Abstract:Nonstoichiometric LiFePO4 microspheres synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal process were investigated systematically. The molar ratio of Li: Fe in the starting materials is controlled in a range between 1.15 and 1.0, and the corresponding products are denoted as Li1+xFePO4 (0≤x≤0.15). The effects of nonstoichiometry on composition, morphology and electrochemical performance of the as-synthesized LiFePO4 cathode material were analyzed. By introducing a proper excess of lithium content into the starting materials, Li1.08FePO4, which was demonstrated to be the optimized composition, exhibited the highest rate capacity. This improvement was attributed to the absence of impurity phase or Li vacancy in Li1.08FePO4 composite. The results indicate that nonstoichiometric synthesis can control the components of LiFePO4 cathode material obtained by microwave-assisted hydrothermal process, hence effectively improving the electrochemical performance.
