Abstract:The polarization selective beam splitter system used for a LCLV (liquid crystal light valve) full color image large screen display is a key subject. The function of such system involves both polarizing radiation and separating light beam into three primary colors. The properties of this system have great influence on the brightness, contrast and color distortion of the display system. The polarization selective beam splitter system consists of four polarizers or non-polarizer and three trimming filters. Whole system is immersed in an oil tank. Such a system has good performance, especially high extinction coefficient.

Abstract:The color-separation multilayer systems operating in s-polarization or p-polarization components for thin film transistor liquid crystal display projectors were described. To reduce the trans-mission band ripples of the dichroic filters, the design for using s-polarization component was emphasized. Some experimental details and measuring results were reported.

Abstract:The factors affecting the contrast performance of liquid crystal light volve (LCLV) projection system are quantitatively analyzed. A three dimensional mathematic model is built to trace the rays. The effects of wave plates and optical thin films are analyzed based on the theory of Jones matrix and vector optics. The theoretic calculation results of systems with or without wave plates are presented. From these data, it is concluded that wave plates with proper phase changes can greatly improve system contrast.

Abstract:The design of a visible broadband and wide-angle metal-dielectric non-polarization Beamsplitter deposited on substrate of K9 glass is briefly presented. The spectral wavelength region of the design is from 420 to 680nm, and the incident angle of ±8°in air. The average deviation of transmittance and reflectance is about 2.5%. The average deviation of p-polarization and s-polarization is about 1%.

Abstract:A thin film polarization-selective beamsplitter system used for a liquid-crystal light-valve image projector has been presented. The system involves three beamsplitters which serve as either a polarizer/analyzer or a separator/synthesizer for the three primary colours. These filters have been realized with multilayer optical coatings. The design, manufacture and performance measurement of the filters have been described.

Abstract:In reflective liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) or LCOS light valve large screen projection display system, Philips color separation and color recombination prism system is widely used to make the projection system compact. There are two factors which influence the contrast of projection optical systems. One is the extinction ratio of Polarizing beam splitter (PBS) and the other is the dark-state output of Philips prism system because of geometrical polarization rotations. Optical thin films exhibit inevitable polarization effects at oblique incidence. Here, Geometrical polarization rotation is analyzed in detail. The factors affecting the contrast performance of Philips prism system are quantitatively analyzed. Polarization aberration in this display system is analyzed based on the theory of Jones polarization ray tracing. It can be conclude that the contrast of projection display system is intimately correlated with phase shift difference of the two polarization component. It is concluded that optical design should combine lens design and coating design to improve the contrast and image quality of the projection display system.

Abstract:In order to improve the energy efficiency and image contrast of liquid crystal display(LCD) projector,a wide-angle and broadband optical thin-film polarizing beam splitter(PBS) was designed.Several thin-film materials was adopted to achieve multi-kinds of Brewster's angles.The number and thickness of the films were optimized to obtain the wide-angle and broadband PBS.Using SF57 and SF2 glasses as prism materials,and TiO 2,Ta 2O 5,Al 2O 3,SiO 2 as film materials,four typical PBS multi-layer designs were given based on the above principle and the automatic Needle design method.The layer number of the optimized thin-film is 50～60,and the incident angle in air for the PBS reaches ±10.5°.The measured results showed that the integrated transmittance of P-polarization was 88.0% and 93.4% respectively at wavelength of 420—460 nm and 460—680 nm as well as that of S-polarization was 0.095% at wavelength of 420—680 nm.The PBS can be applied to F/2.8 optical systems to improve their performance obviously.

Abstract:Based on the 2D-PC wave multilayer film structure, a method to broaden the bandwidth of polarization beam splitter is proposed, which is composed of two different thickness periodic film stacks. Combined with the evaluation function of polarization splitting characteristic, the particle swarm optimization method is employed to design the optimal structural parameters. A broadband and compact polarization beam splitter is acquired, in which the center wavelength is 565 nm and its working range has achieved 220 nm with the average extinction ratio over 30 dB. In addition, by using the finite difference time domain method, the band structure and transmission spectrum of the wave-structure multilayer film are calculated, the angle sensitivity of the structure is investigated in detail. And we also study the electromagnetic field in the wavy-structure. Simulation results prove that the structure composed of the two different thickness periodic film stacks can avoid the discontinuity of bandgap, and PSO method can accelerate the convergence of the optimization algorithm and extend the bandwidth effectively.

Abstract:The poor extinction ratio and polarization cross talk of a general polarizing beam splitter (PBS) promote us to propose a high-precision polarizing beam splitting system,which consists of a PBS and polarizers.The additional polarizers are insert into reflection channel and transmission channel of the PBS,and the transmission axis direction of polarizer is adjusted,which can minimize the polarization cross talk.Both the theoretical calculation and numerical simulation demonstrate that this polarizing beam splitting system can achieve polarization splitting with higher accuracy.The experimental results show that when the intensity ratio of incident light is-47.5 dB,the polarizing beam splitting error caused by a general PBS is 57.3％,while it is 14.3％ after adding polarizer.When the intensity ratio of incident light is 47.8 dB,the polarizing beam splitting error caused by a general PBS is 15.5％,while it is 8.6 ％ after adding polarizer.The proposed polarizing beam splitter system is simple and practical,which can be employed in many polarized optical systems.

Abstract:A switchable polarization beam splitter utilizing GST-on-silicon waveguides is introduced and comprehensively investigated in this paper. Based on the phase matching and mode hybridization, structural parameters of the presented device are optimized by using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method, so that the output fundamental transverse-electric (TE0) and transverse-magnetic (TM0) modes can be switched by controlling the phase state of GST and the device exhibits broad bandwidth, low crosstalk, and high polarization extinction ratio. For the designed device with the amorphous GST, the crosstalk is lower than -23.40 dB and the polarization extinction ratio is larger than 21.35 dB over the C-band. In the case of the crystalline GST, within the C-band, the crosstalk of less than -27.37 dB and the polarization extinction ratio of greater than 21.37 dB are achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.

Abstract:We propose a novel broadband polarizing beam splitter with a compact sandwich structure that has a subwavelength grating in the quasi-static domain as the filling. The design is based on effective-medium theory an anisotropic thin-film theory, and the performance is investigated with rigorous coupled-wave theory. The design results show that the structure can provide a high polarization extinction ratio in a broad spectral range.

Abstract:The beam splitter is one of the basic optical components. Traditional beam splitters use bulky cubes or plates to realize beam splitting and thereby can hardly be used in a compact optical system. Recently, the beam splitter based on phase gradient metasurfaces has been proposed to split beam with a compact size. However, it is facing challenges on the efficiency and manufacturability. Herein, a beam splitter based on single-sized flat dielectric metagrating for arbitrary polarizations is proposed. The diffraction efficiency of the fabricated beam splitter reaches as high as 80% for both TM and TE polarizations at peak wavelength. Moreover, it has a broad working wavelength range (455-550 nm) at visible wavelength where the diffraction efficiency is much higher than 60%. Apart from the broadband and high diffraction efficiency, the steering angle can be simply adjusted by varying the periodicity. Splitting light with a flat metagrating enriches the field of flat photonics, opening up new possibilities in applications such as augment reality displays, imaging systems, compact spectrometers, and lidars.

Abstract:An asymmetrical SiNx-based polarization beam splitter at 810 nm are proposed and fabricated in this work. The simulation results show that the extinction ratio of > 20 dB and the insertion loss of < 0.6 dB can be achieved for both transverse-electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations at 810 nm.

Abstract:We propose a novel broad-angle polarization beam splitter utilizing the spatial dispersion of a special multi-layered dielectric periodic structure. The equal-frequency contours of this structure are flat lines for TE polarization but curved lines for TM polarization at a designed frequency. This special multi-layered structure has a fixed optical thickness for TE polarization for all incident angles. A polarization beam splitter working over a broad range of angle (from 0 degrees to 70 degrees) is achieved by stacking two such multi-layered structures of finite length (in the normal direction) with a half-period shift in the transverse direction. Abstract:A novel polarization beam splitter based on an anti-symmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. Anti-symmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations are designed for strong coupling between the fundamental (TE0) and the first-order transverse electric modes (TE1), while not for transfer magnetic modes. An adiabatic coupler is cascaded at the input-port, so as to drop the TE1 reflection. The Bragg grating has a compact length of ∼20 μm (55 periods). The polarization isolations of the through- and drop-ports at the wavelength of 1557 nm are 34 and 31 dB, respectively. A broad bandwidth of 64 nm and a large fabrication tolerance of 80 nm for polarization isolation over 20 dB are also achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate a polarization-dependent binocular waveguide display for augmented reality. Two polarization volume lenses (PVLs) are used to collimate and couple the light emitted from a single display panel into the waveguide, and two polarization volume gratings (PVGs) are used to couple the light out to the human eyes. With the proposed design, different high-quality images can be independently produced in the two eyes.

Abstract:We propose and simulate a new kind of compact polarizing beam splitter (PBS) based on a photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR) with complete photonic bandgaps. The two polarized states are separated far enough by resonant and nonresonant coupling between the waveguide modes and the microring modes. Some defect holes are utilized to control the beam propagation. The simulated results obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method show that high transmission (over 95%) is obtained and the polarization separation is realized with a length as short as 3.1 microm. The design of the proposed PBS can be flexible, thanks to the advantages of PCRRs.
