Abstract:A pillar[5]arene dimer was successfully prepared by co-oligomerization of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene and 1,6-bis(4-butoxyphenoxy)hexane. It was demonstrated that it forms 1:2 complexes with n-octyltrimethyl ammonium hexafluorophosphate both in chloroform and the gaseous state. A Scatchard plot indicated that the complexation between them is statistical with an average association constant of 6.0 (±0.4)×102M−1 in chloroform.

Abstract:A per-hydroxylated pillar[6]arene was prepared. Single-crystal X-ray analysis demonstrated that its molecules are arranged in an up-to-down manner to form infinite channels in the solid state. Its host-guest complexation with a series of bispyridinium salts in solution was further investigated. It was found that the per-hydroxylated pillar[6]arene could form a 1:1 complex with paraquat in acetone with an association constant of 2.2 x 10(2) M-1. This complex is a [2]pseudorotaxane as shown by its crystal structure, which is the first pillar[6]arene-based host-guest complex crystal structure.

Abstract:Water-soluble pillar[5]arenes are a class of typical macrocycles and have aroused tremendous attention for its easy to modify, abundant host-guest properties and extensive applications. However, up to now, all the reported water-soluble pillar[5]arenes acted as the host molecules, whereas they failed to be postsynthetically modified, which seriously impeded the development of the pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular chemistry. In this work, a new water-soluble pillar[5]arene, pillar[4]arene[1]quinone, was designed and synthsized with eight quaternary ammonium groups as well as a quinone units. Such a new water-soluble pillar[4]arene[1]quinone was capable of forming 1:1 stable complex with sodium 1-octanesulfonate in aqueous solution. Since the 1,4-quinone unit of WP[4]Q[1] could react with ethylenediamine (EDA) to form a conjugated quinoxaline structure, so pillar[4]arene[1]quinone could apply to the facile fluorescence turn-on sensing of EDA in aqueous solution, organic solvent and air.

Abstract:Three pillar[5]arene dimers, bridged by a flexible aliphatic chain (H1) or a relatively rigid phenylene unit (H2 and H3), were synthesized, with the possible synthetic strategies being discussed. The dimers could significantly enhance the binding affinities toward neutral model substrates in comparison with monomeric 1,4-dimethoxypillar[5]arene (H4) through the cooperative binding of two pillar[5]arene moieties. The molecular binding ability and selectivity are discussed from the viewpoints of the size/shape-fit concept and multiple recognition mechanism.

Abstract:Host-guest complexation between a pillar[5]arene with mono(ethylene oxide) substituents and paraquat was studied. We demonstrated that this pillar[5]arene can form a 1:1 complex with paraquat in solution and in the solid state. The formation of this complex was confirmed by proton NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and single crystal X-ray analysis. Furthermore, this complexation can be reversibly controlled through the sequential addition and removal of Zn powder. The host substituent effect on the complexation ability was also addressed.

Abstract:The macrocyclic family comprising pillar[ n ]arenes and cucurbit[ n ]urils have received much attention recently. However, studies on the construction of supramolecular complexes formed directly with derivatized pillar[ n ]arenes and cucurbit[ n ]urils are scant. Given the interest in such systems, herein we have synthesized a new type of naphthalene-derivatized pillar[ n ]arene NTP5 and selected Q[10] as the host molecule. The 4-[2-(1-naphthalenyl)ethenyl]pyridine of NTP5 is encapsulated by Q[10] and formed a host-guest complex in water-acetic acid (1:1) solution accompanied by enhanced fluorescence, which changed the morphology of NTP5 from a sphere to a porous form. In addition, the fluorescence of Q[10]-NTP5 can be quenched by the addition of the highly toxic pesticide paraquat (PQ), and the mechanism was shown to be the formation of a new charge transfer ternary system of Q[10]-NTP5-PQ. This work provides new ideas for the contribution of supramolecular assemblies based on derivatized pillar[ n ]arenes and their combination with cucurbit[ n ]urils and reveals their potential applications.

Abstract:The recently introduced pillar[n]arenes have provided chemists with receptors that, when incorporated into materials, confer unique properties upon them. The symmetrical rims and cylindrical shape of pillar[5]arene begs the question--can these pillar-like receptors be linked covalently end-to-end in order to create tubular structures by a growth-from-template approach? In our efforts to produce these one-dimensional extended structures, we have developed a new method of functionalizing pillar[5]arene in which one of the five hydroquinone units is converted into a diaminobenzoquinone analogue. The resulting diaminopillar[5]arene derivative, which undergoes a stereochemical inversion process that is slow on the (1)H NMR timescale, can be chemically modified yet further in a direction that is orthogonal to the plane of its methylene bridging carbons through the formation of oxazole heterocycles. This strategy has been employed to create rigid oligomers that resemble one-dimensional tubular arrays. As a proof-of-principle, a rigid pillar[5]arene dimer has been isolated and characterized in the solution state as a 1:1 complex with an extended viologen for which it acts as a receptor.

Abstract:The method for the synthesis of bi-functionalized pillar[5]arenes with amino and ester groups or amino and carboxylic group has been developed. The conformation of the functional group of the pillar[5]arene was investigated by using H-1 NMR and X-Ray experiments. The intramolecular hydrogen bonding induces the side-chain of the pillar[5]arene to introvert. And thus, the amino group points to the inside cavity of the pillar[5]arene backbone. The position of the amino group is adjustable by using alkyl chains with different length.

Abstract:A six-cyclic crown ether-type pillar[5]arene was synthesized, and the five ethylene oxide loops were located outside the cavity and not affected by temperature changes which was confirmed by variable-temperature NMR experiment in DMSO-d6 and CDCl3 and 2D 1H-1H NOESY experiment in CDCl3. The six-cyclic pillar[5]-crown also showed greater binding ability of host-guest with bis(pyridinium) derivatives than conventional alkoxy pillar[5]arenes that illustrated through 1H NMR titration spectroscopic experiment in acetone-d6/CDCl3 (1 : 1) and UV-vis titration experiments in CHCl3 at room temperature. The five benzocrown ethers at the periphery were able to bind metal cations by 1H NMR titration spectroscopic experiment in CD2Cl2/methanol-d4(9 : 1).

Abstract:Macrocyclic molecules have characteristic properties different from linear ones, such as high symmetry and guest-inclusion ability. To bring drastic changes to these properties, direct introduction of many substituents is a challenging but effective tool. Herein, we attain direct installation of ten six-membered-ring aromatic π-units into both rims of a pillar[5]arene. In contrast to previous pillar[n]arenes with less hindered five-membered-ring units, which showed conformational complexity and crushed crystal structures, the per-phenyl-substituted pillar[5]arene has a cylinder-shaped crystal structure with a dichloromethane inside the cavity and is obtained as a single pair of D5-symmetric enantiomers. The average dihedral angles between core and peripheral benzene rings sharply increase from 38° to 66°. These differences indicate the importance of local steric repulsion on both rims for determining the structures and properties of macrocycles.

Abstract:An AB-type heteroditopic monomer was prepared by incorporating a dialkylammonium salt into a copillar[5]arene prepared from the co-oligomerization of 1-(10-bromodecyloxy)-4-methoxybenzene and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene. Based on the self-assembly of this new monomer in chloroform, a linear supramolecular polymer formed. The formation of the supramolecular polymer was characterized by various techniques including H-1 NMR, NOESY, DOSY, specific viscosity and SEM. This supramolecular polymer was anion responsive, since the self-assembly of the monomers could be destroyed by the addition of chloride anions. This study provides an efficient and convenient strategy to control the formation of supramolecular polymers.

Abstract:A pillar[5]arene prepared from monomer 1 has four constitutional isomers. Although these constitutional isomers have the same molecular formula, their other properties that we have investigated are more or less different. They have different melting points, different NMR spectra and different crystal structures. Furthermore, the corresponding four anionic constitutional pillar[5]arene isomers derived from these four constitutional isomers showed different binding abilities with paraquat G in water. The association constants of 3aG, 3bG, 3cG and 3dG were determined to be (3.33 +/- 0.46)x10(4) Lmol(-1), (5.00 +/- 0.63)x10(4) Lmol(-1), (3.33 +/- 0.28)x10(4) Lmol(-1), and (1.43 +/- 0.09)x10(4) Lmol(-1), respectively.

Abstract:A symmetric pillararene-based receptor containing ten triazole units was synthesized. Interestingly, it formed 1:1 complexes instead of 1:2 with different halide anions. This was caused by the cooperative multivalent hydrogen-bond interactions between the triazole protons on one side of the receptor and the halide anion, which changed its structure from pillar to conical.
