Abstract:Growing MnO2 nanocrystals in the bulk of porous carbon nanofibers is conducted in a KMnO4 aqueous solution aimed to enhance the electrochemical performance of MnO2. The rate of redox reaction between KMnO4 and carbon was controlled by the concentration of KMnO4 in a neutral solution. The MnO2 nanoparticles grow along with (211) crystal faces when the redox reaction happens on the surface of fibers under 1D constraint, while the nanoparticles grow along with (200) crystal faces when the redox reaction happens in the bulk of fibers under 3D constraint. The composite, where MnO2 nanoparticles are formed in the bulk under a constraint, yields an electrode material for supercapacitors showing good electron transport, rapid ion penetration, fast and reversible Faradaic reaction, and excellent rate performance. The capacitance of the composite electrode could be 1282 F g-1 under a current density of 0.2 A g-1 in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. A symmetric supercapacitor delivers energy density of 36 Wh kg-1 with power density of 39 W kg-1, and can maintain 7.5 Wh kg-1 at 10.3 kW kg-1. It exhibits an excellent electrochemical cycling stability with 101% initial capacitance and 95% columbic efficiency even after 1000 cycles of charge/discharge.

Abstract:Composites of MnO2 nanosheet arrays vertically grown on the surface of vapor-grown carbon fibers (VGCFs) are fabricated by a low-temperature redox reaction between KMnO4 and the VGCFs. An assembled AC/0.5 M K2SO4/MnO2@VGCF electrochemical capacitor exhibits a higher specific capacitance, as well as a better rate capability, at a fast-current density compared to the capacitor built on hydrothermally prepared, standalone MnO2. Electrochemical tests revealed that VGCFs act as a conducting matrix, which effectively improves the conductivity of MnO2 nanosheets during cycling.

Abstract:MnO2–MWNT–Ni foam supercapacitor electrodes were developed based on directly grown multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and hydrothermal MnO2 nanostructures on Ni foam substrates. The electrodes demonstrated excellent electrochemical and battery properties. The charge transfer resistance dropped 88.8% compared with the electrode without MWNTs. A high specific capacitance of 1350.42 F·g−1 was reached at the current density of 6.5 A·g−1. The electrode exhibited a superior rate capability with 92.5% retention in 25,000 cycles. Direct MWNT growth benefits the supercapacitor application for low charge transfer resistance and strong MWNT–current collector binding.

Abstract:MnO2 nanosheets were successfully grown in situ on the surface of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) via a facile microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. This environmentally-friendly approach displays the advantages of low temperature, short reaction time and low cost. A series of MnO2/ACFs composites with different MnO2 percentages were prepared and their electrochemical performance as an electrode for supercapacitors was investigated. The 63% MnO2 composite showed the optimal charge storage performance, remarkable rate ability, and excellent cycling capability. The enhanced electrochemical performance is attributed to the combination of good electrical conductivity of ACFs and high capacity of MnO2. This work provides a useful insight into the design and fabrication of hierarchical transition metal oxide and carbon material composite electrodes for potential applications in next generation energy storage systems.

Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO2) is a promising pseudocapacitive electrode material because of its high capacitance, abundant resource, low-cost, and environmental friendliness. However, its poor electrical and ionic conductivities and low stability hinder applications. Forming MnO2 nanocomposites with high surface area porous metal, carbon materials, or conducting polymers is a possible solution. In this work, we have developed a facile and scalable asymmetric in situ deposition method to incorporate MnO2 nanoparticles in conductive single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films. The high porosity of vacuum filtrated SWCNT films accommodates pseudocapacitive MnO2 nanoparticles without sacrificing the mechanical flexibility and electrochemical stability of SWCNT films. We exposed one side of SWCNT films to acidic potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution. The infiltrated KMnO4 solution partially etches SWCNTs to create abundant mesopores, which ensure electrolyte ions efficiently access deposited MnO2. Meanwhile, the remaining SWCNT network serves as excellent current collectors. The electrochemical performance of the SWCNT–MnO2 composite electrodes depends on the porosity of SWCNT films, pH, and concentration of KMnO4 solution, deposition temperature and time. Our optimized two-electrode electrochemical capacitor, with 1M Na2SO4 in water as electrolyte, showed a superior performance with specific capacitance of 529.8Fg−1, energy density of 73.6Whkg−1, power density of 14.6kWkg−1, excellent capacitance retention (99.9%) after 2000 charge and discharge cycles, and one of the highest reported frequency responses (knee frequency at 1318Hz). The high performance flexible electrochemical capacitors have broad applications in portable electronics and electrical vehicles, especially when high frequency response is desired.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors with extremely high areal capacitances are of great significance in wearable electronics. Here, we report fast fabrication of high mass loading monocrystalline FeMnO3 on highly conductive carbon cloth (CC) textiles within just 1 min through a molten salt route. The heavily loaded (10.7 mg cm(-2)), binder-free FeMnO3@CC electrode exhibits a preeminent highest areal capacitance of 11.02 F cm(-2) when working as a negative electrode at 2 mV s(-1), thanks to the monocrystalline characteristic and the activated carbon substrate. Because of the multivalence change, it is appropriately applied as electrodes in a symmetric supercapacitor, which operates at an extremely high potential (1.6 V) and achieves outstanding areal performance (capacitance of 3.6 F cm(-2) at 10 mA cm(-2), energy density of 1.28 mWh cm(-2) at 8.12 mW cm(-2)) as well as excellent gravimetric and volumetric properties. We also record an outstanding cycling stability at 10 mA cm(-2), which is 91% of the first areal capacitance maintained after 20 000 cycles. This study reveals an encouraging application prospect when considering the low-cost, fast-fabrication of supercapacitor electrodes exhibiting merits of high mass loading, hierarchical structure, boosted conductivity, and structural stability.

Abstract:Ultrathin MnO2 nanosheets grown on the surface of hollow carbon spheres (MnO2/HCSs) were fabricated by the redox reaction between carbon spheres with KMnO4 in aqueous solution. Due to the porous structure and large amounts of active sites, MnO2/HCSs exhibit excellent capacitive performance with 227.5 Fg−1 at 1 Ag−1. After 5000 cycles, the capacity retention of MnO2/HCSs remains 96%, indicating its good cycling stability. These results demonstrate that MnO2/HCSs are promising supercapacitor electrode material and this work provide a facile method for growth of ultrathin MnO2 nanosheets on carbon substrate.

Abstract:A facile method has been developed to grow MnO2 nanoparticles on hybrid carbon nanofibers (MnO2/HCNFs) for flexible supercapacitors (SCs). The hybrid carbon nanofibers (HCNFs) could be serviced as a buffer layer to improve the conductivity of MnO2 and enhance the interface contact between MnO2 and carbon nanofibers. The flexible SCs based on MnO2/HCNFs hybrid structure exhibited good electrochemical performance, extraordinary flexibility and superior cycle lifetime. Specific capacitance of the flexible SCs was 803.6 mAh g(-1) at the scan rate of 20 mV s(-1). Maximum specific energy (power) density was 20.1 Wh/kg (230.4 W/kg). (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Carbon cloth is a promising new material for the electrodes of supercapacitors, owing to their high surface area, flexibility, high conductivity with chemical stability. In this work, MnO2 was electrodeposited on a commercially available post treated carbon cloth. The MnO2 deposited carbon cloth was examined using HRSEM, which reveals the formation of nanosized irregular structure of MnO2 over the carbon cloth. Electrochemical study was performed which revealed the specific capacitance of 483 Fg–1 at a scan rate of 10mVs–1. The fabricated device exhibited good electrochemical performance with energy density of 22WKg–1 at a power density 330KWKg–1. The results were convincing to use this material for high power applications.

Abstract:Herein, a facile co-deposition method is developed to synthesize carbon nanotube (CNT)@MnO2 heterostructures grown on carbon fibre paper (CFP) and flexible carbon fibre cloth (CFC) (denoted as CNT@MnO2/CFP and CNT@MnO2/CFC, respectively). A three-dimensional (3D) interconnected CNT network of highly conductive, ultrathin CNT@MnO2 heterostructure nanosheets with a nanoporous structure and with epitaxial growth of MnO2 on the CNTs achieves excellent capacitance performance for flexible MnO2-based supercapacitor materials. The CNT@MnO2/CFP fabricated in an electrolyte with CNT content of 0.5 g L−1 (0.5-CNT@MnO 2/CFP) obtains mass, area and volume specific capacitance values of 393.0 F g−1, 585.0 mF cm−2 and 29.3 F cm−3, respectively, at a charge-discharge rate of 0.25 A g−1. A flexible asymmetric supercapacitor device was successfully assembled which possesses a high energy density of 27.8 Wh kg−1 at a high power density of 250 W kg−1 (0.75 mA cm−2) and a high capacitance retention of 84% after 10,000 performs at a charge-discharge rate of 15 mA cm−2 (5 A g−1). Our work confirmed that this structure can effectively improving the utilization and specific capacitance of MnO2, and the simplicity of the fabrication and the environmentally friendly characteristics of the deposition liquid make this approach suitable for practical production.

Preparation of Flexible Substrate Electrode for Supercapacitor With High-Performance MnO2 Stalagmite Nanorod Arrays

Abstract:A large-area MnO2 stalagmite nanorod arrays (SNAs) growing vertically on flexible substrates were successfully fabricated by an easy heat-electrodeposition method. The large specific capacitance (646.4 F g-1 at 500 mA g-1) and excellent rate capability (42.3% retention with 40 times of increase) indicate that the prepared MnO2 SNAs flexible electrode has outstanding electrochemical performance. Furthermore, after 5,000 repetitions of CV tests, the overall specific capacitance could retain ~101.2% compared with the initial value meant a long cycling life. These outstanding properties could be ascribed to the effective conductive transport path between Ni substrate and MnO2 nanorods, and owing to the stalagmite like structure of MnO2 nanorods, the exposed sufficient active sites are beneficial to the electrolyte infiltration.

Abstract:In this paper, carbon cloth with pre-loaded MnO nanoparticles (the composite is denoted as MnO/CC) is synthesized by hydrothermal reaction and sintering. A flake-like Mn-MOF derivative is grown on MnO/CC (the composite is denoted as MOF derivative/MnO/CC) by subsequent solvothermal reaction and sintering. The gap between MnO nanoparticles on the surface of carbon fibers provides space for the growth of Mn-MOF, and the MnO nanoparticles fix the grown Mn-MOF, which achieves the loading of Mn-MOF and its derivative on carbon cloth. As a self-supporting anode for lithium-ion batteries, MOF derivative/MnO/CC delivers a capacity of 1292 mAh g −1 , which is much higher than that of MnO/CC. The Mn-MOF derivative further increases the conductivity of the MnO nanoparticles on the surface of carbon fibers, and the MOF derivative with excellent electrochemical performance is applied to the self-supporting anode. These factors lead to the better electrochemical performance of MOF derivative/MnO/CC.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers (CFs) have been widely applied as electrodes for energy storage devices owing to the features of increased contact area between electrodes and electrolyte, and shortened transmission route of electrons. However, the poor electrochemical activity and severe waste of space hinder their further application as supercapacitors electrodes. In this work, MnO2-x nanoflowers restricted and epitaxial growth in/out carbon nanofibers (MnO2/MnO@CF) were prepared as excellent electrode materials for supercapacitors. With the synergistic effect of uniquely designed structure and the introduction of MnO and MnO2 nanoflowers, the prepared interconnected MnO2/MnO@CF electrodes demonstrated satisfactory electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the MnO2/MnO@CF//activated carbon (AC) asymmetric supercapacitor offered an outstanding long-term cycle stability. Besides, kinetic analysis of MnO2/MnO@CF-90 was conducted and the diffusion-dominated storage mechanism was well-revealed. This concept of "internal and external simultaneous decoration" with different valence states of manganese oxides was proven to improve the electrochemical performance of carbon nanofibers, which could be generalized to the preparation and performance improvement of other fiber-based electrodes.
Interfacial Synthesis of Porous Mno2 and Its Application in Electrochemical Capacitor

Abstract:In this paper, the porous manganese dioxide (MnO2) was prepared by an interfacial reaction of potassium permanganate in water/ferrocene in chloroform. The surface area and pore distribution of MnO2 can be controlled by simply adjusting the reaction time and the content of surfactant in the aqueous phase. The electrochemical performance of the prepared MnO2 was evaluated as an electrode material for supercapacitors by the means of cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge tests. Electrochemical tests results indicated that the pore size plays an important role at high charge–discharge rate, the sample with a large pore size shows a better rate capability, while the sample with a small pore size but large surface area delivers a large capacitance at low current rate.

Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO x ) has been coated on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and fabricated as the electrodes for electrochemical capacitors (ECs) by cathodic electrodeposition. In the process, randomly oriented CNT arrays are grown directly onto the Ti/Si substrates by chemical vapor deposition method. Potentiostatic method has been utilized for cathodic electrodeposition of MnO x onto the surface of CNTs while immersed in KMnO 4 solution. The highly porosity and fibrous microstructure of the as-prepared MnO x /CNT electrode is beneficial for the electrolyte access to the active material, whereas CNTs provide improved electronic conductivity. Electrochemical investigations show that the increase in the loading mass of MnO x results in a significant reduction in the specific capacitances (SCs) of the MnO x /CNT electrodes. The MnO x /CNT electrode with MnO x loading mass of 50 μg shows a high SC of 400 F g −1 with good long cycle stability at a current density of 10 A g −1 , suggesting its potential application in ECs.

Abstract:A hierarchical porous MnO 2 -based electrode was prepared and its electrochemical performance for electrochemical capacitors was investigated. In this work, porous MnO 2 film with pore size of 2–3 nm in diameter was deposited on a three-dimensional porous current collector by cathodic electrodeposition associated with subsequent controlled heat treatment at 200°C for 2 h. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the heat treatment has a great effect on the formation of the porous structure of MnO 2 layer, and the disordered porous structure was caused by dehydration during the heat treatment. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge tests showed that both energy and power densities are enhanced due to the unique hierarchical porous structure. The electrode delivers a high specific capacitance of 385 F g −1 at a high current density of 5 A g −1 within a potential window of −0.05 ∼ 0.85 V, and also exhibits excellent rate capability and electrochemical stability.

Abstract:Self-assembled well-ordered whisker-like manganese dioxide (MnO2) arrays on carbon fiber paper (MOWAs) were synthesized via a simple in situ redox replacement reaction between potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and carbon fiber paper (CFP) without any other oxidant or reductant addition. The CFP serves as not only a sacrificial reductant and converts aqueous permanganate (MnO4-) to insoluble MnO2 in this reaction, but also a substrate material and guarantees MnO2 deposition on the surface. The electrochemical properties were examined by cyclic voltammograms (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a three-electrode cell. According to the CV results, the ordered MOWAs yield high-capacitance performance with specific capacitance up to 274.1 F g(-1) and excellent long cycle-life property with 95% of its specific capacitance kept after 5000 cycles at the current density of 0.1 A g(-1). The high-performance hybrid composites result from a synergistic effect of large surface area and high degree of ordering of the ultrathin layer of MnO2 nanowhisker arrays, combined with the flexible CFP substrate and can offer great promise in large-scale energy storage device applications.
In Situ Growth of MnO2 Nanosheets on a Graphite Flake as an Effective Binder-Free Electrode for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:In this work, manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanosheets in situ loaded on a high-purity graphite flake (GF) were prepared by one-step hydrothermal deposition. It was found that the specific capacitance value of a single MnO2/GF electrode was 882 F/g at a current density of 1.0 A/g in a KOH electrolyte, and the specific capacitance retention of the MnO2/GF electrode can reach about 90.1% after 5000 charge-discharge cycles at a current density of 10 A/g. Furthermore, a MnO2/GF∥MnO2/GF symmetric supercapacitor device was fabricated with two pieces of MnO2/GF electrodes and ordinary filter paper with a 1 M KOH/PVA gel electrolyte as a separator. The single symmetric device displayed a high energy density of 64.2 Wh/kg at a power density of 400 W/kg within an applied voltage of 1.6 V, and this value was superior to those of previously reported MnO2-based systems. A tandem device consisting of a five-series tandem device (the applied voltage of a single device was 0.7 V) and a three-series tandem device (the applied voltage of a single device was 1.6 V) was prepared to drive a red light-emitting diode (LED). These findings open up application prospects for MnO2-based composite electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their porosity and well-defined structures are considered to be very promising electrode materials for the construction of high-performance supercapacitor (SC). In this paper, manganese-based metal-organic framework (Mn-MOF) were prepared on the surface of carbon cloth (CC) by a facile hydrothermal method. The morphology and structure of the electrode material were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Its electrochemical studies show that the Mn-MOF electrode materials exhibit lower charge transfer resistance, the excellent specific capacitance of 433.5 mF/cm2 in 1.0 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution at the current density of 0.8 mA/cm2. It is noteworthy that the flexible electrode have excellent cycle stability and 105% capacitance retention even after 5000 cycles at a current density of 5 mA/cm2. The excellent electrochemical performance of Mn-MOF/CC flexible electrode materials can be attributed to its three-dimensional porous structure.

Abstract:Arrays of manganese dioxide (MnO2), a pseudocapacitive material, have been deposited on the carbon fibers (CF) of a carbon woven fabric by electrodeposition from a solution containing manganese sulfate and sulfuric acid using galvanostatic square waves. The thickness of the MnO2 was varied by increasing/decreasing the time of deposition, and the electrochemical performance of the MnO2 has been analyzed. The CF serves as a substrate material with high surface area, good electrical conductivity and excellent mechanical strength. The electrochemical properties of the resultant electrode were examined by cyclic voltammogram (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a three-electrode system. From the specific capacitance calculations obtained from CV and charge-discharge, a high specific capacitance of 769 F g-1 @ 5 mV s-1 (low weight electrode) has been achieved. The maximum area capacitance, estimated from the charge-discharge curves, was 790 mF cm-2 @ 5 mV s-1. The high-performance is attributed to the double layer capacitance of the CFs combined with the pseudocapacitive nature of MnO2, the large surface area, and high degree of ordering of the ultrathin MnO2.
