Abstract:Configurable parameterized System-On-a-Chip (SoC) design using industry standard Hardware Description Language (HDL) is complicate and hard to maintain. A Domain-specific Language (DSL) named MetaHDL was presented for synthesizable functional description of configurable digital Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuits, ranging from logic oriented low-level module design to Intellectual Property (IP) based SoC integration. MetaHDL uses inference and parameter tracing technologies and has specific optimizations for circuit's structure and functional descriptions, so as to improve language expressiveness, code readability and maintainability, and achieved over 65% code reduction. MetaHDL provides a two-level code configuration system consisting comprehensive preprocessor and parameter tracing mechanism to ease the reuse-oriented module design and IP integration. MetaHDL has been used in the Unified Threat Management (UTM) chip development project, addressed various design challenges of complex reuse scenarios, and improved the project efficiency and quality.

Abstract:A behavioral model of an optical bit-interleaving time-division multiplexing (OTDM) for transport data using VHDL is described. VHDL simulation results are given for mode-locked laser, splitter, modulator, combiner, etc. Both electronic and optical signals are required in the same environment in order to describe and simulate such an electro-optical system. Moreover, component level models of devices such as laser diodes, separator, regenerator, fiber, fiber amplifier, etc., can be implemented or incorporated in a more detailed model of OTDM networks.

Abstract:Traditional C-like hardware description languages are based on single dimensional computing model. They describe only behavior of designs, while cost information is leaved to be digging out by a synthesizer at late stage of design process. However, cost information is needed in high level synthesis for making trade-off among different aspects of cost to achieve global optimized design. To solve the problem, we extended traditional computing model to multi-dimensional so cost information can be included in the language, and integrated it to a popular C++ variant hardware description language - SystemC. The result language describes both behavior and cost of designs so trade-off can be made at relative high level during synthesis process and early stage of design process, thus make it easy to optimize designs for different target applications.

Abstract:Finite state machine is needed in nearly all the CAD system. switch,case clause are used to design the corresponding statechart diagrams in normal CAD systems. But it can easily cause logical confusion and it is difficult for developers to design and test the modules of the statemachine. To some extent,it will prevent us from synactic developing. A normal finite state machine can be designed just as draw a statechart diagrams with the machine class mentioned in the paper,and with lesslogical confusion. The nested state machine based on the normal state machine allows synatic developing and module testing, it can improve the efficiency of development.

Abstract:A new graphical representation, the Control Structure Diagram (CSD), has been created to visualize software at both the source code and program design language (PDL) level. The primary impetus for creation of the CSD was to improve the comprehension efficiency of software and, as a result, improve reliability and reduce costs. The CSD has the potential to replace traditional prettyprinted source code. As part of the GRASP (Graphical Representations of Algorithms, Structures, and Processes) research project at Auburn University, the GRASP software engineering tool has been successfully developed. GRASP automatically generates CSDs from source code written in Ada, C, C++, Java, and VHDL. The emphasis to this point has been on the automatic generation of the CSD to support development, maintenance, reverse engineering and reengineering through the use of GRASP. GRASP has been applied successfully to numerous programs ranging in size from several hundred to several thousand lines of source code and is efficient and sufficiently flexible for use in a production setting. To demonstrate the potential benefits of the CSD and its automatic generation using GRASP, a series of empirical studies has been planned and initiated. First, as reported in this article, the perceived usefulness of the CSD was evaluated using a preference instrument based on eleven performance characteristics in which a comparison was made with other well-known graphical representations for algorithms. Statistical analysis indicated numerous significant differences with a clear preference for the CSD in seven of the eleven performance characteristics. Further empirical studies, currently being implemented, will examine the effect of the CSD and GRASP on objective measures such as comprehension efficiency and effectiveness.

Abstract:Electrical design automation (EDA) techniques have deeply influenced the computer hardware design, especially in the field of very large scale Integration (VLSI) circuits. Particularly, the popularity of FPGA, ASIC and SOC applications have been dramatically increased due to the well developed EDA tool chains. Over decades, improving EDA tool in terms of functionality, efficiency, accuracy and intelligence is not only the academic research hot spot, but the industry attempting goal as well. In this paper, a novel perspective is taken to review current mainstream EDA working flow and design methods, aiming to shorten the EDA design periods and simplify the logic design overload significantly. Specifically, three major contributions are devoted. First, a Chinese character based representation system (CCRS), which is used for presenting logical abstract syntax tree, is proposed. Second, the register-transfer-level (RTL) level symbolic description technique for CCRS are introduced to replace traditional text-based programming methods. Finally, the refined EDA design flow based on CCRS is discussed. It is convincing that the graphic non-pure-english based EDA flow could lower the design cost and complexity. As a fundamental trial in this new field, it is confirmative that a lot of following works will make the related EDA development prosperous.

Abstract:C is the main language for the system description in system design. In the software/hardware co-verification at the system level and the following software/hardware partition, interface integration and behavior integration, it is necessary to convert the C language to control/data flow graph. In this paper, the model for control/data flow graph and the method to generate this model from C are proposed. There are three levels in this hierarchical model for HCDFG-II: function/process level, statement level and operation level, corresponding to different level models based on different requirements. The method to generate HCDFG-II is also discussed for the various control structures and array, pointer, unite, structure and so on.
A Hierarchical CDFG As Intermediate Representation for Hardware/software Codesign

Abstract:A hierarchical CDFG model designed as an intermediate representation for hardware/software (HW/SW) codesign is presented in this paper. A new concept of transport node, which represents the communication resources of the system, is proposed in this model. Hierarchical feature can be straightly obtained through extending the definition of nodes, allowing them to nest sub-CDFG recursively. Then it is demonstrated how to build basic control constructs of branches and loops. Explaining in a short introduction to the translation process, such a hierarchical CDFG is suitable for HW/SW codesign as an intermediate representation. The hierarchical CDFG model can capture the design information from source file specified by VHDL or C language. It maintains relative simplicity while providing helpful features for HW/SW partitioning and High-level synthesis tools.

However, previous definitions of the data flow diagram have not provided a comprehensive way to represent the behavior and structure of hardware. This paper describes an improved data flow diagram which provides notations, syntactic rules and semantic interpretations for hardware description. It is a kind of visual language and supports mixed-level and hierarchical description, module configuration, attribute specification, multilevel timing specification.

Abstract:The data flow computation is friendly to parallel processing. However, modeling of an asynchronous data flow processor in very-large-scale-integrated-circuit (VLSI) design often needs specific tools. This paper will propose a data flow architecture and a modeling method that uses common describe language-SystemC. The proposed architecture is composed of some similar units, called hold-match-fetch components. The model involves SystemC models of tokens, channels, operation units and hold-match-fetch components. The architecture and modeling method were used in a data flow advanced-encryption-standard (AES) application-specified-integrated-circuit (ASIC) implementation successfully.

Abstract:Electronic circuits design is extremely important in information processing or communication systems. Classical design method of electronic circuit is manual programming. The cost of design and test is usually expensive, especially for large scale or complicated circuits. In this paper, hardware circuit is designed by formal method. Behavior of the circuit is described by multiple extended hierarchical finite automata(EHFA) that execute in parallel. The correctness of the system can be verified by simulation. Then, the formal model is converted into VHDL automatically. Finally get the real circuit. The advantages of the method make it easier to simulate functional design and verify critical performance. As a practical application, the Multifunction Vehicle Bus (MVB) circuit is codesigned, which illustrate the practicality of this method.

Abstract:The design of safety-critical cyber-physical systems (CPSs) involve several dimensions, including physics, hardware rchitecture and software functionality. It is desirable to design CPSs by taking these issues into account uniformly and yet, few existing design workflows support this aim. For instance, AADL is an architecturecentric modelling formalism for CPSs, which focuses on modelling architecture and prototyping real-time hardware platforms, but it delegates physical and software behavioral models to so-called annexes. By contrast, Simulink/Stateflow (S/S) focuses on modelling interacting physical and software behaviors, but does not render the non-functional characteristics of their hardware platforms. To address this issue, in [1], we proposed the combination of AADL and S/S, called AADL S/S, to comodel CPSs and presented a method to uniformly analyse and verify them. AADL S/S provides a unified graphical co-modelling environment for CPS design and supports simulation through C code generation. Also, [1] presented a formal semantics of AADL S/S by translation to Hybrid Communicating Sequential Processes (HCSP), yielding a deductive verification framework of the combined models using Hybrid Hoare Logic (HHL). Additionally, [1] proved the correctness of the translation of AADL S/S to HCSP.

Abstract:In all-digital-phase-locked loops(ADPLL),the scale of the system composed of digitally controlled oscillator(DCO) and sigma-delta modulator(SDM) is too big to be simulated in traditional circuit level with current EDA tools.Therefore,the method of behavioral modeling of the DCO system based on Verilog-A was presented.A behavioral modeling method of each block in the system was introduced,and the key codes of each block modeling were given.The results show that those models can improve simulating efficiency and simulate the actual system well.Therefore,the behavioral modeling method is practical and can be used to guide the realization of the system.

Abstract:When used for specifying control systems, system level design tools such as Xilinx System Generator (XSG) allows the use of Simulink for designs based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). This increases productivity by reducing the wide gap between control system designers and FPGA-based implementations. However, there is still a need for new methods to bridge the gap since a direct implementation from XSG may not be an optimal solution when constraints are imposed. This is particularly true for resource-dominated circuits, where the number of operational units exceed the number of available resources. This paper presents both a methodology and a tool aimed at automatically reducing the required resources, in particular in systems where the required sampling period is greater than the computation time delay. An automatic process of converting XSG specifications into efficient Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) code is described. The process mainly involves customized fixed-point hardware definition, Data Flow Graph (DFG) extraction, resource-constrained and latency-constrained scheduling and VHDL specification of the system, inter alia. This solution considerably improves on the results obtained by XSG.

Abstract:Dataflow computing model or dataflow model is well fit for developing virtual-instrument-oriented Visual Programming Languages (VPL) because of its descriptive power on the data processing issues and its intuitiveness to users. Most Visual Programming Languages are based on Dynamic Homogeneous Dataflow (DHDF), but the homogeneous Dataflow cannot work properly with event-driven operating system, which leads to inefficiency in use of CPU and low responding speed to external events. Based on Event-Triggered Concurrent Dataflow (ECDF) model, a virtual-instrument-oriented visual programming language E is presented. Multi-Thread, hardware event, blocking I/O and overlapped I/O are supported by this language. Six different types of Virtual Instrument Controls (VIC) for different operation model including dual communication model based on single resource are described. Experiments proved that E language had a high availability and short response time, as well as a strong descriptive power on Virtual Instrument Systems.
Visual Designing and Debugging of Deterministic Finite-State Machines in FSM

Abstract:This article presents a visualization tool for designing and debugging deterministic finite-state machines in FSM -- a domain specific language for the automata theory classroom. Like other automata visualization tools, users can edit machines and observe their execution, given some input. Unlike other automata visualization tools, the user is not burdened nor distracted with rendering a machine as a graph. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on the design of machines and this article presents a novel design recipe for deterministic finite-state machines. In support of the design process, the visualization tool allows for each state to be associated with an invariant predicate. During machine execution, the visualization tool indicates if the proposed invariant holds or does not hold after each transition. In this manner, students can validate and debug their machines before attempting to prove partial correctness or submitting for grading. In addition, any machine edited with the visualization tool can be rendered as executable code. The interface of the visualization tool along with extended examples of its use are presented.

The features of the tool are its user friendly interface based on Motif under X Window system, a capability to high-level debugging, a capability to support many methods to set breakpoints, selective enabling and disabling of breakpoints, single stepping and trace mode, a capability to display source code, simulation results, and graphical views such as schematic diagram and design hierarchical diagram synchronically, a capability to view the current values of signals or variables and change them, a capability of visualization of simulation results, and a capability to view the waveform of results while simulating.
FSM Modeling of Synchronous VHDL Design for Symbolic Model Checking

Abstract:In this paper, we defined a new FSM model based on the synchronous behavior and symbolic representation technique. The algorithm to elaborate the model from the VHDL description of synchronous circuits is presented. By eliminating the unnecessary transition function, our model has much less states than Deharbe's mixed model. The experimental results demonstrate the model and modeling method can make symbolic model checking more practical.

Abstract:Synchronous embedded systems are becoming more and more complicated and are usually implemented with integrated hardware/software solutions. This implementation manner brings new challenges to the traditional model-driven design environments such as SCADE and STATEMATE, that supports pure hardware or software design.In this paper, we propose a co-design tool Tsmart-Edola to facilitate the system developers, and automatically generate the executable VHDL code and C code from the formal verified SyncBlock computation model. SyncBlock is a lightweight high-level system specification model with well defined syntax, simulation and formal semantics. Based on which, the graphical model editor, graphical simulator, verification translator, and code generator are implemented and seamlessly integrated into the Tsmart-Edola. For evaluation, we apply Tsmart-Edola to the design of a real-world train controller based on the international standard IEC 61375. Several critical ambiguousness or bugs in the standard are detected during formal verification of the constructed system model. Furthermore, the generated VHDL code and C code of Tsmart-Edola outperform that of the state-of-the-art tools in terms of synthesized gate array resource consumption and binary code size.
