Abstract:Microalgae-based technology has attracted increasing attention due to its high efficiency for simultaneous purification of anaerobic digestion slurry and the enhanced purity of biogas. For realizing high nutrients/CO 2 removal efficiencies, a Chlorella vulgaris − Ganoderma lucidum −endophytic bacteria symbiont was constructed in the current work. The symbiotic system displayed complementary effects and co-metabolism of Chlorella vulgaris and Ganoderma lucidum /endophytic bacteria, in which Ganoderma lucidum /endophytic bacteria could stimulate the growth of symbiont. Moreover, the compounds produced from the photosynthesis of microalgae were beneficial to the growth of Ganoderma lucidum and endophytic bacteria. The results suggested that the constructed Chlorella vulgaris − Ganoderma lucidum −endophytic bacteria symbiont displayed the best photosynthetic performance with the addition of 10 −9 M GR24 under a mixed wavelength ratio (red:blue) of 5:5 and a light/dark cycle of 14-h:10-h. Meanwhile, the highest nutrients/CO 2 removal efficiencies were obtained under the abovementioned optimal conditions, and had values of 84.09 ± 8.12%, 83.57 ± 8.12%, 85.19 ± 7.97% and 69.34 ± 6.62% for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and CO 2 , respectively. The work provides a theoretical foundation for future scale-up of wastewater treatment and enhancement of biogas upgrading, especially in terms of co-culture of microalgae with bacteria/fungi and light control strategies.

Abstract:The microalgae-based technology has been developed to reduce biogas slurry nutrients and upgrade biogas simultaneously. In this work, five microalgal strains named Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus obliquus, Selenastrum capricornutum, Nitzschia palea, and Anabaena spiroides under mono- and co-cultivation were used for biogas upgrading. Optimum biogas slurry nutrient reduction could be achieved by co-cultivating microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus obliquus, and Nitzschia palea) with fungi using the pelletization technology. In addition, the effects of different ratio of mixed LED light wavelengths applying mixed light-emitting diode during algae strains and fungi co-cultivation on CO2 and biogas slurry nutrient removal efficiency were also investigated. The results showed that the COD (chemical oxygen demand), TN (total nitrogen), and TP (total phosphorus) removal efficiency were 85.82 ± 5.37%, 83.31 ± 4.72%, and 84.26 ± 5.58%, respectively at red: blue = 5:5 under the co-cultivation of S. obliquus and fungi. In terms of biogas upgrading, CH4 contents were higher than 90% (v/v) for all strains, except the co-cultivation with S. obliquus and fungi at red: blue = 3:7. The results indicated that co-cultivation of microalgae with fungi under mixed light wavelengths treatments was most successful in nutrient removal from wastewater and biogas upgrading.

Abstract:Microalgae-based technologies were studied for nutrient removal in biogas slurry and biogas upgrading in the photobioreactors constitute, which were cost-effective, environment-friendly alternatives to conventional physical-chemical methods. The effects of CO2 concentration on nutrient removal and biogas upgrade using Chlorella vulgaris monocultivation, Ganoderma lucidum-Chlorella vulgaris cocultivation and activated sludge-Chlorella vulgaris cocultivation were investigated. Besides, the influences of three ratios of red to blue light wavelength on nutrient removal and biogas upgrading were also investigated. The results showed that optimum biogas slurry nutrient reduction could be achieved by Ganoderma lucidum-Chlorella vulgaris cocultivation using the pelletization method. The optimal ratio of red to blue light wavelength for nutrient removal and biogas upgrading was 5:5, resulting to maximal mean removal efficiencies of 86.08± 6.27%, 85.69± 6.34%, 86.17± 6.13%, and 79.11 ± 5.97% for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and CO2, respectively. The results will provide a reference for simultaneously purifying wastewater and upgrading biogas using microalgae-based technology.

Abstract:This research focused on the feasibility of purifying biogas slurry and upgrading biogas simultaneously. The biogas slurry and CO2 in biogas was utilized as the culture medium and carbon source of Chlorella vulgaris, respectively. The optimum operating conditions were biogas slurry concentration of 50%, initial pH of 6.0, initial algal dry weight of 0.20 mg/mL, and light wavelength red. Then, the removal efficiency of COD, TN, TP and BOD5 achieved 88.5%, 91.2%, 95.3% and 87.6%, respectively. In particularly, the content of CH4 in biogas increased from 40% to 60.2%. These results indicated that the method of biogas slurry purifying and biogas upgrading by Chlorella vulgaris studied in this research was able to solve the problem of environment pollution of high load pollutants biogas slurry, as well as low quality of biogas.

Abstract:This work mainly aimed to compare the growth and tolerance of fungal–algal cultures in various dilutions of anaerobically digested swine wastewater (ASW) and to determine their nutrient removal efficiency and role in biogas upgrading. Three species of microalgae, namely, Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus obliquus, and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, were selected for ASW purification and biogas upgrading in photobioreactors with four different concentrations of 1300, 1000, 700, and 300 mg L−1 COD (chemical oxygen demand). Co-cultivation of the fungus Ganoderma lucidum and C. vulgaris in 300 mg L−1 COD was the most efficient for reduction of COD, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus by 79.74 ± 4.87%, 74.28 ± 6.13% and 85.37 ± 6.84%, respectively. With respect to biogas upgrading, co-cultivation of G. lucidum and P. subcapitata in 700 mg L−1 COD showed the maximum CO2 removal efficiency of 84.77 ± 3.04%. These results show the feasibility of simultaneously removing nutrients in ASW and CO2 in biogas using fungi-microalgae pellets.
Biogas slurry treatment and biogas upgrading by microalgae-based systems under the induction of different phytohormones

Abstract:The low grade of biogas and the difficulty of treating biogas slurry are the two major bottlenecks limiting the sustainable development of the fermentation engineering. This study investigates the potential role of microalgae-microbial symbiosis and phytohormones in solving this challenge. Chlorella microalgae were combined with endophytic bacteria (S395-2) and Clonostachys fungus to construct symbiotic systems. Growth, photosynthetic activity, and carbon dioxide and pollutant removal out of biogas slurry and biogas were analyzed under treatment with three different phytohormones (cytokinin, synthetic strigolactones (GR24), natural strigolactones). The Chlorella-S395-2-Clonostachys symbiont achieved the highest purification efficiency under GR24 induction, with removal efficiency exceeding 86% for chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorous, and total nitrogen, as well as over 76% for CO2. Economic efficiency can be increased by about 150%. The positive correlation between treatment effectiveness and co-culture performance suggests a promising avenue for developing symbiotic systems for biogas slurry treatment and biogas upgrading.

Abstract:Algae symbiosis technology shows great potential in the synchronous treatment of biogas slurry and biogas, which has promising applications. For improving nutrients and CO 2 removal rates, the present work constructed four microalgal systems: Chlorella vulgaris ( C. vulgaris ) monoculture, C. vulgaris— Bacillus licheniformis ( B. licheniformis ), C. vulgaris— activated sludge, and C. vulgaris— endophytic bacteria (S395-2) to simultaneously treat biogas as well as biogas slurry under GR24 and 5DS induction. Our results showed that the C. vulgaris— endophytic bacteria (S395-2) showed optimal growth performance along with photosynthetic activity under the introduction of GR24 (10 −9 M). Under optimal conditions, CO 2 removal efficiency form biogas, together with chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus and total nitrogen removal efficiencies from biogas slurry reached 67.25 ± 6.71%, 81.75 ± 7.93%, 83.19 ± 8.32%, and 85.17 ± 8.26%, respectively. The addition of symbiotic bacteria isolated from microalgae can promote the growth of C. vulgaris , and the exogenous addition of GR24 and 5DS can strengthen the purification performance of the algae symbiosis to achieve the maximum removal of conventional pollutants and CO 2 .

Abstract:To realize the synchronous purification of raw biogas and biogas slurry, the algal-fungal symbiont pellets were cultivated by supplementing strigolactone (GR24) under different mixed LED light wavelengths. The optimal light intensity was proved to be red and blue in the ratio of 5:5. The symbionts treated with 10−9 M GR24 had the highest growth rate and mean daily productivity. The extracellular carbonic anhydrase activity and the content of chlorophyll were also affected by GR24 concentrations and mixed light wavelengths. With the induction of 10−9 M GR24, the maximum removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus reached 76.35 ± 6.87%, 78.77 ± 7.13% and 79.49 ± 7.43%, respectively. Besides, the CO2 removal efficiency reached 59.32 ± 5.19% when the concentration of GR24 was 10−7 M. This work will be beneficial for large-scale biogas slurry purification and biogas upgrading using co-cultivation of microalgae and fungi.

Abstract:Microalgae have been identified as a promising option for simultaneous bioremediation of wastewater and production of valuable biomass (i.e., high value-added products and bioenergy). This study investigated the potential for applying microalgae-microalgae consortia to treat biogas slurry with high ammonia nitrogen (156.60 ± 1.32 mg·L −1 ) and pH (9.53 ± 0.23) value. Different co-culture systems were established using various microalgae (i.e., Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Tetradesmus obliquus ). The results indicated that co-cultivation of microalgae significantly enhanced the tolerance of microorganisms to biogas slurry and improved nutrient removal efficiencies. Particularly, C. vulgaris - C. pyrenoidosa - T. obliquus co-cultivation system performed best, leading to high removal efficiencies of 80.23 ± 0.45 %, 80.40 ± 0.57 %, and 68.54 ± 0.20 % for total nitrogen (TN), ammonium (NH 4 + -N) and total phosphorus (TP), respectively. Particularly, synergistic effects of this co-culture system on the increase in biomass growth was also observed, with dry weight of 0.410 ± 0.0071 g·L −1 . The highest extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content (63.97 ± 0.21 mg·L −1 ) of C. vulgaris - C. pyrenoidosa - T. obliquus highlighted the crucial role of microalgal co-cultivation in stimulating the formation of microalgal aggregates, thereby enhancing the adaptability of microalgae to stressful environment associated with biogas slurry. Furthermore, this co-cultivated system facilitated the production of high value-added products, with protein and lipid contents of 37.53 ± 0.83 % and 31.33 ± 0.78 %, respectively. Fatty acid analysis revealed that co-culture-derived biodiesel could fulfill the standard specifications, reinforcing the fact that microalgae biomass could serve as a sustainable feedstock for biodiesel production. The findings of this study shed a light on the application potential of a microalgae-microalgae co-culture system for effectively treating biogas slurry.

Abstract:The improper disposal of biogas slurry will result in significant pollution of the environment. Microalgae-bacteria symbiosis systems can effectively treat biogas slurry while also producing useful biomass. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris (C.V) and indigenous Shinella sp. YHB03 (S.S) were co-cultured and mono-cultured to purify biogas slurry. The inoculation ratio of C.V and S.S in the co-culture was optimized. The enhancement rate was creatively introduced to quantitatively analyze the changes between co-cultures and mono-cultures. The introduction of S.S into the C.V culture increased the carbon emission reduction capacity of the system, improved the microbe's tolerance to biogas slurry, and raised algal cell viability. Biomass production, pollutants removal and value-added products output were significantly enhanced when co-cultured C.V with S.S. And as the inoculation ratio of C.V and S.S increased from 2:1 to 50:1, this synergistic effect increased at first, then dropped, with 20:1 being the optimal. When co-cultured C.V with S.S at inoculation ratio of 20:1, the microalgae cell viability attained 84.84%, the biomass productivity reached 80 mg·L−1·day−1, and the NH4+-N, TP, TOC and IC removal efficiencies achieved 72.2%, 48.3%, 65% and 63.4%, respectively. This study provides an environmentally sustainable strategy for biogas slurry treatment.

Abstract:In this study, microalgae-bacteria consortia were developed using bacteria and microalgae isolated from biogas slurry for enhanced nutrients recovery and promoted microalgae growth in wastewater. The enhancement rate was introduced to quantify the interaction between bacteria and microalgae. Co-culture of the indigenous microalgae and bacteria could significantly improve the tolerance of microorganisms to pollutants, increase value-added products' production, promote nutrients removal, and reduce carbon emissions compared to mono-culture. The co-culture of Chlorella sp. GZQ001 and Lysinibacillus sp. SJX05 performed best, with its biomass, lipid, protein and fatty acid methyl ester productivities achieved 113.3, 19.2, 40.9 and 3.7 mg·L-1·d-1, respectively. The corresponding nutrients removal efficiencies for ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, total organic carbon, and total phosphorus were 83.2%, 82.1%, 34.0% and 76.6%, respectively. These results indicated that co-culture of certain indigenous bacteria and microalgae is beneficial to biogas slurry treatment and microalgae growth.

Abstract:Recent research interest has focused on microalgae cultivation for biogas slurry purification and biogas upgrading due to the requirement of high efficiency for nutrient uptake and CO 2 capture, with economic feasibility and environmental benefits. Numerous studies have suggested that biogas slurry purification and biogas upgrading can occur simultaneously via microalgae-based technology. However, there is no comprehensive review on this technology with respect to the nutrient removal from biogas slurry and biogas upgrading. This article summarizes microalgal cultivation with biogas slurry and biogas from anaerobic digestion. The parameters, techniques, and modes of microalgae cultivation have been discussed in detail to achieve high efficiency in biogas slurry purification and biogas upgrading. In addition, the evaluation of energy efficiency and safety has also been explored. Compared with mono-cultivation of microalgae and co-cultivation of microalgae and bacteria, microalgae-fungi symbiosis has demonstrated greater development prospect and higher energy efficiency and the energy consumption for pollutants and CO 2 removal were 14.2–39.0% · USD −1 and 19.9–23.3% · USD −1 , respectively. Further, a sustainable recycling scheme is proposed for the purification of biogas slurry from anaerobic digestion process and biogas upgrading via microalgae-based technology.

Abstract:` Raw biogas is a valuable renewable energy but usually requires upgrading. The mixed LED (light-emitting diode) light wavelengths achieved much better microalgae growth than that of the monochromatic. The best LED light wavelength mix ratio for both biogas upgrading and biogas slurry nutrient removal was the red:blue ratio of 5:5. Lower influent CH4 (methane) concentration achieved higher biogas slurry nutrient removal efficiency, whereas moderate influent CH4 concentration achieved the best biogas upgrading effect. Therefore the optimal parameters were determined to lie between the low and moderate influent CH4 concentrations and the mixed red:blue ratio of 5:5 LED light wavelengths. They achieved the best biogas upgrading and biogas slurry nutrient purification effects with the following values: 92.60 +/- 2.24% (v/v) of upgraded biogas CH4 concentration, 85.73 +/- 4.26% of chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency, 73.21 +/- 2.51% of total nitrogen removal efficiency, and 73.89 +/- 4.82% total phosphorus removal efficiency. Abstract:The piggery digestate of high ammonia was mixed with the anoxic aerated effluent of high nitrate and phosphorus, to cultivate a microalgal-bacterial consortium for simultaneous pollution removal and resource recovery. The highest removal of total inorganic nitrogen was achieved at 324.77 mg/L in 40% piggery digestate mixed with 60% anoxic aerated effluent, along with the most microalgae biomass production. The crude protein and fatty acids of C14-C20 in microalgae cells were 21.80% and 69.78%, indicating that this mixing strategy could produce abundant microalgal biomass suitable for biofuel generation and animal feed. High-throughput sequencing showed that microbial diversity increased and Paenibacillus, Thiopseudomonas and Pseudomonas were the dominant species promoting microalgal growth. Overall, these results provided a new insight of mixing two types of wastewaters for cultivating microalgal-bacterial consortia, to remove contamination and recover nutrients simultaneously.

Abstract:Promoting biomass production of the involved strains simultaneously with efficient nutrients removal from wastewater is realistic significance to ensure successful application of microalgae-based process for wastewater treatment. Enhancement of biomass productivity and nutrients removal by mixotrophic cultivation of Desmodesmus sp.CHX1 was conducted in this study when treating aerated piggery wastewater. The results showed that air-stripping might be an effective option as a pre-treatment to remove ammonia nitrogen from piggery wastewater. Mixotrophic cultivation of microalga-bacteria system significantly promoted algal growth and nutrients removal efficiency with the maximal biomass and lipid productivity being 0.869gl(-1)d(-1) and 118.2mgl(-1)d(-1) (14.5% of the lipid content), respectively, which were superior to other reported values. Nutrients in the piggery wastewater were also removed efficiently, for example, the removal rates of total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus were 87.3%, over 95%, and 93.1%, respectively. This study suggested that mixotrophic cultivation of microalgae-bacteria system might be a practical alternative to efficiently enhance nutrients removal from piggery wastewater coupled with biomass production. A slight reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD), however, indicate that it cannot replace the traditional biological treatment, and more researches are required to find the optimum balance between reduction in COD value and biomass production.

Abstract:This study compared the performance of three microalgae-based techniques, namely, microalgae monoculture, microalgae co-culture with activated sludge, and microalgae- Ganoderma lucidum S395-2 endophytic bacteria co-culture, for concurrent biogas slurry purification and biogas upgrading. Effects of microalgae species, algae treatment technologies, and exogenous addition of 5-deoxystrigol (5-DS) on strains growth and photosynthesis within different microalgae-based treatment technology systems, as well as the purification effects were studied. Microalgae co-cultured with G. lucidum- bacterium significantly improved the photosynthetic capacity, biomass, nutrient removal efficiency, and biogas conversion rate. The Tetradesmus obliquus - G. lucidum -bacterium consortium with 5-DS at 10 -11 M exhibited highest purification efficiency, with the a removal of 87.63 ± 8.51% chemical oxygen demand (COD), 89.76 ± 8.49% total nitrogen and 88.62 ± 8.53% total phosphorus from the biogas slurry and the removal of CO 2 in the biogas was 76.59 ± 7.36%.

Abstract:The slurry from anaerobic digestion process (biogas slurry) is now well known to potentially cause water eutrophication and even large-scale algal blooms. The Chlorella vulgaris utilized in this research is able to purify the biogas slurry effectively under optimum light quality and light intensity supply strategy. The descending order of dry cell weight for C vulgaris reproduction and nutrient removal efficiency of biogas slurry both are red > white > yellow > purple > blue > green, indicating that the red light is the optimum light quality. Furthermore, this study was among the first attempt to analyzed the economic efficiency for nutrient removal under various light intensity supply strategies, and found out that the optimal light intensity supply strategy used for microalgae culture should be incremental intensity strategy, rather than constant intensity strategy, to avoid light energy wastage and photoinhibition. The optimal light intensity supply strategy is: Phase 1,0-48 h with 800 pilot m(-2) s(-1); Phase 2,48-96 h with 1200 mu mol m(-2) s(-1); and Phase 3, 96-144 h with 1600 mu mol m(-2) s(-1). Abstract:利用人工小球藻-灵芝菌共生体在光生物反应器系统中，对预处理后的沼液进行了生物净化处理研究。考察了红色光质和蓝色光质的不同混合光质(红光:蓝光比为8:2；5:5和2:8)，在不同受理时间下的沼液净化效果。结果表明，藻菌共生体对主要污染物的去除效果受处理时间影响显著(P < 0.05)，实验启动1~4 d去除效果增加明显。同时，当红光:蓝光为5:5时，沼液中COD、TN和TP去除效果均为最佳，去除率分别达到80.42% ± 6.36%，75.63% ± 6.56%和78.83% ± 6.35%。 In this work, we selected the technologies involving the co-cultivation of Scenedesmus obliquus with Ganoderma lucidum cultured in photobioreactor to research the pretreated biogas slurry nutrient removal. The selected light qualities were mixed red light and blue light (red:blue = 8:2, 5:5, 2:8) under difference process time. The results show that the artificial algal-fungal symbiont has significantly higher nutrients removal efficiency (P < 0.05) by process time under its treatment, and in the initial time 1 - 4 d, the nutrients removal efficiency was increased dramatically. The red: blue = 5:5 achieved the highest COD (80.42% ± 6.36%), TN (75.63% ± 6.56%) and TP (78.83% ± 6.35%) removal efficiency by the artificial algal-fungal symbiont.
