Science and technology collaboration platform for private SMEs and universities: A study in China

Abstract:Collaboration between industry and universities seems to have become increasingly important for industrialized countries. To realize the maximized profits through such collaboration, it is important to have a fruitful and healthy collaboration. SandT achievements collaboration platform in Wenzhou (China) is a new-fashioned form. This paper analyzes the collaboration relationship and explores the influence of collaboration on small- and medium-sized private enterprises (SMEs). Following a survey of 523 private SMEs and 61 universities, the results indicate that private SMEs can improve economic performance through the collaborations with universities on the platform. Furthermore, the economic performance of private SMEs is positively related with collaborated projects, (i.e. the more collaboration, the better economic performance). The results also reveal that SMEs choose different collaboration models on platform, which will produce different effect on economic performances of enterprises. © 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.
