Abstract:Distributed strain sensing is a newly-developed fiber optic monitoring technology that shows apparent advantages over conventional technologies for slope monitoring. To verify the effectiveness of this technology for slope stability evaluation, a model test of soil nailed slope was conducted in laboratory and the Pulse-PrePump Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Analysis (PPP-BOTDA) technology has been used to measure the horizontal strain distributions at different depths of the slope model. A special tight-buffering optical fiber packaged by heat-shrinkage tubes was buried in the slope mass and served as fully distributed strain sensors. During surcharge loading on the slope crest, the strain monitoring results were recorded using a BOTDA interrogator. It was indicated that deformations were accumulated within the soil mass and a slip surface gradually formed during loading. Based on the averaged maximum horizontal strains, the slope stability condition can be evaluated approximately. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
