Abstract:The excitation wavelength for all-optical modulation of a 10.6 mu m mid-infrared (MIR) quantum cascade laser (QCL) was varied in order to obtain maximum modulation depth. Both amplitude and wavelength modulation experiments were conducted at 820 nm and 1550 nm excitation respectively, whereby the latter matches the interband transition in the QCL active region. Experimental results show that for continuous-wave mode-operated QCL, the efficiency of free carrier generation is doubled under 1550 nm excitation compared with 820 nm excitation, resulting in an increase of the amplitude modulation index from 19% to 36%. At the same time, the maximum wavelength shift is more than doubled from 1.05 nm to 2.80 nm. Furthermore, for the first time to our knowledge, we demonstrated the optical switching of a QCL operated in pulse mode by simple variation of the excitation wavelength. Abstract:Based on the nature of ultra-fast carrier life time in semiconductor quantum well, optical modulation of quantum cascade laser offers an unique way to control intersubband transition through interband transition. This method circumvents the problem of parasitic effects associated with electrical modulation, resulting in a high modulation bandwidth. In addition it allows for fast wavelength modulation on standard type quantum cascade lasers by directly injecting charge carriers to laser active region with near-infrared optical excitation. Here, we demonstrate the first infrared spectroscopic measurement conducted with this all-optical modulation approach. Using wavelength modulation spectroscopy, a 1st order derivative spectrum of methanol vapor gas is observed. Optically based wavelength modulation up to 200 MHz is purely induced by pumping the front facet of quantum cascade laser with an intensity-modulated 1550 nm DFB laser. Compared with conventional direct absorption approach, the noise equivalent sensitivity is improved by a factor of 10 by adding optical modulation in a non-optimized system.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:Achieving high-fidelity control of quantum systems is of fundamental importance in physics, chemistry and quantum information sciences. However, the successful implementation of a high-fidelity quantum control scheme also requires robustness against control field fluctuations. Here, we demonstrate a robust optimization method for control of quantum systems by optimizing the spectral phase of an ultrafast laser pulse, which is accomplished in the framework of frequency domain quantum optimal control theory. By incorporating a filtering function of frequency into the optimization algorithm, our numerical simulations in an abstract two-level quantum system as well as in a three-level atomic rubidium show that the optimization procedure can be enforced to search optimal solutions while achieving remarkable robustness against the control field fluctuations, providing an efficient approach to optimize the spectral phase of the ultrafast laser pulse to achieve a desired final quantum state of the system.

Abstract:We report the first directly modulated single-mode tunable quantum dot lasers at 1.3 pm. 27-channel wavelength switching was achieved with side-mode-suppression-ratio of around 35 dB without requiring nonuniform gratings or epitaxial regrowth.

Abstract:Q‐switched fiber lasers are of great interest in industrial material processing, nonlinear frequency conversion, spectroscopy etc. However, passive Q‐switching possesses drawbacks of degradation and failure of the saturable absorber and the difficulty in accurate modification of the repetition rate. To overcome these issues, active Q‐switching that can normally modulate the cavity quality‐factor by an externally‐driven Q‐switcher is in high demand. Herein, an actively Q‐switched laser with antimonene‐based all‐optical modulator is devised based on the high photo‐thermal efficiency (48%) and broadband response in antimonene. It is demonstrated that this actively modulated laser represents all‐optically tunable output parameters (e.g., output repetition rate), environmental stability, and easy synchronization. It is anticipated that this actively antimonene‐based all‐optical modulator with advantages of large modulation depth, low energy consumption, and high conversion efficiency has great potential in all‐optical information processing and pulsed laser engineering. An all‐optical, actively Q‐switched fiber laser enabled by an antimonene‐based all‐optical modulator is demonstrated by taking advantage of the high photo‐thermal efficiency and broadband response in antimonene. It is demonstrated that this actively modulated fiber laser represents all‐optically tunable output parameters, environmental stability, and easy synchronization, and has great potentials in information processing and pulsed laser.

Abstract:Active control of the amplitude and frequency of terahertz sources is an essential prerequisite for exploiting a myriad of terahertz applications in imaging, spectroscopy, and communications. Here we present a optoelectronic, external modulation technique applied to a terahertz quantum cascade laser which holds the promise of addressing a number of important challenges in this research area. A hybrid metamaterial/graphene device is implemented into an external cavity set-up allowing for optoelectronic tuning of feedback into a quantum cascade laser. We demonstrate powerful, all-electronic, control over the amplitude and frequency of the laser output. Full laser switching is performed by electrostatic gating of the metamaterial/graphene device, demonstrating a modulation depth of 100%. External control of the emission spectrum is also achieved, highlighting the flexibility of this feedback method. By taking advantage of the frequency dispersive reflectivity of the metamaterial array, different modes of the QCL output are selectively suppressed using lithographic tuning and single mode operation of the multi-mode laser is enforced. Side mode suppression is electrically modulated from ~6 dB to ~21 dB, demonstrating active, optoelectronic modulation of the laser frequency content between multi-mode and single mode operation.

Frequency combs induced by optical feedback and harmonic order tunability in quantum cascade lasers

Abstract:This study investigates the interaction between frequency combs and optical feedback effects in Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs). The theoretical analysis reveals new phenomena arising from the interplay between comb generation and feedback. By considering the bias current corresponding to free-running single mode emission, the introduction of optical feedback can trigger the generation of frequency combs, including both fundamental and harmonic combs. This presents opportunities to extend the comb region and generate harmonic frequency combs with different orders through optimization of external cavity parameters such as losses and length. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that optical feedback can selectively tune the harmonic order of a pre-existing free-running comb by adjusting the external cavity length, particularly for feedback ratios around 1%, which are readily achievable in experimental setups. Under strong feedback conditions (Acket parameter C>4.6), mixed states emerge, displaying the features of both laser and external cavity dynamics. While the study is predominantly centered on Terahertz QCLs, we have also confirmed that the described phenomena occur when utilizing mid-infrared QCL parameters. This work establishes a connection between comb technology and the utilization of optical feedback, providing new avenues for exploration and advancement in the field. In fact, the novel reported phenomena open a pathway towards new methodologies across various domains, such as design of tunable comb sources, hyperspectral imaging, multimode coherent sensing, and multi-channel communication.

Abstract:Due to intersubband transitions, the quantum cascade laser (QCL) is free of relaxations and able to work under fast modulations. In this work, the authors investigate the fast modulation properties of a continuous wave (cw) terahertz QCL emitting around 3 THz (similar to 100 mu m). Both simulation and experimental results show that the 3 dB modulation bandwidth for the device can reach 11.5 GHz and the modulation response curve is relatively flat upto similar to 16 GHz. The radio frequency (RF) injection measurements verify that around the laser threshold the inter-mode beat note interacts strongly with the RF signal and the laser can be modulated at the round trip frequency of 15.5 GHz.

Abstract:We investigate the mutiphoton process between different Bloch states in an amplitude modulated optical lattice. In the experiment, we perform the modulation with more than one frequency components, which includes a high degree of freedom and provides a flexible way to coherently control quantum states. Based on the study of single frequency modulation, we investigate the collaborative effect of different frequency components in two aspects. Through double frequency modulations, the spectrums of excitation rates for different lattice depths are measured. Moreover, interference between two separated excitation paths is shown, emphasizing the influence of modulation phases when two modulation frequencies are commensurate. Finally, we demonstrate the application of the double frequency modulation to design a large-momentum-transfer beam splitter. The beam splitter is easy in practice and would not introduce phase shift between two arms.
All-optical modulation with single-photons using electron avalanche

Abstract:The distinctive characteristics of light such as high-speed propagation, low-loss, low cross-talk and power consumption as well as quantum properties, make it uniquely suitable for various critical applications in communication, high-resolution imaging, optical computing, and emerging quantum information technologies. One limiting factor though is the weak optical nonlinearity of conventional media that poses challenges for the control and manipulation of light, especially with ultra-low, few-photon-level intensities. Notably, creating a photonic transistor working at single-photon intensities remains an outstanding challenge. In this work, we demonstrate all-optical modulation using a beam with single-photon intensity. Such low-energy control is enabled by the electron avalanche process in a semiconductor triggered by the impact ionization of charge carriers. This corresponds to achieving a nonlinear refractive index of n2~7*10^-3m^2/W, which is two orders of magnitude higher than in the best nonlinear optical media (Table S1). Our approach opens up the possibility of terahertz-speed optical switching at the single-photon level, which could enable novel photonic devices and future quantum photonic information processing and computing, fast logic gates, and beyond. Importantly, this approach could lead to industry-ready CMOS-compatible and chip-integrated optical modulation platforms operating with single photons.

Abstract:Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) facilitate compact optical frequency comb sources that operate in the mid-infrared and terahertz spectral regions, where many molecules have their fundamental absorption lines. Enhancing the optical bandwidth of these chip-sized lasers is of paramount importance to address their application in broadband high-precision spectroscopy. In this work, we provide a numerical and experimental investigation of the comb spectral width and show how it can be optimized to obtain its maximum value defined by the laser gain bandwidth. The interplay of nonoptimal values of the resonant Kerr nonlinearity and the cavity dispersion can lead to significant narrowing of the comb spectrum and reveals the best approach for dispersion compensation. The implementation of high mirror losses is shown to be favourable and results in proliferation of the comb sidemodes. Ultimately, injection locking of QCLs by modulating the laser bias around the roundtrip frequency provides a stable external knob to control the FM comb state and recover the maximum spectral width of the unlocked laser state.

Abstract:Abstract Metasurfaces have proven themselves an exotic ability to harness light at nano-scale, being important not only for classical but also for quantum optics. Dynamic manipulation of the quantum states is at the heart of quantum information processing; however, such function has been rarely realized with metasurfaces so far. Here, we report an all-optical dynamic modulation of the photonic quantum states using the nonlinear metasurface. The metasurface consists of a metallic nanostructure combined with a photoisomerizable azo layer. By tuning the plasmonic resonance through optically switching the azo molecules between their binary isomeric states, we have realized dynamic control of transmission efficiencies of orthogonally polarized photons and also the phase delay between them, thereby an entangled state was efficiently controlled. As an illustration, a quantum state distillation has been demonstrated to recover a Bell state from a non-maximally entangled one to that with fidelities higher than 98%. Our work would enrich the functions of the metasurface in the quantum world, from static to dynamic modulation, making the quantum metasurface going practical.

Abstract:An extension of the rate equation models for solid-state Raman laser is proposed and investigated with accounting for the dynamics of an acousto-optically (AO) Q-switch modulator and the effects of thermal lens provided by the pump beam. The improved model is aimed at outlining optimization strategies for wonderful laser performance with short pulse width and high peak power. A comparison between traditional intra-cavity and new couple-cavity configurations is made. The simulation results indicate that it is possible to realize an efficient sub-nanosecond coupled-cavity Raman laser by optimizing several important parameters.

Abstract:Abstract The ability to shape photon emission facilitates strong photon-mediated interactions between disparate physical systems, thereby enabling applications in quantum information processing, simulation and communication. Spectral control in solid state platforms such as color centers, rare earth ions, and quantum dots is particularly attractive for realizing such applications on-chip. Here we propose the use of frequency-modulated optical transitions for spectral engineering of single photon emission. Using a scattering-matrix formalism, we find that a two-level system, when modulated faster than its optical lifetime, can be treated as a single-photon source with a widely reconfigurable photon spectrum that is amenable to standard numerical optimization techniques. To enable the experimental demonstration of this spectral control scheme, we investigate the Stark tuning properties of the silicon vacancy in silicon carbide, a color center with promise for optical quantum information processing technologies. We find that the silicon vacancy possesses excellent spectral stability and tuning characteristics, allowing us to probe its fast modulation regime, observe the theoretically-predicted two-photon correlations, and demonstrate spectral engineering. Our results suggest that frequency modulation is a powerful technique for the generation of new light states with unprecedented control over the spectral and temporal properties of single photons.
