Abstract:Extensive researches on scintillators have been executed to satisfy the excellent radiation detection materials in broad applications. However, practical application of conventional scintillators is limited due to the limitations of high cost, time-consuming fabrication process and insufficient radioluminescence. Herein, high density precursor glass doped with Tb3+ was designed to absorb X-ray efficiently and produce green emission. Molecular dynamics simulation was used to simulate the phase separation process in melting process. Then, Tb3+-doped Ba0.84Gd0.16F2.16 glass ceramics (GCs) with excellent structural and optical properties were elaborated by melt quenching technic and further heat treating. Their structural properties, photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray excited luminescence (XEL) were explored detailedly. The internal quantum efficiency of PL is 64 % in GCs. The XEL intensity is 192 % of that of B4Ge3O12 (BGO) commercial scintillator. Our results suggest that Ba0.84Gd0.16F2.16:Tb3+ GCs might have potential application in X-ray detection.
A new BGO crystal with higher radiation hardness

Abstract:A new BGO crystal with higher radiation hardness was successfully developed in the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Academia Sinica. As compared with the normal BGO crystal, the new crystal possesses less radiation damage and faster recovery after 1000–10 000 rad 60Co γ-ray radiation, but with no large change on the light output, energy resolution, transmission and optical uniformity properties.

Abstract:The solid solution crystals, Bi-4(GexSi1-x)(3)O-12 (BGSO) with x = 0, 0.05, and 0.15, have been grown by the modified vertical Bridgman method. The as-grown crystals show 80% of transmittance with an absorption edge of 285 nm. The relative light yields of BGSO crystals are found to be 7.2%, 6.3%, and 4.2% of CsI(Tl) crystal for x = 0, 0.05, and 0.15, respectively. The energy resolutions of these crystals are 18.9%, 21.3%, and 24.7%, respectively, with PMT for 662 keV gamma rays at room temperature when exposed to Cs-137 gamma-ray. The scintillation performance of BGSO crystals clearly deteriorates with the increase of Ge content. However, the appropriate number of germanium ions doped to BSO crystal can improve its crystallization behavior and effectively restrain component segregation. It is expected that large size crystals of BGSO will be grown and applied to the dual readout calorimeter in the nearest future.

Abstract:Bi4Si3O12 (BSO) is an excellent scintillation crystal, and is becoming the desirable candidate for dual-readout calorimeters in high-energy physics. In this work, high quality BSO crystals are successfully grown by the modified Bridgman method. For the first time, its mechanical and thermal properties are investigated and compared with those of the famous scintillation crystal Bi4Ge3O12 ( BGO). The Vickers hardness and fracture toughness of BSO crystal are higher than those of BGO crystal. Its specific heat, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity are measured to be 0.319 J.g(-1).K-1, 1.54 mm(2).s(-1) and 3.29 W.m(-1)K(-1) at 298 K, respectively. The average thermal expansion coefficient is calculated to be 7.07 x 10(-6) K-1 from 300 to 1173 K. Compared with BGO crystal, BSO crystal possesses larger specific heat, thermal conductivity and smaller thermal expansion. These results indicate that BSO crystals possess better mechanical and thermal properties, which will benefit its practical applications.
Effects of annealing on the optical and scintillation properties of reddish Bi4Ge3O12 single crystals

Abstract:Large-size and -scale bismuth germanate (Bi4Ge3O12, BGO) crystals were grown in an oxidizing atmosphere using the modified Bridgman method. Although the growth condition has been optimized, we found a few reddish crystals, resulting in poor performance. In this work, the red-color-induced characteristic absorption bands corresponding to 506, 389, and 332 nm were studied by measuring the optical transmission and absorption spectra. A modified oxygen-annealing was applied to eliminate the reddish in BGO single crystal. Based on the comparison of the optical performance, the absorption band in the visible range of the reddish crystals disappeared after annealing. This phenomenon greatly improved the light output and energy resolution. The effects of annealing in reducing atmosphere were studied. The formation mechanism of crystal coloration was also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the color band in BGO crystal, as accurately undeterminable defect by normal composition and structure analysis, has been analyzed by XRD and its computer simulation, introduction preparation of samples, XRD analysis and step of simulation XRD spectrogram by software Cerius(2). The slight changes of relative strength at XRD peaks of BGO samples both with and without color band defect are discussed using structural factor theory of the diffraction and its XRD results are simulated by software Cerius(2). Analysis indicates that the color band defect is caused by extra Ge in the BGO crystal and therefrom formation of Bi vacancies in cell. At the same time it is shown that analysis of the XRD and its computer simulation is an effective way of crystal material examination.

Abstract:The luminescence properties of 0.5%Pr-doped BGO crystals grown by using the micro-pulling down technique were carefully investigated. Room temperature absorption spectra were registered and analyzed within the framework of the Judd-Ofelt formalism and the best fit to the data is obtained by using a modified treatment allowing for the admixture of intensity enabling wave-functions. The results indicate 3P0 and 1D2 radiative lifetimes of about 5.7 μs and 79 μs, in perfect agreement with the time-constants derived from the measured fluorescence decays at room and liquid-nitrogen temperatures. Registration of time-resolved emission and excitation spectra and calibration of the 3P0 emission spectrum in cross section unit clearly indicate that Pr-doped BGO could be the first isotropic crystalline material leading to efficient diode-pumped laser operation at room temperature with laser performances, at least in the deep-red spectral region, comparable to that found with the most important anisotropic Pr-doped fluoride and oxide crystals.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis, crystal structure and scintillation property of a new compound Ba3InB9O18. This compound crystallizes in space group P63/m with unit cell of dimensions a=7.1359(3)Å, c=16.6151(8)Å and V=732.697Å3 with two Ba3InB9O18 molecular formula. Its crystal structure is made up of planar B3O6 groups parallel to each other along the 〈0001〉 direction, regular InO6 octahedra, irregular BaO6 hexagons and BaO9 polyhedra to form an analog structure of Ba3YB9O18. DTA and TGA curves for Ba3InB9O18 show that it is a chemically stable and congruent melting compound. Its X-ray excited luminescence spectra show an intense emission band in the range of 360–500nm with a maximum at 400nm. Light yield for Ba3InB9O18 is about 75% as large as that for BGO under the same measurement conditions. There may exist a correlation between the scintillation properties and the crystal structural features of Ba3InB9O18.

Abstract:The Nd3+-doped Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO) single-crystal fiber (SCF) was successfully grown by the micro-pulling-down method with the resistance heating system. The fluorescence spectrum and transmission spectrum of the Nd:BGO SCF were measured. Excited by a continuous-wave 808-nm laser diode, a fluorescence peak around 1064 nm was observed. At an absorbed pump power of 15.25 W, the Nd:BGO SCF laser delivered a power of 3.37 W with a slope efficiency of 31.2%.

Abstract:The growth of PbWO4 crystal from high-purity raw material of PbO and WO3 was reported, and the influences of raw material's purity as well as the growth process on the crystal quality were studied. The optical performance and the scintillation characteristics of the crystal were measured, and it was found that a PbWO4 crystal of good quality was obtained.

Abstract:The applications of scintillating fiber in high-resolution medical imaging, remote radiation monitoring, and microbeam radiation therapy have raised a growing demand of bismuth-germanate (BGO) glass fiber. However, the task of construction of colorless BGO glass fiber has been met with limited success. Here, we present a renewable process that can help to achieve BGO scintillating fiber, based on glass relaxation and crystallization mediated dissolution of unexpected Bi center. The experimental results indicate that the strategy can improve the optical transmittance up to more than 73.17% at 483 nm, which is ∼6.28 times higher than that of the conventional material. Importantly, the obtained nanostructured BGO exhibits bright visible luminescence under excitation with X-ray. Furthermore, it can host various types of rare-earth dopants, and the radiation-induced luminescence can be tuned in a wide waveband region from visible to infrared waveband. In addition, colorless BGO fiber with bright emission is also successfully constructed, and the radiation probing test demonstrates the achievement of ∼19.48 times improvement in the detection sensitivity. Our results highlight the approach based on the dynamic glass relaxation may provide new opportunities for construction of scintillating glass fiber and compact radiation fiber detector.

Abstract:In order to find out an optimized method for constructing scintillation crystal detector, a simulation study for light collecting efficiency of scintillation crystal BGO(bismuth germinate) is carried out by means of Monte Carlo method. The simulation results show that the maximum light output (about 59.1% photon is collected) can be obtained when its incident surface is a coarse surface, the other surfaces are polished surfaces and all its surfaces are coated with high reflecting material. Refractive index of the couplant plays an important role for obtaining high light output.

Abstract:BGO single crystals doped with Er3+, Tm3+ and Ho3+ rare-earth ions were prepared in the form of rod-type crystal fibers via the micro-pulling down technique to perform an extensive investigation of their visible, near- and mid-infrared luminescence properties and to really decide on their interest as solid-state laser media in the various spectral domains. Revisiting and completing the absorption spectra already available in the literature led to the derivation of more reliable “effective” radiative lifetimes and branching ratios. Registration of the fluorescence decays of the most important emitting levels versus dopant concentrations led for the first time to an unambiguous determination of “intrinsic” emission lifetimes – corresponding to negligible contributions from inter-ionic energy-transfers - and non-radiative multiphonon relaxation rates. Such data also allowed for the determination of the dominant phonon energy which comes into play in the electron-phonon coupling responsible for these multiphonon relaxation processes and for its lattice vibration origin, i.e. a high phonon energy of the order of 820 cm−1 corresponding to the coupling between bending vibrations of (GeO4)4- tetrahedra and vibrations corresponding to motions of these (GeO4)4- tetrahedra against the Bi3+ ions for which the rare-earth dopant ions substitute. Using the above data and different methods for the calibration of the registered emission spectra in cross section unit and for the derivation of gain cross section curves finally show that mid-infrared emissions of Er:BGO, Tm:BGO and Ho:BGO around 1.55 μm, 1.9 μm and 2 μm, respectively, occur with comparable gain cross sections as in the most important reference mid-infrared laser materials, although over slightly shifted thus complementary spectral domains. It is shown that potentialities also exist with Tm:BGO in the blue, deep-red and near-infrared spectral domains around 470 nm, 800 nm and 1.45 μm, by pumping the crystals with conventional pump sources and using some suitable co-dopants to avoid detrimental self-terminating processes.

Abstract:A crack-free GdTaO4 single crystal as a promising high-density scintillator is grown successfully by the Czochralski method. High crystalline quality of the as-grown crystal has been demonstrated by its X-ray rocking curve. Its density is 8.94 g cm−3, which is the highest among current inorganic single-crystal scintillators. The absolute light yield of GTO is about three times as that of PbWO4 and the scintillation decay consists of a fast component of 72.6 ns and a slow component of 1236.2 ns. Additionally, the photoluminescence measurements of GTO indicate a complicated mechanism. Its fundamental physical properties including hardness, density, and thermal properties are determined for the first time, which are very important for crystal growth and its applications.

Abstract:Bismuth germanium oxide ($\rm Bi_{4} Ge_{3} O_{12}$, BGO) scintillation crystals are widely used as detectors in the fields of particle physics and astrophysics due to their high density, and thus higher efficiency for gamma-ray detection. Owing to their good chemical stability, they can be used in any environment. For rare-event searches, such as dark matter and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, BGO crystals are essential to comprehend the response of nuclear recoil. In this study, we have analyzed the events of neutron elastic scattering with oxygen in BGO crystals. Then, we have measured the quenching factor for oxygen recoil energy in the BGO crystal as a function of recoil energy by using a monoenergetic neutron source.

Abstract:The newly developed IR nonlinear optical (NLO) material BaGa4Se7(BGSe) has aroused intense research interest owing to its excellent overall properties and outstanding IR laser output performance. In this paper, the growth of high-quality large-size BGSe was investigated. To overcome the difficulty of realizing the large-scale complete reaction among the highly active metal Ba, the liquid metal Ga, and the nonmetal with high vapor pressure Se, a two temperature-zone synthetic technique was developed, and over 300 g BGSe polycrystalline raw material with high purity was synthesized at one time. To avoid the crystal cracking and increase the usage for preparing NLO device, a crystal seed with appropriate orientation was selected for vertical Bridgman technique and high-quality crystals with dimensions up to Phi 40 mm x 150 mm were grown successfully. The BGSe crystals exhibit high transmittance over a wide transparent range and the absorption coefficient was estimated around 0.04 cm(-1) in the range of 1-13 mu m. Moreover, via the two zone thermal annealing under the atmosphere of BGSe powder vapor, the transmittance of BGSe has been significantly improved.

Abstract:BGSO polycrystalline powder was synthesized as starting material by sintering of 4N Ge2O3, SiO2 and Bi2O3 using solid state reaction method. Using 〈010〉-oriented Bi4Si3O12 crystals as seeds, the mixed crystals of (Bi4(GexSi1−x)3O12, x=0.05, 0.1, 0.15, BGSO) have been grown by the vertical Bridgman method. Transparent BGSO crystals with a size up to 10×15×30mm3 have been obtained. The lattice parameters increase monotonically with increasing Ge3+ content. The transmittance spectra of BGSO single crystals were achieved in the UV and visible light regions and the absorption edge of BGSO crystal is about 285nm.

Abstract:A new GYSGG (Gd0.63Y2.37Sc2Ga3O12) crystal with high quality was successfully grown by Czochralski method. The structure and transmission spectrum were investigated. The lattice constant of GYSGG was larger than those of the currently used crystals GGG and CaMgZr:GGG, ranging in YSGG and GSGG. The crystal substrate with various lattice constants can be obtained for applications by adjusting the proportions of Gd and Y in the GYSGG crystal. Further, the rocking curves of three different crystalline faces exhibit symmetric shape and small full width at half maximum (FWHM), suggesting that the crystal has good crystalline integrity. The dislocation etching pits of three different crystalline faces were also investigated. The transmission spectrum indicates that the crystal has a wide band in transmission, from which the refractive index curve is calculated and sellmeier equation coefficients are fitted. Therefore, the GYSGG is not only an excellent laser host crystal, but also a window material with wide wave band, suggesting that it has potential applications as new magnetic bubble substrate with an adjustable and larger lattice constant.

Abstract:Two large crystals of bismuth germanate (BGO) were studied with sources and in a pion beam. The response and uniformity have been investigated with several types of reflectors. The temperature dependence of the emitted light was determined, as well as the timing resolution. As the crystal is intended to be part of a large array with very good energy resolution in the detection of high-energy gamma rays and electrons, uniformities of better than 0.5% are required. Various methods to achieve this are discussed. Results from beam and source measurements show that the relative root-mean-square deviation of the output peak positions for the detection of gamma-rays interacting at different regions in a 24-cm-long truncated pyramid BGO crystal with MgO reflectance coating covered by aluminized mylar and black tape is about 1%.<>

Abstract:Bismuth silicate (Bi4Si3O12, BSO) crystal, as a nonlinear optical material with excellent optical properties, has a wide range of applications in laser technology, optical communication, and optical information processing. In order to further improve its performance, this study adopts a first principles calculation method based on density functional theory (DFT), selects Gd3+ as the dopant, and calculates and explores the changes in optical properties of BSO crystals after doping with 1/12, 1/6, and 1/3Gd3+. The calculation results show that the doping of Gd3+ changes the electronic structure of BSO crystals, which is manifested in the emergence of new light absorption and emission characteristics, an increase in carrier concentration, an improvement in conductivity, and an enhancement of crystal polarization ability in optical properties. In addition, doping with Gd3+ increases the light transmission rate and reduces energy loss of BSO crystals, while releasing more energy during electron band transitions, effectively improving the luminescence performance of BSO crystals. The theoretical research in this article provides an important theoretical basis for understanding the influence of Gd3+ doping on the optical properties of BSO, and by optimizing the ratio of Gd3+, the optical properties of BSO can be further regulated, opening up new possibilities for its application in optoelectronic devices.
