highest reliability among all laser types. However, the poor beam quality of commercially HPDLs is the main bottleneck limiting their direct applications requiring high brightness at least in one dimension. In order to expand the applications of HPDLs, beam shaping and optical design are essential. In this work, we report the recent progresses on maximizing applications of HPDLs by synergizing diode laser light source and beam shaping micro-optics. Successful examples of matching of diode laser light sources and beam shaping micro-optics driving new applications are presented.

Abstract:High-speed optoelectronic devices are key components of modern fiber communication systems, and the backbone of information technology. In this paper, we present our work on high-speed devices over the past decades, including high-performance semiconductor lasers and integrated light sources, wideband electro-optic modulators, high saturation power photodetectors, and their applications in both fiber communications and microwave photonics. Gain-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) lasers were fabricated with high single-mode yield. Electroabsorption modulated lasers (EMLs) were demonstrated based on identical epitaxial layer integration scheme, including single channel 40 Gb/s EMLs, and 4 × 25 and 4 × 56 Gb/s EML arrays. Both InP and thin-film lithium niobate based low half-wave voltage electro-optic modulators with modulation bandwidth over 40 GHz were demonstrated. Back-illuminated modified uni-traveling-carrier photodetectors (MUTC-PDs) with high saturation power and bandwidth exceeding 100 GHz were developed. Applications of high-speed optoelectronic devices in fiber-optic links and sub-THz wave generation are presented.

Abstract:High-order transverse-mode lasers have important potential application value in many fields. To address the current issue of the limited controllability of modes in high-order transverse-mode lasers, we have designed a self-matching photonic lantern (SMPL). The SMPL is formed by introducing a few-mode fiber into the input fiber array of the traditional photonic lantern. The parameters of the few-mode fiber match those of the tapered few-mode port of the SMPL; thus, it can transmit high-order modes in a closed loop. The designed SMPL exhibits dual-band multiplexing characteristics at 980/1550 nm, manifesting specifically as high-order mode selectivity excitation at 980 nm and mode preservation at 1550 nm. These characteristics have been validated through simulation and preliminary experiments. The SMPL is designed for constructing all few-mode fiber ring cavity lasers, enabling the pumping of the 980 nm fundamental mode to high-order modes and the transmission of multiple high-order transverse-mode lasers at 1550 nm in a closed loop. The proposed SMPL extends the configuration and functionality of the photonic lantern family, offering a flexible and effective approach to facilitate the generation of multiple high-order transverse-mode lasers. The SMPL combined with fiber laser systems could effectively broaden communication channels and enhance communication bandwidth. It also holds significant value in optical sensing, high-resolution imaging, laser micro-processing, and other fields.

Abstract:In order to meet the requirements of the new laser radar and laser active lighting for the miniaturized line light source, a linear laser light source that can be transmitted over long distances has been successfully designed and prepared. This linear laser light source is based on 808nm semiconductor laser. Firstly, a set of orthogonal placement plano-convex aspherical lens is used for collimating the laser beam of gauss distribution, thus the parallel beams that can be transmitted over long distances is obtained, and then through the Powell prism. Finally, the semiconductor laser is shaped into a laser light source with the slender and uniform intensity distribution. And we also have carried out an example design simulation with the Zemax optical design software and built an experimental system, and a laser light source has been successfully prepared with the divergence angles 54° of the fast directions and the uniformity 23.5% of the linear spot. The experimental results can match the Zemax simulation results well, which proves that the design method in this article is correct, simple and useful.
Development of the practicable broadband laser diode module and studies on its characteristics

Abstract:Using DC-PBH laser diode (LD), the broadband LD module of practicable package type was developed. The LD module was studied and measured on the packaged LD model, involving small signal frequency modulation characteristics and nonlinear distortion. Its optical resonance is 3 dB, and bandwidth is more than 2GHz. This device can satisfy the bandwidth requirements in the optical fiber communication system and can be used in the GHz microwave subcarrier multiplex optical fiber communication system.

Abstract:The 1.55 μm waveband integrated external cavity tunable diode lasers have excellent merits such as their small volume, low cost, low power consumption, wide tuning range, narrow linewidth, large side mode suppression ratio, and high output power. These merits have attracted many applications for the lasers, such as in wavelength division multiplexing, passive optical networks, mobile backhaul, and spectral sensing technology. In this paper, firstly, the basic structure and principle of integrated external cavity tunable diode lasers are introduced, and then two main integrated structures of 1.55 μm waveband external cavity tunable diode lasers are reviewed and compared in detail, namely the hybrid integrated structure and monolithic integrated structure of 1.55 μm waveband integrated external cavity tunable diode lasers. Finally, the research progress in 1.55 μm waveband integrated external cavity tunable diode lasers in the last decade are summarised, and the advantages and disadvantages of 1.55 μm waveband integrated external cavity tunable diode lasers are analysed. The results show that, with the transformation of optical communication into more complex modulation formats, it is necessary to integrate miniature 1.55 μm waveband external cavity tunable diode lasers. Low-cost integrated 1.55 μm waveband external cavity tunable diode lasers are expected to be used in the next generation of optical transceivers in small-factor modules.

Abstract:This paper presents the pre-matching and matching approach for RF LDMOS device in designing of high-power RF amplifier. A pre-matching circuit in flange and an input/output matching circuit on PCB have been developed for one RF LDMOSFET, so that it can be matched to the system characteristic impedance of 50Ω within a given frequency range of 869~960MHz. The measured results show that this RF LDMOS amplifier provides a 1dB gain compression point output power (P1dB) higher than 48.8dBm, a corresponding DC to RF conversion efficiency better than 66.4% and the third-order intermodulation (IM3) less than -30dBc.

Abstract:Fiber pump lasers are widely used in a variety of fields, such as optical fiber communication, national defense, and medical beauty due to their high beam quality and intense laser energy. However, the alignment errors of optical parameters can influence the beam quality in the packaging of the fiber pump lasers. It is necessary to analyze the reflector, focusing lens, fiber, and the laser diode on the coupling influence between for guiding the fiber pump laser packaging. Firstly, we establish the optical path between the laser diode, focusing lens and reflector based on the physical ray-tracing method. On the other hand, the high coupling efficiency of whole system is achieved by optimize the parameters of each optical element. The simulation result shows that the highest coupling efficiency is 98.6% based on optimizing the parameters of the optical path while the experimental result of coupling efficiency is 90.36%. Also, the effects of refractive index, wavelength and fiber diameter on coupling efficiency are further investigated. The experimental results show that the radial displacement has the greatest influence on the coupling efficiency. The simulation results show that increasing the fiber core diameter can effectively improve the coupling efficiency. The results of rigorous analysis will provide an effective reference for manufacturing compact, high coupling efficiency fiber pumped laser.
