Abstract:The generation of 489 nm blue light by direct frequency doubling a CW 978 nm InGaAs diode laser radiation was demonstrated in optical superlattice LiNbO/sub 3/ crystals at room temperature. When the incident power was 150, 1.35 mW and 1.0 mW blue lights were achieved in the samples with and without an enhancement cavity, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate the efficient generation of red light at 671 nm and blue light at 447nm from a diode-pumped Q-switched 1342nm Nd:YVO4 laser together with a periodically poled LiTaO3 (PPLT) crystal. The sample used in this experiment is a dual-structure PPLT crystal with the period of 14.9 mum for the second harmonic generation and that of 4.9 mum for the third harmonic generation. The red and blue light, with the respective average power of 752 mW and 153 mW were obtained in a single path under an average fundamental power of 1.74 W, corresponding to the conversion efficiencies of 43.2% and 8.8%, respectively. These results indicate that the dual-structure PPLT can be used to construct a compact and efficient all-solid-state red-and-blue dual-wavelength laser.

Abstract:The continuous-wave and acousto-optical Q-switched pulse laser properties of diode-pumped Nd:YAG crystal operating at 946nm formed with a simple plane–plane cavity have been studied. Extra-cavity single-pass quasi-phase matching (QPM) frequency doubling with periodically poled LiTaO3 (PPLT) as the nonlinear crystal yielded a maximum output power of 66mW at 473nm with an overall optical to optical efficiency of 14.2% from 946 to 473nm. Our result proves that this scheme is of practical value for the construction of a blue all-solid-state laser.

Abstract:High-power cw green laser radiation is generated by intra-cavity frequency doubling of a diode-pumped Nd:GdVO4 laser with a MgO-doped periodically-poled LiNbO3 (MgO:PPLN) crystal at room temperature. An average power of 2.4 W at 0.53 μm is obtained under the pump 15 W at 808 nm, corresponding to an overall optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 16%. The M2 factor of the green beam is 3.90 and 1.34 for the horizontal and vertical direction, respectively. In addition, the power fluctuation is measured to be about ±5%.

Abstract:We report efficient, diode-pumped, self-frequency doubling (SFD) in the newly developed laser crystal Nd3+:Na3La9O3(BO3)8 (Nd:NLBO). More than 730 mW of fundamental output power at 1072 nm was achieved with a slope efficiency of 16.2%. With incident pump power of 8 W, 29 mW of green cw laser emission at 536 nm was observed with proper phase matching. This initial performance and the good optical properties of the crystalline host are encouraging for the development of a high power diode-pumped SFD visible light laser source.

Abstract:We report on an efficient blue light generation in periodically poled LiTaO3 by the frequency tripling of a quasi-continuous 1342 nm Nd:YVO4 laser. The period of the sample was 14.778 µm. Blue light with an average power of 138 mW was generated from a 18 mm long crystal in a single-pass process under an average fundamental power of 713 mW. The internal conversion efficiency was 19.3%.

Abstract:Abstract An efficient green generation in a periodically poled LiTaO3 by frequency doubling a diode-pumped, single-mode cw ND:YAG laser is reported. A 44-mw, 532-nm output was obtained by single-pass operation in a 7.8-μm period, 15-mm long sample using a 3.5-W incidence power near room temperature. No obvious photo-refractive damage was observed in the operation temperature and power level.

Abstract:Blue light was generated in a LiNbO/sub 3/ channel waveguide by frequency doubling radiation from a laser diode in a guided to guided wave interaction, utilizing first-order quasi-phase-matching in a periodically domain inverted structure. A fabrication method that does not depend on the use of titanium was used. A periodic pattern of silicon oxide on the positive c-face of LiNbO/sub 3/ was used in combination with a heat treatment to achieve a periodic outdiffusion and domain reversal in the surface layer. Abstract:. We report an efficient generation of red light in a periodically-poled LiTaO 3 (PPLT) crystal by extracavity single-pass frequency doubling of a diode-pumped, Q-switched Nd:YVO 4 laser at 1342 nm. The sample used in the experiment is 20 mm in length and 14.77 μm in period. An average power of 840 mW of the 671 nm red light is obtained with a 808 nm pump of 12.3 W, the overall optical-to-optical efficiency being 6.8%. The measured effective nonlinear coefficient of the sample is ∼3.8 pm/V. The high conversion efficiency and output power demonstrate that the periodically-poled crystal serving as a frequency conversion device may be used in practice to construct an all-solid-state red laser based on an extracavity single-pass quasi-continuous scheme.

Abstract:First-order quasiphase matched green light generation in a periodic LiTaO3 superlattice crystal was performed by direct frequency doubling of a quasi-continuous solid-state laser pumped by a diode. A 7.8-μm period, 14-mm long sample, fabricated by field poling, was used. A 38-mW, 532-nm green light output was obtained from the sample with an incidence power of 256 mW near room temperature, which corresponds to 15% single-pass conversion efficiency. No obvious photo-refractive damage was observed in the operation temperature and power level. The measured effective nonlinear coefficient is 7 pm/V. The measured temperature band width of 3°C corresponds to the theoretical value.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a compact, all-solid-state 532 nm semi-Gaussian laser beam (SGB) source based on a 1064 nm laser and a transversely varying periodically-poled LiTaO3 (TPPLT) crystal as the laser beam shaper as well as the nonlinear frequency converter. We have used the designed TPPLT crystal to obtain a neat 532nm SGB with the quality of QSGB=1:17.5 by a single-pass second harmonic generation. The dependence of the generated SGB quality on the designed TPPLT parameter and the potential applications of the neat SGB are also discussed.

Abstract:Blue lasers with high power and high beam quality have many applications such as laser display, underwater communication and imaging, and non-ferrous metal processing. Optically pumped external-cavity surface-emitting laser combines the advantages of both surface-emitting semiconductor lasers and solid-state disk lasers, and can produce high output power and good beam quality simultaneously. Its high intracavity circulating power is more conducive to intracavity frequency doubling, achieving high-power and high beam quality blue light through fundamental laser in the near-infrared waveband. This paper reports an efficient intracavity frequency doubled 490 nm high power blue light using a 980 nm fundamental laser in an external-cavity surface-emitting laser. The V-type resonant cavity is formed by the high reflectivity distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) at the bottom of gain chip, a folded flat concave mirror (high reflectivity coated for 980 nm and anti-reflectivity coated for 490 nm), and a flat concave end mirror (high reflectivity coated for 980 nm and 490 nm). By inserting a nonlinear crystal LBO into the cavity at the beam waist formed by the folded mirror and end mirror, and employing a birefringent filter (BRF) to polarize the fundamental laser and narrow the linewidth of the laser, high power and high beam quality blue laser with high conversion efficiency is obtained. The effects of different factors including the length of nonlinear crystals, the linewidth of fundamental laser, and the compensation of walk off angle on the output power of the blue laser are experimentally studied. The length of the nonlinear crystal is optimized based on the size of the fundamental laser beam waist at the position of the crystal in the resonant cavity. Under the type I phase matching condition of LBO, over 6 W output power at 491 nm wavelength is obtained when the crystal length is 5 mm and the BRF thickness is 1mm. The beam quality M2 factors in both x and y directions are 1.08, and the conversion efficiency of frequency doubling is 63%. The experimental results also show that using symmetrically placed nonlinear crystals to compensate for the walk-off angle during frequency doubling can clearly improve the conversion efficiency of the frequency doubled blue laser.

Abstract:We present what is to our knowledge a new approach to generating tunable blue light by cascaded nonlinear frequency conversion in a single LiTaO3 crystal. Simultaneous quasi-phase matching of an optical parametric generation process and a sum-frequency mixing process is achieved by means of structuring the crystal with a quasi-periodic optical superlattice. The spectral (wavelength tuning and bandwidth) and power characteristics of the blue-light generation are studied with a fixed-wavelength 532-nm picosecond laser and a wavelength-tunable nanosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO) as the pump sources. By tuning the OPO wavelength, we could tune the blue output over approximately 20 nm. Temperature tuning of the blue output at a fixed pump wavelength of 532 nm was limited to approximately 1.5 nm. A maximum blue power of 15 microW was generated at a pump power of 0.5 mW, corresponding to an efficiency of 3%.

Abstract:A microchip cavity including a half-monolithic Nd:YAG-KNbO3 chip and a second KNbO3 crystal is presented. An output power of up to 30 mW at 473 nm pumped by a single stripe 1-W at 808-nm diode is achieved. The laser can be operated in either single-longitudinal or multilongitudinal mode by rotation of the second frequency-doubling crystal to 0 degrees or 90 degrees from the first one. Abstract:Passively Q-switched green output with Cr 4+ :YAG as saturable absorber and PPMgLN as the frequency doubling crystal was realized in a compact diode end-pumped Nd:YVO 4 laser. The green light output power, pulse width, pulse repetition rate, pulse energy and peak power with three Cr 4+ :YAG of different initial transmissions were investigated. The maximum average output power was 1.2 W at the pump power of 4.0 W and the maximum conversion efficiency was 30% with the Cr 4+ :YAG of 90% initial transmission. The maximum pulse energy and minimum pulse width were 10.9 μJ and 12 ns with the Cr 4+ :YAG of 75% initial transmission.

Abstract:We report in this work a continuous wave (CW) narrowband 589 nm light generation for the purpose of laser guide assisted adaptive optics. A 39 mm long 1 mm thick periodically poled near stoichiometric LiTaO 3 crystal with duty cycle near 50% was fabricated using electrical poling at room temperature and pumped by a Raman fiber amplifier. We tested two temperature control ovens, and a maximum conversion efficiency of about 14.3%, corresponding to 4 W of yellow light with 28 W of fundamental power, and bandwidth less than 0.18 GHz was achieved.
