Abstract:Micro-algal treatment technologies are an efficient and effective method for simultaneous biogas slurry nutrient removal and biogas upgrade. Three treatment technologies were investigated, utilizing different selected strains (mono-cultivation of microalgae, co-cultivation of microalgae with fungi, and co-cultivation of microalgae with activated sludge). Strains were cultivated by using biogas slurry as a nutrient medium in a photo-bio-reactor at various mixed LED treatments. A red: blue LED ratio of 7:3 and 5:5 was considered optimum for co-cultivation of microalgae with either fungi or activated sludge, to support COD and TP removal, with 65.57%-74.29% and 70.83%-76.69% removed, respectively. The system with co-cultivated microalgae and activated sludge, demonstrated high N removal efficiency at a red: blue LED ratio of 5: 5. The most effective light mixture ratios for biogas upgrade were found to be red: blue = 7: 3 and 5: 5, with the highest performance in the co-cultivated microalgae with fungi system, while the optimum red: blue ratio for both biogas slurry nutrient removal and biogas upgrade was 5:5 for the co-cultivation of microalgae with fungi system. The optimal cultivation times for mono-cultivated microalgae, co-cultivated microalgae with fungi and co-cultivated microalgae with activated sludge, were 7 d, 9 d and 8 d, respectively. These results show the high potential for combined strain systems in nutrient removal and biogas upgrading, with algal-fungal symbiotic systems showing significant promise. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The three microalgal strains were cultivated, namely, Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus obliquus, and Neochloris oleoabundans, by applying mixed light-emitting diode wavelength treatments to biogas slurry in a photobioreactor bag. This study aims to compare the growth and nutrient removal efficiency of the algae and determine their roles for biogas upgrading. At red:blue=5:5, S. obliquus and C. vulgaris efficiently removed COD and TP, respectively. S. obliquus demonstrated high N removal efficiency at red:blue=7:3. The same strain significantly improved removal capacity for all nutrients compared with C. vulgaris and N. oleoabundans, particularly at red:blue=5:5, 7:3, and 3:7. For biogas upgrade, CH4 contents were higher than 75% (v/v) for all strains. The algae exhibited particularly good CH4 enrichment at red:blue=7:3, 5:5. Results show that microalgal biomass production offers real opportunities for addressing issues, such as nutrient reduction, CO2 removal, and biogas enrichment.
Influence of Influent Methane Concentration on Biogas Upgrading and Biogas Slurry Purification under Various LED (Light-Emitting Diode) Light Wavelengths Using Chlorella Sp.

Abstract:` Raw biogas is a valuable renewable energy but usually requires upgrading. The mixed LED (light-emitting diode) light wavelengths achieved much better microalgae growth than that of the monochromatic. The best LED light wavelength mix ratio for both biogas upgrading and biogas slurry nutrient removal was the red:blue ratio of 5:5. Lower influent CH4 (methane) concentration achieved higher biogas slurry nutrient removal efficiency, whereas moderate influent CH4 concentration achieved the best biogas upgrading effect. Therefore the optimal parameters were determined to lie between the low and moderate influent CH4 concentrations and the mixed red:blue ratio of 5:5 LED light wavelengths. They achieved the best biogas upgrading and biogas slurry nutrient purification effects with the following values: 92.60 +/- 2.24% (v/v) of upgraded biogas CH4 concentration, 85.73 +/- 4.26% of chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency, 73.21 +/- 2.51% of total nitrogen removal efficiency, and 73.89 +/- 4.82% total phosphorus removal efficiency. Abstract:Biogas is a promising renewable energy which has to be upgraded to meet the efficient combustion standard. The microalgae biogas upgrading system used in this study could effectively upgrade biogas and simultaneously reduce biogas slurry nutrient. Red light was the optimum light wavelength for microalgae growth, biogas upgrading, and biogas slurry nutrient reduction. Only moderate light intensities (i.e., 400, 600, 800, and 1000 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) were suitable for microalgae growth. The optimal lighting strategy should be incremental light intensity strategy since it could avoid photoinhibition at the initial culture phase and insufficient light intensity at the latter culture phase. Under this lighting strategy, the microalgae dry weight was 446.98 +/- 25.32 mg l(-1); the methane concentration in the upgraded biogas was 92.87 +/- 4.10%; the chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus removal efficiency was 92.67 +/- 5.14%, 80.87 +/- 6.25%, and 79.33 +/- 6.18%, respectively. Abstract:Microalgae-based technologies were studied for nutrient removal in biogas slurry and biogas upgrading in the photobioreactors constitute, which were cost-effective, environment-friendly alternatives to conventional physical-chemical methods. The effects of CO2 concentration on nutrient removal and biogas upgrade using Chlorella vulgaris monocultivation, Ganoderma lucidum-Chlorella vulgaris cocultivation and activated sludge-Chlorella vulgaris cocultivation were investigated. Besides, the influences of three ratios of red to blue light wavelength on nutrient removal and biogas upgrading were also investigated. The results showed that optimum biogas slurry nutrient reduction could be achieved by Ganoderma lucidum-Chlorella vulgaris cocultivation using the pelletization method. The optimal ratio of red to blue light wavelength for nutrient removal and biogas upgrading was 5:5, resulting to maximal mean removal efficiencies of 86.08± 6.27%, 85.69± 6.34%, 86.17± 6.13%, and 79.11 ± 5.97% for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and CO2, respectively. The results will provide a reference for simultaneously purifying wastewater and upgrading biogas using microalgae-based technology.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion not only produces raw biogas which needs to be upgraded, but also nutrient-rich waste stream biogas slurry which needs decontamination. Therefore, this research focused on the effects of various light wavelengths, light intensities, and photoperiods on biogas upgrading and simultaneously biogas slurry decontamination by using of microalgae photobioreactor. The microalgae photobioreactor was a transparent polyethylene bag (80 cm x 60 cm x 11 cm). The results demonstrated that biogas upgrading and simultaneously biogas slurry decontamination was successfully achieved by the use of the photosynthetic CO2 uptake by microalgae photobioreactor. The optimal light wavelength was the mixed LED red:blue = 5:5; whereas the optimized lighting control strategy was: low light intensity (300 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) with long photoperiod (16 h light:8 h dark) for the time course of 0-48 h, moderate light intensity (600 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) with middle photoperiod (14 h light:10 h dark) for the time course of 48-96 h, and high light intensity (900 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) with short photoperiod (12 h light:12 h dark) for the time course of 96-144 h. Its biogas CO2 removal efficiency was 85.46 +/- 6.25%. Its removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus were 85.23 +/- 8.32%, 87.10 +/- 7.55%, and 92.40 +/- 3.05%, respectively. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:BACKGROUND: Anaerobic fermentation slurry (AFS) is a type of high-pollution load wastewater that can cause water eutrophication and algal blooms. The current study focused on the response of microalgae nutrient removal efficiency to various light-emitting diode light wavelengths and intensities.RESULTS: Themicroalgae Chlorella vulgaris was able to remove nutrients from AFS effectively. Furthermore, only moderate light intensities (800, 1300, 1800, and 2300 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) were required to culture C. vulgaris and induce nutrient removal. Exposure to higher light intensities produced greater dry weight (DW) biomass and achieved higher nutrient removal efficiencies. The order of light wavelengths based on the DW biomass yield of C. vulgaris was red > white > yellow > blue. The order of light wavelengths, according to the nutrient removal efficiencies reached by C. vulgaris, was red > white > yellow > blue. Red light was also the light wavelength with the best economic efficiency for nutrient removal.CONCLUSION: In this study, red light was used as the optimum light wavelength. Furthermore, the optimum light intensity range was from 1300 to 1800 mu mol m(-2) s(-1) when both nutrient removal and economic efficiencies were considered. Abstract:Chlorella pyrenoidosa, a type of lipid-rich green algae, features broad prospects for application in such fields as healthy foods, biodiesel and so on. The light-utilizing efficiency of the cells is a critical factor that influences the biomass and lipid contents of photoautotrophic microalgae. Inconsistent illumination wavelengths hinder microalgal growth. The patterns about the impacts of mixed light emitting diode (LED) wavelengths or two-phase culture over the growth and lipid accumulation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa were reported. Among the different LED wavelengths (white, purple, blue, green, yellow and red) at the light intensity of 200 μmol/m2·s tested, red and green gave maximum biomass and lipid contents, respectively. Based on the discovery, two-phase (red was illuminated for 12 d in the first phase, and then shifted to green light for 8 d in the second phase, R→G) or mixed LED (R:G=3:7 or R:G=7:3) culture protocol was adopted for the high lipid-accumulation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. The results indicated that the lipid contents of Chlorella pyrenoidosa treated with two-phase (R→G) or mixed LED culture was significantly higher than that of white light with the same intensity (p<0.05), and the highest lipid-accumulation rate was 26.37 mg/L·d in the two-phase culture. Fatty acid (FA) analysis showed that 13 types FAs were detected and unsaturated FAs were over 50% (w/w). 26.8%-27.7% (w/w) palmitic acid (C16:0) was the major saturated FA, while the largest proportions of monounsaturated FA and polyunsaturated FA were oleic acid (C18:1) and linoleic acid (C18:2), respectively. Additionally, although no difference in the FA composition of Chlorella pyrenoidosa treated with different protocols was found, the absolute content did differ significantly, coinciding with that of the total lipids. Furthermore, the ratio of unsaturated FAs in Chlorella pyrenoidosa was significantly increased under the mixed LED (R:G=7:3) (p<0.05). Effect of Light Intensity on the Capability of Different Microalgae Species for Simultaneous Biogas Upgrading and Biogas Slurry Nutrient Reduction

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the ability of microalgae to remove biogas slurry nutrients and upgrade biogas simultaneously under various light-emitting diode light intensities. Three green algae, namely, Scenedesmus obliquus, Chlorella sp., and Selenastrum bibraianum, were selected and cultivated in photobioreactor bags. The capacity of each microalga to reduce the chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (M) of wastes was investigated. The growth rate and CO2 uptake of each microalga were also examined. Compared with S. bibraianum, S. obliquus and Chlorella sp. showed better combined results and were more suitable for simultaneous biogas upgrading and biogas effluent nutrient reduction. Results showed that the best results for biogas slurry nutrient reduction, CO2 removal, and upgrade effects were obtained from the treatment under moderate light intensity (150-170 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) for S. obliquus. The highest reduction values of COD, TN, TI', dry weight, and CH4 concentration obtained were 93.08% +/- 4.62%, 84.12% +/- 437%, 86.76% +/- 4.58%, 465.31 +/- 19.44 mg L-1, and 94.41 +/- 3.16 (v/v), respectively. Simultaneous purification of anaerobic digestion slurry and enhancement in produced biogas using different microalgae-based technologies under a variety of mixed light wavelengths and photoperiods

Abstract:Microalgae-based technology has attracted increasing attention due to its high efficiency for simultaneous purification of anaerobic digestion slurry and the enhanced purity of biogas. For realizing high nutrients/CO 2 removal efficiencies, a Chlorella vulgaris − Ganoderma lucidum −endophytic bacteria symbiont was constructed in the current work. The symbiotic system displayed complementary effects and co-metabolism of Chlorella vulgaris and Ganoderma lucidum /endophytic bacteria, in which Ganoderma lucidum /endophytic bacteria could stimulate the growth of symbiont. Moreover, the compounds produced from the photosynthesis of microalgae were beneficial to the growth of Ganoderma lucidum and endophytic bacteria. The results suggested that the constructed Chlorella vulgaris − Ganoderma lucidum −endophytic bacteria symbiont displayed the best photosynthetic performance with the addition of 10 −9 M GR24 under a mixed wavelength ratio (red:blue) of 5:5 and a light/dark cycle of 14-h:10-h. Meanwhile, the highest nutrients/CO 2 removal efficiencies were obtained under the abovementioned optimal conditions, and had values of 84.09 ± 8.12%, 83.57 ± 8.12%, 85.19 ± 7.97% and 69.34 ± 6.62% for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and CO 2 , respectively. The work provides a theoretical foundation for future scale-up of wastewater treatment and enhancement of biogas upgrading, especially in terms of co-culture of microalgae with bacteria/fungi and light control strategies.

Abstract:The microalgae-based technology has been developed to reduce biogas slurry nutrients and upgrade biogas simultaneously. In this work, five microalgal strains named Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus obliquus, Selenastrum capricornutum, Nitzschia palea, and Anabaena spiroides under mono- and co-cultivation were used for biogas upgrading. Optimum biogas slurry nutrient reduction could be achieved by co-cultivating microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus obliquus, and Nitzschia palea) with fungi using the pelletization technology. In addition, the effects of different ratio of mixed LED light wavelengths applying mixed light-emitting diode during algae strains and fungi co-cultivation on CO2 and biogas slurry nutrient removal efficiency were also investigated. The results showed that the COD (chemical oxygen demand), TN (total nitrogen), and TP (total phosphorus) removal efficiency were 85.82 ± 5.37%, 83.31 ± 4.72%, and 84.26 ± 5.58%, respectively at red: blue = 5:5 under the co-cultivation of S. obliquus and fungi. In terms of biogas upgrading, CH4 contents were higher than 90% (v/v) for all strains, except the co-cultivation with S. obliquus and fungi at red: blue = 3:7. The results indicated that co-cultivation of microalgae with fungi under mixed light wavelengths treatments was most successful in nutrient removal from wastewater and biogas upgrading.
Effects of Various Led Light Qualities and Light Intensity Supply Strategies on Purification of Slurry from Anaerobic Digestion Process by Chlorella Vulgaris

Abstract:The slurry from anaerobic digestion process (biogas slurry) is now well known to potentially cause water eutrophication and even large-scale algal blooms. The Chlorella vulgaris utilized in this research is able to purify the biogas slurry effectively under optimum light quality and light intensity supply strategy. The descending order of dry cell weight for C vulgaris reproduction and nutrient removal efficiency of biogas slurry both are red > white > yellow > purple > blue > green, indicating that the red light is the optimum light quality. Furthermore, this study was among the first attempt to analyzed the economic efficiency for nutrient removal under various light intensity supply strategies, and found out that the optimal light intensity supply strategy used for microalgae culture should be incremental intensity strategy, rather than constant intensity strategy, to avoid light energy wastage and photoinhibition. The optimal light intensity supply strategy is: Phase 1,0-48 h with 800 pilot m(-2) s(-1); Phase 2,48-96 h with 1200 mu mol m(-2) s(-1); and Phase 3, 96-144 h with 1600 mu mol m(-2) s(-1). Abstract:The integration of microalgal cultivation in wastewater can fulfill the dual roles of pollutant degradation and biomass output. Meanwhile, the LED lights with different wavelengths have a great effect on the growth and metabolism of microalgae. In this study, Golenkinia SDEC-16, a strain isolated for biofuel production, was evaluated to verify its potentials for campus sewage treatment and lipid accumulation under the red, green, and blue lights. The results indicated that the treated campus sewage met the first grade level in the Chinese pollutant discharge standards for municipal wastewater treatment plants within seven days under both red and blue light. The green light failed to exhibit excellent performance in nutrient removal, but facilitated the lipid synthesis as high as 42.99 ± 3.48%. The increased lipid content was achieved along with low biomass accumulation owing to low effective light utilization, indicating that the green light could be merely used as a stimulus strategy. The red light benefited the photosynthesis of Golenkinia SDEC-16, with the maximal biomass concentration of 0.80 ± 0.03 g/L and lipid content of 36.90 ± 3.62%, which can attain the optimal balance between biomass production and lipid synthesis.

Abstract:利用人工小球藻-灵芝菌共生体在光生物反应器系统中，对预处理后的沼液进行了生物净化处理研究。考察了红色光质和蓝色光质的不同混合光质(红光:蓝光比为8:2；5:5和2:8)，在不同受理时间下的沼液净化效果。结果表明，藻菌共生体对主要污染物的去除效果受处理时间影响显著(P < 0.05)，实验启动1~4 d去除效果增加明显。同时，当红光:蓝光为5:5时，沼液中COD、TN和TP去除效果均为最佳，去除率分别达到80.42% ± 6.36%，75.63% ± 6.56%和78.83% ± 6.35%。 In this work, we selected the technologies involving the co-cultivation of Scenedesmus obliquus with Ganoderma lucidum cultured in photobioreactor to research the pretreated biogas slurry nutrient removal. The selected light qualities were mixed red light and blue light (red:blue = 8:2, 5:5, 2:8) under difference process time. The results show that the artificial algal-fungal symbiont has significantly higher nutrients removal efficiency (P < 0.05) by process time under its treatment, and in the initial time 1 - 4 d, the nutrients removal efficiency was increased dramatically. The red: blue = 5:5 achieved the highest COD (80.42% ± 6.36%), TN (75.63% ± 6.56%) and TP (78.83% ± 6.35%) removal efficiency by the artificial algal-fungal symbiont.

Abstract:In this study, the red LED with wavelength range of 625 ~ 627.5 nm and the blue LED with wavelength range of 464 ~ 467 nm are chosen as the light source in order to increase the lipid content of microalgae as well as to reduce the energy consumption. The highest lipid weight of Scenedesmus obliquus is achievedwith 5000lux light intensity, 12L:12D of photoperiod and blue continuous LED light which consuming 53.4 times less energy in term of the total lipid content per unit than that of tricolor energy-saving lamp. In addition, the highest biomass and lipid weight of Chlorella pyrenoidosa are achieved with 5000lux of light intensity, 8L:16D of photoperiod and red continuous LED light, which is 0.73 g/L and 0.552 g/L respectively. And it consumes 29.4 times less energy consumption for units of the total lipid content than that of tricolor energy-saving lamp. Furthermore, continuous LED light improves effect of municipal wastewater treatment as the better light source for Scenedesmus obliquus and Chlorella pyrenoidosa comparing with intermittent LED light.
Effects of Various LED Light Wavelengths and Intensities on the Performance of Purifying Synthetic Domestic Sewage by Microalgae at Different Influent C/N Ratios

Abstract:In Chinese rural areas, domestic sewage is one of the main sources of water pollution that may cause water eutrophication if directly discharged into natural waters without appropriate treatment. This study demonstrates that the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris can effectively remove nutrients from domestic sewage. In this process, red is the optimal light wavelength, with an intensity strategy as follows: Phase 1, 0–48h with 1000μmolm−2s−1; Phase 2, 48–96h with 1500μmolm−2s−1; Phase 3, 96–120h with 2000μmolm−2s−1; and Phase 4, 120–144h with 2500μmolm−2s−1. The optimal cultivation time was 144h. Nutrient removal efficiency was significantly affected by the light wavelength, light intensity, the effect of the interaction between light wavelength and intensity, as well as the effect of the interaction among light wavelength, light intensity, and influent C/N ratio. Moreover, the total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal efficiencies were significantly affected by the influent C/N ratio. In this study, the optimal influent C/N ratio is 5:1.

Abstract:Sanitary sewage can create serious environmental problems if discharged directly into natural waters without appropriate treatment. This study showed that red light is the optimum light wavelength for growing microalgae Chlorella vulgaris in microalgae biological wastewater treatment systems, given a harvest time of 144 h. Only moderate light intensities (1,000, 1,500, 2,000, and 2,500 μmol m −2 s −1 ) were able to remove nutrients from synthetic sanitary sewage, but higher light intensity led to better nutrient removal effects. Because of economic considerations, the optimum light intensity range for efficient nutrient removal was determined to be between 1,500 and 2,000 μmol m −2 s −1 . Furthermore, nutrient removal efficiency was significantly affected by light wavelength, light intensity, the interaction of these two factors, and the interaction among light wavelength, light intensity, and influent carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal efficiency was also significantly affected by influent C/N ratios. Appropriate control of carbon and nitrogen source concentrations enabled optimal nutrient removal. The optimal influent C/N ratio was determined to be 6:1.
Light-Emitting Diode Power Conversion Capability And Co2 Fixation Rate Of Microalgae Biofilm Cultured Under Different Light Spectra

Abstract:Microalgae biofilm-based culture has attracted much interest due to its high harvest efficiency and low energy requirements. Using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light source for microalgae culture has been considered as a promising choice to enhance the economic feasibility of microalgae-based commodities. In this work, the LED power conversion capability and CO2 fixation rate of microalgae biofilms (Chlorella ellipsoidea and Chlorella pyrenoidosa) cultured under different light spectra (white, blue, green and red) were studied. The results indicated that the power-to-biomass conversion capabilities of these two microalgae biofilms cultured under blue and white LEDs were much higher than those under green and red LEDs (C. ellipsoidea: 32%-33% higher, C. pyrenoidosa: 34%-46% higher), and their power-to-lipid conversion capabilities cultured under blue LEDs were 61%-66% higher than those under green LEDs. The CO2 fixation rates of these two biofilms cultured under blue LEDs were 13% and 31% higher, respectively, than those under green LEDs. The results of this study have important implications for selecting the optimal energy-efficient LEDs using in microalgae biofilm-based culture systems.

Abstract:Microalgae have been explored as potential host species for biofuel production.Environmental factors affect algal growth and cellular composition.The effects of several key environmental factors, such as temperature, light, and pH of the medium on the growth and biochemical composition of Scenedesmus obliquus were investigated in this study.The highest growth rate of microalgae was observed at an optimal temperature of 25℃, 150 µmol/(m 2 •s) light intensity, and pH 10.0.The biochemical composition analysis revealed that the carbohydrate content decreased at lower (20℃) or higher temperature (35℃), whereas the protein and lipid contents increase at these temperatures.The fluctuation of light intensity significantly affected the contents of protein, carbohydrate, and lipid.The protein levels varied greatly when the pH of the medium was below 7.0.The carbohydrate and lipid contents significantly increased at pH above 7.0.
