Abstract:The differences in annealing treatments affecting the superconductivity of the as-grown crystals with various superconducting transition temperature Tc are used to describe the relationship between oxygen nonstoichiometry and superconductivity in the compound. In this study, the annealing temperature was fixed at 500C to avoid evaporation of Bi atoms. Results indicate that for the as-grown Bi2Sr2CaCuO8+y crystals obtained from Bi-rich melts with lower Tc and more over-doped with oxygen, after annealing, the oxygen atoms would readily diffuse out even in oxidizing atmospheres. Oxygen intercalation into the crystals would take place under higher oxygen pressure. On the other hand, for the as-grown crystals with Tc around 85K, oxygen loss or intercalation into the crystals occurred when they are annealed in reducing or oxidizing atmosphere.
