Abstract:Numerical well test is an important tool to interpret the pressure data of the multiphase flow with complex boundary. When the effective thick-ness of layer changes greatly, numerical well test software will meet some problems during application. A fully implicit black oil model with the method of substitution of variables in modeling variable bubble point is proposed coupling with the well storage. The result shows that when gas disappears, the pressure derivative the has the same characteristics as the pressure derivative of single phase flow, and when the pressure de-crease from above to below bubble point, the pressure drop become more slowly and there is a fluctuation in curve the pressure derivative; and when the three phases appear, the length of the radical flow become more long than the other case.

Abstract:To meet the needs of China's oil well test analysis,research and development of the UST numerical well test software has been done.The software uses advanced PEBI grid to meet the needs of complex boundary,interference between wells and classified grid for the special reservoir,which can complete job of well test interpretation for three-phase of oil-gas-water,analog phenomenon over bubble point properly,has describing ability for a multi-layer,layer channeling flow,non-uniformity of reservoirs,and support importing function of the phase diagram and the geodetic coordinate,is capable of multi-well simulation according to selected well models.Example is presented with the characteristics of well test analysis,the down off pressure and pressure recovery of the pressure derivative of the typical characteristics are given.

Therefore analytical well test is always used to give an approximate analysis, and give an initial value for the numerical well test to improve the fitting speed. However, not all the parameters of the analytical well test interpretation can be assigned to numerical well test. The PVT data, well production, permeability and relative permeability are needed to add or to be modified. This paper takes oil and water multiphase for example to discuss the problems and gives some guidance to the users.

Abstract:The parameter adjustment for the numerical well test of single phase oil is presented in this paper in which the influence of well-bore storage, skin factor and viscosity for the curve shape of numerical well test is studied. For production well, the research shows what following. As the well-bore storage parameter increases, the well-bore storage period is extended, and the occurrence time of the underground flow is delayed. Performance in the double-logarithmic plot, the straight line segment and the peak shifted to the right, but the height of the peak is essentially the same. In the transition segment of well-bore storage to underground flow, when skin factor increases, the peak value of pressure derivative turns to larger, and liquidity reduces. In the period of radial flow, as the skin factor increases, the distance between pressure curve and pres-sure derivative curve is increased. Therefore the opening size of measured curve and calculated curve can be adjusted through the skin factor. The viscosity parameter increases causing the curve shape of recovery well test shifted to the upper-right. It means that as the fluid viscosity in-creases, the formation flow ability is reduced, the well-bore storage time is extended, and the bottom-hole pressure is dropped. Increase viscosity is equivalent to decrease permeability, so adjust the viscosity is equivalent to adjust the permeability.

Abstract:Well model have influence on calculation result. UST numerical well test software is used to study the difference of the well test curves when the well is treated as source-and-sink and inner boundary. When there is only one well in the simulated area and the flow around the well is easy to stable, Peaceman well model and the inner boundary well model have the same results. When the flow around the well is not stable, calculation result is sensitive to the size of the grid. Error is analyzed analyticly.

Abstract:In order to reduce the online calculations for power system simulations of transient stability, and dramatically improve numerical integration efficiency, a transient stability numerical integration algorithm for variable step sizes based on virtual input is proposed. The method for fully constructing the nonhomogeneous virtual input for a certain integration scheme is given, and the calculation method for the local truncation error of the power angle for the corresponding integration scheme is derived. A step size control strategy based on the predictor corrector variable step size method is proposed, which performs an adaptive control of the step size in the numerical integration process. The proposed algorithm was applied to both the IEEE39 system and a regional power system (5075 nodes, 496 generators) in China, and demonstrated a high level of accuracy and efficiency in practical simulations compared to the conventional numerical integration algorithm.

Abstract:The paper deals with a topical issue of defining oil reservoir properties during transient tests of horizontal wells equipped with information-measuring systems and reducing well downtime. The aim is to consider challenges and perspectives of developing models and algorithms for adaptive identification and interpretation of transient tests in horizontal wells with pressure buildup curve analysis. The models and algorithms should allow analyzing flow behavior, defining oil reservoir properties and determining well test completion time, as well as reducing well downtime. The present paper is based on the previous theoretical and practical findings in the spheres of transient well testing, systems analysis, system identification, function optimization and linear algebra. Field data and results of transient well tests with pressure buildup curve analysis have also been considered. The suggested models and algorithms for adaptive interpretation of transient tests conducted in horizontal wells with resulting pressure buildup curve make it possible to analyze flow behavior, as well as define the reservoir properties and determine well test completion time. The algorithms for adaptive interpretation are based on the integrated system of radial flow PBC models with time- dependent variables, account of additional a priori information and estimates of radial flow permeability. Optimization problems are solved with the case study of PBC interpretation for five horizontal wells of the Verkhnechonsk field.

Abstract:Based on the rapidly varying casing pressure method and multiphase flow theory, we have constructed a transient mathematical model for managed pressure drilling (MPD) that combines kick with mud loss in a single fracture. The finite difference method was used to iteratively solve this model. The model calculated values agree well with the experimental results, which confirms the reliability of the model. Casing pressure, casing shoe pressure, pit gain, outlet flow, and choke opening during the entire well control process are analyzed. Experimental results show that equality of inlet flow and outlet flow may not imply influx stoppage when a kick is coupled with mud loss. In addition, the loss rate at the casing shoe initially increases linearly over time and then decreases exponentially, ultimately becoming constant. After completion of well control, drilling can be safely continued until loss is negligible. This study may provide a theoretical basis for better control of wells with complicated kick and circulation loss in managed pressure drilling (MPD).

Abstract:Numerical well test interpretation of massive multistage fractured horizontal wells can be used for the fracturing effect evaluation, which is very important for productivity evaluation.However, few field case studies have been conducted.Numerical solution of oil-water two-phase flow based on PEBI grid and description of stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) by main fractures with infinite conductivity and improved permeability of the region with minor fractures are used in combination to interpret the transient pressure of massive multistage fractured horizontal wells in tight oil reservoirs in Daqing oilfield.The interpretation and sensitivity analysis of permeability of exterior region show that the value of pressure derivative becomes smaller at early time and becomes larger at late time when the permeability of exterior region decreases, compared with pressure derivative without permeability modification, which indicates a turning point on the curves of pressure derivative.Prior to the turning point, the pressure derivative with smaller permeability in exterior region is relatively smaller, while after the point, the pressure derivative is larger.The time of appearance of the turning point is related to the magnitude of permeability between those of exterior and interior regions.Therefore, when good fitting of pressure derivative curves achieves at early time and bad fitting of pressure derivative curves at late time, adjustment of permeability of exterior region cannot wholly improve the fitting effect, and other parameters need to be adjusted to improve the fitting.This study can facilitate future transient pressure analysis for massive multistage fractured horizontal wells in tight oil reservoirs.

Abstract:The methods for calculating the single well controlled reserves by pressure build up curve are mostly using time to calculate the single well drainage area,and then apply volumetric method to obtain single well controlled reserves.If the test data is undulatory or not determined,it will be hardly to get the single well controlled reserves.A new method for single well controlled reserves based on pressure is proposed,which can avoid the limits of the methods based on time.It uses Horner straight line to calculate the single well drainage area,and then obtain the single well controlled reserves.The practical application result proves the reliability and validity of this method.
Intelligent Time-Stepping for Practical Numerical Simulation

Abstract:Abstract We present a novel reservoir simulator time-step selection approach which uses machine-learning (ML) techniques to analyze the mathematical and physical state of the system and predict time-step sizes which are large while still being efficient to solve, thus making the simulation faster. An optimal time-step choice avoids wasted non-linear and linear equation set-up work when the time-step is too small and avoids highly non-linear systems that take many iterations to solve. Typical time-step selectors use a limited set of features to heuristically predict the size of the next time-step. While they have been effective for simple simulation models, as model complexity increases, there is an increasing need for robust data-driven time-step selection algorithms. We propose two workflows – static and dynamic – that use a diverse set of physical (e.g., well data) and mathematical (e.g., CFL) features to build a predictive ML model. This can be pre-trained or dynamically trained to generate an inference model. The trained model can also be reinforced as new data becomes available and efficiently used for transfer learning. We present the application of these workflows in a commercial reservoir simulator using distinct types of simulation model including black oil, compositional and thermal steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD). We have found that history-match and uncertainty/optimization studies benefit most from the static approach while the dynamic approach produces optimum step-sizes for prediction studies. We use a confidence monitor to manage the ML time-step selector at runtime. If the confidence level falls below a threshold, we switch to traditional heuristic method for that time-step. This avoids any degradation in the performance when the model features are outside the training space. Application to several complex cases, including a large field study, shows a significant speedup for single simulations and even better results for multiple simulations. We demonstrate that any simulation can take advantage of the stored state of the trained model and even augment it when new situations are encountered, so the system becomes more effective as it is exposed to more data.
A Numerical Investigation on Kick Control with the Displacement Kill Method during a Well Test in a Deep-Water Gas Reservoir: A Case Study

Abstract:The efficient exploitation of marine oil and gas resources holds significant potential to mitigate the current severe energy crisis. Regrettably, incidents, such as gas kick and even blowouts, can significantly impact normal development activities. The displacement kill method is one effective strategy for well control in deep-water areas. In this study, the detailed mathematical method for determining kill parameters involved in the kill operation by using the displacement kill method was proposed. Of course, this includes both cases: one where the kill fluid leaks during the kill process and another where no leakage occurs. Meanwhile, its applicability was verified through comparison with experimental results. Then, evolution characteristics of kill parameters, when killing fluid leakage occurs and when it does not occur, were analyzed. Finally, factors, such as pit gain and shut-in casing pressure, affecting the kill parameters of kill operation, were explored. It was found that the experimental and calculated results show great similarity, although there are slight differences between them. The total kill time in the simulation is 44 s shorter than that in the verification experiment. This indicates that the model established in this study is suitable for simulating the process of kill operation using the displacement kill method. In addition, the investigation results show that leakage of kill fluid increases the difficulty of the kill operation and prolongs the operation time. The number of kill cycles in the presence of kill fluid leakage is one more than that when there is no fluid leakage, resulting in an additional 70 min of total duration. Furthermore, the increase in pit gain and the rise in shut-in casing pressure can also pose challenges to the kill operations. The total kill time will be extended by 164 min when the mud pit gain increases from 20 m3 to 50 m3. The number of kill cycles rises by two when the shut-in casing pressure is increased from 5 MPa to 20 MPa. To ensure the safety of the drilling operation in abnormally high-pressure reservoirs, it is crucial to monitor parameters such as casing pressure during the drilling process and timely well control measures.

Development of A Numerical Well Test Simulator for Polymer-Surfactant Flooding and the Pressure Transient Response Study

Abstract:The lack of well test interpretation techniques applicable to chemical flooding reservoirs has restricted the formation evaluation and project design in EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) production. In this study, a two-phase five-component well test model for polymer-surfactant flooding is proposed which considers the main physicochemical phenomena including polymer in-situ viscosity, permeability reduction, inaccessible pore volume, adsorption, phase behavior, capillary desaturation, and relative permeability. Base on PEBI gridding, a fully implicit numerical well test simulator is developed. The impact of polymer and surfactant injection on transient pressure response is revealed by parametric studies. Results show that the injection of polymer increases the peak value of the derivative curve and the flow-continued time, and the surfactant injection affects the pressure transient response in an opposite way to polymer injection. The qualitative explanation for the impacts of polymer and surfactant injection on pressure transient response is given via the changing of mobility in the near wellbore region.
Numerical Investigation of the Influence of the Drill String Vibration Cyclic Loads on the Time Dependent Wellbore Stability Analysis

Abstract:Abstract Wellbore instability is one of the most important causes of Non-Productive Time causing billions of dollars of losses every year in the petroleum industry. During the drilling operations, the drilling mud is generally utilized to maintain the wellbore stability. However, the drilling mud is subjected to fluctuations caused by several processes such as the drill string vibration cyclic loads which can result into wellbore instability. In this paper, a nonlinear finite element software ABAQUS is utilized as the numerical simulator to evaluate the time dependent pore pressure and stress distribution around the wellbore after integration of drill string vibration cyclic loads. A MATLAB program is then developed to investigate the wellbore stability by computation of the time dependent wellbore collapse pressure and fracture pressure. The numerical results showed that the safe mud window which was initially constant became narrower with the time after integration of vibration cyclic load. The collapse pressure without vibration cyclic load increased by 14.33 % at the final simulation time while the fracture pressure decreased by 13.80 %. Interestingly, the safe mud windows widened with the increase of the normalized wellbore radius as the wellbore fracture pressure increased and the collapse pressure decreased. This study provides an insight into the coupling of the wellbore stability and the continuous cyclic loads generated by drill string vibrations which is an aspect that has been rarely discussed in the literature.
A new two-dimensional transient forecast model of wellbore temperature based on precise time step integration method

Abstract:Dramatic temperature changes in the wellbore can lead to the severe deformation and breakage of the wellbore string, packer seal malfunction, and other operational accidents. A new two-dimensional (2D) transient forecast model of the wellbore temperature is established to provide accurate temperature parameters for the precision mechanical analysis of the wellbore string and the safety evaluation of well integrity. Furthermore, a precise time step integration scheme of the forecast model using the precise time step integration method of a one-point subdomain is proposed. A solution method for the 2D transient forecast model of the wellbore temperature is proposed by combining the precise time step integration method. Finally, a case study focused on a high-temperature deep gas well with a transient wellbore temperature is presented by comparing the calculation results of the different models and solution methods. The sensitivity analysis of the wellbore temperature is performed as well. The results indicate that the forecast model in this paper has higher accuracy than the existing two-dimensional transient model. By contrast analysis of the finite difference method and the solution method that combines the precise time step integration method, the solution method has the advantages of better convergence and faster calculation speed. The major sensitive parameters that affect the stability time of wellbore temperature are ranked as follows: gas production rate, tubing size, specific heat, temperature gradient, gas relative density, and thermal conductivity. The work presented can provide a theoretical foundation and technological basis for the transient forecast of the wellbore temperature, which is critical for well completion design and wellbore safety evaluation.

Abstract:The semi-analytical or numerical solutions are the most used for pressure-transient analysis (PTA) for finite-conductivity fractured wells in naturally fractured reservoir now. However, the semi-analytical solutions are time-consuming and easily lead to inaccuracy at low fracture conductivity with less discretized segments. The numerical solutions are more time-consuming and usually face convergence and stability problems. These solutions are not convenient for practical well test analysis in Oilfield. Our motivation for this paper is to develop simply, quickly and stably analytical PTA solutions for finite-conductivity fractured wells in naturally fractured reservoir that can serve the well test analysis in Oilfield. We first derive a transformation method which can extend finite-conductivity fracture solutions in homogeneous reservoir to dual-porosity reservoir. Thereafter, analytical solutions for finite-conductivity fractured wells in homogeneous reservoir are presented. Then we provide a series of analytical finite-conductivity fracture solutions in dual-porosity reservoir under different boundary conditions based on the transformation method and homogeneous reservoir solutions. Six solutions given in the published literatures are used to verify the proposed solutions under different dimensionless fracture conductivity (FcD). Results indicate that (a) the proposed solutions are valid for FcD>1 with maximum error (5%) and this error will quickly decreases to around 1%; (b) the proposed solutions are applicable for infinite, closed and constant-pressure boundary conditions; (c) the proposed solutions can be extended to triple-porosity naturally fractured reservoirs after changing the f(s) function; (d) the proposed solutions are accurate and can greatly shorten the time of well test interpretation comparing to conventional solutions. Finally, the pressure-buildup data from Shunbei Oilfield is interpreted using the proposed solutions to verify its feasibility and practicability. The findings of this work can help for better understanding of its potential in quick well test analysis for field cases.

Abstract:Abstract Well intervention requires reliable pressure data and real-time monitoring of multiple annuli simultaneously to confirm appropriate pressure response of actuated valves and components. The current industry standard uses traditional monitoring methods which involve reading digital crystal gauges and manually recording the values at increments for interpretation. This paper presents a case study where the operator reduced the probability of human error, and improved assurance and safety by utilizing a digital solution during an intervention campaign. During operations, personnel used digital pressure testing software to monitor annulus pressures while performing acid stimulation pressure pumping operations and verified test outcomes during additional intervention operations. To conduct these tests, pressure transducers were tied into the locations where a digital gauge would normally be located, and cables connected to a data acquisition unit for interpretation by operations personnel. The software monitored and analyzed the data in real time to validate the operator's criteria, and all real-time data was able to be viewed both on-site and remotely. When tests completed, reports were auto generated and stored for ease of access. The process described above resulted in a safer testing environment by utilizing transducer cables and a data acquisition unit, allowing personnel to remain a safe distance away, as opposed to the traditional method of taking manual readings near pressurized areas. High resolution digital data was constantly monitored, instead of taking readings in increments, allowing for the improved visualization of annulus or tubing pressures in real time and improving the efficiency of operations. This on-site and remote real-time visualization allowed for better communication and interpretation of appropriate pressure response when shifting sleeves, equalizing pressures, or performing coiled tubing cleanouts. When all intervention work was completed, a comprehensive end of well report was generated to provide a record of all operations and reduce communication errors during handover or subsequent operations throughout the well lifecycle. This digital software solution and equipment tie in used for intervention operations provides a safer environment, more accountability, improved decision making, and more efficient communication in handover. The ability for real time monitoring of pressure response improves participation and collaboration between personnel both on-site and in remote locations. Comprehensive documentation provides an auditable history of events which can be used to improve future operations and promote best practices.
