Abstract:A series of quinoxaline based metal-free organic sensitizers has been designed and synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The absorption, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for all sensitizers have been systematically investigated. It is found that the incorporation of quinoxaline unit instead of thienopyrazine unit results in a negative shift of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels for FNE44, FNE45, FNE46, and FNE47, in comparison to FNE32, which induces a remarkable enhancement of the electron injection driving force from the excited organic sensitizers to the TiO2 semiconductor. Moreover, when the alkyl substituents are removed from the spacer part in FNE44 to the donor part in FNE45 and FNE46, a more conjugated system and a bathochromically shifted maximum absorption band can be realized, which consequently results in an increased light harvesting efficiency and photogenerated current. In addition, the length of the alkyl substituents on the donor part has a certain influence on the DSSC performance. Combining the three contributions, FNE46,based DSSC with liquid electrolyte displays the highest power conversion efficiency (eta) of 8.27%. Most importantly, a eta of 7.14% has been achieved for FNE46 based quasi-solid-state DSSC and remained at 100% of the initial value after continuous light soaking for 1000 h, which indicates that FNE46 is appropriate for promising commercial application. Our findings will facilitate the understanding of the crucial importance of molecular engineering and pave a new path to design novel metal-free organic dyes for highly efficient and stable DSSCs.

Abstract:A novel near-infrared (NIR) organic sensitizer FNE53 with a strong electron-withdrawing unit, dithieno[2,3-a:3',2'-c]phenazine, has been designed and synthesized for quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). By simply fusing the two thiophene rings on quinoxaline unit in sensitizer FNE48, the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) band bathochromically shifts from 542 nm for FNE48 to 629 nm for FNE53 in toluene solution. The absorption spectrum of sensitizer FNE53 covers the whole visible region and extends to the NIR region, which exhibits complementary absorption profile to another organic dye FNE46 based on quinoxaline. When FNE46 and FNE53 are used as cosensitizers for metal-free cocktail-type quasi-solid-state DSSCs, sensitizer FNE53 not only extends the photoresponse range but also suppresses the intermolecular interactions among the dye molecules. Therefore, the cocktail-type quasi-solid-state DSSC displays much higher IPCE value compared with that for the DSSC sensitizer based on FNE53 and a broader IPCE response in comparison to that for the DSSC sensitizers based on FNE46, respectively. After the molar ratio between the two cocktail dyes is optimized, the highest energy conversion efficiency of 8.04% is achieved in a metal-free quasi-solid-state DSSC cosensitized with FNE46 and FNE53, which exhibits good long-term stability after continuous light soaking for 1000 h.
New Pyrido[3,4-B] Pyrazine-Based Sensitizers for Efficient and Stable Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:A series of new pyrido[3,4-b] pyrazine-based organic sensitizers (PP-I and APP-I-IV) containing different donors and p-spacers have been synthesized and employed in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The absorption spectra properties of dyes are analysed by density functional theory (DFT). The calculated results in combination with the experiments suggest that the absorption characteristics and excited state features will mainly be dominated by charge transfer transitions from the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and to higher LUMO orbitals. Furthermore, attaching the octyloxy groups significantly extends the p-conjugation of the donor in APPIV, which raises the HOMO energy and facilitates its oxidation. As a consequence, APP-IV exhibits the lowest HOMO-LUMO energy gap among all dyes, which, in turn, corresponds well with the red shift of the absorption spectra. Transient photovoltage and photocurrent decay experiments as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicate that the electron lifetime and charge recombination resistance are increased due to the introduction of octyloxy chains on the donor unit, resulting in the high photovoltage based on APP-IV. It was found that APP-IV based DSSCs with liquid electrolyte display the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.12%. Importantly, a PCE of 6.20% has been achieved for APP-IV based DSSCs with ionic-liquid electrolytes and retained 97% of the initial value after continuous light soaking for 1000 h at 60 degrees C. This renders these pyrido[3,4-b] pyrazine-based sensitizers quite promising candidates for highly efficient and stable DSSCs.

Abstract:Two novel X-shaped organic sensitizers (FNE48 and FNE49) with a quinoxaline bridge have been designed and synthesized. The structural difference between the two sensitizers is the number of anchoring groups. The relationship between the chemical structures and their optoelectronic properties has been systematically investigated. It is found that a broader and more intense charge transfer band is observed for sensitizer FNE48, with a single anchoring group, in comparison to sensitizer FNE49, which contains twin anchoring groups. Consequently, a high power conversion efficiency (eta) of 6.2% is achieved for a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) based on sensitizer FNE48 using a liquid electrolyte. Moreover, a eta of 5.2% is obtained for a quasi-solid-state DSSC based on sensitizer FNE48 and this remains at 100% of the initial value after continuous light irradiation for 1500 h.

Abstract:Three near infrared (NIR) metal-free organic sensitizers (FNE32, FNE34, FNE36) based on the thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine derivative have been designed and synthesized for application in quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These organic dyes demonstrate maximum absorption bands at 596-625 nm due to the presence of the thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine derivative, which facilitates the intramolecular electron transfer from the donor to the acceptor. Quasi-solid-state DSSCs based on FNE34 display efficient photoelectric conversion over the whole visible range extending into the NIR region up to 900 nm with maximum incident monochromatic photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 77%, yielding a short-circuit photocurrent density of 16.24 mA cm(-2) and a power conversion efficiency of 5.30%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest efficiency for quasi-solid-state DSSCs based on an organic NIR dye. When exposed to one-sun illumination for 1000 h, the quasi-solid-state DSSC based on FNE34 exhibits good long-term stability with almost constant power conversion efficiency.
Theoretical Study of WS-9-Based Organic Sensitizers for Unusual Vis/NIR Absorption and Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are the most promising low-cost photovoltaic devices. Whereas, the absorption bands of most organic sensitizers, the most vital component in DSSCs, are limited to a relatively narrow visible range. To obtain efficient sensitizer, a series of D-A-pi-A metal-free dyes have been designed based on one of the best sensitizers WS-9 by modifying auxiliary acceptor and characterized theoretically. The results illustrate that introduction of auxiliary heterocycle acceptor is revealed to very narrow band gap (HOMO-LUMO), leading to an obvious red-shifted broad near-infrared absorption band in the range of 750-1950 nm compared to WS-9 (536 nm). The critical parameters in close connection with the short-circuit current density (J(sc)), open circuit voltage (V-oc), including singlet excited state lifetime (tau), total dipole moments (mu(normal)), the conduction band of edge of the semiconductor substrate (Delta E-CB), and regeneration driving forces (Delta G(reg)) are superior to those of WS-9. Therefore, these novel sensitizers would be a promising candidate for improving the performance of the DSSCs.
Rational Design of ZL003-based Organic Dyes for Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Influence of Alkynyl Group and Π-Spacers on Photovoltaic Performance

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have displayed huge potential in inexpensive, efficient, and clean solar energy-technology. To achieve highly efficient DSSCs, a series of D -n-A organic dyes were designed and their optoelectrical properties were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Compared with ZL003, ZS1 designed by introducing the triple bond between donor and n bridge, has higher conjugation, narrower HOMO-LUMO bandgap, and extended ab-sorption spectra. Then five new organic dyes were designed by substituting benzothiadiazole part of ZS1 with five electron-deficient heterocycles. The designed dyes have more conjugated structure, which leads to stronger light harvesting ability with the absorption spectra expanding to the near infrared region, the maximum absorption wavelength red shifting 78 nm similar to 448 nm and light harvesting efficiency (LHE) curve broadening obviously. The intermolecular electron transfer (IET) rate of the design dye is much faster than that of ZL003, over 85.3% of electrons in the design dye have been injected into TiO2 within 200 fs. Especially, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of BBTD, BTTD and BZOD is more than 25.7%, mainly re-flected in the obvious jump of the theoretical short current density (Jpred . sc ) by more than 68%. Therefore, the design dyes have a good application prospect. Abstract:Five organic dyes with pyridine-N-oxide as the anchor group and electron acceptor have been synthesized and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Benzothiadiazole was introduced in the conjugation system to increase the electron withdrawing properties, FTIR spectra showed that the coordination was between the pyridine-N-oxide and the Bronsted acid site on the TiO2 surface. The relationship between different dye structures and the performance of the DSSCs was investigated systematically. The location of the thiophene unit was studied, and the direct linkage of benzothiadiazole with pyridine-Noxide was beneficial to broaden the absorption. The donor-acceptor-acceptor-configured dye WL307, which has 2-ethylhexyloxy chains in the donor part, showed the best efficiency of 6.08% under 100 mWcm(-2) light illumination. The dye series showed a fairly good stability during the one month test period.
Novel Thiazolo[5,4-D]thiazole-based Organic Dyes for Quasi-Solid-state Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Abstract:A series of novel metal-free organic dyes containing the thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole moiety were designed and synthesized for quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Different alkoxy chains were introduced into the electron donor part of the dye molecules for comparison. The optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for all sensitizers were systematically investigated. It was found that the sensitizers with the different alkoxy groups have similar photophysical and electrochemical properties, such as absorbance and energy levels, owing to their close chemical structures. However, the quasi-solid-state DSSCs based on the resulting sensitizers exhibit different performance parameters. The quasi-solid-state DSSC based on sensitizer FNE74 with two octyloxy chains possessed the highest solar energy conversion efficiency of 5.10 % under standard AM 1.5G sunlight illumination without the use of coadsorbant agents.

Abstract:Thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine based organic sensitizers with cyanoacrylic acid (FNE64 and FNE66) or carboxylic acid (FNE65 and FNE67) as anchoring groups have been designed and synthesized to optimize the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of panchromatic sensitizer FNE32 with an identical auxiliary electron acceptor. Their absorption, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties are systematically investigated. It is found that sensitizers FNE65 and FNE67 with carboxylic acid as the anchoring group possess more negative LUMO levels as compared with sensitizers FNE64 and FNE66 with cyanoacrylic acid as the anchoring group. In addition to tuning the LUMO level of thieno[3,4-b] pyrazine based organic sensitizer FNE32 by attaching different anchoring groups, the number of the bridged benzene ring has been optimized and two types of organic sensitizers with D-A-pi-A (FNE64 and FNE65) and D-pi-A-pi-A (FNE66 and FNE67) frameworks have been comparatively investigated. Upon the incorporation of an additional phenylene unit into sensitizers FNE64 and FNE65 with the D-A-pi-A configuration, sensitizers FNE66 and FNE67 with the D-pi-A-pi-A structure exhibit unusual hypsochromically shifted absorption maxima. Moreover, the LUMO levels of the thieno[3,4-b] pyrazine based sensitizers FNE66 and FNE67 are lifted up, which results in a dramatically improved driving force for the electron injection from the excited dye molecules to the conduction band of the titania semiconductor. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency of the quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) based on FNE66 increases by 95% in comparison to that for the quasi-solid-state DSSC based on panchromatic sensitizer FNE32 whose photo-response range is over 900 nm. Our findings will facilitate the understanding of the crucial importance of energy level engineering and present a way for tuning the LUMO levels of organic sensitizers at a fixed electron acceptor.

Abstract:Three metal-free donor-acceptor-acceptor sensitizers with ionized pyridine and a reference dye were synthesized, and a detailed investigation of the relationship between the dye structure and the photophysical and photoelectrochemical properties and the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is described. The ionization of pyridine results in a red shift of the absorption spectrum in comparison to that of the reference dye. This is mainly attributable to the ionization of pyridine increasing the electron-withdrawing ability of the total acceptor part. Incorporation of the strong electron-withdrawing units of pyridinium and cyano acrylic acid gives rise to optimized energy levels, resulting in a large response range of wavelengths. When attached to TiO2 film, the conduction band of TiO2 is negatively shifted to a different extent depending on the dye. This is attributed to the electron recombination rate between the TiO2 film and the electrolyte being efficiently suppressed by the introduction of long alkyl chains and thiophene units. DSSCs assembled using these dyes show efficiencies as high as 8.8%.
Efficient quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells based on organic sensitizers containing fluorinated quinoxaline moiety

Abstract:Two novel organic sensitizers (FNE55 and FNE56) containing a 6,7-difluoroquinoxaline moiety have been designed and synthesized for quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). For comparison, an organic dye, FNE54, without fluorine has also been synthesized. The effects of the introduction of fluorine on the absorption, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties have been systematically investigated. Upon the incorporation of fluorine in the quinoxaline unit, the electron-withdrawing ability is strengthened, which results in the enhanced push-pull interactions and thus narrows the energy band gap. The absorption maximum wavelength in toluene solution bathochromically shifts from 504 nm for FNE54 to 511 nm for FNE55, and further to 525 nm for FNE56. However, although the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) are lowered down after the introduction of fluorines, the driving force for the photo-excited electrons from their excited states to the semiconductor conduction band is still sufficient. Consequently, the quasi-solid-state DSSC based on FNE56 exhibits a highest power conversion efficiency of 8.2%, which is 37% higher than that for FNE54 based quasi-solid-state DSSCs.
Enhanced Performance of Quasi-Solid-State Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells by Branching the Linear Substituent in Sensitizers Based on Thieno[3,4-C]Pyrrole-4,6-Dione

Abstract:Thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione-based organic sensitizers with triphenylamine (FNE38 and FNE40) or julolidine (FNE39 and FNE41) as electron-donating unit have been designed and synthesized. A linear hexyl group or a branched alkyl chain, the 2-ethylhexyl group, is incorporated into molecular skeleton of the dyes to minimize intermolecular interactions. The absorption, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for these sensitizers were then systematically investigated. It is found that the sensitizers have similar photophysical and electrochemical properties, such as absorption spectra and energy levels, owing to their close chemical structures. However, the quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on the two types of sensitizers exhibit very different performance parameters. Upon the incorporation of the short ethyl group on the hexyl moiety, enhancements in both open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) and short-circuit current (J(sc)) are achieved for the quasi-solid-state DSSCs. The V(oc) gains originating from the suppression of charge recombination were quantitatively investigated and are in good agreement with the experimentally observed V(oc) enhancements. Therefore, an enhanced solar energy conversion efficiency (η) of 6.16%, constituting an increase by 23%, is achieved under standard AM 1.5 sunlight without the use of coadsorbant agents for the quasi-solid-state DSSC based on sensitizer FNE40, which bears the branched alkyl group, in comparison with that based on FNE38 carrying the linear alkyl group. This work presents a design concept for considering the crucial importance of the branched alkyl substituent in novel metal-free organic sensitizers.

Abstract:Three dithiafulvene-based metal -free organic sensitizers all using pyridine as the acceptor but with different pi-bridges of phenyl (DTF-Pyl), thienyl (DTF-Py2) and phenyl-thienyl (DTF-Py3) have been designed, synthesized and used as photosensitizers for dye -sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Introducing thienyl unit into the pi-bridge, as well as extension of the it -bridge can dramatically improve their light harvesting ability and suppress the electron recombination, thus uplifting the performance of DSCs. The overall power conversion efficiency of DSC based on DTF-Py3 shows the highest efficiency of 2.61% with a short-circuit photocurrent density of 7.99 mA cm(-2), an open -circuit photovoltage of 630 mV, and a fill factor of 0.52, under standard global AM 1.5 solar light condition. Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional ability to convert solar energy into electricity at a relatively low cost. Novel organic photosensitizers (FZB1-FZB9) from the pyrazine-based aromatic dye (E)-3-(5-(2,3-bis(40-(diphenylamino)-[1,10-biphenyl]-4-yl)-7 (trifluoromethyl)quinoxalin-5-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2-cyanoacrylic acid (TPPF) have been quantum chemically modeled for their application in dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO 2 solar cells (DSSCs). The electrochemical and photovoltaic features of modeled dyes are investigated by performing DFT insights, i.e. FMOs, absorption maxima, DOS, TDM, NBO, exciton and binding energy, radiative lifetime analysis (ꚍ), electron-injection (Δ Ginject) and regeneration analysis ( ΔGdyeregen )@TiO 2 . FMO analysis confirmed the better electron injection as HOMO of designed dyes was found to be more positive than redox potential I/I 3 (-4.8 eV), and the LUMO appeared more negative than the conduction band of TiO 2 (-4.0 eV). The modeled photosensitizers exhibited red shift λ max from 338-494 nm with a lower energy gap from 5.62 eV in FZB (R) to 5.17 eV in FZB9. Bridging modification reduces the exciton and binding energy for designed dye FZB9 and FZB7 compared to reference FZB. The designed dyes appeared with a lower radiative lifetime of up to 1.32 than the reference dye of 1.63, better light harvesting efficiency (LHE), and the highest NBO charge on bridges of designed photosensitizers for enhanced light emitting efficiency. The investigated dyes exhibited more negative values for electron injection, i.e. −0.003 and the highest values of dye regeneration (ΔGregedyeregen) up to 11.717, which unveils innovative and effective injection of electrons toward semiconductor TiO 2 . Among all dyes, FZB8 proved best with the novel bridging modification that enables quick charge transfer as exhibited the lowest gap (5.17 eV), lowest excitation energy, better LHE, highest charge on LUMO and more negative electron injection (Δ Ginject). The outcomes of this computational study confirmed that this research established a new benchmark for achieving novel and efficient photosensitizers, thus recommending them for future DSSC applications.

Molecular Engineering of Dithiafulvene Organic Sensitizers with Pyridine Acceptor for High Efficiency Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) organic compounds have drawn keen interests as photosensitizers in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Recent studies showed that pyridine ring as an electron-withdrawing anchoring group could lead to efficient electron injection. To improve the performance of pyridine containing sensitizers based DSSCs, the electron donor, π-bridge and the whole structure should be well engineered at molecular level. In this work, we prepared two monomer type dithiafulvene based sensitizers both with a pyridine acceptor but differing in the phenyl-thienyl (DTFPy3) and thienyl-phenyl π-bridges (DTFPy4), and two corresponding dimeric congeners D-DTFPy3 and D-DTFPy4, and tested them in DSSCs. It was found that the arrangement of the electron-rich thienyl group adjacent to the electron donor moiety in the π-bridge red-shifted in the absorption, and the dimeric sensitizers exhibited significantly enhanced absorption. Among them, D-DTFPy4 garnered the highest light harvesting efficiency, yielding an overall power conversion efficiency up to 5.26%.
Tuning the Energy Level of Organic Sensitizers for High-Performance Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Cost-effective organic sensitizers will play a pivotal role in the future large-scale production and application of dye-sensitized solar cells. Here we report two new organic D-pi-A dyes featuring electron-rich 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene- and 2,2'-bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-conjugated linkers, showing a remarkable red-shifting of photocurrent action spectra compared with their thiophene and bithiophene counterparts. On the basis of the 3-f{5'-[N,N-bis(9,9-dimethylfluorene-2-yl)phenyl]-2,2'-bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-5-yl}2-cyanoacrylic acid dye, we have set a new efficiency record of 7.6% for solvent-free dye-sensitized solar cells based on metal-free organic sensitizers. Importantly, the cell exhibits an excellent stability, keeping over 92% of its initial efficiency after 1000 h accelerated tests under full sunlight soaking at 60 degrees C. This achievement will considerably encourage further design and exploration of metal-free organic dyes for higher performance dye-sensitized solar cells. We have also scrutinized the physical origins of the relatively low photocurrent and photovoltage obtained with an ionic liquid electrolyte compared to a volatile acetonitrile-based electrolyte through transient and modulated photoelectrical measurements.
High performance organic sensitizers based on 11,12-bis(hexyloxy) dibenzo[a,c]phenazine for dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:Three new metal-free organic sensitizers containing 11,12-bis(hexyloxy) dibenzo[a,c]phenazine (BPz) units were synthesized and used for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The broad absorption spectra indicate that the light harvesting abilities were enhanced by the introduction of the BPz unit in the pi-conjugated space, which can also cause an anti-aggregation effect and the suppression of charge recombination. Among these sensitizers, LI-39 showed the best photovoltaic performance: a short-circuit photocurrent density (J(sc)) of 14.40 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit photovoltage (V-oc) of 0.74 V, and a fill factor (ff) of 0.67, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 7.18% under standard global AM 1.5 solar light conditions. The result shows that the organic sensitizers based on this bulky fused aromatic rings as well as the auxiliary acceptor are the promising candidates for improvement of the performance of DSSCs.

Abstract:A series of organic dyes (POZ-2, POZ-3, POZ-4 and POZ-5) involving phenoxazine were synthesized as sensitizers for application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). For comparison, three different electron donors namely 10-phenyl-10H-phe-nothiazine, 10-phenyl-10H-phenoxazine and triphenylamine were separately appended onto the 7-position of the model dye (POZ-2). The obtained four dyes exhibit considerably high values of conversion efficiencies of 6.6%, 7.8%, 7.1% and 6.4%, respectively, under the simulated AM1.5G conditions. The geometries of the dyes were optimized to gain insight into the molecular structure and electron distribution, and then the charge extraction and transient photovoltage decay measurements were further performed to understand the influence of electron donors on the photovoltaic behaviors.

Abstract:AbstractDye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on CuII/I bipyridyl or phenanthroline complexes as redox shuttles have achieved very high open‐circuit voltages (VOC, more than 1 V). However, their short‐circuit photocurrent density (JSC) has remained modest. Increasing the JSC is expected to extend the spectral response of sensitizers to the red or NIR region while maintaining efficient electron injection in the mesoscopic TiO2 film and fast regeneration by the CuI complex. Herein, we report two new D‐A‐π‐A‐featured sensitizers termed HY63 and HY64, which employ benzothiadiazole (BT) or phenanthrene‐fused‐quinoxaline (PFQ), respectively, as the auxiliary electron‐withdrawing acceptor moiety. Despite their very similar energy levels and absorption onsets, HY64‐based DSSCs outperform their HY63 counterparts, achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.5 %. PFQ is superior to BT in reducing charge recombination resulting in the near‐quantitative collection of photogenerated charge carriers.
