Abstract:We propose an off-axis meta-lens-based optical wavelength demultiplexer. The performance of the device initially proposed with four output channels (1527 -1596 nm, channel spacing 23 nm) composed of an optical fiber array is analyzed by both scalar diffraction theory and ray tracing method. The results show that the fiber energy coupling efficiency of the demultiplexer could be larger than 89% and the channel bandwidth is about 9 nm. Influences of the two key parameters, focal length f and off-axis angle a, are also investigated. We find that the minimum spectral linewidth of the channel is inversely proportional to the sine of alpha and nearly independent of f for a meta-lens with large F-number (F > 5), while the effective spectral range is negatively (positively) dependent on alpha (f). These results are significant in guiding us to build small and compact demultiplexing devices for optical telecommunication. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:We demonstrate and investigate a simple technique to realize multichannel optical clock division by using a commercial lithium niobate-intensity modulator (LN-IM). Optical clock division is achieved by controlling the driving and dc bias voltage of the LN-IM. 20- to 10-GHz optical clock division experiments of both single and double channel are implemented to verify the performance of the proposed optical clock divider. The phase noise of the extracted 10-GHz optical clock is less than 95 dBc/Hz. The other function of this technique, demultiplexing of optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) signal is also demonstrated experimentally. Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.

Abstract:The severe band-limited effect resulted from the low-cost optical transceiver increases the channel memory length and the number of taps of the equalizers. Besides, the interaction of fiber dispersion and square-law detection introduce nonlinear distortions in intensity modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission systems. The serious band-limited effect and nonlinear distortions degrade the transmission performance and bring challenges to current equalizers for low-complexity implementation. In this paper, we propose a trellis-compression nonlinear maximum likelihood sequence estimation (TC-NL-MLSE) algorithm to compensate the linear and nonlinear distortions with lower complexity. In the TC-NL-MLSE, we introduce a polynomial nonlinear filter (PNLF) to partly compensate both the linear distortions and nonlinear distortions. Then, we establish a look-up-table (LUT) to calculate the nonlinear branch metric (BM). To simplify the calculation, two or three levels with the highest probabilities are selected according to decision thresholds for each symbol to compress the state-trellis graph (STG). This significantly reduces computational complexity on BM calculations especially for high-order modulations. We conduct experiments to transmit beyond the 200-Gb/s PAM-8 signal over 2-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) at C-band. The TC-NL-MLSE outperforms the reduced-state MLSE with PNLF, and can reach the 7%-overhead hard-decision forward error correction threshold. Moreover, the TC-NL-MLSE reduces the complexity by 97% compared with standard LUT-MLSE, limiting the multipliers around 100 at the expense of only 0.2-dB receiver sensitivity penalty.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel scheme for clock recovery and simultaneous fourfold optical time-division demultiplexing using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator based optoelectronic oscillator. 25-GHz prescaled optical clock with a 23% duty cycle and a 22-dB extinction ratio is successfully extracted from both 100-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) signal. The timing jitters (100 Hz to 10 MHz) are measured to be 195.9 fs and 125.6 fs for the optical clock extracted from the 100-Gb/s OOK and DPSK signal, respectively. Error-free optical time-division demultiplexing is also achieved simultaneously with clock recovery. By adjusting the phase shifter in the OEO loop, all four channels can be selectively demultiplexed. The power penalties at a bit error rate (BER) of 10⁻⁹ for the four demultiplexed channels are measured to be between 0.8 dB and 1.2 dB for the OOK signal and between 0.9 dB and 1.5 dB for the DPSK signal.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, energy-saving mode-division-multiplexing passive optical network (MDM-PON) scheme utilizing self-homodyne detection for high-speed/capacity access network based on low modal-crosstalk few-mode fiber (FMF) and all-fiber mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX). In the proposed scheme, one of the spatial modes is used to transmit a portion of signal carrier (namely pilot-tone) as the local oscillator (LO), while the others are used for signal-bearing channels. At the receiver, the pilot-tone and the signal can be separated without strong crosstalk and sent to the receiver for coherent detection. The spectral efficiency (SE) is significantly enhanced when multiple spatial channels are used. Meanwhile, the self-homodyne detection scheme can effectively suppress laser phase noise, which relaxes the requirement for the lasers line-width at the optical line terminal or optical network units (OLT/ONUs). The digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver is also simplified since it removes the need for frequency offset compensation and complex phase correction, which reduces the computational complexity and energy consumption. Polarization division multiplexing (PDM) that offers doubled SE is also supported by the scheme. The proposed scheme is scalable to multi-wavelength application when wavelength MUX/DEMUX is utilized. Utilizing the proposed scheme, we demonstrate a proof of concept 4 × 40-Gb/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission over 55-km FMF using low modal-crosstalk two-mode FMF and MUX/DEMUX with error free operation. Compared with back to back case, less than 1-dB Q-factor penalty is observed after 55-km FMF of the four channels. Signal power and pilot-tone power are also optimized to achieve the optimal transmission performance.

Abstract:An all optical demultiplexing experiment using a semiconductor laser amplifier in a loop mirror from 4×2.5GHz optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) was reported. The principle of demultiplexer was discussed and illustrated. The schematic diagram of all optical demultiplexing was given. The results show that demultiplexed signals with good extinction ratio (10dB) can be achieved under switching window with 70ps.

Abstract:As the broadband applications continue rising, the solutions of high-speed passive optical network (PON) with large power budget are highly desired. Direct detection scheme combined with digital signal procession (DSP) has been considered as a promising candidate due to its low cost, low power consumption and simple architecture. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate 200 Gbs and 240 Gbs time division multiplexed passive optical network (TDM-PON) downstream transmissions based on four-level pulsed amplitude (PAM-4) modulation with direct detection in O-band. A high bandwidth thin film lithium niobate modulator is adopted to generate high Baudrate optical signal at the optical line terminal (OLT) side. A pre-amplified semiconductor optical amplifier SOA is employed at the optical network unit (ONU) side to improve the power budget. Several DSP algorithms are studied to compensate the linear and nonlinear distortions. We also propose a simplified Volterra nonlinear equalizer (S-VNLE) to reduce the computational complexity. Considering the soft-decision FEC (SD-FEC) threshold (1 102), over 29 dB and 28 dB power budgets are achieved respectively for 200 Gbs and 240 Gbs PON system after 20 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) based on our proposed S-VNLE.

Abstract:Directly-modulated laser (DML) is widely employed in intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) system due to its low cost and high output power. However, the corresponding frequency chirp is regarded as one of the main disadvantages for its application in passive optical networks (PONs). In this paper, we theoretically analyze the frequency response evolution of DML based system under different chirp and dispersion conditions, proving that the system bandwidth can be improved by interactions between negative dispersion and DML chirp. Based on this concept, we experimentally demonstrated downstream 50 Gb/s PAM4 signal transmission over 20 km single-mode fiber (SMF) access based on the 10 Gb/s DML operating at 1310 nm and avalanche photodiode (APD). A dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) providing -150 ps/nm dispersion at 1310 nm in the optical line terminal (OLT) is used to pre-equalize the frequency response of bandwidth-limited directly modulated signals in the optical domain. Thanks to our proposed dispersion-supported equalization (DSE) technique, the system bandwidth can be improved by 5 GHz. Feed-forward equalization (FFE), decision feedback equalization (DFE) and Volterra filter are employed to evaluate the signal performance improvement, respectively. By evaluating the receiver sensitivity, the DSE combined with FFE scheme shows 2 dB improvement than the complex Volterra algorithm, indicating its potential to reduce the complexity of digital signal processing (DSP) and therefore a lower cost and power consumption in PON.

The wavelength of the input signal pulses is converted for demultiplexing with a mode-locked figure-eight laser as clock extraction unit. Abstract:Recently, orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing has attracted much attention for providing an exponential growth in optical fiber capacity. As an irreplaceable component to promote long-haul OAM mode fiber transmission system, the on-line OAM mode-multiplexed fiber amplifier need to be developed. In this paper, we propose a Gaussian-like erbium doping distribution design method for ring-core erbium doped fiber (RC-EDF) to optimize the differential modal gain (DMG), which can reduce the fabrication complexity of the fiber preform. With a good match with original design, the fabricated RC-EDF was characterized by all the supporting four OAM modes ($vert l vert$ = 1, 2, 3, 4) multiplexed amplification, which achieves an ultra-low DMG less than 0.3 dB at 1550 nm. The gain is above 15 dB and DMG is less than 1.2 dB for four OAM modes across the C-band under a 500 mW pump power. As a proof for transmission, 32 channels (8 wavelengths 4 OAM modes) carrying 32-Gbaud quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) OAM modes multiplexed-WDM transmission over the OAM-EDFA is demonstrated. The proposed OAM-EDFA with the average OSNR penalties of 0.34 dB may promote the practical implementation for the long-haul OAM modes fiber transmission system.
