Abstract:Surface tension is a basic and important thermophysical property for fluids. In this work, a model based on the gradient theory combining with the volume translation Peng-Robinson EOS was established to predict the surface tension of HCs/HCs and HCs/CO 2 binary mixtures, this model is predictive which does not rely on the experimental data of surface tension and vapor-liquid equilibrium of binary mixtures. The calculation results show that present model has good prediction accuracy on two kinds of specific HCs/HCs binary systems, one is mixtures with small difference of carbon atom number, the other one is mixtures with chain/cycle or cycle/cycle molecular structure, and the model can also predict the surface tension of HCs/CO 2 binary systems.
Simplified Gradient Theory Modeling of the Surface Tension for Binary Mixtures

Abstract:In this work, the gradient theory was combined with the volume translation Peng-Robinson and Soave Redlich-Kwong equations of state (VTPR and VTSRK EOSs) and the influence parameter correlation to predict the surface tension of binary mixtures. The density profiles of mixtures across the interface were assumed to be linearly distributed to simplify the gradient theory model. The only two inputs of the theory are the Helmholtz free-energy density of the homogeneous fluid and the influence parameter of the inhomogeneous fluid. The VTPR and VTSRK equations of state were applied to determine the Helmholtz free-energy density and the bulk properties. The influence parameter of the inhomogeneous fluid was calculated from a correlation published previously (Lin et al. Fluid Phase Equilib 254:75, 2007). The only adjustable coefficient of the simplified gradient theory was set equal to zero, which made the theory predictive. The surface tension predicted by this model shows good agreement with experimental data for binary non-polar and polar mixtures.

Abstract:This work contributes to the experimental measurements and modelling of the surface tension for the medium-to long-chained hydrocarbon mixtures involved in the Fischer-Tropsch process under the high-temperature con-ditions. For this purpose, the experimental surface tension measurements for the four investigated binary mix-tures of n-Hexadecane with n-Dodecane, 2,2,4,4,6,8,8-Heptamethylnonane, n-Octacosane and Squalane were performed by pendant drop method at temperatures up to 573.15 K covering the mass fractions of wn-Hexadecane = (0.25, 0.50 and 0.75). The combined expanded uncertainties of temperature, mole fraction and surface tension with a level of confidence of 0.95 (k = 2) are estimated to be 20 mK, within 0.6% and less than 2.2% over the entire temperature, respectively. On the basis of the surface tension correlations of pure substances in our previous study, the experimental surface tension data of the four investigated binary mixtures were correlated with the three-parameter Jouyban -Acree model and two-parameter Fu-Li-Wang (FLW) model. However, the experimental results show increasing negative deviations from Jouyban -Acree model with maximum values up to-2.66% and increasing positive deviations from FLW model with maximum values up to 9.93% in the high temperature zone. Therefore, we proposed a new model for correlating the surface tension of multicomponent mixtures with excellent reproducibility. The relative deviations of the experimental data from the present model are distributed evenly on both sides of the zero line and the relative absolute deviations are within 0.6%.

Abstract:Based on the surface chemical potential and Peng-Robinson equation of state, a new model is proposed to predict or correlate the surface tension of binary liquid mixtures. Using this method, the surface tension for 56 binary systems were calculated with total relative deviation 3. 38% and 1. 41% for prediction and correlation respectively. These results show that the model driven by this paper is simple, reliable and accurate. At the same time, this approach can be extended to calculate multicomponent system surface tension of liquid mixture.

Abstract:From the group statistical theory, a new universal equation is proposed for calculating the surface tension of solution with surface thermodynamics of solution. The simple form of the equation makes it convenient to use and its parameters have obvious physical meanings. With this model, we have explained the experimental phenomena and empirical rules in cited works. Tested for 302 kinds of binary system, the overall absolute average deviation for 3230 data sets is 0.49%, making the model more accurate than those found in the literature. It also accounts for systems unsuitable for reference models because the phase states of the pure components are different under solution condition.

Abstract:Surface tension is one of the basic thermophysical properties of fluids,especially with respect to heat transfer through a heat exchanging surface with bubbles of fluid drops on it.The gradient theory was combined with the volume translation Peng-Robinson EOS to predict the surface tension of normal binary mixtures and mixtures containing a supercritical component.There is no empirical constant in the model,which make the theory able to predict the surface tension of mixtures. The model can present the experimental data accurately in a wide temperature range and the accuracy can meet the requirements of the engineering applications.

Abstract:A new statistical mechanics model is developed to calculate the surface tensions of liquid mixtures, based on an equation of state for chain fluids and the scaled particle theory. Transferrable molecular parameters fitted to experimental phase equilibrium properties are used in this model. The feasibility of the model has been systematically tested in the correlations of 62 binary mixtures and in the predictions of 7 binary and 5 ternary mixtures, including nonassociating, self-associating, and cross-associating systems with overall average absolute relative deviations of 0.31%, 0.86%, and 0.92%, respectively. The accuracy of the new model makes it particularly well-suited in the calculation of surface tensions for a wide range of complex liquid mixtures.

Abstract:The wettability of droplets on a low surface energy solid is evaluated experimentally and theoretically. Water-ethanol binary mixture drops of several volumes are used. In the experiment, the droplet radius, height, and contact angle are measured. Analytical equations are derived that incorporate the effect of gravity for the relationships between the droplet radius and height, radius and contact angle, and radius and liquid surface energy. All the analytical equations display good agreement with the experimental data. It is found that the fundamental wetting behavior of the droplet on the low surface energy solid can be predicted by our model which gives geometrical information of the droplet such as the contact angle, droplet radius, and height from physical values of liquid and solid.

Abstract:Densities and viscosities have been measured over the whole composition ranges for the binary mixtures of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane with methylcyclohexane, ethylcyclohexane, or n-butylcyclohexane at temperatures T = (293.15 to 343.15) K and atmospheric pressure. Meanwhile, the refractive indices and surface tensions were measured at T = (293.15 to 323.15) K and T = (293.15 to 308.15) K, respectively. The excess molar volumes, VmE, the viscosity deviations, Δη, and the surface tension deviations, Δγ, for these binary systems are calculated and fitted to the Redlich–Kister equation, and the regression coefficients and the standard deviations of the fittings are given. All of the VmE, Δη and Δγ values are negative over the whole composition range for these systems. The values of ΔnD for these binary mixtures are all small, even negligible. These results may be useful for the development of the hydrocarbon fuels.

Abstract:The surface tension of liquid mixtures is an important physical property in heat and mass transfer at an interface. A differential maximum bubble pressure tensiometer is described. Evaluation of the apparatus with standard chemicals had shown that the apparatus is convenient and reliable. The surface tensions of o-xylene +acetic acid and m-xylene + acetic acid were measured from 303.15 K to 343.15 K over the entire range of concentration. The data were correlated as a function of temperature and mole fraction. The average deviation is less than 1 %.

Abstract:Densities, surface tensions and viscosities for binary mixtures of xylene with octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), include D4+ o-xylene, + m-xylene and + p-xylene systems, were measured over the whole composition range at 298.15 K. The surface tensions of the pure liquids and their mixtures are determined by the pendant drop method. The experimental data are used to calculate the surface tension deviations and viscosity deviations, respectively, which are fitted to the Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. The result shows that the surface tension deviations and viscosity deviations are negative for all the mixtures investigated. The values of surface tension deviations of equimolar solutions follow the order; o-xylene < m-xylene < p-xylene, whereas, the sequence of viscosity deviations is like that: p-xylene < m-xylene < o-xylene.

Abstract:The density, viscosity, and surface tension for the binary mixtures of sulfolane + ethyl acetate and + n-propyl acetate were measured at the atmospheric pressure and temperature ranging from 308.15 to 328.15 K. The linear equation and Andrade model were successfully used to correlate the experimental density and viscosity, respectively. On the basis of the experimental data, the viscosity energy barrier and the surface entropy/enthalpy were further obtained. The calculation of the molecular interaction energy using the Dmol3 module in Materials Studio software shows that the interaction energy in sulfolane + ethyl acetate is slightly greater than one in sulfolane + n-propyl acetate, which is consistent with the experimental observation. In addition, each experimental property of density, viscosity, and surface tension can well be reproduced by the square-well chain fluid with variable range (SWCF-VR) equation of state with one different binary adjustable parameter.

Abstract:The surface tensions of mixtures of diesel oil or gasoline and dimethoxymethane, dimethyl carbonate, or ethanol were measured at ambient pressure with surface tension laser light scattering (SLLS) method. The uncertainties were estimated to be less than +/- 2.0%. The results were correlated as a function of compositions, and the excess surface tensions were provided also.

Abstract:Recently Escobedo and Mansoori (AIChE J. 42(5): 1425, 1996) proposed a new expression, originally derived from statistical mechanics, for the surface tension prediction of pure fluids. In this report, the same theory is extended to the case of mixtures of organic liquids. Using the proposed equation surface tensions of 55 binary mixtures are predicted within an overall 0.50 AAD% which is better than the other available prediction methods. Using a corresponding states expression the surface tension of all the 55 binary mixtures are predicted within an overall 2.10 AAD%. The proposed model is also applicable to multicomponent liquid mixtures.

Improvement of Surface Tension Model and Numerical Investigation on Droplet Wetting Effect

Abstract:An improved surface tension model was obtained by optimizing the position of the extreme point. The particle clustering and shape distortion problems were solved by the model improved. The moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method combined with the improved model was adopted to simulate the wetting phenomenon with large deformation of the free surface. The shrinkage and wetting effect, due to the surface tension, between different substances (gas-liquid, solid-liquid or liquid-liquid) was examined and analyzed. The wetting angle and wetting area were extracted for analysis. The numerical result agrees well with the analytical one. Three sections could be observed in the liquid-solid wetting process. The wetting speed decreases with an increase in time and varies inversely with the wetting angle. Our results indicate that the MPS method combined with the improved surface tension model can simulate the interface tension force between different substances effectively and precisely.

Abstract:A generalized corresponding-state model based on two reference fluids was developed for the prediction of surface tensions for non-polar and weakly polar pure fluids and their binary mixtures. Four parameters, p(c), T-c, V-c and w, were used in this model, and the acentric factor w was used as a scaling parameter. This model has been tested for 69 pure substances and 20 binary mixtures; the average absolute deviations are 0.28 and 0.20 mN/m, respectively. The results indicate that the predictions by means of this model were in good agreement with experimental data. In addition, the calculated deviation would increase with the excess surface tension rising, and if the excess surface tension is less than 3 mN/m, the prediction will be good and credible.
