Abstract:The recent progresses in microwave ceramics were reviewed. Three material systems, which are widely investigated at present, were generally outlined. The composition, processing, properties and applications of the systems were summarized, and future developments of microwave ceramics was proposed.

Abstract:The technology in modern mobile communication, wireless local area networks and global position system for mobile communication has been innovated rapidly, which asks the microwave electronic components based on microwave dielectric ceramics to have better performances. In recent years, microwave dielectric ceramic components with the characteristics of miniature, high frequency, chip level, module form and the related dielectric ceramics have been developed fast. The progresses and problems in microwave dielectric ceramics of high frequency, high dielectric constant or low-temperature sintering are reviewed. The structures and dielectric characteristics of various material systems are studied. The changing regularities of the dielectric characteristics and structures of microwave dielectric ceramics based on the ion substitutions are analyzed. The progress and production of microwave dielectric ceramic components for dielectric resonance, multilayer structure and functional module are described. Those materials and components related with low temperature co-fired technology are discussed emphatically. The relationship between microwave components structure and microwave characteristics is investigated. The future prospects of the material and its applications are provided.

Abstract:The structure and properties of low-temperature co-fired ceramics systems such as BiNbO4,MO-TiO2 (M= Mg,Zn,Ba),AB2O6 (A=Ba,Mg,Zn,B=Nb,Ta),MO-SiO2 (M=Ca,Mg,Zn),CaO-Li2O-Nb2O5-TiO2,and BaO-Ln2O3-TiO2 (Ln=Sm,Nd) are reviewed. The method,mechanism and existent problems of decreasing the sintering temperature of microwave dielectric ceramics are discussed. The properties of low-temperature co-fired ceramics are analyzed. The recent progress on chip multilayer microwave components such as filters,antenna and resonators is introduced. The future prospects of low-temperature co-fired ceramic microwave dielectric ceramics and their components are provided.

Abstract:Abstract The explosive process of 5G communication evokes the urgent demand of miniaturized and integrated dielectric ceramics filter. It is a pressing need to advance the development of dielectric ceramics utilization of emerging technology to design new materials and understand the polarization mechanism. This review provides the summary of the study of microwave dielectric ceramics (MWDCs) sintered higher than 1000 from 2010 up to now, °C with the purpose of taking a broad and historical view of these ceramics and illustrating research directions. To date, researchers endeavor to explain the structure-property relationship of ceramics with multitude of approaches and design a new formula or strategy to obtain excellent microwave dielectric properties. There are variety of factors that impact the permittivity, dielectric loss, and temperature stability of dielectric materials, covering intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Many of these factors are often intertwined, which can complicate new dielectric material discovery and the mechanism investigation. Because of the various ceramics systems, pseudo phase diagram was used to classify the dielectric materials based on the composition. In this review, the ceramics were firstly divided into ternary systems, and then brief description of the experimental probes and complementary theoretical methods that have been used to discern the intrinsic polarization mechanisms and the origin of intrinsic loss was mentioned. Finally, some perspectives on the future outlook for high-temperature MWDCs were offered based on the synthesis method, characterization techniques, and significant theory developments.

Abstract:Silica-based ceramics have been explored extensively as a class of versatile materials for various applications in architecture, catalysis, energy, machinery, and biomedical engineering. Nevertheless, comprehensive information on silica-based ceramic and electromagnetic microwave (EMW) absorption is scarce, although excellent progress has been made in this field. Here, recent progress in the investigation of silica-based ceramics toward EMW absorption is reviewed. We first introduced the basis of ceramics (characteristics, classification, synthetic methods, potential applications). Subsequently, the silica-based ceramics, including Si-based oxides and alloys, SiOC/SiC/Si3N4/SiCN-based composite, Ti3SiC2 and composite for EMW absorption were systematically summarized. Notably, the fabrication strategies, absorption properties, and mechanisms of silica-based ceramics are described in detail, with a focus on structure and component design. Lastly, the prospects and ongoing challenges of this field in the future are presented. This review is expected to learn from the past and achieve progress toward the future of silica-based ceramic for EMW absorption.

Abstract:In this paper, several kinds of synthesis techniques were adopted; not only conventional solid-state reaction method but also solution synthesis techniques, including co-precipitation and hydrothermal synthesis, in addition to the gel-casting for complex shape of ceramic components and tape-casting of large scale thin plate for microwave IC. Different kinds of microwave ceramics were prepared, such as materials with low permittivity and high quality factor, moderate permittivity and good quality factor, and, high permittivity and reasonable quality factor, in addition to near zero of temperature coefficient of resonance frequency. Series of microwave devices were developed, for examples, dielectric resonators, dielectric filters, GPS antennas, communication connectors, and thin substrates for microwave IC.

Abstract:Application of microwave energy for materials processing is emerging as an innovative technology with many advantages over the conventional processing, and the rapid progress in this field suggests that microwave material processing (e.g., microwave and microwave-hydrothermal process) will play an outstanding role in the broad field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This review article gives an up-to-date overview of the current microscopical and physical characterization of the products synthesized by microwave and microwave-hydrothermal process, particularly for oxide nanomaterials because they are indispensable for nanotechnological innovations due to their combinations of infinite variety of structural motifs and properties with manifold morphological features. Basic principles, advantages, and limitations of microwave and microwave-hydrothermal processes are first introduced, and then their recent applications in the synthesis of different classes of functional materials especially for oxide nanomaterials are critically reviewed. Next, the recent progress on the structural and physical characterizations is summarized and discussed. Finally, prospects for future researches within this field are elaborated.

Abstract:This review describes the emerging research area and relevant physics of polymer-based composites enabled by amorphous ferromagnetic microwires. Fruitful results ranging from their tunable magnetic field and mechanical stress properties and influences of direct current on their microwave behavior are displayed in addition to the brief analysis on the underlying physics. The multifunctionalities exhibited strongly imply a variety of potential applications such as structural health monitoring and high-performance sensors. Abstract:Two-dimensional materials refer to materials in which electrons can only move freely on the nanometer scale in two dimensions and have more diverse structures and diverse properties than solid-phase materials. In the past decade, two-dimensional materials have attracted considerable attention due to their most excellent physical properties, such as graphene, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and MXenes. Meanwhile, due to their special structures, excellent electrical conductivity, rich surface and good mechanical strength, two-dimensional materials have unique electromagnetic properties and have potential applications in electromagnetic wave absorption, shielding and radar stealth. In this review, the progress in two-dimensional microwave absorption materials is reviewed objectively, including graphene, MoS2 and MXenes, as well as their composites, focusing on the achievements of the past few years and the current challenges. In addition, the performances of two-dimensional microwave absorption materials in different frequency ranges and the application in electronic communication and radar stealth will also discussed.

Microwave Interaction with Ceramics and Its Application to Spinodal Decomposition

Abstract:Microwave energy has been used for heating and processing of food and some soft materials for decades. Microwaves have recently been used for heating high-melting point materials such as ceramic and inorganic materials. This paper reviews the main factors that affect microwave heating of ceramic materials and reports some experimental results of microwave processing as applied to the solid solution of high-molten metal carbides. Titanium and zirconium carbide are widely used as reinforcements for ceramic and cermet materials due to their high hardness and high-melting points. Their hardness is greatly affected by the composition and their solid solutions have higher hardness than pure elemental crystals. However, synthesis of their solid solution is difficult. A new convenient routs to synthesize the (Ti,Zr)C carbides solution uses fine co-precipitated ZrTiO{sub 4} powder as a raw material. By heating it with carbon black over 1800{degrees}C, the near pure solid solution powder of (Ti,Zr)C is obtained. This solid solution powder is metastable and is easily decomposed into two phases of TiC and ZrC by annealing it at 1000-1400{degrees}C. The separated phases form unique microstructures. Microwave processing caused the phase separation more perfectly closing the two elemental components of TiC and ZrC than conventional annealing. Themore » relationships of the separated two phases were different by different heating facilities. The microstructure of the material by conventional annealing showed network like pattern and another one by microwave processing showed striated or modulated pattern. These Spinodal decomposition phenomena and their unique structures are expected to be new routs to design stronger grain boundary of ceramic materials and prepare the nano-materials.« less

Abstract:The advancement of science and technology requires simple, easy-to-control, cheap, fast, and eco-friendly technologies for material synthesis, modification, and processing. Microwave technology provides an alternative due to its well-known characteristics such as selective heating, fast heating, reproducibility, flexible controls (via time, power, and frequency), high energy efficiency, and easy temperature control. In microwave-based material processing, a direct molecular interaction between electromagnetic energy and the material takes place and causes complex volumetric heating which is one of the technical challenges in material science development. This makes microwave energy one of the most important future resources for material processing. In this review, the importance and the uses of microwave technology primarily for material synthesis and modification that are abreast of recent advances will be summarized.

Abstract:Microwave processing of ceramic materials--especially the sintering of Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}, ZrO{sub 2} and their composites--has been investigated during the past decade by many researchers. Electromagnetic waves interact with ceramic materials, leading to volumetric heating by dielectric loss. This enhances the sintering process and decreases sintering active energy and densification temperature. Microwave heating also has the potential for energy and cost savings when compared with conventional heating. Zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) has received attention for its rapid densification in a microwave furnace. This article examines the batch microwave sintering of ZTA--30 wt% ceria-yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Ce-Y-TZP) + 70 wt% Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}--including: (1) the microwave process in a multimode cavity with a hybrid heating structure; (2) the flexural strength, fracture toughness and wear resistance of the microwave-sintered materials; (3) the relationship between sintering temperature and microstructure/mechanical properties of the sintered samples; and (4) the comparison between microwave-sintered and conventionally sintered materials.

Abstract:Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 (BZN) microwave dielectric ceramics have attracted great attention due to their high-quality factor (Q), near-zero temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (τf), and suitable dielectric constant (εr), making them promising materials for application in microwave devices. Due to their superior dielectric properties, composite perovskite ceramics are widely used in the field of microwave communication, base stations, navigation, radar, etc. This article summarized the latest research progress of BZN ceramics and discusses the main preparation methods and performance modifications. Furthermore, the problems faced by BZN ceramics and solutions to improve their performance, as well as their potential applications, are analyzed. This article provides a reference for the design and preparation of BZN ceramics.

Abstract:Abstract Microwave (MW) dielectric ceramics are used in numerous electronic components for modern wireless communication systems, including antennas, resonators, capacitors and filters. However, to date, MW ceramics are manufactured by an energy-intensive, conventional high-temperature (> 1000 °C) sintering technology and thus cannot be co-sintered with low melting point and base electrodes (Ag, Al, etc., < 1000 °C), nor directly integrated with polymers (< 200 °C). Cold sintering is able to densify ceramics at < 200 °C via a combination of external pressure and a transient liquid phase, reducing the energy consumed and facilitating greater integration with dissimilar materials. This review outlines the basics of MW ceramics alongside the mechanism of cold sintering. Recent developments in cold sintering of MW ceramics, composites and devices are described, emphasizing new materials and progress towards component/device fabrication. Future prospects and critical issues for advancing cold-sintered MW materials and devices, such as unclear mechanism, low Q × f values and poor mechanical properties, are discussed. Graphic abstract

Abstract:Microwave sintering behaviors of three kinds of ceramics with different dielectric loss [Al2O3, Ce–Y–ZrO2 and lead-based relaxor ferroelectrics (PMZNT)] in 2·45GHz microwave furnace were described. Measurement of sample densities showed an enhancement of the sintering processing for all materials studied. For PMZNT and Ce–Y–ZrO2 with high dipolar loss or ionic conductive loss, the associated microstructure examined using scanning electron microscopy showed that microwave-sintered compacts produced much finer grain sizes at near theoretical density compared to conventional sintering. Resulting material properties, such as flexure strength and breakdown strength, were also increased due to developed microstructure in microwave processing. However, a comparable grain size and properties were observed for high pure Al2O3 with low dielectric loss in microwave and conventional methods. ©

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) materials can be directly carbonized or combined with other materials to obtain porous carbons or composites loaded with metal/metal oxide and doped with non-metals such as N, P, and B. The addition of dielectric metal oxide, magnetic metal particle and non-metallic element can enrich the loss mechanisms and bring abundant heterogeneous interfaces in the composite system, which can enhance the interfacial polarization and relaxation at the interface and increase the scattering of electromagnetic waves. Carbon materials derived from MOFs show excellent properties of high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, high conductivity and stability, and their applications in microwave absorption have become a rapidly expanding research field. Herein, the mechanism and classification of microwave absorption materials are briefly discussed and the advantages of MOFs and carbon-based materials in microwave absorption field are considered. The recent achievements of MOFs derived carbon-based microwave absorption composites are summarized in detail, and the effects of different components and special microstructures are also analyzed. Abstract:It is particularly important to develop high-performance microwave absorption (MA) materials to remediate the increasingly serious electromagnetic pollution. Recently, titanium dioxide-based (TiO2-based) composites have become a research hotspot owing to their light weight and synergy loss mechanism. In this study, significant research progress in TiO2-based complex-phase microwave absorption materials is reviewed, which involves carbon components, magnetic materials, polymers and so on. First, the research background and limitations of TiO2-based composites are discussed. The design principles for microwave absorption materials are elaborated in the next section. More importantly, TiO2-based complex-phase materials with multi-loss mechanisms are analyzed and summarized in this review. Finally, the conclusions and prospectives are presented, which provide a reference for the understanding of TiO2-based MA materials.

Abstract:Abstract Nowadays, microwave dielectric ceramics are widely used in all kinds of modern communication equipment, becoming the key material for manufacturing microwave dielectric filters and resonators. With the rapid development of related fields, the scope of application of microwave dielectric ceramics has been further expanded. On this basis, this paper explores the development history of microwave dielectric ceramics and the situation and future outlook of its industry. By combining historical events and data, the development history of microwave dielectric ceramics is described. The situation is also analysed and discussed in the context of the times and current events to provide an objective evaluation and forecast of the industry. The final results show that in the context of the new era of 5G, the microwave dielectric ceramics industry has entered a brand new stage of development and it presents a huge potential for innovation and development.
