Abstract:Collaborative software development is called for to meet the requirement of the increasingly expanding software scale. A more advanced software development environment is needed to support the collaborative software development activity. The contribution of this paper is an architecture of process-centered context-aware software development environment, called CASDE, which effectively supports the collaborative development activity. We first discuss the software development activity using activity theory, and highlight its collaborative features. We then present the architecture of CASDE with a brief introduction to its key elements. The focus of the architecture lies in its support to the three levels of collaboration, i.e., co-ordinated level, cooperative level, and co-constructive level. Due to its supportive and integrated nature, the architecture can support collaboration effectively. CASDE is believed to be able to play a positive role in supporting the collaborative software development activity and improving the quality of software systems.

Abstract:An evolutionary development model MHSC/DM (methodology for high-level specification construction) is proposed based on MHSC, which supports the executable specification, while the composing roles and their interrelations are illustrated too. This paper addresses the transformation classification, system generation and configuration, and the model's architecture. The development model can be used to support automatic generation of prototype system quite well from evolution requirements and can keep system consistent.

Abstract:Software development is considered to be a kind of collaborative activity now. In this paper, we first analyze the software development activity using activity theory, and highlight its collaborative features. We then propose an architecture of process-centered context-aware software development environment, CASDE, which fully considers the key elements of PCSDEs, especially the context element. The supportive and integrated nature of the environment is emphasized in CASDE. As illustrated in activity theory, the architecture can support the three levels of collaboration, i.e., co-ordinated, co-operative, and co-constructive level. In particular, the co-operative level is supported sufficiently by the introduction of context model and context process mechanism. Based on the architecture, the software development activity can be more collaborative and quality of software system can be improved

Abstract:CVE makes collaborative feature modeling among multi-users possible, but the token-passing method that most of current collaborative feature modeling systems use as its collaborative strategy makes the design inflexible and inefficient. Based on the analysis of feature operation in collaborative environment, we propose a new method to solve the conflicts and define a process for non-locked multi-user collaborative design. Based on this method, we have implemented a prototype system integrating C++, Java3D and VML, CORBA technologies to achieve flexibility and efficiency in CVE for feature based modeling.

Abstract:In the recent years, the hardware technology, high bandwidth network and 3D graphics systems bring the virtual reality (VR) technology into a new field: collaborative virtual environment (CVE). This field's goal is to use computers as tools for communication and information share. CVE is different from distributed virtual environment (DVE), it concerns more about the collaboration and the consistency in the cooperative work. And Java 3D is a new 3D technology, it offers a simple way to build up other virtual environments, and make the cooperation between the users easier to realize and control. By leveraging the inherent strengths of the Java language, Java 3D technology extends the concept of "write once, run anywhere" to 3D graphics applications, which makes the applications be independent of the hardware and software plat flat. So we put forward a new framework of the CVE system based on Java 3D technology. In this framework, we give a system architecture to realize scalability, persistence, consistency, and other requirements in CVE, and further more, it can realize complex cooperative works.

Abstract:The product exchange data technology is an important base for a heterogeneous collaborative design. A new feature-based CAD data exchange technology is presented, which is based on mapping of modeling function set. This approach ensures efficient data exchange among heterogeneous CAD systems, and high-level design intent of designer is reserved. This paper put forwards a collaborative design system which based on the feature-based CAD data exchange. Some key technologies, modeling sharing, collaborative design agent are researched. Lastly, collaborative design-implementing is proposed.

Abstract:A novel theoretical model of the component agent was proposed based on multi-layer finite state machine (FSM) and the requirements of collaborative design. And a new collaborative design-oriented product data model (CDPDM) was put forward. The CDPDM included three basic data modules (function data, structure data and management data) and a remote data modification module. This model had five characteristics: neutral representation, reusability, knowledge engineering, remote data modification and self-management. By combining the theoretical agent model with the CDPDM, a product component agent frame was proposed and some key issues, e. g. environment model construction, program and data encapsulation, software reuse and strategy set organization, were discussed. The practical application in demonstration enterprise shows that the proposed system can enhance the ability of the collaborative product design.

Abstract:Virtual reality is now becoming matured for serious engineering applications. This paper describes an integrated multi-modal virtual design and virtual assembly environment within which the designers are enabled to create both the exact solid model of a part and the assembly model of a product in 3D space by direct 3D manipulations and voice commands intuitively and easily. Assembly planning can also be performed by users interactively in the environment. By integrating virtual assembly with virtual design, designers are allowed to modify components of an assembly in the same virtual environment without the need of time-consuming data exchange between virtual environment and CAD tools.

Abstract:This research focuses on a multidisciplinary collaborative modeling and simulation (M&S) approach for virtual prototyping. The design of complex product is supported by this approach in the distributed network environment. HLA and web services technologies are employed in our approach for interoperability and reusability of the M&S system. A HLA and web services based framework to support multidisciplinary M&S and its key technologies are presented. A consistent modeling method is studied. The interoperability issue of this approach is also discussed. A typical application demonstration of multidisciplinary collaborative M&S for the virtual prototyping of locomotive development is introduced. The demonstration of prototype system shows that HLA and web services are effective inftrastures for collaborative M&S and they are promising for a new paradigm for collaborative design of complex product.

Abstract:E-collaboration and collaborative systems bring geographically dispersed teams together, and support communication, coordination and cooperation among the enterprises. Based on the collaborative design system developed by the author's lab for some automotive parts company in China, several key technologies for developing enterprise collaborative manufacturing platform (ECMP) are presented. A multi-layer architecture of ECMP is established, and the workflow of ECMP is designed. The application integration with Web services technology is explained. A four-layered ontology model for information description in ECMP is proposed. The method of constructing dynamic alliance based on multi-agent theory, and the strategies of task scheduling optimization are discussed. Finally, an application case of ECMP prototypical system is introduced

Abstract:The development of complex product is essentially concerned with multidisciplinary knowledge and requires computer supported cooperation among the designers. A multidisciplinary collaborative modeling and simulation (M&S) technology is an effective approach for the design and development of the complex product. The challenge now faced is how to apply the multidisciplinary M&S in the systematic level of complex product development. The key issue is how to integrate the heterogeneous, autonomous software tools in a distributed environment. In this paper, we propose a high level architecture (HLA) and web services based framework for multidisciplinary collaborative design in a distributed environment. The process of multidisciplinary collaborative design project is principally analyzed. A modeling and simulation platform with the focus of multidisciplinary collaborative design is present. Besides its key technologies of HLA and web services based integration are studied. The interoperability issue to this research is also discussed.

Abstract:Evaluation and planning of assembly processes in virtual environments have become an active research area in engineering community. However, planning of complex assemblies in virtual environments, especially large-scale virtual environments, is still hindered by limitations like unnatural user interaction, insufficient frame rates, and deficiencies in processing of assembly constraints. In this paper, we present MIVAS, a Multi-modal Immersive Virtual Assembly System. By viewing the virtual assembly system as a finite state machine, we incorporate tracked devices, force feedback dataglove, voice commands, human sounds, fully immersive 4-sided CAVE, together with optimization techniques for both complex assembly models and assembly operations to provide for engineers an intuitive and natural way of assembly evaluation and planning. Testing scenarios on disassembling different components of an intelligent hydraulic excavator are described. Special attention is paid upon such technical issues as interface between CAD packages and the CAVE virtual environment, natural and intuitive user interaction including realistic virtual hand interaction and force feedback, intelligent navigation for assembly operations, and real-time display of complex assemblies.

Abstract:The design information provided by feature based modeling facilitates bridging the gap between engineering design and manufacturing. This paper, based on the feature modeling system ZD_MCADII, introduces the function requirements and general architecture of a modern CAD system, and proposes a scheme of combining geometric modeling with feature modeling, and combining feature based design with feature recognition. It also offers an approach of implementing feature edition and feature library based on spatial constraints.

Abstract:This paper puts forward a kind of novel methodology for software system development, from the point of view of the problem existed in software development -- the gap between the requirement specification level and the program implementation level. We attempt to begin from the specification level of software development to touch the process of high-level specification construction profoundly. We propose a specification language to support multiple semantic dimensions and based on which build a unified functional model of software system in a specific domain. On the bases of these, we apply transformation and refinement methods to the model and transit it from the specification level to the implementation level. We expect such a process can change the current software producing procedure in nature. We also put this methodology into the application of the software development in real-time serving domain we focus on, which turns out to be encouraging.

Abstract:Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) with SysML has become one of the best solutions to the system design of complex systems, which usually requires the collaboration of different disciplines. Web-based collaborative modeling method looks like a prioritized option because of its advantages such as "light" client, convenient maintenance, and high model reliability. In this study, we propose a web-based collaborative SysML modeling method for MBSE. First, the architectures of asynchronous and synchronous collaboration are given. Then, some key technologies for both collaborative modes are discussed. Finally, a case study is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract::After the analysis of the function framework of collaborative product development platform and the various collaboration modes, the distributed computing model of collaborative design and simulation platform for multidiscipline virtual prototyping is proposed. Moreover, the realization technologies on collaborative development's running management, collaborative development's resources management, and distributed data's collaborative and interactive management are studied in detail. A prototyping system, based on the modelling and simulation tools of COM/DCOM, the database design and CORBA application implementation technology, is developed. The system can support the information integration among the distributed and heterogeneous modeling and simulation tools of different application under Internet environment, and allow the collaborative design and simulation of complex product's virtual prototyping.

Abstract:In order to satisfy the various applicational requirements in a network environment, a multi-mode collaborative design method is proposed. Based on XML and VRML technology, the implement method of product data sharing and integration is also discussed. A general type net-based collaborative product design support system called CoDesign Space is designed, and the system architecture and realization method are presented. The CoDesign Space system has a flexible and extendable three-tier B/S architecture. Meanwhile, the system can satisfy the requirements of geographically dispersed collaborative design in many ways by integrating several collaborative design support tools that can be used independently.
