The spectral quality and the Raman line intensities of the enhanced scattering of polystyrene deposited on silver foil, roughened with nitric acid, were related to the concentration. The band intensity versus concentration plot displays a turning point corresponding to the critical concentration for coil shrinkage. The observed phenomena are in accordance with Qian's proposal for the existence of a critical concentration for coil shrinkage, based on excimer fluorescence studies of polymer solutions.

Abstract:Silver and copper foils for surface enhanced Raman study were prepared by chemical etching method with HNO3. These foils exhibit better enhancement factor and higher thermal stability than the vacuum deposited silver island film. The surface geometry of poly (4-vinylpyridine) and polybenzimidazole has been determined by observing relative intensity change of the out-of-plane and in-plane ring vibration bands in their SERS spectra. The two polymers show two orientations in which the rings are lying down or standing up from the surface resulted from different sample methods.

Abstract:Polarized Raman scattering spectra and surface enhanced Raman scattering spectra have been recorded from a thin film of a stretched polystyrene and from an adsorbed thin layer of polystyrene on silver surface, respectively. Comparison of intensities of the Raman line near 786 cm(-1) indicates that the aromatic rings are perpendicular to the surface in polystyrene which deposited onto silver from a very dilute solution.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) by films of polystyrene adsorbed onto silver island films was investigated. Films that were only a few tens of angstroms in thickness degraded rapidly during laser irradiation to form graphite-like species at the silver surface. However, no degradation was observed while Raman spectra of the solid polymer were obtained, indicating that the graphitization was probably induced by laser heating of the substrate and catalyzed by silver. For thin films of polystyrene, the rate of graphitization was high and was proportional to laser power. However, the degradation reaction was inhibited for thick films or for thin films overcoated with thick films of a second polymer. The Raman spectra were similar for all films thicker than approximately a hundred angstroms, even those overcoated with a thick film of a second polymer having a large Raman scattering cross section, indicating that most of the observed scattering originated from polymer molecules within a few tens of angstroms of the silver surface. It was concluded that SERS can be used to probe the molecular structure of polymer/metal interfaces without interference by scattering from the bulk of the polymer.

Abstract:The concentration dependence of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of adsorbed benzyl disulfide and phenol disulfide on surfaces of silver and gold has been investigated. It has been found that the spectral qualities are inversely proportional to the concentration of the applied solutions. Excellent SERS spectral enhancement and perpendicular orientation could be achieved for the sample adsorbed from a 0.0001M solution rather than that from a 0.001M solution, This phenomenon was termed as the “dilution effect” on SERS spectra.

Abstract:To research surface-enhanced Raman scattering effect of different diameters’ polystyrene nanospheres (Ag-coated) substrates, we had prepared a new surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate. It was prepared by using spin-coating and self-assembled to form monolayer and hexagonal close-packed (HCP) order colloidal-crystal films with PS nanospheres of different diameters. Then, a 30 nm Ag film was deposited on the PS arrays with magnetron sputtering. We detected Raman scattered spectrum by means of Roman spectroscopy instrument with Rhodamine R6G as a probe molecule, and the conclusion was drawn that all the substrates of Ag-coated PS nanospheres displayed stronger Raman enhancement. With the increase of the diameter of the microspheres, the degree of fluctuation of polystyrene nanospheres array was continuously strengthened (increasing roughness), and the SERS signal was enhanced gradually. The signal peak reached a maximum when the ball diameter was 600 nm, and then we aquired an optimal SERS substrate. Simultaneously, we found that the SERS spectra of R6G of a high signal to noise ratio was obtained on the substrate, and associated with the benzene ring within a range of CC double bond stretching vibration characteristic spectrum and the inner surface and the outer surface deformation vibration characteristic spectra were significantly enhanced. The single and large-scale Raman scattering substrate presents especial nanostructure of high and low distribution. The depth and the gap between different PS microspheres show the obvious differences, which can significantly improve the surface morphology structure of Ag film and Raman scattering effect of PS nanospheres substrate. The substrate presenting special arrays’ structure has significantly great potential in exploring molecule of chemical and biological filed.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman scattering of pyridine adsorbed to weakly roughened silver films is studied using a well-characterized extended surface plasmon excitation. We show that the additional increase in the Raman signal associated with the extended surface plasmon is fully accounted for by the enhancement in the average macroscopic field.

Abstract:Adsorption and domain formation of dodecanethiol (DT)-bound silver nanoparticles (SNPs) at the cyclohexane/water interface were studied by means of total internal reflection (TIR) light scattering microscopy and TIR surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). By the TIR light scattering microscopy, the extent of the interfacial adsorption and domain formation of SNP was observed, which was produced by the reaction between citrate-reduced SNPs in the aqueous phase and DT in the cyclohexane phase. The Raman spectra of DT on SNP showed that the relative intensity ratios of gauche to trans conformers in the nu(C-S) band region decreased with the increase of the initial concentration of DT, suggesting the change from the liquidlike structure to the solidlike structure of the DT. The residue of the negative charges on the SNPs at the interface was detected by the resonance SERS (SERRS) peaks of the adsorbed cationic porphyrin, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)-21H,23H-porphine (TMPyP). The efficiency of the interfacial SNPs domains as a SERS substrate for TMPyP strongly depended on the adsorption state of the DT.

Abstract:Surface molecular orientation and relaxation of aromatic polyimide liquid crystalline containing pendent cyanobiphenyl mesogens in thin films were investigated by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using silver particles as overcoating layer which was chemically deposited from a solution. SERS measurements for samples of current interest, such as ultrathin polyimide film, were successfully performed without disturbing the surface morphology. The results of this work show that our SERS sampling technique is particularly effective for surface study on polymer films.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the tuning of the optical responses and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of the silver nanostructure film corrugated with a two-dimensional (2D) colloidal crystal. Using rhodamine 6G as the probe molecules, we show that the SERS signal can be efficiently improved by controlling the silver layer thickness or the microsphere size. Under the excitation of a laser with 514 nm in wavelength, the largest spatially average enhancement factor of SERS signal is on the order of ~3 × 107 when the silver nanostructure is patterned by sputtering ~100-nm-thick silver layer onto 2D colloidal microspheres of 360 nm in diameter. We further demonstrate that the Raman intensity is proportional to the product of the absorptances of the as-prepared metallic SERS substrates at excitation and Stokes wavelengths. Numerical simulations revealed that this huge enhancement of Raman signal is attributed to the excitation of a dipolar plasmon resonance of the silver nanostructure.

Abstract:Surface-macroporous polystyrene with sub-micrometer (250 similar to 400 nm) pores and a surface thickness of 10 put has been synthesized using a maleic anhydride-alt-vinyl acetate copolymer microspheres as template I followed by removal of the template with water, ethanol or acetone. The surface features of the samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) The SEM micrographs indicate that macroporous PS can be prepared in each case, with use of water as the template's solvent having the smallest adverse effect on the polymer. The functional groups present on the surface of pores after the template was dissolved are different in each case and have been identified by FTIR, dissolution of template in water gives rise to carboxyl groups, dissolution of template in ethanol gives rise to ester groups whilst dissolution of template in acetone gives acid anhydride groups. The rate of template dissolving is fastest in acetone and slowest in water.
Ir Study on Monomolecular Particle Agglomerates of Polystyrene Obtained by Freeze-Drying of Its Dilute Solution

Abstract:The monomolecular particle agglomerates of polystyrenes were obtained by freeze-drying of its very dilute solutions of 1.3 x 10(-5)-2.0 x 10(-5) g/mL in benzene:cylcohexane (100:1) solvents, and they were annealed at room temperature for hundred days before use. According to C-13-NMR measurement the polystyrenes should be practically atactic. The number average molecular weights of the samples are 2.80 x 10(3), 2.00 x 10(4), and 1.55 x 10(6), respectively. The freeze-dried aPS with a molecular weight higher than 10(4) show two new IR absorption bands at 1098 and 1261 cm(-1), which are absent in the normal aPS and freeze-dried styrene oligomer. It was also found that the low molecular weight samples can only form powders, whereas the freeze-dried aPS with higher molecular weight form a mixture of powders and fibrils, of which the longer fibrils show a much stronger 1261 cm(-1) band than the shorter fibrils and the powder. It seems that the 1261 cm(-1) band corresponds to the stacking behavior of monomolecular particles.

Abstract:A new method to study chemical adsorption kinetics by means of surface enhanced raman scattering is proposed. The theoretical model is proposed and experimental results given out. The adsorption of CV and PABA molecules on the surfaces of silver mirrors and silver colloids is studied. It is found that the adsorption of CV on silver surfaces is homogeneous, and the adsorption of PABA is heterogeneous. The differences of silver surfaces only influence the adsorption rate constant Ka, not changing the heterogeneity character of adsorption and desorp-tion rate constant (Kd=0). Finally, the significance of heterogeneity paramter is discussed.

Abstract:By assembling polystyrene microspheres on a sample surface, the surface Raman signal could be enhanced. The dependence of the enhancement effect on the size of microspheres was systematically investigated and it was found that microspheres with a diameter of 3.00 μm showed the highest enhancement of ca 5 folds. By utilizing the enhancement effect of the microspheres, the surface Raman intensity of malachite green isothiocyanate (MGITC) adsorbed on Au(111) surface could be enhanced by 20 folds, indicating that this method could effectively improve the detection sensitivity of surface Raman spectroscopy for the adsorbed species on single crystal surface. The later signal increment corresponds to the Raman enhancement effect of nearly 3 orders of magnitude. The enhancement effect is mainly owing to the formation of nanojets when a laser is focused on the microspheres of appropriate diameter. The formation of nanojets will lead to the highly localized electromagnetic field, which will then significantly enhance the Raman process in the nanojets. The main reason for obtaining different enhancements on two types of samples was analyzed.
