Abstract:The geometrical optical phenomena are analyzed based on the hydrodynamical model of optics (HMO) and some examples are given. It is shown that the HMO can be applied to study the purely geometrical optics problems concerning with focusing, defocusing, propagation etc. by employing the geometrical parameters such as curvature and the physical quantities determined by the geometrical properties such as f, meanwhile the geodesic equation is demonstrated to perform as the eikonal equation to study the orbital information of light.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations can produce many exotic optical phenomena and are the basis of many novel applications of modern optics, including optical communications systems, optical sensing, and materials research. In recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allows unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. With the spectacular experimental development of nonlinear optics, computational methods and techniques for nonlinear optics have obtained prominent progress. This chapter summarizes the computational methods of free-carrier nonlinearities via the hydrodynamic description in a nonperturbative regime and bound-state electron nonlinearities via the Maxwell-Bloch description in a simplified two-level quantum system. The full-wave consideration of nonlinear dynamics of plasmonics and bound-state electrons reveals key contributions to the emerging nonlinear optical applications and allows the design of high effective nonlinearities in a desired spectral range.

Abstract:Applications of metallic metamaterials have generated significant interest in recent years. Electromagnetic behavior of metamaterials in the optical range is usually characterized by a locallinear response. In this article, we develop a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) solution of the hydrodynamic model that describes a free electron gas in metals. Extending beyond the locallinear response, the hydrodynamic model enables numerical investigation of nonlocal and nonlinear interactions between electromagnetic waves and metallic metamaterials. By explicitly imposing the current continuity constraint, the proposed model is solved in a self-consistent manner. Charge, energy and angular momentum conservation laws of high-order harmonic generation have been demonstrated for the first time by the Maxwell-hydrodynamic FDTD model. The model yields nonlinear optical responses for complex metallic metamaterials irradiated by a variety of waveforms. Consequently, the multiphysics model opens up unique opportunities for characterizing and designing nonlinear nanodevices.

Abstract:A numerical scheme is presented to solve the nonlinear Helmholtz (NLH) equation modeling second-harmonic generation (SHG) in photonic bandgap material doped with a nonlinear χ((2)) effect and the NLH equation modeling wave propagation in Kerr type gratings with a nonlinear χ((3)) effect in the one-dimensional case. Both of these nonlinear phenomena arise as a result of the combination of high electromagnetic mode density and nonlinear reaction from the medium. When the mode intensity of the incident wave is significantly strong, which makes the nonlinear effect non-negligible, numerical methods based on the linearization of the essentially nonlinear problem will become inadequate. In this work, a robust, stable numerical scheme is designed to simulate the NLH equations with strong nonlinearity.

Abstract:In high power laser systems, nonlinear effect, one of the key factors of beam wavefront aberration and even irreversible damage to system, has always been one of the top considerations of researchers for decades. A hybrid ray-tracing method for both linear media and nonlinear media based on geometric optics is presented in this paper and realized by programming. In a simple optic system with KDP crystal, an obvious decline of beam quality is observed in high laser power density conditions and a method taking component intervals as compensation of beam quality is proved feasible. Considering the complexity of traditional modeling method based on surfaces, a modeling method based on components is established. Hopefully, the conclusions and flaws of this paper can shed light on relevant work and further research.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the mathematical modeling of second harmonic generation of nonlinear optics in periodic structures. The governing equation is a system of nonlinear Maxwell's equations. The well-posedness of the model is studied. Preliminary results on L-p regularity of solutions for the model problems are presented. The results are expected to be useful in our current effort of solving the underlying optimal design problem. Some future directions are also highlighted.

Abstract:The diffraction of time-harmonic waves in a nonlinear medium with periodic structure is studied in this paper. In particular second harmonic generation – an important phenomenon in nonlinear optics-is modelled. The model, derived from a general nonlinear system of Maxwell's equations, is shown to have a unique solution for all but a discrete number of frequencies. The problem is solved numerically by combining a method of finite elements and a fixed-point iteration scheme. Numerical experiments for some simple grating structures are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Consider a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave incident on a periodic surface. The optical medium may be linear, chiral, or nonlinear. The diffraction problem is to predict energy distributions of the propagating waves away from the structure. The process is governed by time-harmonic Maxwell’s equations. In this paper, direct, inverse, and optimal design problems in the mathematical modeling of diffractive optics are studied. Results on mathematical and computational aspects of the model problems are presented.

Abstract:We employed both theoretical calculations and experiments to study the nonlinear responses in optical metamaterials. The spectra of second-harmonic generations measured on a fishnet metamaterial are in quantitative agreements with calculations based on full-wave numerical simulations combined with field integrations, both exhibiting ~80 times enhancements at the magnetic resonance frequency. Our calculations explained several interesting features observed experimentally, and suggested an optimal metamaterial structure to yield the strongest nonlinear signals.

Abstract:The propagation of ultrashort laser pulses in water has been investigated with the extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation and the electron density equation. With the model that incorporates the diffraction, normal group-velocity dispersion, multiphoton absorption, self-focusing and defocus of light by the generated free electrons, we examined numerically the spatio-temporal development of the on-axis light intensity along the propagation and the laser-induced electron plasma. Simulation of the underlying dynamics of the ultrashort laser propagation in water reveals that the self-focusing interplays competitively with the laser-induced optical breakdown. Moreover, the laser energy, its duration and focusing geometry determine in combination the structure of plasma filament and the reshaping of energy fluence. The results may provide a better understanding and application of the ultrashort laser pulses in medicine.

Abstract:In this paper, the existence and regularity of solutions of a system of Maxwell equations in periodic structures are established. The diffraction (scattering) problem is reformulated in a bounded domain by introducing the transparent boundary conditions. An indirect approach is then used to carry out the regularity analysis. This problem arises in the modeling of the surface-enhanced second harmonic generation of nonlinear optics.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the integrable Hirota equation, which describes the propagation of ultrashort light pulses in optical fibers. First, we numerically study spectral signatures of the spatial Lax pair with distinct potentials [e.g., solitons, Akhmediev-Kuznetsov-Ma (AKM) and Kuznetsov-Ma (KM) breathers, and rogue waves (RWs)] of the Hirota equation. Second, we discuss the RW generation by using the dam-break problem with a decaying initial condition and further analyze spectral signatures of periodized wavetrains. Third, we explore two kinds of noise-derived modulational instabilities: (i) the one case is based on the initial condition (one plus a random noise) such that the KM and AKM breathers, and RWs can be generated, and they agree well with analytical solutions; (ii) another case is to consider another initial condition (one plus a Gaussian wave with a random noise phase) such that some RWs with higher amplitudes can be found. Moreover, we also investigate the spectral signatures of corresponding periodic wavetrains. Finally, we find that the interactions of two waves can also generate the RW phenomena with higher amplitudes. These obtained results will be useful to understand the RW generation in the third-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation and other related models.
A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for solving nonlocal optical response models

Abstract:We propose Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for solving the frequency-domain Maxwell's equations coupled to the Nonlocal Hydrodynamic Drude (NHD) and Generalized Nonlocal Optical Response (GNOR) models, which are employed to describe the optical properties of nano-plasmonic scatterers and waveguides. Brief derivations for both the NHD model and the GNOR model are presented. The formulations of the HDG method are given, in which we introduce two hybrid variables living only on the skeleton of the mesh. The local field solutions are expressed in terms of the hybrid variables in each element. Two conservativity conditions are globally enforced to make the problem solvable and to guarantee the continuity of the tangential component of the electric field and the normal component of the current density. Numerical results show that the proposed HDG methods converge at optimal rate. We benchmark our implementation and demonstrate that the HDG method has the potential to solve complex nanophotonic problems.

Abstract:The magneto-optical (MO) materials are essential for designing nonreciprocal devices, like isolators and circulators. Even though the study of MO effect has a long history, the recent works of fabricating nonreciprocal nanostructures, novel MO metamaterials, and topological photonics have garnered significant attention in both theoretical and experimental research of MO materials. In this work, we consider the planar MO waveguide mode. By setting the general form of the fields and utilizing the boundary conditions, the analytical solution of MO modes is obtained. We have shown the potential of such effective solution in analyzing the dispersions and transport behaviors of MO modes in the waveguide. Crossings and avoided crossings of modes will happen, which may due to the strong coupling of TE and TM modes in the waveguide. Faraday rotation can be observed during the propagation of MO modes and the energy flow will precess in the waveguide. These results can be applied in predicting the evolution of the modes in MO waveguides, which has potential in designing MO nonreciprocal devices.

Abstract:Nonlinear wave equations are central to the study of nonlinear optics and fluid dynamics. Notably, recent research has shown that solitons can be generated in mode-locked lasers. An interesting application of these lasers is the development of optical clocks which have the potential to be considerably more accurate than atomic clocks. Another important area of research in nonlinear optics is lattice dynamics where localized solitary wave or solitons can be obtained in periodic and irregular lattice systems. In honeycomb lattices, discrete and continuous nonlinear Dirac systems can be derived in certain parameter regimes; the Dirac systems describe conical diffraction, a phenomena observed in recent experiments. In water and internal waves the classical equations are reformulated as a system of coupled equations where the free surface equations are formulated as nonlocal equation and the depth variable is eliminated. These systems reduce to interesting asymptotic equations in suitable limits. A numerical method, termed spectral renormalization, is used to find solitary waves in nonlinear optics, water waves and multi-fluid systems.

Abstract:We investigate here a new class of optical beams: modified hollow Gaussian beams (MHGBs) in strongly nonlocal nonlinear media (SNNM). A set of analytical expressions for the propagation properties is deduced and some numerical simulations are also carried out to illustrate the propagation properties. It is found that the evolution of the MHGBs in SNNM is periodical, which is the result of the competition between nonlinearity and diffraction. The second-order moment beam width of the MHGBs can keep invariant during propagation like a soliton when the input power equals the critical power, otherwise it varies periodically like a breather. However, the patterns of transverse intensity are always changing with the propagation distance increasing, which is different from solitons or breathers. It is also found that the evolution curve of on-axis intensity may manifest itself in a concave, a platform, or a Gaussian-like shape depending on the input power.

Abstract:This article presents a numerical method for modeling nonlinear water waves based on the High Order Spectral（HOS） method proposed by Dommermuth and Yue and West et al.,involving Taylor expansion of the Dirichlet problem and the Fast Fourier Transform（FFT） algorithm. The validation and efficiency of the numerical scheme is illustrated by a number of case studies on wave and wave train configuration including the evolution of fifth-order Stokes waves,wave dispersive focusing and the instability of Stokes wave with finite slope. The results agree well with those obtained by other studies.

Abstract:We present a numerical model to deal with optical nonlinear processes at a strong focusing situation where general methods possibly fail to work. We find a special curvilinear coordinate system through which a new paraxial wave equation set is developed and its eigenmode transmission solutions are derived. On the basis of the wave equations, a detailed algorithm for second-harmonic generation is proposed with the Fourier-space method. Numerical results in non-walk-off and walk-off cases show that the new model can handle wave interactions on the strong focusing L/b >> 1 condition within a relative small sampling grid, with which traditional methods will lose efficiency, and can provide unique features in comparison with the model in a Cartesian coordinate system. Concrete assessment of the new model is rendered by error analysis. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America

Abstract:<p>Recent progress in optical fibers is impressive, while nonlinear Schrödinger-type models are seen in fiber optics and other fields (such as ferromagnetism, plasma physics, Bose–Einstein condensation and oceanography). Hereby, our symbolic computation on a three-coupled variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger system is performed, for the picosecond-pulse attenuation/amplification in a multicomponent inhomogeneous optical fiber with diverse polarisations/frequencies. For the slowly-varying envelopes of optical modes, we obtain a similarity reduction, an auto-Bäcklund transformation and some analytic solutions, which rely on the optical-fiber variable coefficients, i.e., the fiber loss/gain, nonlinearity and group velocity dispersion. Variable-coefficient constraints on those solutions are presented. Our results might be of some use in the construction of logic gates, optical computing, soliton switching, design of fiber directional couplers, quantum information processing, soliton amplification in the wavelength division multiplexing systems, solitonic studies in the all-optical devices and birefringence fiber systems.</p>
