Abstract:We propose a stacked wavelength-division-multiplexed orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-OFDM-PON) system that is capable of transmitting 10-Gb/s per wavelength downstream OFDM signals and directly modulated upstream on-off keying (OOK) signals up to 100 km without any repeater. In this scheme, we use our specially designed electronic controlled liquid tunable optical filter to simultaneously select downstream signals and process upstream signal chirp. By experiment, we demonstrate this bidirectional transmission system and achieve error-free transmission performance over different fiber distances. A power budget of 35.6 dB for 25-km fiber transmission is obtained to support 1 : 512 splitting ratios. Through 100-km fiber transmission, a 34.4-dB optical power budget with a nonrepeater is also achieved. Moreover, the effects of various system parameters such as filter profile and downstream signals' launched power, are also investigated in detail by simulation and experiment for improving system performance.

Abstract:We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

Abstract:We propose a symmetric 40-Gb/s aggregate rate time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON) system with the capability of simultaneous downstream differential phase shift keying (DPSK) signal demodulation and upstream signal chirp management based on delay interferometer (DI). With the bi-pass characteristic of DI, we experimentally demonstrate the bidirectional transmission of signals at 10-Gb/s per wavelength, and achieve negligible power penalties after 50-km single mode fiber (SMF). For the uplink transmission with DI, a similar to 11-dB optical power budget improvement at a bit error ratio of 1e-3 is obtained and the extinction ratio (ER) of signal is also improved from 3.4 dB to 13.75 dB. Owing to this high ER, the upstream burst-mode transmitting is successfully presented in term of time-division multiplexing. Moreover, in our experiment, a similar to 38-dB power budget is obtained to support 256 users with 50-km SMF transmission. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Coherent detection, high-order modulation, and dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technologies provide solutions for increasing bandwidth demand of future access networks. We experimentally demonstrate a real-time 64 x 200-Gb/s coherent ultra-dense wavelength-division (UDWDM) coherent passive optical networks (PONs) at 75-GHz channel spacing. The demonstrated downlink transmission is realized with the dual- polarization QPSK (DP-QPSK) modulation scheme. The cost is reduced by using silicon photonic integrated coherent transceiver modules and wider grid AWGs. The power budget is evaluated when all 200 channels are launched at C band. The power budget is 26 dB after 20-km G.652D standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission without amplifier at the receiver side under soft-decision FEC (SD-FEC) threshold of 1 x 10(-2) , and can achieve 32.5 dB with pre-amplified semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) used at the receiver side.

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a 60-GHz bidirectional radio-over-fiber system with downstream orthogonal frequency division multiplexing address (OFDMA) and wavelength reuse upstream single-carrier frequency division multiple address (SC-FDMA). In the downstream, a 3-dB optical coupler is used for two-carrier injection-locking a distributed feedback (DFB) laser in order to realize the single-sideband modulation. In the upstream, the weakly modulated one of the two downstream carriers is filtered out for wavelength reuse. Transmission of 9.65-Gb/s 16-QAM downstream OFDMA on 60-GHz carrier and 5-Gb/s QPSK upstream SC-FDMA (2.5 Gb/s for each user) are both successfully demonstrated over 53-km standard single mode fiber without chromatic dispersion compensation. The crosstalk between the downstream OFDMA and the upstream SC-FDMA can be neglected.

Abstract:Increasing the serial bitrate to 25-Gb/s per channel as well as coexisting with the same optical distribution network of the 10G-ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is challenging. The bandwidth limitation and the reduced dispersion tolerance at high date rate make it much more difficult to achieve higher loss budget. In this paper, we have first shown a demonstration of a symmetric 4 × 25-Gb/s time-wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network system based on nonreturn-to-zero on-off-keying format supporting 0–20 km reach in O-band. 10G-class directly modulated lasers (DMLs) are employed to serve as both upstream and downstream transmitters owing to the low cost and the frequency chirp induced by DML can be used for bandwidth equalization. Instead of using digital signal processing, the chirp management and frequency equalization are simultaneously realized in optical domain through our proposed dispersion supported equalization technique. By employing a spool of dispersion-shifted fiber in optical line terminal (OLT), a single device can be used to simultaneously equalize the frequency response of multiple downstream and upstream channels. Then, we further use a semiconductor optical amplifier as a booster and preamplifier at the OLT for downstream and upstream, respectively. A power budget of 26 and 32 dB with 0–20 km reach of standard single mode fiber for downstream and upstream transmission at 1310 nm is obtained. The experimental results shown in this paper reveal that our proposed cost-effective scheme would be a promising candidate for the next generation 100G-EPON.

Abstract:We propose a long reach double-side band (DSB) time-division-multiplexing PON architecture based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDM-OFDM-PON). To avoid severe power fading induced by chromatic dispersion for DSB long reach transmission, we adopt higher-order modulation and small guard-band between carrier and signal band. 20-Gb/s upstream long-reach DSB TDM-OFDM-PON transmission is experimentally demonstrated over 100-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), enabled by 64-QAM OFDM modulation and 0.85-GHz carrier-to-signal guard-band.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated symmetric 40Gb/s TWDM-PON with long passive reach and high power budget. Directly-modulated lasers (DMLs) are used as both downstream and upstream lasers to reduce the system cost, and optical reshaping filter is used to manage the chirp of the DMLs for all the upstream and downstream channels, enabling long distance transmission without dispersion compensation. The power budget is as high as 43 dB for 100-km passive reach, supporting 64 users.

Abstract:Time- and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON) has been selected by full service access networks as a primary solution for next generation PON stage 2 in April 2012. In this letter, we propose and demonstrate a symmetric 40-Gb/s TWDM-PON with 39-dB power budget. A reflective semiconductor optical amplifier is used in optical network unit as a pre-amplifier to enhance the sensitivity of downstream signals. For the upstream direction, a thermally-tuned directly modulated laser with 10-Gb/s modulation rate is used as upstream colorless source, and a chirp management filter is employed in optical line terminal to mitigate chromatic dispersion therefore enabling fiber transmission. Symmetric 40-Gb/s TWDM-PON is experimentally demonstrated with a power budget of 39 dB, which could support 25-km fiber transmission and 1:1000 splitting ratio.

Abstract:We demonstrate a wavelength stacked passive optical network (PON) with offset quadrature amplitude modulation based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OQAM-OFDM), which can provide 100-km single mode fiber (SMF) transmission without any inline repeater amplifier for both downlink and uplink. By experiment, we verify the feasibility of this proposed PON system for bi-directional long distance transmission especially for asynchronous upstream. Experimental result shows that, negligible power penalty is achieved even with 100-km SMF transmission, and ~3.6-dB sensitivity improvement is obtained when compared to OFDM-based asynchronous system. Besides, the performance in terms of side-lode suppression and peak to average power ratio (PAPR) are also contrastively analyzed between OFDM and OQAM-OFDM-based PON system.

Single carrier frequency domain equalization (SCFDE) technique is used to effectively combat the linear distortion. And 2×2 multiple inputs multiple outputs (MIMO) algorithm is used to remove the crosstalk between the two orthogonal polarizations. 20-Gb/s PDM-BPSK transmission over 50-km SSMF is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new structure of PON system based on coherent heterodyne receivers. The coherent detection enables a filterless ultra-dense WDM system. We simulated a 64 channel system with 10GHz channel spacing, offering symmetrical 1 Gbit/s sustained data rate per user both downlink and uplink by single fiber. The quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation format is applied to downstream data for higher spectrum efficiency, while we use Amplitude Modulation (AM) on upstream data to reduce the system cost. © 2011 IEEE.
