Abstract:Silver phosphate (Ag3PO4, APO) has attracted intense attention as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst, but its large-scale application is limited by severe charge recombination and inevitable photo-corrosion. Various rational APO-based heterostructures composed of APO nanoparticles (NPs) and band-matched semiconductor support are designed to address the above issues. Nevertheless, the size, density, stability, and dispersion of APO NPs are critical challenges for the photocatalytic performance of APO-based photocatalysts. Here, three-dimensional (3D) self-assembled TiO2 hierarchical spheres (THS) prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method are employed as innovative support, and ultrafine high-density APO NPs with an average size of about 3 nm are successfully deposited and uniformly dispersed throughout THS to form hierarchical THS/APO composites. The novel THS/APO microstructure provides abundant reactive sites for photocatalytic reactions and promotes the photogenerated charge separation and transfer due to the ultrafine size of APO NPs and the TiO2/APO Type-II heterojunction. As a result, the THS/APO composites show significant improvement in photocatalytic activity and stability in methylene blue (MB) degradation. The reaction constant of THS/APO composites far exceeds that of either THS or APO, roughly 16 and 7 times higher than that of THS and APO under full-spectrum light, and 41 and 4 times higher under visible light. Our results strongly suggest new insights into the low-cost, large-scale application of high-efficiency APO-based photocatalyst.
Ag NPs Modified Plasmonic Z-scheme Photocatalyst Bi4Ti3O12/Ag/Ag3PO4 with Improved Performance for Pollutants Removal under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:In a typical Z-scheme photocatalytic system, the visible light responsive component typically plays a crucial role and is often confined to materials sensitive to visible light. In addition, metallic nanodots or quantum dots are used as effective cocatalysts in the construction of plasmonic Z-scheme photocatalysts because of their strong light harvesting capacities under visible light illumination. In the present study, Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets dominated with (001) crystal planes were successfully prepared via a facile molten-salt method, and BTO/Ag/APO composite samples were prepared by a simple precipitation method followed by photoreduction. The obtained BTO/Ag/APO composite exhibits improved photocatalytic activity for the decontamination of two typical organic pollutants, compared to bare Bi4Ti3O12 and Ag3PO4. Based on various characterization techniques, a Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism induced by the plasmonic effect was hypothesized to clarify the enhanced catalytic performances in this system. On the other hand, the LSPR effect of deposited silver nanoparticles can boost the molecular oxygen activation process and generate more superoxide radicals. This study provides a promising approach to apply highly effective photocatalytic degradation for environmental remediation.
Synthesis and characterization of Ag3PO4 immobilized in bentonite for the sunlight-driven degradation of Orange II

Abstract:A novel method for intercalating silver salt into bentonite interlayers is described. The very fine Ag3PO4 crystalline grains (less than 0.45nm) were obtained in the interlayers of bentonite (Ag3PO4-Ben). Ag3PO4-Ben was characterized by XRD, FTIR, XRF, XPS and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Ag3PO4-Ben particles exhibited high catalytic efficiency for Orange II degradation under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity is attributed to the small-sized Ag3PO4 crystal immobilized in bentonite and the strong adsorption of dye on bentonite. The special structure of bentonite and the microenvironment around the catalysis enhanced the stability.
Synthesis and Characterization of Ag 3 PO 4 /multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Composite Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity and Stability under Visible Light

Abstract:A novel Ag3PO4/multiwalled carbon nanotube (Ag3PO4/MWCNT) composite has been prepared by a simple precipitant approach. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance, and Raman spectroscopy. It is found that the MWCNTs are well deposited on Ag3PO4 nanoparticles. The Ag3PO4/MWCNT composite with MWCNT content of 1.4 wt% exhibits optimal photocatalytic activity under visible light. The rate constant of MO degradation over Ag3PO4/1.4 wt% MWCNT is 5.84 times that of pure Ag3PO4. Compared with pure Ag3PO4, the incorporation of MWCNTs not only significantly enhances the photocatalytic activity but also improves the structural stability of Ag3PO4, suggesting that the synergistic effects take place in the composite. The improvement is attributed to the conductive structure supported by MWCNTs, which favors electron–hole separation and the removal of photogenerated electrons from the decorated Ag3PO4. A possible photocatalytic mechanism of the Ag3PO4/MWCNT photocatalyst was assumed as well.
Synthesis of Ag3PO4/Ag/g-C3N4 Composite for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange

Abstract:In this study, we have successfully constructed Ag3PO4/Ag/g-C3N4 heterojunctions via the hydrothermal method, which displays a wide photo-absorption range. The higher photocurrent intensity of Ag3PO4/Ag/g-C3N4 indicates that the separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs is higher than that of both Ag3PO4 and Ag/g-C3N4 pure substances. It is confirmed that the efficient separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs is attributed to the heterojunction of the material. Under visible light irradiation, Ag3PO4/Ag/g-C3N4-1.6 can remove MO (~90%) at a higher rate than Ag3PO4 or Ag/g-C3N4. Its degradation rate is 0.04126 min−1, which is 4.23 and 6.53 times that of Ag/g-C3N4 and Ag3PO4, respectively. After five cycles of testing, the Ag3PO4/Ag/g-C3N4 photocatalyst still maintained high photocatalytic activity. The excellent photocatalysis of Ag3PO4/Ag/g-C3N4-1.6 under ultraviolet-visible light is due to the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers brought about by the construction of the Ag3PO4/Ag/g-C3N4 heterostructure. Additionally, Ag3PO4/Ag/g-C3N4 specimens can be easily recycled with high stability. The effects of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals on the degradation process of organic compounds were studied using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and radical quenching experiments. Therefore, the Ag3PO4/Ag/g-C3N4 composite can be used as an efficient and recyclable UV-vis spectrum-driven photocatalyst for the purification of organic pollutants.

Abstract:The graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with outstanding electron conductivity and good optical properties modified Ag3PO4 composites were prepared by a simple two-step method. Compared to pure Ag3PO4, the GQDs/Ag3PO4 composites exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activities for degradation Rhodamine B (RhB) and 4-Chlorophenol (4-CP) under the visible-light irradiation. More interestingly, the stabilities of Ag3PO4 were also been improved after introducing GQDs. The possible reaction mechanism was proposed by discussing comprehensive characterizations, which indicated that the GQDs can work as electron acceptors to enhance separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The structure-activity relationships have been studied in detail. The active species was determined and photocatalytic mechanism was proposed.
Construction of Z-scheme Ag3PO4/Bi2WO6 Composite with Excellent Visible-Light Photodegradation Activity for Removal of Organic Contaminants

Abstract:Ag3PO4 has good potential for use in photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants. However, the activity and stability of Ag3PO4 is hard to sustain because of photocorrosion and the positive potential of the conduction band of Ag3PO4. In this study, A composite consisting of Bi2WO6 nanosheets and Ag3PO4 was developed to curb recombination of charge carriers and enhance the activity and stability of the catalyst. Formation of a Ag3PO4/Bi2WO6 composite was confirmed using X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectroscopy provided convincing evidence that compositing Bi2WO6 with Ag3PO4 effectively reduced photocorrosion of Ag3PO4. The Ag3PO4/Bi2WO6 composite gave a high photocatalytic performance in photodegradation of methylene blue. A degradation rate of 0.61 min−1 was achieved; this is 1.3 and 6.0 times higher than those achieved using Ag3PO4 (0.47 min−1) and Bi2WO6 (0.10 min−1), respectively. Reactive species trapping experiments using the Ag3PO4/Bi2WO6 composite showed that holes, ·OH, and ·O2− all played specific roles in the photodegradation process. The photocatalytic mechanism was investigated and a Z-scheme was proposed as a plausible mechanism.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis technology has shown great potential in the field of organic pollutant removal, as it can use clean and pollution-free solar energy as driving force. The discovery of silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) is a major breakthrough in the field of visible light responsive semiconductor photocatalysis due to its robust capacity to absorb visible light < 520 nm. Furthermore, the holes produced in Ag3PO4 under light excitation possess a strong oxidation ability. However, the strong oxidation activity of Ag3PO4 is only achieved in the presence of electron sacrifice agents. Otherwise, photocorrosion would greatly reduce the reuse efficiency of Ag3PO4. This review thus focuses on the structural characteristics and preparation methods of Ag3PO4. Particularly, the recent advances in noble metal deposition, ion doping, and semiconductor coupling, as well as methods of magnetic composite modification for the improvement of catalytic activity and recycling efficiency of Ag3PO4-based catalysts, were also discussed, and all of these measures could enhance the catalytic performance of Ag3PO4 toward organic pollutants degradation. Additionally, some potential modification methods for Ag3PO4 were also proposed. This review thus provides insights into the advantages and disadvantages of the application of Ag3PO4 in the field of photocatalysis, clarifies the photocorrosion essence of Ag3PO4, and reveals the means to improve photocatalytic activity and stability of Ag3PO4. Furthermore, it provides a theoretical and methodological basis for studying Ag3PO4-based photocatalyst and also compiles valuable information regarding the photocatalytic treatment of organic polluted wastewater.

Abstract:A silver phosphate (Ag3PO4)/silver (Ag)/silver halide (AgX, X = Cl, Br, or I) ternary composite photocatalysts were prepared by loading Ag nanoparticles on Ag3PO4 tetrapods followed with in situ halogenation. The interface charge transfer behavior in the Ag3PO4/Ag/AgX nanocomposite was studied, and the photocatalytic performance was also evaluated. The results show that the Ag3PO4/Ag/AgI photocatalyst exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than the other two photocatalysts due to the more matched band structure between AgI and Ag3PO4. An internal electric field (IEF) from Ag3PO4 to AgI is formed at the heterogeneous interface, so the photogenerated electrons at the conduction band of AgI can rapidly transfer to the valence band of Ag3PO4 and recombine with photogenerated holes, which is consistent with the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. Meanwhile, the photogenerated electrons left at the conduction band of Ag3PO4 can transfer to Ag nanoparticles due to the Schottky junction and react with oxygen to produce O-center dot(2)-, which is proved to be the main active species in the photocatalytic procedure. This tandem junction modulated between the S-scheme heterojunction and Schottky junction promotes the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers, thus significantly increasing the average PL lifetime of electrons by 2.95 times. Therefore, the Ag3PO4/Ag/AgI photocatalyst exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue and norfloxacin. The seven consecutive cyclic tests prove the good stability of the photocatalyst, thus showing the application potential in the field of sewage treatment.

Abstract:A feasible modification strategy is proposed to enhance interfacial charge transfer in semiconductor microcrystals exposed to high-reactive facets for photocatalytic application. The Ag3PO4 tetrapods exposed with highly reactive {110} facets were synthesized, and then nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) were anchored on the surface of the Ag3PO4 tetrapods, constructing the nano-sized S-scheme NCQDs/Ag3PO4 heterojunction to further promote the interfacial charge transfer. Such S-scheme charge transfer behavior not only increased the efficient spatial separation of photo-generated carriers but also retained the strong-reductive electrons in the conduction band of NCQDs, which could fully harness O-2(-) to photo-catalytically degrade pollutants. Furthermore, the modification of NCQDs improved the light-harvesting ability of the composite due to the up-conversion fluorescence characteristic of NCQDs. Therefore, NCQDs/Ag3PO4 composite photocatalyst displayed outstanding photocatalytic performance for the degradation of methylene blue, which was about 3.4 times higher than that of pure Ag3PO4, and also exhibited higher stability.
Construction of ZnCo2O4/Ag3PO4 composite photocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic performance

Abstract:In this study, ZnCo2O4 was prepared by a microwave‐assisted process, and then ZnCo2O4 was loaded onto Ag3PO4 by in‐situ chemical precipitation method to obtain a composite photocatalyst. The catalytic activity and cycle stability were evaluated under visible light, and the catalytic reaction mechanism was proposed. In this study, ZnCo2O4/Ag3PO4 composite catalyst was prepared by the precipitation method, and their performance in the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) was studied. The catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, selected area electron diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV‐Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results indicate that the 0.1 ZnCo2O4/Ag3PO4 composite system has good photocatalytic activity in the degradation of methyl orange. Under simulated sunlight conditions, the degradation rate can reach 94% after 30 min. The maximum reaction rate constant of 0.1 ZnCo2O4/Ag3PO4 was 0.05301 min−1, which is 3 times and 52 times the rate constant of pure Ag3PO4 and pure ZnCo2O4, respectively. In catalyst recycling experiments, 0.1 ZnCo2O4/Ag3PO4 still degraded methyl orange at a rate of 84.4% after three cycles. Trapping experiments showed that holes and superoxide radicals mostly contributed to the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange by the catalyst, while hydroxyl radicals played a partial role. The energy level structure of ZnCo2O4/Ag3PO4 is conducive to the effective separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, improving the lifespan of photogenerated charges. In the investigated catalyst series, 0.1 ZnCo2O4/Ag3PO4 demonstrated the best photocatalytic performance.

Facile synthesis of Ag3PO4 modified with GQDs composites with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity

Abstract:In this work, the Ag3PO4 modified with graphene quantum dots composites (GQDs–Ag3PO4) were synthesized via a facile precipitation method to further improve the photocatalytic performance of Ag3PO4. Interestingly, these GQDs–Ag3PO4 exhibited improved visible light photocatalytic performance for the degradation of rhodamine B than pure Ag3PO4. The composite with GQDs weight percentage of 0.48 showed the most excellent performance, which was completely almost 11.25 times than that of pure Ag3PO4. Furthermore, this composite also showed excellent photocatalytic performance for the photodegradation of para-chlorophenol, levofloxacin and negatively charged aromatic dye methyl orange. The remarkable enhancement of photocatalytic performance should be attributed to the larger surface area, the enhanced light absorption property and the effective suppression of electron–hole recombination.

Abstract:The method of decorating Ag3PO4 nanoparticles with carbon nitride material (g-C3N4) is demonstrated as an efficient pathway to remarkably improve the stability and photocatalytic performance of Ag3PO4 nanoparticles which have been widely used in photocatalysis, but limited by the instability. The improved material herein results in the largely enhanced photocatalytic performance for water purification under visible light irradiation, which was nearly 7 times as high as that of pure Ag3PO4. Meanwhile, the as obtained materials show the unique stable property, mainly contributed by the protection effect of decorated g-C3N4 sheet. Additionally, the radical trapping experiments revealed that the introduction of g-C3N4 transformed the photocatalytic mechanism to some degree, where O-center dot(2)- played a more important role. The tremendous enhancement in catalytic performance may be attributed to the larger surface area, controllable particle size and the synergistic effect between Ag3PO4 and g-C3N4, promoting the separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Abstract:In our work, using industrial waste red mud (RM) as a host material to grow silver phosphate (Ag3PO4), a low-cost and new heterogeneous Ag3PO4/RM (APRM) composite was successfully prepared through a facile in-situ deposition method. The characterization results demonstrated Ag3PO4 nanoparticles uniformly deposited on RM to form P-O-Fe bonds, and a semiconductor heterostructure was constructed between the two nanocrystalline components of Ag3PO4 and Fe2O3. The optimal composite of APRM-110 exhibited a remarkable photocatalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) in photo-Fenton reaction. The enhanced photocatalytic performance and stability could be attributed to the S-scheme charge transfer in APRM-110, which accelerated the photo-generated carrier separation and then effectively restrained the photocorrosion of APRM-110. The APRM-110 composite held good reusability, stability and excellent settleability. The main intermediates were identified and the degradation pathway of TC-HCl in photo-Fenton reaction catalyzed by APRM-110 was proposed. The aquatic toxicity of TC-HCl solution could be effectively weakened by the photo-Fenton catalyzed by APRM-110. This work has designed a cost-efficiency and stable RM-based Ag3PO4 composite, and as a highly effective catalyst for TC-HCl degradation in photo-Fenton reaction.

Abstract:Silver orthophosphate-graphene nanosheets composite (Ag3PO4-GNs) has been fabricated using a facile hydrothermal method. The Ag3PO4-GNs were characterized using XRD, UV–vis DRS and SEM. The photocatalytic activity of Ag3PO4-GNs was evaluated by photocatalytic decolorization of dye aqueous solutions under simulated solar light irradiation. It was observed that Ag3PO4 nanoparticles in Ag3PO4-GNs were attached on the surface of graphene nanosheets.The introduction of graphene nanosheets enhanced remarkably the visible light absorption region of Ag3PO4-GNs compared with bare Ag3PO4. The photocatalytic activity of Ag3PO4-GNs is nearly twice as high as that of the pure Ag3PO4. The removal efficiency can reach more than 90 % by Ag3PO4-GNs under simulated solar light irradiation within 25 min, which might mainly be attributed to high adsorption capacity, extended light absorption range and efficient charge separation. After irradiation for 60 min, 84.70 % TOC mineralization was achieved by Ag3PO4-GNs. Based on the results of detection of active species, the direct oxidization of dye pollutants in aqueous solution by holes takes a major role in the whole decolorization process by Ag3PO4-GNs. As a result, Ag3PO4-GNs with the high photocatalytic activity are proven to be an excellent light photocatalyst for potentially scalable removal of dyes in aqueous solutions and other environmental remediation under simulated solar light irradiation.

Abstract:Ag3PO4@g-C3N4 core@shell composites were prepared via an ultrasonication/chemisorption method. The degradation of methylene blue (MB) over Ag3PO4@g-C3N4 composites was investigated to evaluate their photocatalytic performance. The Ag3PO4@g-C3N4 sample presented the best photocatalytic activity, degrading 97% MB after irradiation for 30 min. Superior stability was also observed in the cyclic runs. The composite has excellent photocatalytic activity and photo-stability and the optimal content of g-C3N4 in the composites is 7.0 wt.%. The efficient photo-generated charge separation originated from a strong interaction in the intimately contact interface, which was confirmed by the results of photocurrent and EIS measurements. Based on the experimental results, a photocatalytic mechanism for organics degradation over Ag3PO4@g-C3N4 photocatalysts was proposed. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Ag-loaded ZnO nanocomposite film photocatalysts were constructed by physical vapor deposition and thermal oxidation. The relationship between the surface morphology, optical properties, photoelectric properties, and photocatalytic activity of nanocomposite films were mainly investigated. The surface morphology of nanocomposite films exhibits a thickness dependence of the Zn layer, which can be acknowledged by the SEM image. Furthermore, under the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag particles, the nanocomposite films not only demonstrate a sensitivity to visible light but accelerate the photoelectron transfer efficiency at the interface between Ag particles and ZnO films. Photocatalytic experiments demonstrate that the photocatalytic activity of nanocomposite films is significantly enhanced in the photodegradation experiment of methyl orange (MO) or methylene blue (MB) pigments in comparison with pure ZnO films. It is relevant to note that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) contribute notably in photocatalytic degradation. The present work proposes a simple approach to preparing an efficient and recyclable nanoscale photocatalyst for the visible-light-induced purification to pigments in wastewater.

Abstract:Novel AgCl/Ag3 PO4 photocatalysts were synthesized by a simple precipitation method, in which AgCl was coated onto Ag3 PO4 particles, as uncovered by X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectrometry. Different from previous research on photocatalytic degradation, we studied the performance of methyl orange photodegradation on a small continuous flow reactor. The highest degradation activity of 97% was achieved by the 2 wt.% AgCl/Ag3 PO4 after 8 min of visible light irradiation, while pure Ag3 PO4 degraded only 71% methyl orange under same conditions. The degradation rate constant of the 2 wt.% AgCl/Ag3 PO4 was 1.36 times higher than that of pure Ag3 PO4 . The AgCl/Ag3 PO4 maintained high photocatalytic activity after five cycles, without any significant decrease.
