Abstract:Semiconductor microcrystallites in glass exhibit interesting optical properties different from bulk crystals because of the quantum size effects. In this paper, the optical properties of Bi2S3 doped glass and the method of preparing Bi2S3 doped glass lumps and thin films by the sol-gel process have been researched, and some interesting results are acquired. The size of the microcrystallites in glass heated for different times at 400C is decided by the method of HRTEM. The diffraction fringes are clearly found as some small size (<10 nm) microcrystallites occur. In the transmission spectrum of Bi2S3-doped thin film, the valleys are characterized as Bi2S3 microcrystallites. In the spectrum of the non-doped film, any characteristic valleys are not found. The valleys are found red-shift with longer-treatment time at 500C. We can obtain the following formula from Efros' model and the L-S model: E = Eg + ct-2/3eE/KT = Eg + c(T)t-2/3 From the relationship between the energy of the optical transmission valley and the -2/3 root of the treatment time at 500C, that is, E-t-2/3, it can be concluded that the red-shift of the valleys exhibit the evidence of the quantum size effects and the particles growth obeys the L-S model. It is also seen that the emission peak of the Bi2S3-doped glass becomes longer as the excited wavelength is longer from 345 to 540 nm. It is attributed to the broad distribution of particle size in glass.
