Abstract:The groundwater table impacts the water dynamics and consumption with a critical groundwater table depth needed to maintain growth of a riparian forest in arid regions. The HYDRUS-1D software was used to simulate water flow in the groundwater-soil-plant-atmosphere-continuum (GSPAC) in the riparian forest along the Irtysh River. The simulation results show that the actual evapotranspiration decreases with the groundwater level. The groundwater table depth at which the evapotranspiration ratio reaches 70% 10 days a month was defined as the critical groundwater table depth. The critical groundwater table depths for each month from April to October are 6.2 m, 4.2 m, 2.8 m, 3.5 m, 9.5 m, 12.2 m and 8.3 m, respectively.
