Abstract:This paper provides new insights for the study of polymer degradation through the detection of markers released at the polymer surface using Al-coated SERS active substrates. Combining a nanodestructive sampling procedure with the SERS sensitivity allows achieving detection limits much lower than traditional polymer characterization techniques, opening the way to the use of SERS as part of an innovative strategy to diagnose surface degradation in polymeric museum artefacts. The method was applied to artificially photo-aged model polymers and to museum artworks.

Abstract:Confocal Raman imaging can potentially identify and visualise microplastics and nanoplastics, but the imaging lateral resolution is hampered by the diffraction of the laser, making it difficult to analyse nanoplastics that are smaller than the laser spot and the lateral resolution limit (λ/2NA). Fortunately, once a nanoplastic is scanned to collect the spectrum via a position/pixel array as a spectrum matrix, akin to a hyperspectral matrix, the nanoplastic can be imaged by mapping the spectrum intensity as a pattern that is transcended axially and can be fitted as a 2D Gaussian surface. The Gaussian fitting and image re-construction by deconvolution can precisely predict the nanoplastic's position and approximate size, and potentially enhance the signal intensity. Several algorithms are also employed to decode the spectrum matrix, to improve the Raman images before the subsequent image re-construction. Overall, general confocal microscopy can also break through the diffraction limit of the excitation light by using algorithms, resulting in super-resolution Raman imaging to capture nanoplastics.

Abstract:Effects of improved beam quality of a low diffraction laser beam on laser material removal processes are experimentally investigated in a polymeric material. The experimental results are in agreement with theoretical predictions. The results show that the low diffraction beam has marked advantages over the Gaussian beam in ablation-dominated material removal processes in terms of larger depth and smaller taper at the same average power level.

Abstract:The non-polarized Raman laser light was used to investigate the anisotropic polymers including polypropylene fiber, nylon 6 flat fiber, and polyethylene pipe. The Raman spectra of the same samples with different location relative to the incident direction of laser beam show obvious differences. The present result extends the application of Raman spectrosoopy to the characterization of oriented polymers samples.

Abstract:The Raman spectra of polyacrylamide and its covalently crosslinked gel (with N,N′-methylenebis-acrylamide as the crosslinking agent) in the region of 200–3600 cm−1 are discussed. The vibrational band assignments for polyacrylamide are made on the basis of a comparison with the spectra of acrylamide, acrylic acid, polyacrylic acid, poly(vinyl alcohol), and other vinyl polymers. The Raman spectra of polyacrylamide in the solid phase and in aqueous solution have similar spectral features. The Raman spectra of gels with low crosslink content and of polyacrylamide in aqueous solution are comparable except that one new band, predominantly due to the residual monomer, appears in the gel phase. An analysis based on polarized Raman, infrared and NMR spectra, model building, and group theoretical calculations suggests a structure dominated by isotactic species.

Abstract:Physicochemical phenomena at the polymer-metal interface have been observed by the use of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). SERS spectra are compared with the infra-red reflection-absorption spectra for coatings of polymer on metals. Results show that SERS is an effective in situ analytical technique which is highly informative in that the authentic adsorption state and the microstructure of the first monolayer near the metal surface can be revealed with much less interference from the polymer bulk.

Abstract:It is well-known that a diblock copolymer may form a microphase separation in the bulk state due to the self-assembling of each block. Depending on the segment ratio of each block, the morphology could be spherical, cylindrical or lamellar.1 When dissolved in a selective solvent, which is a good solvent for one block, but poor for the other, diblock copolymers may form a core-shell micelle with the insoluble block as the core and the soluble block as the shell.2 If a solid substrate is in contact with this polymer solution, diblock copolymers may deposit on it to form a polymer brush when the solid/insoluble block interaction is favorable.3 Recently, Liu et al.4 prepared a novel type of nanofiber by photocrosslinking the PCEMA blocks in the self-assembled cylindrical phase of a polystyrene and polystyrene-b-poly(2-cinnamoylethyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PCEMA) diblock copolymer blend. The TEM graph showed that the nanofibers are ∼25 nm in diameter and ∼103 nm in length. In this study, a combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering (LLS) was used to determine the mass and composition of such novel nanofibers as well as their conformation in solution.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials composed of sp and sp(2) carbon atoms (e. g., graphyne and graphdiyne) show many interesting properties. These materials can be constructed through alkyne homocoupling; however, the occurrence of various side reactions increases the difficulty of their synthesis and structural characterization. Here, we investigate the thermodynamic properties and vibrational spectra of several arylalkynes. Both homocoupling and side reactions are found to occur spontaneously at room temperature in terms of thermodynamics. The calculated Raman spectra of the homocoupling products show regular changes with increasing polymerization degree. By rationalizing the vibrational modes of various oligomers, the Raman spectrum of a 2D sp-sp(2) carbon sheet is predicted; it exhibits three sharp peaks at 2241, 1560, and 1444 cm(-1). Although the target and byproducts display similar vibrational modes, a combination of Raman and infrared spectroscopies can be used to differentiate them. The theoretical results are then used to analyze the structure of a synthesized sample and provide useful information.

Abstract:The laser-induced chemical reactions on the surface of a polymer film were investigated by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using chemically deposited silver as the SERS activating layer on the surface of the film. The silver-catalyzed pyrolysis at the outermost surface of the polyacrylonitrile film under laser radiations with different wavelengths was investigated by this SERS technique. The extremely low carbonization temperature at room temperature under laser implies several responsible mechanisms.

Abstract:Infrared laser induced photopolymerization of two multifunctional acrylate monomers was studied. Focus was on the influences of the irradiation parameters, such as the irradiation time, irradiation intensity, photoinitiator content and sample thickness, on the double bond conversion. The adopted novel cationic cyanine dye-borate complex (CBC) efficiently initiated the polymerization of acrylate monomers under irradiation of 796nm infrared laser.

Laser Light Scattering Characterization of Special Intractable Macromolecules in Solution

Abstract:This review summerizes the recent advances in characterization of some special intractable macromolecules in solution by laser light scattering. Since both static and dynamic laser light scattering (LLS) are theoretically well established, we focus the discussion on experimental details, such as the design of a high-temperature LLS spectrometer, the sample clarification, a novel differential refractometer, and some newly developed methods for data analysis which include a combination of static and dynamic LLS leading to molar mass distribution determination and LLS calibration of gel permeation chromatography.

Abstract:Poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is an important engineering plastic and evaluation of its local crystallinity in composites is critical for producing strong and reliable mechanical parts. Low wavenumber Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction are promising techniques for the analysis of crystal ordering but a detailed understanding of the spectra has not been established. Here, we use molecular dynamics combined with a newly developed approximation to simulate local vibrational features to understand the effect of intermolecular ordering in the Raman spectra. We found that intermolecular ordering does affect the low wavenumber Raman spectra and the X-ray diffraction as observed in the experiment. Raman spectroscopy of intermolecular vibration modes is a promising technique to evaluate the local crystallinity of PEEK and other engineering plastics, and the present technique offers an estimation without requiring heavy computational resources.

Abstract:By now, it is well known that Raman spectroscopy provides information on the chemical composition of materials, and that said information can be made available in real time–that is, during a reaction. While many types of reactions can be monitored, one of the most important types is polymerization. Polymerization reactions typically involve the loss of a carbon double bond as the chain length is increased, and because the signals from π electrons are strong, the ability to follow this reaction until the end is quite good. However, setting up a polymerization experiment for demonstration purposes can be hazardous. Here, we will show the chemical and spectral changes that occur during the cure of a commercial epoxy.

Advances in Nanoscale Infrared Spectroscopy to Explore Multiphase Polymeric Systems

Abstract:Multiphase polymeric systems encompass local domains with dimensions that can vary from a few tens of nanometers to several micrometers. Their composition is commonly assessed using infrared spectroscopy, which provides an average fingerprint of the various materials contained in the volume probed. However, this approach does not offer any details on the arrangement of the phases in the material. Interfacial regions between two polymeric phases, often in the nanoscale range, are also challenging to access. Photothermal nanoscale infrared spectroscopy monitors the local response of materials excited by infrared light with the sensitive probe of an atomic force microscope (AFM). While the technique is suitable for interrogating small features, such as individual proteins on pristine gold surfaces, the characterization of three-dimensional multicomponent materials is more elusive. This is due to a relatively large volume of material undergoing photothermal expansion, defined by the laser focalization onto the sample and by the thermal properties of the polymeric constituents, compared to the nanoscale region probed by the AFM tip. Using a polystyrene (PS) bead and a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film, we evaluate the spatial footprint of photothermal nanoscale infrared spectroscopy for surface analysis as a function of the position of PS in the PVA film. The effect of the feature position on the nanoscale infrared images is investigated, and spectra are acquired. Some perspectives on the future advances in the field of photothermal nanoscale infrared spectroscopy are provided, considering the characterization of complex systems with embedded polymeric structures.

Abstract:For a range of applications, polymers are now being patterned into nanometer-sized features. In these applications, the robust mechanical properties of the nanostructures are critical for performance and stability. Brillouin light scattering is presented as a nondestructive, noncontact tool used to quantify the elastic constants in such nanostructures. We demonstrate this through a series of thin films and parallel ridges and spacings (gratings) with ridge widths ranging from 180 to 80 nm. For the set of films and structures presented here, the room-temperature elastic moduli did not change with decreasing film thickness or grating ridge width, and this implied that one-dimensional and two-dimensional confinement-induced changes of the mechanical properties were not significant down to feature sizes of 80 nm. Additionally, Brillouin spectra of submicrometer gratings revealed new modes not present in the spectra of thin films. The origin of these new modes remains unclear. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Comprehending the interaction between light and material is crucial to the success of various laser-based processes, including laser powder bed fusion of polymers. The use of the promising near-infrared laser wavelength in laser powder bed fusion of polymers is limited by the need for absorption-enhancing (nano-) additives and insufficient knowledge of the (nano-) particulate impact on the material and process behavior. The presented study lays the groundwork for an improved understanding of the laser-material interaction at different states of matter in laser powder bed fusion by means of thermo-optical measurements with a double integrating sphere setup. The authors characterize polyamide 12 and its nanocomposite powder surface-coated with carbon black nanoparticles by two different additivation methods. The attenuation coefficient and penetration depth of each material were calculated based on the measured transmittance and reflectance in all relevant states of matter. The effects of the feedstock particle size, the nano-additivation method, and the nanoparticle quantity were evaluated. The optical results of resolidified samples were validated using a commercially available spectrophotometer. Finally, the authors were able to qualitatively correlate the thermo-optical results with the depth of fusion of specimens processed at 808 nm.

Abstract:The bonding configuration of the crater walls formed in urethane dimethacrylate-based polymer doped with plasmonic gold nanorods upon irradiation with a single-shot high-energy femtosecond laser pulse has been studied by Raman spectroscopy. New Raman bands were detected in the 2000-2500 cm-1 region of the Raman spectrum the intensities of which showed strong dependence on the concentration of the plasmonic nanoparticles and the energy of the laser pulse. Based on model calculations of the Raman frequencies of the polymer these peaks were attributed to carbon-deuterium and nitrogen-deuterium vibrations. Their appearance might indicate the occurrence of nuclear reactions in the polymer excited by the ultra-strong laser field amplified by the plasmonic nanoparticles.
