Abstract:The absorption rate of ultraviolet could be used to measure the concentration of organic pollutant, as most of the organic pollutant has stronger absorption rate in ultraviolet region in water. In the present paper, principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares (PLS), and support vector machine (SVM) were respectively used to model a regression model after the spectrum preprocessing, such as smoothing, derivation, standard normal variate transformation (SNV), etc. Then, the concentration of organic pollutant could be measured via the ultraviolet spectrum and the regression model. In the experiments, a group of water samples from the wastewater treatment process were used to verify the effects of the various preprocessing and modeling approaches. The results showed that for the good spectrum data, direct modeling without the spectrum pretreatment could be used since the pretreatment would worsen the results. LSSVM approach is more applicable in the case of small-size samples.

Abstract:In this work, a rapid analysis method basing on ultraviolet spectroscopy was established for the determination of danshensu, protocatechuic aldehyde, rosmarinci acid, lithospermic acid and salvianolic acid B in the extraction process of Danhong injection. In the extraction process of Danshen and Honghua crude drugs, 44 extraction solution samples were collected and the contents of the five components were determined by HPLC analysis. The ultraviolet spectra of the samples were collected. Partial least square regression was used to establish the multivariate calibration models between the ultraviolet spectra and the contents of the five components. The results showed that the established models could predict the contents of the five components in the extraction solution accurately. The ultraviolet spectroscopy method established in this work can be used for rapid analysis of the intermediates of Danhong injection, which may be applied for the quality control in the manufacturing process.

Abstract:The resonance radiation study is a powerful means in obtaining valuable information concerning the behavior of individual atoms and molecules. Various quantitative techniques are available in order to determine the amount of analyte and analysis of trace elements in the sample. Some technique uses the principle, when the number of atoms in the path of light increases, the amount of light absorption increases. While other techniques use dissociation of chemical compound free atoms by supplying enough thermal energy. In this paper, an attempt is made to compare various analytical methods with their merits and demerits and the reasons for popularity of atomic absorption spectroscopy among researchers. Elemental analysis using atomic absorption spectroscopy of various elements that are found in nature particularly in foods and environment is also presented.

Abstract:Compared with the traditional approaches, UV-Vis spectroscopy is gaining growing acceptance in the field of online water-quality monitoring as an effective method for water quality analysis. UV-Vis spectroscopy has the advantages of fast response, low maintenance costs, and no secondary pollution. In the present paper, the principle of water quality analysis by UV-Vis spectroscopy is introduced. Existing researches on the online analysis of water quality using UV-Vis spectrum and data fusion technologies are comprehensively reviewed. The applications of UV-Vis based methods in multi-parameter water-quality monitoring, water-quality classification, and water-quality alarm are also discussed. Finally, future research directions are outlined.

Abstract:Raman spectra obtained in conditions of resonance with electronic excitations are often dominated by transitions that are very weak in the normal off-resonance spectrum. These enhanced bands can be used to determine the symmetry of the resonant excited electronic state if this state gives rise to a forbidden transition. In this case the most strongly enhanced bands correspond to binary combinations and overtones of the vibronic promoting modes active in the transition. The use of this method to determine the symmetry of excited states of butadiene and benzene is presented.1,2 The most strongly enhanced vibrations associated with resonance with allowed electronic transitions are those that have large projections along the geometry change associated with excitation. Recent results for a series of substituted ethylene species are presented. Resonance with excitations that have both allowed and induced vibronic character gives rise to characteristic fundamental transitions of the promoting modes. The case of substituted benzene molecules is discussed.

Abstract:Atomic spectrometry and atomic mass spectrometric (MS) techniques have been playing crucial roles in the field of biosciences. They detect elements with relatively high sensitivities and are thus applicable to a wide range of analytical targets. In the past decade, determination of bio-relevant metallic elements continues to be of interest, while particularly noteworthy are methods developed for small molecules, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids and even cells that well exploited the bio-analytical strengths of atomic spectrometry and atomic MS, either in a direct or indirect manner. Quantitation, as well as speciation and imaging analyses are all involved. The present review aims to assimilate recent advances in bio-analysis utilizing atomic spectrometry and atomic MS, primarily covering the period of 2013–2018, in an attempt to provide readers insight into the developing trends of this research frontier. Followed by concluding remarks and perspectives, the applications are divided into the following four catalogs: (i) toxicologically important metal-containing species, with an emphasis on quantitative and imaging analysis; (ii) quantitation of biomolecules using naturally occurring heteroatoms; (iii) exogenous metal ion or nanoparticle tagging-based strategies in bioassays; and (iv) label-free detection of biomolecules.

Abstract:The work function of different samples was tested in air using photoelectron emission spectrometer.The model AC-2 photoelectron emission spectrometer is an instrument based on low energy electron counting detection method ,in which the deuterium lamp is used as the ultraviolet light source ,and the open counter is used as the detector. The results show that the photoelectron emission spectrometer in air is a flexible system which is easy to use suitable for all levels of expertise and opens the way to a new dimension in surface analysis. The work function test experiment is introduced to strengthen the ability of students with the combination of theory and practice ,so as to provide references for scientific research or actual production .

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel technique of Raman-atomic force microscopy (AFM) combining micro region Raman spectroscopy and AFM imaging. An in-situ probe unit which can simultaneously realize the detection of Raman spectrum and the measurement of AFM image was designed, and a related Raman-AFM system was constructed. Using this system, some experiments were carried out to acquire micro region Raman spectra and AFM images of ZnO nano-particle and TiO2 film. The results show that the Raman spectra of both samples are in agreement with theoretical vaues, and the AFM images represent their micro/nano-structures quite well. These researches prove the feasibility of the Raman-AFM technique which has the potential of being widely applied in the fields of Raman spectroscopy and micro/nano-technology.

Abstract:This work presents an exploratory study of monitoring the transformation process of salvianolic acid A (SAA) using an online UV spectroscopic analysis system. A chemometrics approach, based on multivariate curve resolution of spectrophotometric matrix, was applied to resolve the concentration and spectra profiles of reactant species and to evaluate the kinetic profile. Kinetic runs have been developed at temperatures ranging from 25 to 90 degrees C and pH values ranging from 2.5 to 10 in order to investigate the effects of these two variables during the transformation process of SAA. The degradation reaction of SAA was considered as first-order and the degradation kinetic constant of SAA increases when temperature increases. It was also found that SAA transforms rapidly when pH is higher than 7, but remains stable when pH is lower than 6.5. Two transformation products were auxiliarily identified by direct mass spectrometric analysis using Mass Work software. Our results suggest that the manufacturing process of Chinese medicine preparations with SAA as the main bioactive compound should not be operated at high temperature and high pH.

Abstract:Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) has emerged as a powerful analytical technique in estimating various atoms by the measurement of light energy of specific wavelength. This employs usually three different analytical techniques such as atomic emission, atomic absorption and atomic fluorescence. The AAS can measure even trace concentrations of various elements with higher degree of sensitivity and precision. Therefore, AAS possesses considerable position in the modern analytical laboratories. The present review highlights the various components of atomic absorption spectrophotometer, different types of AAS and applications of atomic absorption spectroscopy in various fields such as pharmaceuticals, food, biological, geological, metallurgical, environmental, forensic and marine applications.

Abstract:Analytical atomic spectrometry is a well-established and widely-used analytical technique for the sensitive detection of inorganic elements in diverse samples. Sample pretreatment methods are still a critical part of elemental analysis, which are usually used to remove interfering matrix components and preconcentrate the targets of interest before analysis. Significant advances in the development of sample separation and preconcentration techniques for elemental analysis have been made in recent years. This review focuses on the applications of sample separation and preconcentration techniques for analytical atomic spectrometry, including liquid phase (micro)extraction, cloud point extraction, solid phase (micro)extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, chemical vapor generation as well as hyphenated techniques. This review presents several applications of the above sample pretreatment methods in recent years, whose advantages and drawbacks were also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we report a method and experiment system developed by us to useful for temporal and spatial temperature distribution of the flame for atomic obsorption spectroscopy in detail. The method and system principle is based on the modified sodium line reversal method. The studies on temporal (20–50 μsec range) and spatial (π 1mm) resolution of the flame temperature aim at establishing optimum analysis conditions and improving analysis characteristics of flame atomic absorption/emission spectroscopy.

Abstract:The applications of nano-surface chemistry in the field of spectral analysis have attracted growing interest in recent years. In this article, we reviewed the applications of nanomaterials-based chemical reactions for spectral analysis, including the development in plasma-catalysis, surface-enhanced spectroscopy, separation and preconcentration, chemical vapor generation, labeling and signal amplification. Introduction of nano-surface chemistry to spectral analysis not only improves the sensitivity and selectivity, broadens the application range of spectral analysis, but also affords analytical community special characterization tools.

Abstract:With 135 references, this review presents the recent application of various preconcentration and separation techniques in atomic fluorescence spectrometry for the sensitive determination and speciation of various elements and their species. It focuses on sample pretreatment, separation, and enrichment-related techniques, including liquid–liquid extraction, solid-phase (micro)extraction, microwave/ultrasound-assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, as well as chemical vapor generation. In this review, the historical development and overview of these preconcentration and separation methodologies are briefly discussed, together with a comprehensive collection of application of these methods in combination with atomic fluorescence spectrometry for determination of ultratrace amounts of elements and their species in various sample matrices (liquids and solids).

A Method to Evaluate Spectral Analysis by Spectroscopy

Abstract:Visible and near infrared spectroscopy has been widely used to develop a method for rapidly determining organic carbon in soils or sediments (SOC). Most of these studies concentrated on how to establish a good spectral model but ignored how to evaluate the method, such as the use of detection range (max and min), resolution and error for SOC spectral analysis. Here, we proposed a method to evaluate the spectral analysis of SOC. Using 96 sediments sampled in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, China, we established three spectral models of SOC after collecting their spectral reflectance by Agilent Cary 5000, ASD FieldSpec 4 and Ocean Optics QEPro, respectively. For both the calibration set and validation set in each spectrometer, the predicted SOC concentrations followed a distribution curve (function), in which the x-axis was the SOC concentrations. Using these curves, we developed these four technical parameters. The detection ranges were the SOC concentrations where the curve was near to or crossing with the lateral axis, while the detection resolution was the average difference between the two neighboring SOC concentrations. The detection errors were the differences between the predicted SOC and the measured SOC. Results showed that these technical parameters were better in the bench-top spectrometer (Cary 5000) than those in the portable spectrometers when analyzing the same samples. For the portable spectrometers, QEPro had a broader detection range and more consistent detection error than FieldSpec 4, suggesting that the low-cost QEPro performed as well as the high-cost FieldSpec 4. This study provides a good example for evaluating spectral analysis by spectroscopy, which can support the development of the spectral method.

Abstract:Tendencies in five main branches of atomic spectrometry (absorption, emission, mass, fluorescence and ionization spectrometry) are considered. The first three techniques are the most widespread and universal, with the best sensitivity attributed to atomic mass spectrometry. In the direct elemental analysis of solid samples, the leading roles are now conquered by laser-induced breakdown and laser ablation mass spectrometry, and the related techniques with transfer of the laser ablation products into inductively-coupled plasma. Advances in design of diode lasers and optical parametric oscillators promote developments in fluorescence and ionization spectrometry and also in absorption techniques where uses of optical cavities for increased effective absorption pathlength are expected to expand. Prospects for analytical instrumentation are seen in higher productivity, portability, miniaturization, incorporation of advanced software, automated sample preparation and transition to the multifunctional modular architecture. Steady progress and growth in applications of plasma- and laser-based methods are observed. An interest towards the absolute (standardless) analysis has revived, particularly in the emission spectrometry.
