Abstract:To provide a basis for urban afforestation of water conservation in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area,based on the observation data of rainfall and runoff process during 2002-2005,the authors studied the runoff generation characteristics of the four typical forests on three time scales in Jinyun Mountain,Chongqing City.The results show that,1) Rainfall process distributed evenly during 2002-2005.Relative change rate of annual rainfall was 4.46% and variation coefficient was(0.061 8.) Average monthly rainfall agreed with the normal distribution.2) Both precipitation and runoff periods were obviously divided into dry season and wet season.Dry season was from October to the next March and wet season was during April to September.Most runoff volume of four forests came from the wet season.Among them,surface runoff accounted for over 85% and underground flow over 75%.3) The peak values of surface runoff and underground runoff occurred in June.The relation between monthly rainfall and surface runoff or underground runoff was performed by the unary quadratic equation.The order of annual surface runoff was given as follows: bamboo forest >shrub forest >mixed forest >broadleaved forest.The annual underground runoff was broadleaved forest >mixed forest >bamboo forest >shrub forest.4) Under the same rainstorm events,the order of the surface runoff coefficient was broadleaved forest <mixed forest <shrub forest <bamboo forest,and the underground runoff coefficient was broadleaved forest >mixed forest >bamboo forest >shrub forest.The relation between rainstorms and surface runoff or underground runoff was performed well by linear relationship.5) Both mixed forest and broadleaved forest had the better effects on flood regulation on time scales of year,month and rainstorms.The function of bamboo forest was the worst on three time scales.

Abstract:In order to provide a basis for water conservation in the restoration of vegetation for an urban water resource area, we studied the generation of runoff characteristics in four typical forests over three time periods in Jinyun Mountain, Chongqing City, based on the observation data of rainfall and runoff processes during the period 2002–2005. The results show that: 1) Rainfall was distributed evenly during the years 2002–2005. Annual rainfall variability was 4.46% and coefficient of variation was 0.0618. Average monthly rainfall tended towards a normal distribution N (113.8, 45972). 2) Both precipitation and runoff can be clearly divided into a dry and a wet season. The dry season was from October to March and the wet season from April to September. Most of annual runoff of the four forest stands occurred in the wet season. The surface runoff in the wet season accounted for more than 85% of the annual runoff, and more than 75% of underground runoff. 3) Both peak values of surface runoff and underground runoff occurred in June. The relation between monthly rainfall and surface/underground runoff was fitted by the model W=aP 2 + bP + c. The order of annual surface runoff was as follows: Phyllostachys pubescens forest > shrub forest > mixed Pinus massoniana-broadleaf forest > evergreen broad-leaved forest. The annual underground runoff was evergreen broad-leaved forest > mixed Pinus massoniana-broadleaf forest > Phyllostachys pubescens forest > shrub forest. 4) Under similar rainstorms events, the order of the surface runoff coefficient was: evergreen broad-leaved forest < mixed Pinus massoniana-broadleaf forest < shrub forest < Phyllostachys pubescens forest. The underground runoff coefficient was: evergreen broad-leaved forest > mixed Pinus massoniana-broadleaf forest > Phyllostachys pubescens forest > shrub forest. The relation between rainstorms and surface runoff was fitted by the linear relationship: Q = mp − n. Both mixed Pinus massoniana-broadleaf forest and evergreen broad-leaved forest have better flood regulation effects on an annual and monthly basis and per individual rainstorm. The function of Phyllostachys pubescens forest is the worst on all three bases.
Effects of thinning and understory removal on the soil water-holding capacity in Pinus massoniana plantations

Abstract:Abstract Forest management practices play an important role in regulating the soil water-holding capacity of plantation. However, most studies focus on soil water dynamics present during large-scale forest loss and afforestation events, while little is known about how soil water under different forest management practices responds to rainfall events and which factors mainly regulate soil water-holding capacity. In this study, a stable hydrogen isotope was used to explore the contribution of three natural rainfall events (8.9, 13.3 and 67.7 mm) to soil water (CRSW) in a Pinus massoniana plantation under four forest management practices (no thinning (NTN), understory removal (USR), light-intensity thinning (LIT) and heavy-intensity thinning (HIT)) in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area of the Yangtze River Basin in China. Furthermore, a structural equation model was employed to determine the effects of vegetation biomass and soil properties on the CRSW. The results showed that plantation soil under different forest management practices exhibited different water-holding capacities. Following light (8.9 mm) and moderate (13.3 mm) rainfall events, the CRSW in the HIT stand was slightly higher than that in the other stands. Following heavy (66.7 mm) rainfall event, the CRSW of most layers in USR stand was not different from the other three stands, while the CRSW in the LIT and NTN stands was significantly higher than that in the HIT stand in the 0–100 cm soil layers, suggesting that soil in the LIT and NTN stands had a greater water-holding capacity than that in the HIT stand. In addition, soil properties were the main factors directly affecting the CRSW, explaining 60% and 37% of the variation in the CRSW on the first and seventh days after heavy rainfall, respectively. Overall, compared to the HIT stand, the LIT and NTN stands showed greater capacity in retaining rainwater. Therefore, under expected global changes with frequent occurrences of extreme precipitation events, methods involving light-intensity and no thinning should be employed to build up soil and water conservation functions, which will be critical for keeping water-holding capacity and moderating floods.

Abstract:Forest management practices play an important role in soil water conservation. However, the soil water-holding capacity and associated drivers under different management practices remain uncertain, especially when the precipitation varies substantially at the regional scale. Here, we used hydrogen stable isotope to explore the contribution of rainfall to soil water (CRSW) under light, moderate and heavy precipitation in Pinus massoniana plantations with multiple management practices (pure stand, mixed stand, understory removal, light-intensity thinning and high-intensity thinning) in subtropical China. We further used variation partitioning analysis and structural equation modeling to identify the dominant driver affecting CRSW. Our results showed that after light rainfall, the highest CRSW (28.7%) was found in the high-intensity thinning plantation. However, after heavy rainfall, the high-intensity thinning plantation received the lowest CRSW (43.3%), while the mixed stand showed the highest CRSW (67.1%). These results demonstrated that the mixed stand of P. massoniana had a stronger capacity for soil water conservation, whereas high-intensity thinning showed poorer capacity. Furthermore, our results revealed that plant properties (i.e., tree, root and litter biomass) were the dominant controls of the CRSW under light rainfall, while soil properties (i.e., bulk density, total porosity, field capacity) were the primary drivers under moderate and heavy rainfall, indicating that the determinants influencing plantation capacity for intercepting rainfall vary with different levels of precipitation. These results highlight the importance of the level of precipitation in determining the dominant driver of CRSW. More importantly, these results suggest that the mixed stand, rather than high-intensity thinning, was better forest management since the former has a higher capacity for intercepting heavy rainfall.

Abstract:The climate-induced changes in soil water patterns pose a serious threat to subtropical plantations. Mixed species stands have been advocated as an efficient way to enhance ecosystem stability. However, little is known about their possible impact on the soil water-holding capacity in the subtropics. In this study, we employed a stable hydrogen isotope to assess the contribution of rainfall to soil water (CRSW) in a pure Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantation and in two mixtures of Chinese fir with Cinnamomum camphora or with Alnus cremastogyne after three different magnitudes of rainfall events in subtropical China. Furthermore, we used structure equation modeling (SEM) to quantify the relative importance of vegetation and soil properties on the CRSW. The results indicated that the CRSW did not differ among these three Chinese fir plantations after light rainfall, whereas the CRSW of moderate and heavy rainfall to soil water were 15.95% and 26.06% higher in Chinese fir plantation with Cinnamomum camphora, and 22.67% and 22.93% higher in Chinese fir plantation with Alnus cremastogyne than that in the pure Chinese fir plantation, respectively. SEM analysis showed that the vegetation biomass and soil properties significantly affected the CRSW following light rainfall, but the soil properties were the most important factors influencing the CRSW under moderate and heavy rainfall. Our findings demonstrate that the mixed conifer–broad-leaved plantation is a more effective strategy for improving the soil water-holding capacity than the pure conifer plantation in subtropical regions, which is conducive to coping with the frequent seasonal droughts and extreme precipitation events.

Abstract:Rainfall is an indispensable link in the atmospheric water cycle, which plays a critical role in forest hydrology. Quercus acutissima and Cunninghamia lanceolata are two fast-growing and economically important tree species in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. They are extensively applied in the restoration of vegetation, hydraulic engineering, and the development of artificial forests. The primary aims of this study were to describe and compare the changes in soil water content following rainfall events, while elucidating their relationships to environmental factors. From September 2012 to August 2013, we monitored the soil moisture at different depths every 30 min using commercially available soil moisture measuring devices. Hourly meteorological data were monitored over an open area at 200 m from the sample site, including photosynthetically active radiation (Par), air temperature (Ta), relative air humidity (RH), vapor pressure deficits (Vpd), rainfall, and wind speed. The results revealed that variations in the soil moisture content during summer (Cv = 0.231) and autumn (Cv = 0.0.170) were greater than during spring (Cv = 0.0.092) and winter (Cv = 0.0.055), with those in the deep soil moisture (Cv = 0.117) being smaller. The soil moisture content was significantly altered following the cessation of rainfall, where the initial and average moisture content, and the ACR of the soil increased with higher rainfall intensities. The ACR was positively correlated with Ta (γ = 0.16), RH (γ = 0.46) and rainfall (γ = 0.22), but negatively correlated with Par (γ = −0.29), Vpd (γ = −0.23), and wind speed (γ = −0.01). This study provides valuable information regarding the hydrological processes of artificial forests in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Abstract:Rainfall is one of the core components of the water cycle in terrestrial ecosystems and is closely related to hydrothermal balance, plant and animal growth, and stability of the whole ecosystem. Long-duration rainstorms can alter the soil structure of forest ecosystems and affect the spatial distribution of soil moisture, thus affecting the water supply from the soil to trees and being one of the factors that increase the vulnerability of forest ecosystems. In recent years, changes in rainfall patterns have normalized prolonged heavy rainfall in the mountainous areas of North China. However, there are few reports on the response of soil water at different depths to historically long rainstorms in forested areas. By quantifying the relationship between precipitation characteristics and soil water, the soil water transport patterns of Platycladus orientalis (PO), Quercus variabilis (QV) and Pinus tabuliformis (PT) during the long-duration rainstorms of 21–22 July 2012 were evaluated separately, and the roles of different plants in response to the historically long rainstorm were determined. The results showed that (1) the response of different forest stands to rainfall had a lag. Among them, the soil water of PO and PT were less affected by rainfall and could maintain a relatively stable state. (2) The soil moisture transport trend of PO was significantly greater than that of other vegetation zones and covered the whole process of rainfall. Under the three typical vegetation covers, there was a continuous zero-flux plane in the soil at each observed depth (the direction of soil moisture flow is more stable over the rainfall period), but there was no regular transport trend. (3) The root system was an important factor, influencing the differences in soil moisture response of the three vegetation types. QV had a higher average effective water recharge rate than lateral cypress and oleander and could better utilize the water recharge from storm water.

Soil water hydraulic redistribution in a subtropical monsoon evergreen forest

Abstract:Hydraulic redistribution (HR), which is the passive movement of water through plant roots from wet to dry soil due to the water gradient, is important for plant physiology and ecohydrological processes. However, our poor knowledge on HR in the humid monsoon climate zone hampers the understanding of the interactions between vegetation and soil water during frequent droughts in evergreen forests. Thus, 5 years (2011-2015) of data, including meteorological parameters and soil moisture content at depths of 10, 30, 50, and 100 cm in soil profiles, were compared at one evergreen broad-leaved forest and at one clear-cutting forest site in south China. Analyses of soil moisture dynamics show that HR was frequently triggered within the depth of 30 cm at the evergreen broad-leaved forest, while (if any) was less visible at the clear-cutting forest site. The daily averaged magnitude of redistributed soil water reached the maximum of 0.81 mm/d. The HR mainly occurred during the monsoon dry season (i.e., from October to March of the following year), possibly indicating a different cause, i.e., asynchronous variations in rainfall and plant water use shape the seasonal patterns of soil water HR, compared to other humid zones. During the study period when HR occurred, the average daily HR in the soil profiles replenished approximately 34-50% of the water consumption in the 0-30 cm soil layer. The simulation results of a distributed hydrology-soil-vegetation model incorporating a HR scheme indicate that evapotranspiration enhanced during drought periods when HR occurred. In the future climate change context, comprehensive investigations on the water fluxes in the atmosphere-vegetation-soil continuum are needed to fully understand the effects of HR on the physiological responses of plants and on the water cycle.

Abstract:Establishing whether uptake of rainwater-recharged soil water (RRS) can increase plant transpiration in response to rainfall pulses requires an investigation to evaluate plant adaptability, especially in water-limited regions where rainwater is the only replenishable soil water source. In this study, the water sources from RRS and three soil layers, the predawn leaf water potential ( Ψ pd ), the midday leaf water potential ( Ψ m ), the gradient of leaf water potential ( Ψ pd −Ψ m ), and the plant transpiration in response to rainfall pulses were analyzed for two dominant tree species, Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis and Populus tomentosa , in pure and mixed plantations during the growing period (June–September). Mixed afforestation significantly enhanced Ψ pd −Ψ m , RRS uptake proportion (RUP), and the relative response of daily normalized sap flow (SF R ) and reduced the water source proportion from the deep soil layer (100–200 cm) for both species ( P <0.05 ). In pure and mixed plantations, the large Ψ pd −Ψ m was consistent with high SF R for H. rhamnoides and the small Ψ pd −Ψ m was consistent with low SF R for P. tomentosa in response to rainfall pulses. Therefore, H. rhamnoides and P. tomentosa exhibited anisohydric and isohydric behavior, respectively, and the former plant species was more sensitive to rainfall pulses than P. tomentosa . Furthermore, in pure plantations, the SF R was significantly affected by RUP and Ψ pd −Ψ m for H. rhamnoides and significantly influenced by Ψ pd −Ψ m for P. tomentosa ( P <0.05 ). However, the SF R was significantly influenced by RUP and Ψ pd −Ψ m for both species in the mixed plantation. These results indicate that mixed afforestation enhanced the influence of RRS uptake on plant transpiration for these different rainfall-pulse-sensitive plants. This study provides insights into suitable plantation species selection and management considering the link between RRS uptake and plant transpiration in water-limited regions.

Big-sized trees and higher species diversity improve water holding capacities of forests in northeast China

Abstract:High water-holding forests are essential for adapting to drought climates under global warming, and a central issue is which type of forests could conserve more water in the ecosystem. This paper explores how forest structure, plant diversity, and soil physics impact forest water-holding capacities. We investigated 720 sampling plots by measuring water-holding capacities from 1440 soil and litter samples, 8400 leaves, and 1680 branches and surveying 18,054 trees in total (28 species). Water-holding capacities were measured as four soil indices (Maxwc, maximum water-holding capacity; Fcwc, field water-holding capacity; Cpwc, soil capillary water-holding capacity; Ncpwc, non-capillary water-holding capacity), two litter metrics (Maxwcl, maximum water-holding capacity of litters; Ewcl, effective water-holding capacity of litters), and canopy interception (C, the sum of estimated water interception of all branches and leaves of all tree species in the plot). We found that water-holding capacity in the big-sized tree plots was 4–25 % higher in the litters, 54–64 % in the canopy, and 6–37 % in the soils than in the small-sized plots. The higher species richness increased all soil water-holding capacities compared to the lowest richness plot. Higher Simpson and Shannon-Wiener plots had 10–27 % higher Ewcl and C than the lowest plots. Bulk density had the strongest negative relations with Maxwc, Cpwc, and Fcwc, whereas field soil water content positively affected them. Soil physics, forest structure, and plant diversity explained 90.5 %, 5.9 %, and 0.2 % of the water-holding variation, respectively. Tree sizes increased C, Ncpwc, Ewcl directly ( p < 0.05), and richness increased Ewcl directly ( p < 0.05). However, the direct effects from the uniform angle index (tree distribution evenness) were balanced by their indirect effect from soil physics. Our findings highlighted that the mixed forests with big-sized trees and rich species could effectively improve the water-holding capacities of the ecosystem.

Abstract:This study compared the rainfall partitioning and canopy interception modelling in pure and mixed forests (Pinus tabuliformis, Robinia pseudoacacia, Pinus tabuliformis × Robinia pseudoacacia) widely planted on the Chinese Loess Plateau. The results showed that mixed forest could optimize rainfall partitioning compared to pure forests, but higher tree density for mixed forest intercepted more rainwater. The Revised Gash Analytical Model performed better than Liu model in estimating the interception loss for forests. Afforestation in future should adopt a reasonable density to increase rainwater replenishment to the forest floor. Rainfall partitioning is a key process in forest ecosystems that affects the forest hydrological cycle and ecological services. However, little is known about the rainfall partitioning in Pinus tabuliformis (PT), Robinia pseudoacacia (RP), and Pinus tabuliformis×Robinia pseudoacacia (PT × RP) forests, which are widely distributed on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) for controlling soil and water losses. The objectives of this study were to compare the rainfall partitioning and conduct interception modelling in PT, RP, and PT × RP forests, using data from the Ansai and Changwu sites on the CLP. The sites feature similar weather conductions and both pure and mixed forests of the same age. The tree density of PT × RP was moderate at the Ansai site but higher at the Changwu site compared to PT and RP. We quantitatively measured the throughfall (Tf), stemflow (Sf), and interception loss (Ic) for the forests at the two sites during the growing season (May–October, 2022), and simulated Ic using the Revised Gash Analytical Model (RGAM) and Liu model. The results showed that measured Ic for PT × RP (26.0% of the total gross rainfall, Pg) was larger than for RP (22.0% of Pg) but smaller than for PT (27.8% of Pg) at the Ansai site, and vice versa for the Tf and Sf (RP > PT × RP > PT), while the measured Ic for PT × RP (33.7% of Pg) at the Changwu site was larger than both for PT (31.1% of Pg) and RP (19.5% of Pg). The Tf and Sf for PT × RP was smaller than for PT and RP. Given the similar weather conditions, differences in Ic for the pure and mixed forests at each site were attributed to canopy storage capacity, wet canopy evaporation rate, and tree density. Additionally, the RGAM and the Liu model effectively simulated and captured the differences in Ic for PT, RP, and PT × RP. However, the RGAM performed better with a relative error less than −7.3%, Nash‐Sutcliffe model efficiency ranging from 0.82 to 0.95, and root mean square error less than 0.5 mm. According to the RGAM, evaporation from the wet canopy during rainfall events and after rainfall cessation were the two most influential components. The results of this study suggest that mixed forest can optimize rainfall partitioning compared to pure forests, but a reasonable density should be adopted to increase rainwater replenishment to the forest floor.

Abstract:River water plays a critical role in riparian plant water use and riparian ecosystem restoration along losing rivers (i.e., river water recharging underlying groundwater). How to quantify the contributions of river water to the transpiration of riparian plants under different groundwater levels and the related responses of plant water use efficiency is a great challenge. In this study, observations of stable isotopes of water ( δ 2 H and δ 18 O ), 222 Rn , and leaf δ 13 C were conducted for the deep-rooted riparian weeping willow ( Salix babylonica L.) in 2019 (dry year) and 2021 (wet year) along the Chaobai River in Beijing, China. We proposed an iteration method in combination with the MixSIAR model to quantify the river water contribution to the transpiration of riparian S. babylonica and its correlations with the water table depth and leaf δ 13 C . Our results demonstrated that riparian S. babylonica took up deep water (in the 80–170 cm soil layer and groundwater) by 56.5 % ± 10.8 %. River water recharging riparian deep water was an indirect water source and contributed 20.3 % of water to the transpiration of riparian trees near the losing river. Significantly increasing river water uptake (by 7.0 %) and decreasing leaf δ 13 C (by − 2.0 ‰) of riparian trees were observed as the water table depth changed from 2.7 m in the dry year of 2019 to 1.7 m in the wet year of 2021 ( p <0.05 ). The higher water availability probably promoted stomatal opening and thus increased transpiration water loss, leading to the decreasing leaf δ 13 C in the wet year compared to the dry year. The river water contribution to the transpiration of riparian S. babylonica was found to be negatively linearly correlated with the water table depth and leaf δ 13 C ( p <0.01 ). The rising groundwater level may increase the water extraction from the groundwater and/or river and produce a consumptive river-water-use pattern of riparian trees, which can have an adverse impact on the conservation of both river flow and riparian vegetation. This study provides new insights into understanding the mechanisms of the water cycle in a groundwater–soil–plant–atmosphere continuum and managing water resources and riparian afforestation along losing rivers.

Hydrological Recovery in Two Large Forested Watersheds of Southeastern China: the Importance of Watershed Properties in Determining Hydrological Responses to Reforestation

Abstract:Understanding hydrological responses to reforestation is an important subject in watershed management, particularly in large forested watersheds ( > 1000 km2). In this study, we selected two large forested watersheds (Pingjiang and Xiangshui) located in the upper reach of the Poyang Lake watershed, southeastern China (with an area of 3261.4 and 1458 km2, respectively), along with long-term data on climate and hydrology (1954–2006) to assess the effects of large-scale reforestation on streamflow. Both watersheds have similar climate and experienced comparable and dramatic forest changes during the past decades, but with different watershed properties (e.g., the topography is much steeper in Xiangshui than in Pingjiang), which provides us with a unique opportunity to compare the differences in hydrological recovery in two contrasted watersheds. Streamflow at different percentiles (e.g., 5, 10, 50 and 95 %) were compared using a combination of statistical analysis with a year-wise method for each watershed. The results showed that forest recovery had no significant effects on median flows (Q50%) in both watersheds. However, reforestation significantly reduced high flows in Pingjiang, but had limited influence in Xiangshui. Similarly, reforestation had significant and positive effects on low flows (Q95%) in Pingjiang, while it did not significantly change low flows in Xiangshui. Thus, hydrological recovery is limited and slower in the steeper Xiangshui watershed, highlighting that watershed properties are also important for determining hydrological responses to reforestation. This finding has important implications for designing reforestation and watershed management strategies in the context of hydrological recovery.

Abstract:Elucidating the seasonal patterns of water sources for dominant species in the sub-tropical humid mountainous forest, analyzing the eco-hydrological complementarity and competition mechanisms among coexisting species, investigating the responses of plant water utilization to precipitation, could provide a theoretical basis for vegetation restoration and management. Based on the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope technique, we analyzed the δ2H and δ18O characteristics of precipitation, xylem water from Pinus massoniana and Quercus variabilis, and soil water from 0-100 cm depth in Mount Lushan, China. The MixSIAR model, Levins index, and PS index were used to calculate the relative contribution rate of each water source, the hydrological niche breadth, and niche overlap of P. massoniana and Q. variabilis. The results showed that, in the wet season (March to July), P. massoniana primarily utilized soil water from the 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm depths, while Q. variabilis primarily utilized that from the 20-40 cm and 40-60 cm depths. During the dry season (August to September), P. massoniana and Q. variabilis utilized 40-60 cm and 60-80 cm of soil water, respectively, resulting in an increase in the depth of water absorption. In the early growing season (March to April) and the late growing season (September), there was a high hydrological niche overlap between P. massoniana and Q. variabilis, resulting in intensitive water competition. In the middle of the growing season (May to August), the water source was adequately allocated, and the hydrolo-gical niche was segregated to meet the high transpiration demand. Q. variabilis primarily utilized soil water from a depth of 60-80 cm and 60-80 cm before a precipitation event, and from a depth of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm after the event. In contrast, P. massoniana primarily utilized soil water from a depth of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm both before and after a precipitation event. In conclusion, water utilization patterns of P. massoniana and Q. variabilis exhibited a seasonal trend, with shallow water uptake during the rainy season and deep water uptake during the dry season. These species are capable of efficiently allocating water resources during the peak growth season, and their root systems actively respond to change in soil moisture level. They have strong adaptability to extreme precipitation events and exhibit remarkable water conservation capabilities.

Abstract:The water table in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) rose significantly since the construction of the Three Gorges Dam across the Yangtze River. Little is known about how such a change in local hydrological condition will affect the ecophysiology of plants along the bank of the world’s largest reservoir. In this study, water relations of the dominant plants were investigated over an entire year period by comparing stable isotope compositions of xylem water, leaf water potentials and foliar carbon isotope ratios at a newly-formed riparian site near the river bank and two non-riparian sites at higher elevations. The isotopic compositions of xylem water indicated that the plants in the newly-formed riparian zone acquired water mainly from the soil previously infiltrated by local rain rather than the Yangtze River water. Predawn and midday water potentials of the riparian trees were also similar to those at the non-riparian sites. Leaf δ 13 C values of plants across the three sites also showed no difference, even though there was a significant difference among species. Our results indicate that plants at the newly formed transient riparian area along the bank of TGR do not depend on the Yangtze River water for their water sources and that rising water levels in this reservoir may not lead to immediate changes in water relations of the plants along the bank.
Responses of Intra-Annual Runoff to Forest Recovery Patterns in Subtropical China

Abstract:Forest recovery plays a critical role in regulating eco-hydrological processes in forested watersheds. However, characteristics of the intra-annual runoff variation associated with different forest recovery patterns remain poorly understood. In this study, three forest change periods were identified, the baseline period (1961–1985), reforestation period (1986 − 2000) and fruit tree planting period (2001–2016). We selected the magnitude of seasonal runoff (wet and dry seasons) and distribution characteristics, i.e., non-uniformity coefficient (Cv), complete accommodation coefficient (Cr), concentration ratio (Cn), concentration period (Cd), absolute variation ratio (ΔR) and relative variation ratio (Cmax). The pair-wise approach evaluated the intra-annual runoff variation characteristics between forest change periods. Results indicate that reforestation decreased wet season runoff and increased dry season runoff. In contrast, fruit tree planting increased wet season runoff and had no significant effect on dry season runoff. For intra-annual runoff distribution characteristics, reforestation significantly reduced the Cv, Cr, Cn and Cmax. Distribution of the intra-annual runoff in the fruit tree planting period was not significantly different from the baseline. We concluded that reforestation reduced the occurance of extreme water conditions in wet and dry seasons and effectively increased the stability of the intra-annual runoff. In contrast, fruit tree planting increased instability and fluctuation of the intra-annual runoff after reforestation. The characteristics of the intra-annual runoff to fruit tree planting was similar to those of the baseline. Therefore, adopting fruit tree planting practices to regulate intra-annual runoff characteristics may not be a practical approach, and impacts of different reforestation practices should be ascertained in our study region. The implications of this study should guide regional land–water management, and this study adds to the understanding of the impacts gained in forest cover on hydrology.

Abstract:In this study, we quantified responses of stream water, groundwater and soil moisture to precipitation across the soil‐groundwater‐stream continuum. High‐frequency hydrometric data and event‐based analysis revealed smaller activation threshold (Rt and Ti) but longer peak duration (Tip) of stream responses, larger magnitude (Rm) of groundwater responses, and preferential flow from depth‐varying soil moisture responses. Short‐duration monsoon‐controlled heavy rainfall mediated the effect of vertical subsurface heterogeneity, whereas long‐duration monsoon‐controlled heavy rainfall potentially enhanced hydrologic connectivity and subsurface contribution to catchment runoff. Stream water, groundwater and soil water in the riparian zone are closely linked. Their responses to rainfall events controlled by monsoon climate are variable and intertwined, which are still not well known. To address this knowledge gap, we established a monitoring transect adjacent to a headwater stream in Huashan Catchment, eastern China, with typical monsoon climate. We monitored precipitation, stream stage, groundwater level and soil moisture content at intervals of maximum 30 min. We then conducted an event‐based analysis of rainfall event characteristics and diverse response metrics, and assessed their correlations and interrelationships through correlation and regression analysis. Our 2‐year monitoring results show that water level responses occurred in most rainfall events. They had smaller threshold of rainfall amount and timing but longer time to peak response. Stream responses exhibited smaller response magnitude and intensities than groundwater responses. Rainfall amount and event duration were the most critical driving factors for groundwater responses. Soil moisture responses varied with depth. Only large storms could propagate into topsoil and generate rapid responses. Middle soil moisture responses had more frequent response occurrence and more variable response magnitude, while deep soil moisture responses had smaller response magnitude, longer time to peak response and larger wetting front movement velocity. Attenuated initial response timing with depth identified preferential flow, reflecting heterogeneity in the soil profile. Monsoon‐controlled heavy rainfall improved hydrologic connectivity in the soil‐groundwater‐stream continuum (SGSC), mediating the influence of heterogeneity on soil moisture responses and potentially contributing more subsurface flow to catchment runoff. Overall, this study aimed to reveal the mechanism of hydrological responses to monsoon‐controlled precipitation across the SGSC.

Abstract:Afforestation to control soil erosion has been implemented throughout China over the past few decades. The long‐term hydrological effects, such as total water yield and baseflow, of this large‐scale anthropogenic activity remain unclear. Using six decades of hydrologic observations and remote sensing data, we explore the hydrological responses to forest expansion in four basins with contrasting climates across China. No significant change in runoff was found for the period 1970‐2012 for the cold and dry Hailar River Basin in northeastern China. However, both forest expansion and reduced precipitation contributed to the runoff reduction after afforestation since the late 1990s. Similarly, afforestation and drying climate since the mid‐1990s induced a significant decrease in runoff for the Weihe River Basin in semi‐arid northwestern China. In contrast, the two wet basins in the humid southern China, Ganjiang River Basin and Dongjiang River Basin, showed insignificant changes in total runoff during their study periods. However, the baseflow in the winter dry seasons in these two watersheds significantly increased since the 1950s. Our results highlight the long‐term variable effects of forest expansion and local climatic variability on basin hydrology in different climatic regions. This study suggests that landuse change in the humid study watersheds did not cause dramatic change in river flow and that region‐specific afforestation policy should be considered to deal with forestation‐water quantity trade‐off. Conclusions from this study can help improve decision‐making for ecological restoration policies and water resource management in China and other countries where intensive afforestation efforts are taking place. Abstract:Rivers play a vital role in both the formation and maintenance of riparian wetland hydrology. However, few studies have focused on the response of water recharge of riparian wetlands to altered hydrological processes induced by water-sediment regulation practices. To fill this gap, our study investigated the contribution of multi-source water recharge of riparian wetlands in the lower Yellow River, as well as its influence both during and before the water-sediment regulation scheme of Xiaolangdi Dam. Our study is based on hydrochemistry and isotopic methods, using a Bayesian mixing model and artificial neutral network model. The results showed that riparian wetlands were fed by mixed sources, including groundwater, canals, the Yellow River, and precipitation. However, seasonal evaporation introduced additional variation, which affected the relative contribution of these sources across seasons. Among these sources, the Yellow River served as the main water source for recharging riparian wetlands, and its contribution varied both spatially and temporally (across seasons). Specifically, proximity of riparian wetlands was the primary factor explaining spatial variation in the contribution of Yellow River, while climatic (12.38%) and hydrological variabilities (87.62%) explained seasonal variation. Among these climatic and hydrological variables, suspended sediment content was the most important factor—with a relative contribution of 36.33%. By determining the contribution of the Yellow River to the recharge of riparian wetlands, our study has provided information which is beneficial to adaptive management of river-fed riparian wetlands, especially under the implementation of water-sediment regulation practices.

Abstract:Water resource scarcity and uneven distribution are 2 major environmental issues in China today. Forest structure is a dominant factor that influences hydrological processes, but the specific interactions remain uncertain due to the predominant use of individual or 1‐dimensional forest structure metrics in previous studies. In this study, forest structures in 8 run‐off plots on Mount Miaofeng in north China were parameterized by metrics of different dimensionalities. The relation between canopy interception and forest structure, shrub/litter interception, and forest structure as well as run‐off and forest structure were analysed by regression method and validated by leave‐one‐out cross test. The results showed that canopy interception rates ranged from less than 0.10 all the way to 0.80, affected by forest structure and precipitation, with interception rate decreasing logarithmically as precipitation increased. Forests with a larger canopy area (CA), leaf area index (LAI), and higher average height (H) had a narrow range of canopy interception rates, and forest with larger value of diameters at breath height (DBH), H, LAI, vertical heterogeneity coefficient (T), and structure complexity index (SCI) had higher interception rates. Forests with higher value of DBH, H, and horizontal heterogeneity coefficient (R) had higher shrub/litter interception rates on the forest floor. The run‐off coefficient was only significantly associated with LAI, T, and SCI. The validation test indicated that regression analysis of canopy interception rates and shrub interception are reliable and SCI is a key factor to influence the run‐off coefficient. However, the regression results of litter interception have a relatively large error. According to the results, to reduce the risks of the landslides and floods, forest managers should complicate the canopy and preserve trees with thicker stems and larger canopies. By contrast, to obtain more water resource from run‐off in arid regions, forest managers should harvest trees with large canopies and construct complex vertical structures by intermediate cutting.
