Abstract:This study combines the radiation transfer process with the thermodynamic second law to achieve more accurate results for the energy quality and its variability in the spectral radiation transfer process. First, the core ideas of the monochromatic photon exergy theory based on the equivalent temperature and the infinite-staged Carnot model are reviewed and discussed. Next, this theory is combined with the radiation transfer equation and thus the spectral radiative entropy and the radiative exergy transfer equations are established and verified based on the second law of thermodynamics. Finally, one-dimensional furnace case calculations are performed to determine the applicability to engineering applications. It is found that the distribution and variability of the spectral radiative exergy flux in the radiation transfer process can be obtained using numerical calculations and the scatter media could slightly improve the proportion of short-wavelength radiative exergy during the radiation transfer process. This has application value for research on flame energy spectrum-splitting conversion systems.

Abstract:In this study, the spectral radiation characteristics of gaseous media during oxy-fuel combustion are investigated using the heat transfer method from the perspective of energy quality and utilization. Based on the gas radiation model and radiation thermodynamic theory, the effects of different parameters on the spectral radiation proportion and total radiation flux are investigated in one-dimensional furnace cases, including the temperature, pressure, and molar ratio. Based on the results of radiative energy and exergy, a model was established to predict the spectral radiative exergy characteristics of gas flame in furnace. It is found that temperature is the dominant influencing factor. At a flame average temperature of 1600 K, the proportion of spectral radiation in the waveband of 0-2 mu m accounts for 26.8%. The high-temperature and short-wavelength spectral radiation has a high exergy-to-energy ratio. Increases in the total pressure and molar ratio increase the total radiative energy, exergy, and short-wavelength radiation ratio, whereas the total pressure has less effect when the pressure is greater than 5 bar. The proposed model for predicting radiative exergy has an error of only about 1% within the flame temperature range. This study provides a reference for future research on the frequency-splitting cascade utilization and management of radiation energy in fuel combustion. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
A numerical study of counterflow diffusion flames of methane/air at various pressures

Abstract:numerical study of the counterflow diffusion flames of methane/air at both subcritical and supercritical pressures, which have very important applications in the air-breathing rocket and advanced gas turbine engines, is conducted to obtain fundamental understanding of the flame characteristics. The analysis is based on a general mathematical formulation and accommodates a unified treatment of general fluids thermodynamics and accurate calculations of thermophysical properties. Results reveal that the maximum flame temperature occurs on the fuel-rich side for low-pressure conditions and shifts toward the stoichiometric position when the pressure increases. The maximum flame temperature increases with an increasing pressure, but decreases with an increasing strain rate. The flame width is inversely proportional to the square root of the product of the pressure and strain rate as δ∝ 1/ . -√(p · a) . The total heat release rate varies with the pressure and strain rate in a relationship of ( Q release √( p·a ) 0.518 . An increased pressure leads to a slightly more complete combustion process near the stoichiometric position, but its effect on NO production is minor. Under the test conditions, variations of the strain rate have significant impacts on the formation of major pollutants. An increased strain rate leads to the decreased mole fraction of CO in the fuel-rich region and significantly reduced NO near the stoichiometric position.

Abstract:Radiation from a fire usually plays a dominant role in its spread and may pose a significant threat to the surrounding environment. In this paper, flame evolution characteristics and the radiation behavior of low-momentum jet flames affected by cross airflow is investigated by varying the cross-airflow velocity and jet exit velocity. As the results show, the flame length increases at first, and then decreases with the increase of cross airflow. In addition, increased cross airflow causes the flame's inclined angle to gradually increase, while its width decreases. A model considering cross airflow velocity and fuel jet velocity is proposed for the prediction of radiation distribution. Furthermore, it has been found that the radiation flux downstream of the fire source increases at first, and then begins to decrease with the gradual increase in cross airflow velocity. Finally, an inclined cylindrical flame model is proposed to predict the radiation flux of a low-momentum jet flame under the effect of cross airflow, and a further model of flame radiation fraction considering cross airflow velocity and jet momentum is developed. These findings may provide some reference for the design of safer gas storage and transportation facilities.

Effects of Reactant Injection Conditions on Diffusion Combustion of Natural Gas in a Laboratory-scale Combustor

Abstract:This paper reports a numerical study on MILD (moderate or intense low-oxygen dilution) diffusion combustion generated by a parallel jet burner firing natural gas (NG) in a laboratory-scale furnace. The main objective is to investigate by RANS-modelling the dependence of MILD combustion on the fuel-air injection momentum ratio (Gf /Ga) and their separation distance (S). To realize this, we examine various parameters including air preheat temperature (Ta), air equivalence ratio (φ ), air exit diameter (Da), fuel exit diameter (Df), fraction of inert gas for fuel dilution ( f ), and separation between fuel and air exits (S). This selection is based on the fact that Gf /Ga is dependent on the first five parameters but independent of S. Present simulations find that the variation of each parameter indicated above can considerably influence the fuel jet penetration, an important distance for establishing MILD combustion. However, S and Df are the most effective factors controlling the flame performance and stability characteristics. It is also revealed that the stability limit for the MILD combustion may vary with different combustor systems. For several reference cases, the present calculations are in good agreement with previous measurements of Szego et al. (Combust. Flame 2008, 154, 281-295).
Microgravity Burner-Generated Spherical Diffusion Flames: Experiment and Computation

Abstract:Microgravity experiments were conducted in the 2.2-s drop-tower facility at the NASA Glenn Research Center to study the transient response of the burner-generated spherical diffusion flame caused by its initial displacement from the steady-state position. The experiment involved issuing H-2/CH4/inert mixtures of constant fuel mass flow rates from a bronze, porous, 1.27-cm-diameter, spherical burner into atmospheric air. The experimental results on the flame trajectory were found to agree well with those obtained through fully transient computational simulation with detailed chemistry and transport, and appropriate initial conditions. Furthermore, although steady-state behavior should exist for such flames, the experimental and computational results indicated that it cannot be reached within the 2.2-s microgravity duration for the fuels and mass-flow rates tested.To assess the role of radiation on the flame dynamics and extinction, computations were performed without radiation, with radiation employing the optically thin approximation, and with radiation utilizing a detailed emission/absorption statistical narrow band (SNB) model. The computation showed that while the influence of radiative heat loss on the position of the flame is small, proper consideration of radiative effects is crucial in assessing the state of flame extinction. Specifically, while all simulations of the experimental cases studied incorporating radiative heat loss revealed that the flame extinguishes well before the attainment of steady state, simulations accounting for gaseous reabsorption of radiative emissions were required to adequately represent the experiments in terms of extinction time, with the optically thin simulations predicting premature extinction during the flame expansion process. Effects of heat loss to the porous burner were also examined, and the lack of correspondence between the visible flame luminosity and flame strength, as related to flame temperature and heat release rate, was noted. Effects of Radiative Loss on Premixed Planar Flame Propagation

Abstract:Radiation is an important factor in fires. It can greatly affect large-scale flame propagation occurring in fire or explosion accidents, e.g., the flame propagating in a tunnel in the mining industry. In this study, theoretical analysis is conducted for the premixed planar flame propagation in an infinitely large domain with radiative loss. The emphasis is on the radiation-induced flow and its influence on flame propagation speed. Based on the assumptions of one-step chemistry, quasi-steady flame propagation and linear heat loss, expressions describing the change of laminar burning flux, flame propagation speed, and flame temperature with the flame position are derived. Analytical expression for flow speed is also obtained. The analytical results quantify the radiation-induced thermal and flow effects on small and large scale premixed flame propagation. It is found that the laminar burning flux and flame temperature are only affected by the radiation-induced thermal effect, while the influence on flame propagation speed is sequentially dominated by the radiation-induced thermal and flow effects. Furthermore, the theoretical results are validated by transient numerical simulations considering detailed chemistry and quartic radiative loss. Both theoretical and numerical results indicate that in fire or explosion accidents, the large-scale premixed flame propagation could be decelerated by the radiation-induced flow effect by a factor of the expansion ratio.

Abstract:In this paper, from the viewpoints of both the first and the second law of thermodynamics, we conduct a comprehensive study on hydrogen-air counter-flow diffusion combustion in various modes. The effects of air inlet temperature (Toxi) and effective equivalence ratio of fuel (φ) on the reaction zone structure and entropy generation of combustion are revealed over a wide range of Toxi and φ. Through the present work, five interesting features of combustion of this kind, which are quite different from that reported in the literature, are presented. Especially, for the first time we divide various combustion modes in the φ − Toxi map instead of the popular way used in previous studies. Such innovation can help judge the final combustion regime more straightforwardly for any given operative condition.
Structure and Extinction of Diffusion Flames with Flame Radiation

Abstract:Using droplet combustion as a model problem, and capitalizing on the temperature-sensitive nature of radiative heat transfer, the structure and extinction of diffusion flames with flame radiation is studied via multi-scale activation energy asymptotics. The flame structure analyzed consists of an O(∈) reaction zone embedded within an O(δ) radiation zone which in turn is situated in the O(1) diffusive-convective flow field, where ∈≪δ≪1. The analysis yields the structure equation for the reaction zone, which can be cast in the same form as that of Liñán's adiabatic diffusion flame problem such that his extinction results can be readily used. Present results show that radiative heat loss promotes flame extinction in general, as expected. Furthermore, it can also lead to the phenomenon of dual extinction turning points in which flame extinction due to reactant leakage and thereby kinetic limitation occurs not only for sufficiently small droplets, as is well established, but also for sufficiently large droplets as a result of excessive heat loss from the correspondingly large flame. Consequently there exist diffusive-reactive-radiative systems for which steady combustion is not possible for all droplet sizes. An estimation of the dimensional radiative extinction droplet size is also given for the sample system studied.

Abstract:A two-dimensional axisymmetric RANS numerical model was used to examine the impact of thermal radiation using air stream radiation model on the generation of CO 2 , NO, H 2 O, O 2 and soot in turbulent methane diffusion flame. The extended Zeldovich mechanism and two transport equation models, respectively, were used to forecast the CO 2 , NO, H 2 O, O 2 and soot concentrations, while the turbulence-combustion interaction in the flame field was modeled in a k-ε/EDM framework. The projected spatial temperature gradients and published experimental data had a respectable level of agreement. It was discerned that the concentration of CH 4 has major impact on temperature, CO 2 , NO, H 2 O, O 2 and soot concentrations. The CO 2 , and H 2 O content increases as complete combustion is achieved due to adequate level oxygen at mid-section leading higher temperature generation and high NO generation. It was discovered that the flame production of NO and soot is significantly reduced when temperature is reduced using P1 radiation as opposed to the DO radiation model. By illustrating the spatial distribution of the NO content in the flame, such a phenomenon is addressed. Additionally, it was discovered that the temperature was related to a discernible decrease in soot generation. It was discovered that both models viz., P1 and DO, showed a similar trend that could be used for the predication of numerous ignition parameters.

An Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Dilution, Pressure and Flow-Field Effects on the Extinction Condition of Methane-Air-nitrogen Diffusion Flames

Abstract:Velocity fields, and extinction conditions for methane-air diffusion flames are measured for an opposed-flow nozzle-type burner system and calculated by a numerical-integration, routine for pressures from 0.25 to 2.5 atm and for dilutions having fixed stoichiometric mixture fractions with oxidizer-stream oxygen mass fractions from 0.233 to 0.190. Imposition of boundary conditions ranging from potential flow to plug flow reveals that changes on the order of a factor of two in the oxidizer-side strain rate at extinction can be produced by changes in opposed-flow burner design. It is shown that the maximum velocity gradient, however which occurs on the fuel side of the main reaction zone, achieves a value at extinction that is relatively insensitive to the boundary conditions of the flow. The results explain differences found by different investigators on influences of dilution on extinction strain rates and show that most counterflow burners are closer to the plug-flow limit than to the potential-flow limit. Strain rates at extinction without dilution are shown to increase with increasing pressure over the above-stated range, countrary to previously observed behaviors with dilution or at very high pressures. This behavior is explained as a consequence of decreasing peak radical concentration with increasing pressure.

Abstract:This work investigates numerically the effects of spectral dependent radiation on laminar flame speed determination using spherically propagating CH4/air and H2/air flames with CO/CO2/H2O dilutions at elevated pressures. Three different models, adiabatic, optically thin radiation, and fitted statistically narrow band correlated k (FSNB-CK) models, are employed. The effects of radiation-induced negative burned gas velocity, increased density ratio, and chamber confinement induced flow compression are investigated. It is found that compared to the FSNB-CK model, the adiabatic flame model over-predicts the flame speed by 7% and the optically thin model makes more significant under-prediction. Moreover, this discrepancy increases with pressure. The results also show that a large negative velocity in the burned gas is induced by radiative heat loss and magnified further by the flow compression in a small combustion chamber. The radiation-induced negative burned gas velocity causes an under-estimation of flame speed. Moreover, radiation also increases the density ratio between the burned and the unburned gases. The use of the density ratio of adiabatic flame also causes under-prediction of flame speed. Two radiation corrections taking into account of the negative burned gas velocity and the increased density ratio are recommended for flame speed determination using propagating spherical flame for radiative mixtures. The corrections proposed in this study reduce the uncertainty of flame speed due to radiation.
Studies of Radiation Absorption on Flame Speed and Flammability Limit of CO2 Diluted Methane Flames at Elevated Pressures

Abstract:The effects of spectral radiation absorption on the flame speed at normal and elevated pressures were experimentally and numerically investigated using the CO2 diluted outwardly propagating CH4–O2–He flames. Experimentally, the laminar burning velocities of CH4–O2–He–CO2 mixtures at both normal and elevated pressures (up to 5atm) were measured by using a pressure-release type spherical bomb. The results showed that radiation absorption with CO2 addition increases the flame speed and extends the flammability limit. In addition, it was also shown that the increase of pressure augments the effect of radiation absorption. Computationally, a fitted statistical narrow-band correlated-k (FSNB-CK) model was developed and validated for accurate radiation prediction in spherical geometry. This new radiation scheme was integrated to the compressible flow solver developed to simulate outwardly propagating spherical flames. The comparison between experiment and computation showed a very good agreement. The results showed that the flame geometry have a significant impact on radiation absorption and that the one-dimensional planar radiation model was not valid for the computation of the flame speed of a spherical flame. An effective Boltzmann number is extracted from numerical simulation. Furthermore, the FSNB-CK model was compared with the grey band SNB model. It was shown that the grey band SNB model over-predicts the radiation absorption. It is concluded that quantitative prediction of flame speed and flammability limit of CO2 diluted flame requires accurate spectral dependent radiation model.
Extinction of Counterflow Diffusion Flames with Radiative Heat Loss and Nonunity Lewis Numbers

Abstract:The structure and extinction characteristics of counterflow diffusion flames with flame radiation and nonunity Lewis numbers of the fuel and oxidant are examined using multiscale asymptotic theory, and a model expressed in terms of the jump relations and reactant leakages with the proper consideration of the excess enthalpy overlooked in previous analyses is developed. The existence of the dual extinction limits in the presence of radiative heat loss, namely the kinetic limit at small Damköhler number (high stretch rate) and the radiative limit at large Damköhler number (low stretch rate), are identified. It is found that the former is minimally affected by radiative loss, while a substantial amount of heat loss is associated with the radiative limit. Reactant leakage, however, is the root cause for both limits. The influence of radiative loss on the extinction Damköhler numbers is found to be through its effects on the flame temperature, the excess enthalpy, and the reduced extinction Damköhler number. At both extinction limits, the contribution from the flame temperature is always important and dominant. The contributions from the other two, however, could be important in some special cases. At small LeF, the contribution from the reduced extinction Damköhler number is large and even dominant under small radiative loss. The contribution from the excess enthalpy is important for small LeO and it may be comparable to the contribution from the flame temperature when radiative loss is small. Thus, overlooking the excess enthalpy in previous analyses may have resulted in rather large error in the predicted extinction Damköhler numbers, especially the kinetic one.
Buoyancy Effect on Extinction Limits in Low Strain Rate Counterflow Diffusion Flames of Methane

Abstract:The buoyancy effect on the extinction limits of diluted methane/air counterflow diffusion flames are investigated experimentally at low strain rates, where the radiation heat loss and buoyancy effect play significant roles in flame extinction. Three curtain flow conditions (without, with He and N2 curtains) are tested to analyze the buoyancy effect by burnt gas. Considering a strategy of counterflow diffusion flame extinction by fuel dilution, He, N2, and CO2 are used as fuel diluents. The result shows that the He curtain flow could effectively minimize the buoyancy effect at low strain rate under the normal gravity, such that it could simulate the microgravity condition. The measured maximum temperature Tf of this simulated microgravity flames with He curtain decreases with decreasing strain rate, and the rank of Tf for various fuel dilutions is N2 > He > CO2. Three flow controlling regimes are identified as momentum-controlled, transition, and buoyancy-controlled regimes depending on the strain rate, based on the flame structure, temperature profile, and calculated Richardson number for the three curtain flow conditions. The magnitude of the buoyancy at very low strain rates under the normal gravity is characterized considering a buoyancy-induced strain rate ab, such that the 1-g experimental data can be corrected to a corresponding microgravity data. These could provide a guideline to 1-g experiment in simulating microgravity experiment. The very low strain flame extinction mechanism is further analyzed, considering the radiation loss fraction, which increases to a considerable level at very low strain rate, and CO2 dilution enhances the radiation effect on flame extinction.
Effects of Finite-Rate Droplet Evaporation on the Extinction of Spherical Burner-Stabilized Diffusion Flames

Abstract:Multistate asymptotic analysis is conducted for spherical burner-stabilized spray diffusion flames with finite-rate droplet evaporation and nonunity Lewis number. The radiative heat loss is considered and the effects of radiation on flame extinction are examined. The structure function of the spray diffusion flame is derived, based on which the effects of finite-rate droplet evaporation on flame radius, flame temperature, and kinetic and radiative extinction limits are assessed. The flame is found to be affected by droplet evaporation in two ways: (1) the latent heat absorbed for droplet evaporation reduces the flame temperature; and (2) the decrease in the flame radius results in the decrease in radiative loss and residence time. For a given the mass flow rate, only the conventional kinetic extinction limit at low reaction Damkohler number exists. The extinction Damkohler number increases with the radiation intensity and it is significantly affected by droplet evaporation. It is found that at higher radiation intensity, the spray flame with the lower vaporization Damkohler number is relatively more difficult to be extinguished than the purely gaseous flame. When the reaction intensity is fixed and the mass flow rate varies, there exists two extinction limits: a kinetic extinction limit at a low-flow rate and a radiative extinction limit at a high-flow rate. Steady burning only exists between these two extinction limits. The flammable zone is shown to be greatly affected by droplet evaporation and is very sensitive to Lewis number. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Several studies have found that microgravity diffusion flames with sufficient heat loss cool until they extinguish at a critical temperature near 1130 K. In this work, the associated chemical kinetics are explored for spherical diffusion flames burning ethylene. The flames are simulated with a transient numerical model with detailed chemistry, transport, and radiation. This incorporates the UCSD mechanism with 57 species and 270 reactions. Species concentrations, reaction rates, and heat release rates are examined. Upon ignition, the peak temperature is above 2000 K, but this decreases until extinction due to radiative losses. This allows the chemistry to be studied over a wide range of peak temperatures for the same fuel and oxidiser. When the peak temperature is high, the dominant chemistry is similar to that for typical normal-gravity ethylene diffusion flames. There are two distinct zones: an ethylene pyrolysis zone and an oxidation zone, and negligible reactant leakage. The ethylene mainly reacts with H and OH. The concentration of OH in the ethylene pyrolysis zone is high due to the long residence times and reactions of CO 2 and H 2 O with H. As the flame cools and the peak temperature approaches the critical extinction temperature, there is increased reactant leakage leading to higher O, OH, and HO 2 concentrations on the fuel side. Most reactions shift towards the oxidiser side and there is large overlap between the two zones. Reactions involving HO 2 become more significant and the large consumption rates of H by HO 2 increase the concentrations of OH and O on the fuel side. The appearance of warm flame chemistry delays extinction but is not sufficiently exothermic to prevent it.

Scaling Law of Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics in Turbulent Radiative Rayleigh-Bénard Convection of Optically Thick Media

Abstract:Radiative natural convection is of vital importance in the process of energy storage, power generation, and thermal storage technology. As the attenuation coefficients of many heat transfer media in these fields are high enough to be considered as optically thick media, like nanofluids or molten salts in concentrated solar power or phase change thermal storage, Rosseland approximation is commonly used. In this paper, we delve into the impact of thermal radiation on the Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection. Theoretical analysis has been conducted by modifying the Grossmann-Lohse (GL) model. Based on turbulent dissipation theory, the corresponding scaling laws in four main regimes are proposed. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) was also performed, revealing that radiation exerts a notable influence on both flow and heat transfer, particularly on the formation of large-scale circulation. By comparing with DNS results, it is found that due to the presence of radiation, the modified Nu scaling law in small Pr range of the GL model is more suitable for predicting the transport characteristics of optical thick media with large Pr. The maximum deviation between the results of DNS and prediction model is about 10%, suggesting the summarized scaling law can effectively predict the Nu of radiative RB convection.

Abstract:An experimental system with regenerative sections at both ends was conducted to analyze the combustion characteristics of low calorific premixed gases(equivalence ratio0.4)in a reciprocal flow porous media combustor.Temperature fluctuation,axial temperature distribution and flammability limits were investigated.Results show that the flame position directly influences the temperature fluctuation of exhaust gases;Adding regenerative sections leads to the reduction of temperature fluctuation amplitude in ceramic foam;the shape of axial temperature distribution has continuous changes,from saddle-shaped,ladder-shaped,oval-shaped to triangle-shaped when the system reaches flammability limit as the equivalence ratio decreases.The average temperature of high temperature zone rises and the temperature of exhaust gases falls by adding the regenerative sections.The flammability limit is closely related to half-period,inlet velocity and heat load.The flammability limit can be extended to the low equivalence ratio of 0.1.

Abstract:Fundamental combustion phenomena and the associated flame structures in laminar gaseous flows are discussed on physical bases within the framework of the three nondimensional parameters of interest to heat and mass transfer in chemically-reacting flows, namely the Damköhler number, the Lewis number, and the Arrhenius number which is the ratio of the reaction activation energy to the characteristic thermal energy. The model problems selected for illustration are droplet combustion, boundary layer combustion, and the propagation, flammability, and stability of premixed flames. Fundamental concepts discussed include the flame structures for large activation energy reactions, S-curve interpretation of the ignition and extinction states, reaction-induced local-similarity and non-similarity in boundary layer flows, the origin and removal of the cold boundary difficulty in modeling flame propagation, and effects of flame stretch and preferential diffusion on flame extinction and stability. Analytical techniques introduced include the Shvab-Zeldovich formulation, the local Shvad-Zeldovich formulation, flame-sheet approximation and the associated jump formulation, and large activation energy matched asymptotic analysis. Potentially promising research areas are suggested.
