Abstract:We derive interior curvature bounds for admissible solutions of a class of curvature equations subject to affine Dirichlet data, generalizing a well-known estimate of Pogorelov for equations of Monge-Ampere type. For equations for which convexity of the solution is the natural ellipticity assumption, the curvature bound is proved for solutions with C-1,C-1 Dirichlet data. We also use the curvature bounds to improve and extend various existence results for the Dirichlet and Plateau problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we give several new approaches to study interior estim-ates for a class of fourth order equations of Monge-Ampere type. First, we prove interior estimates for the homogeneous equation in dimension two by using the par-tial Legendre transform. As an application, we obtain a new proof of the Bernstein theorem without using Caffarelli-Gutierrez's estimate, including the Chern conjec-ture on affine maximal surfaces. For the inhomogeneous equation, we also obtain a new proof in dimension two by an integral method relying on the Monge-Ampere Sobolev inequality. This proof works even when the right-hand side is singular. In higher dimensions, we obtain the interior regularity in terms of integral bounds on the second derivatives and the inverse of the determinant.

Abstract:We study the exterior Dirichlet problem for the homogeneous $k$-Hessian equation. The prescribed asymptotic behavior at infinity of the solution is zero if $k<\frac{n}{2}$, it is $\log|x|+O(1)$ if $k=\frac{n}{2}$ and it is $|x|^{\frac{2k-n}{n}}+O(1)$ if $k>\frac{n}{2}$. By constructing smooth solutions of approximating non-degenerate $k$-Hessian equations with uniform $C^{1,1}$-estimates, we prove the existence part. The uniqueness follows from the comparison theorem and thus the $C^{1,1}$ regularity of the solution of the homogeneous $k$-Hessian equation in the exterior domain is proved. We also prove a uniform positive lower bound of the gradient. As an implication of the $C^{1,1}$ estimates, we derive an almost monotonicity formula along the level set of the approximating solution. In particular, we get an weighted geometric inequality which is a natural generalization of the $k=1$ case.

Abstract:We establish interior $W^{2,\delta}$ type estimates for a class of degenerate fully nonlinear elliptic equations with $L^n$ data. The main idea of our approach is to slide $C^{1,\alpha}$ cones, instead of paraboloids, vertically to touch the solution, and estimate the contact set in terms of the measure of the vertex set. This shows that the solution has tangent $C^{1,\alpha}$ cones almost everywhere, which leads to the desired Hessian estimates. Accordingly, we are able to develop a kind of counterpart to the estimates for divergent structure quasilinear elliptic problems.

Abstract:We consider the numerical solution of the linear Klein- Gordon equation in R 2 and R-3. An artificial boundary is introduced to obtain a bounded computational domain. On the given artificial boundary, the exact boundary condition and a series of approximating boundary conditions are constructed, which are called absorbing boundary conditions. By using either the exact or approximating boundary conditions on the artificial boundary, the original problem is reduced to either an equivalent or an approximately equivalent initial- boundary value problem on the bounded computational domain. The uniqueness of the approximate problem is then proved. The numerical results demonstrate that the method given in this paper is effective and feasible.

Abstract:We prove an Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci type estimate, which involves the integral of the determinant of the complex Hessian over a certain subset. It improves the classical ABP estimate adapted (by inequality $2^{2n}|\det(u_{i\bar{j}})|^2\geq |\det(\nabla^2u)|$) to complex setting. We give an application of it to derive sharp gradient estimates for complex Monge-Ampère equations. The approach is based on the De Giorgi iteration method developed by Guo-Phong-Tong for equations of complex Monge-Ampère type.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the interior $C^2$ regularity problem for the Hessian quotient equation $\left(\frac{\sigma_n}{\sigma_k}\right)(D^2u)=f$. We give a complete answer to this longstanding problem: for $k=n-1,n-2$, we establish an interior $C^2$ estimate; for $k\leq n-3$, we show that interior $C^2$ estimate fails by finding a singular solution.

Abstract:Singular fourth-order Abreu equations have been used to approximate minimizers of convex functionals subject to a convexity constraint in dimensions higher than or equal to two. For Abreu type equations, they often exhibit different solvability phenomena in dimension one and dimensions at least two. We prove the analogues of these results for the variational problem and singular Abreu equations in dimension one, and use the approximation scheme to obtain a characterization of limiting minimizers to the one-dimensional variational problem.

Abstract:Convergence and continuity analyses as well as exact evaluation of non-uniform subdivision surfaces at arbitrary parameter values have been very difficult because the subdivision matrix varies at each iteration step, unlike uniform subdivision surfaces. Using eigenanalysis and convergence properties of non-uniform subdivision surfaces that have been given by authors recently, a parameterization approach for non-uniform subdivision surfaces is developed, and an evaluation method for values and derivatives of non-uniform Catmull-Clark surfaces at arbitrary parameters is presented by means of a non-iterative approach. Generalized basis functions for non-uniform Catmull-Clark surfaces are derived. Thus we further disprove the prejudice that non-uniform subdivision surfaces cannot be evaluated exactly.
Stability estimates of Nyström discretizations of Helmholtz decomposition boundary integral equation formulations for the solution of Navier scattering problems in two dimensions with Dirichlet boundary conditions

Abstract:Helmholtz decompositions of elastic fields is a common approach for the solution of Navier scattering problems. Used in the context of Boundary Integral Equations (BIE), this approach affords solutions of Navier problems via the simpler Helmholtz boundary integral operators (BIOs). Approximations of Helmholtz Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) can be employed within a regularizing combined field strategy to deliver BIE formulations of the second kind for the solution of Navier scattering problems in two dimensions with Dirichlet boundary conditions, at least in the case of smooth boundaries. Unlike the case of scattering and transmission Helmholtz problems, the approximations of the DtN maps we use in the Helmholtz decomposition BIE in the Navier case require incorporation of lower order terms in their pseudodifferential asymptotic expansions. The presence of these lower order terms in the Navier regularized BIE formulations complicates the stability analysis of their Nyström discretizations in the framework of global trigonometric interpolation and the Kussmaul-Martensen kernel singularity splitting strategy. The main difficulty stems from compositions of pseudodifferential operators of opposite orders, whose Nyström discretization must be performed with care via pseudodifferential expansions beyond the principal symbol. The error analysis is significantly simpler in the case of arclength boundary parametrizations and considerably more involved in the case of general smooth parametrizations which are typically encountered in the description of one dimensional closed curves.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an inverse problem of determining an unknown boundary in $\mathcal{R}^{2}$ where a Neumann condition is imposed. A stability $\mathrm{e}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{i}_{1}\mathrm{n}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{e}$ under some a-priori assumptions on the unknown boundary and the solution of the problem is obtained. The proofs are based on using the complex extension method, an estimation of harmonic measure, and our recent stability estimation results for an inverse boundary problem of Laplace’s equation on non-smooth domain.

Abstract:We study the solvability of singular Abreu equations which arise in the approximation of convex functionals subject to a convexity constraint. Previous works established the solvability of their second boundary value problems either in two dimensions, or in higher dimensions under either a smallness condition or a radial symmetry condition. Here, we solve the higher dimensional case by transforming singular Abreu equations into linearized Monge-Ampère equations with drifts. We establish global Hölder estimates for the linearized Monge-Ampère equation with drifts under suitable hypotheses, and then use them to the regularity and solvability of the second boundary value problem for singular Abreu equations in higher dimensions. Many cases with general right-hand side will also be discussed.
