Abstract:We propose to insert group velocity dispersion between cascaded phase and amplitude modulation for ultraflat optical frequency comb (OFC) generation. With the dispersion, the sinusoidally varied chirp of the continuous wave light induced by phase modulation becomes linear within a relatively wide time interval. This is useful to improve the flatness of the generated OFC by directly cascaded phase and amplitude modulation. Simulation shows a flat comb of 37 tones within 0.88 dB power variation when the modulation index of the phase modulation reaches 20. An ultraflat comb generator with 10 GHz frequency spacing is also demonstrated. The flatness of the 15 tones around the center wavelength has been improved to 0.98 dB. Abstract:We propose a novel photonic harmonic mixer operating at frequencies up to the millimeter-wave (MMW) band. By combining a broadband fiber-wireless signal with high-order harmonics of a fundamental local oscillator in an optical frequency comb generator, frequency down-conversion can be implemented without using a costly ultra-broadband photodiode. It is theoretically shown that the down-conversion efficiency and the bandwidth of the mixer is highly dependent on the optical modulation indices and the fundamental frequency of comb lines. Down-conversion of a W-band (75-110 GHz) fiber-wireless signal is experimentally demonstrated. Moreover, the error vector magnitude (EVM) performance of a multigigabit quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal at 62.5-, 82.5-, and 102.5-GHz carrier frequencies is studied to evaluate the down-conversion efficiency. The proposed photonic harmonic mixer can be a candidate for applications in high capacity fiber-wireless communication systems.

Abstract:Photonic approaches for generating and transmitting dual-chirp waveforms has been extensively studied recently. In this paper, a simplified scheme to generate and transmit dual-chirp waveforms with elimination of the dispersion-induced power fading is proposed. An integrated dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) which consists of two sub-MZMs and a phase shifter (PS) is utilized. We apply an unmodulated microwave signal as well as a baseband chirped waveform to two RF ports of DPMZM respectively, in which carrier-suppressed modulations are implemented. Then we control the PS to suppress the power fading introduced by fiber transmission. Thanks to the use of DPMZM and convenient adjustment of a direct current (DC) voltage applied to PS, the proposed scheme owns a simple structure under the condition that it can produce dual-chirp waveforms with anti-chromatic dispersion transmission. Both theoretical derivation and experimental verification are performed. In the experiments, dual-chirp waveforms centered at 14 GHz and 20 GHz with a bandwidth of 1 GHz are successfully generated and transmitted through a roll of 20 km and 10 km single-mode fibers with elimination of power fading effects. The waveform power is increased by 8.2 dB, compared with those suffering from the power fading. Different DC voltages of 2.635 V and 6.877 V are set, respectively. Since the DC voltage that determines the phase shift is related to the fiber length and signal frequency, their relationships are demonstrated experimentally. The instantaneous bandwidth limitation of the dual-chirp waveform is discussed. The feasibility of the dual-chirp waveform transmitter for one-to-multi-transmission is also discussed.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple and cost-effective ultra-flat optical frequency comb (OFC) generator by directly modulating a standalone dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) with only one radio frequency (RF) signal without any other assisting devices. Five-and seven-tone OFC with exactly the same intensity can be theoretically generated using two sets of parameters obtained by solving equations derived from the DP-MZM modulation model. Abstract:Photonic generation of chirped RF signal based on frequency-to-time mapping (FTM) is investigated in this paper. A new criterion on system parameters (dispersion amounts and pulse duration) for the generation of well-shaped linearly chirped signals is given, which is proved to be less restrictive than the currently known conditions. Therefore, requirement on the dispersion amount can be relaxed, which is highly desired in practical implementation of the FTM-based system. Theoretical results are presented, the correctness of which is verified by numerical and experimental results. The reported theory is a good guidance in designing the photonic system for the generation of chirped signals based on FTM.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple scheme to generate flattened optical subcarriers at low insertion loss using only phase modulators driven by fundamental frequency sinusoidal sources. A small frequency offset is introduced in the second stage to obtain phase-insensitive, stable, and flattened subcarriers. Theoretical and numerical analysis with experimental results are carried out on this scheme. Twenty-one stable comb tones with 25 GHz frequency spacing are obtained with power difference less than 3 dB. The good bit-error-ratio performance of 160.8 Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying signal carried by one selected subcarrier clearly demonstrates the feasibility of this comb generation scheme. Abstract:A scheme using one intensity modulator and two phase modulators driven directly by sinusoidal waveform to generate an optical-frequency comb (OFC) is experimentally demonstrated. It is relatively simple, where Bragg grating or specially tailored waveforms are not used. By setting the ratio of direct-current bias to half-wave voltage and phase shifts between sinusoidal waveform applied on the intensity and two phase modulators at appropriate values, 29 comb lines with spectral power variation less than 1.5 dB at 10 GHz are obtained. And the scheme has adjustability; a flat-top OFC with frequency spacing of 9.5-10 GHz is achieved.

Abstract:Optical frequency comb (OFC) generated using cascaded intensity and phase modulators was experimentally demonstrated. Very flat OFC can be achieved by cascading intensity and phase modulators driven directly by sinusoidal waveform, where chirped fiber Bragg grating or specially tailored radio frequency waveforms are not required. It is found that the spectral flatness of OFC is related to direct current (DC) bias of intensity modulator and the optimum ratio of DC bias to half-wave voltage is 0.35. In the experiment, 15 comb lines within 1 dB spectral power variation are obtained at 10 GHz microwave frequency. The experimental results agree well with the simulation.

Abstract:A 25-line flattened optical frequency comb (OFC) is generated by cascading Mach-Zehnder modulators, and its coherent beating properties are investigated. The effect of bias voltages and the power of radio frequency signals on the flatness of the OFC, and the phase relationships between each comb line are theoretically deduced. In the experiment, a 25-line OFC with a flatness of less than 1 dB and an optical sideband suppression ratio of 12 dB is successfully demonstrated, and the agreement between simulation and experimental results supports the validity of the model for analysis of the flatness. The measured amplitude of harmonic signals by coherent beating of the generated 25-line OFC matches well with the theoretical prediction. A phase noise of -105.31dBc/Hz at 10 kHz frequency offset for the 12th harmonic signal almost without phase noise degradation proves the high coherence of the generated OFC lines.

Abstract:A tunable ultraflat optical frequency comb generator based on the optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By incorporating a tunable DPMZM-OEO, five comb lines were generated with frequency spacing from 5 to 12 GHz under a wide central wavelength tuning from 1530 to 1560 nm, and a comb flatness of 0.3 dB is obtained. The corresponding signal generated by the DPMZM-OEO is also measured, and the phase noise of the frequency tunable signals is as low as -125 dBc/Hz at 10-kHz frequency offset. Abstract:In this letter, signal frequency chirp due to nonlinear dispersion in a photonic time-stretch system is analyzed, and a correction method is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A time-dependent frequency transfer function is derived for the first time, which can be taken as an instruction for the correction of signal frequency chirp in a digital domain. The numerical simulation shows the proposed correction method applicable to both the single-tone signal and broadband signal transmissions. The experimental result proves that the demodulated signal quality of a transmitted QPSK signal is significantly improved after the correction of signal frequency chirp in the digital domain.

Abstract:The remarkable frequency stability of resonant systems in the optical domain (optical cavities and atomic transitions) can be harnessed at frequency scales accessible by electronics using optical frequency division. This capability is revolutionizing technologies spanning time keeping to high-performance electrical signal sources. A version of the technique called 2-point optical frequency division (2P-OFD) is proving advantageous for application to high-performance signal sources. In 2P-OFD, an optical cavity anchors two spectral endpoints defined by lines of a frequency comb. The comb need not be self-referenced, which greatly simplifies the system architecture and reduces power requirements. Here, a 2P-OFD microwave signal source is demonstrated with record-low phase noise using a microcomb. Key to this advance is a spectral endpoint defined by a frequency agile single-mode dispersive wave that is emitted by the microcomb soliton. Moreover, the system frequency reference is a compact all-solid-state optical cavity with a record Q-factor. The results advance integrable microcomb-based signal sources into the performance realm of much larger microwave sources.

Abstract:A scheme to generate a flat optical frequency comb (OFC) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on a directly modulated distributed feedback (DFB) laser cascaded with a polarization modulator (PolM). In the proposed scheme, the DFB laser is optically injection-locked by a tunable laser source and directly modulated by a radio frequency (RF) signal, which is amplified by a microwave power amplifier. The optical signal is then sent to PolM via a polarization controller (PC) and modulated by the amplified and phase-shifted RF signal from the same source. The optical signal is finally received and measured by an optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) after transmitting through another PC and a polarizer. Here, the OFC with their power variation within 3 dB is desired, and four OFCs with 6, 6, 5, and 4 comb lines are generated using the RF signals with different frequencies, which have a flatness of, respectively, 2.4, 2.5, 0.7, and 0.6 dB. Abstract:An optical frequency comb generation scheme using time-to-frequency conversion and optical fiber-loop modulation is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Flat-top optical pulse train from an intensity modulator is injected into a fiber loop, which includes a phase modulator and an amplifier and is cyclically modulated by the phase modulator, to generate abundant optical comb lines. A total of 110 comb lines with 3-dB spectral power variation and 10-GHz frequency spacing are obtained. The proposed scheme is relatively simple and uses only one intensity modulator and one phase modulator.

Abstract:Flat optical frequency comb (OFC) can be generated by using single phase modulator (PM), where combined harmonics are applied to drive the PM. However, the number of comb lines and flatness of OFC are limited under this scheme. In this work, we use cascaded PMs with combined harmonics to generate flat OFC. The optimized phases and modulation indices in terms of amplitudes for each harmonic are obtained by solving optimization problem to minimize the fluctuation of OFC with a certain number of comb lines. Both simulation and experiment are carried out to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed scheme. Regarding the case of combined fundamental tone, third harmonic, and fifth harmonic, a 15-line OFC is generated with the flatness of 0.29 dB and 0.65 dB observed in simulation and experiment, respectively. Other feasible solutions to flat OFC with combined harmonics are also investigated.
