Abstract:A pillar[5]arene[1]quinone and a difunctionalized pillar[6]arene were synthesized. Their application in hostguest chemistry was investigated by using 1-adamantanylammonium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate (3), which possesses a weakly coordinating counteranion, as a model guest. Abstract:The first synthesis of pillar[7]arene is reported with two methods. Method A: the FeCl3-catalyzed condensation reaction of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (1) with paraformaldehyde in CHCl3 gave dimethoxypillar[7]arene (3). Method B: the p-toluenesulfonic acid catalyzed condensation reaction of 2,5-bis(benzyloxymethyl)-1,4-dimethoxybenzene (2) in CH2Cl2 gave compound 3. Demethylation of 3 with BBr3 gave pillar[7]arene (4). The pillar[7]arene might be a perspective macrocyclic host in host–guest chemistry.

Abstract:In this work, a novel version of macrocyclic arenes, namely leaning pillar[6]arenes, was discovered and it can be considered as a tilted version of a pillar[6]arene with two hydroxy/alkoxy functionalities removed. Through a facile two-step synthetic approaches, in conjunction with a diversity of post-modification possibilities, a series of leaning pillar[6]arenes, with good cavity adaptability and enhanced guest-binding capability, was synthesized, and their self-assembly in single-crystal states is presented. DFT calculations demonstrated that the lower rotational barrier of unsubstituted phenylene rings, the uneven electron density centered at the leaning phenyl rings, and the polarization effect along the edge generated by the hydrogen-bond-induced orientation of hydroxy groups greatly affected the host-guest properties, and meanwhile provided an intuitive explanation for the pillar-like and rigid structure of traditional pillar[6]arenes. Significantly, the crystal structure of cyclo-oligomeric quinone was obtained by direct oxidation of leaning pillar[6]arenes.

Abstract:Supramolecular interactions such as π-π stacking interaction and charge transfer interaction have drawn much attention in the design and construction of various supramolecular assemblies. Herein, partially oxidized pillar[5]arene (P5A), pillar[4]arene[1]quinone (P4A1Q), pillar[3]arene[2]quinone (P3A2Q), and pillar[2]arene[3]quinone (P2A3Q) were synthesized by one-step reaction. As indicated by experimental characterization data and density function theory modeling results, charge transfer interaction among partially oxidized P5A plays a significant role in host-host self-assembly behavior and corresponding packing morphology. This work provides a unique strategy for the construction of functional macrocyclic assemblies through host-host self-assembly.

Abstract:Several new chiral pillar[4]arene[1]quinone derivatives were synthesized by reacting pillar[4]arene[1]quinone (EtP4Q1), containing four 1,4-diethoxybenzene units and one benzoquinone unit, with various chiral amines via Michael addition. Due to the direct introduction of chiral substituents on the rim of pillar[n]arene and the close location of the chiral center to the rim of EtP4Q1, the newly prepared compounds showed unique chiroptical properties without complicated chiral resolution processes, and unprecedented high anisotropy factor of up to −0.018 at the charge transfer absorption band was observed. Intriguingly, the benzene sidearm attached pillar[4]arene[1]quinone derivative 1a showed solvent- and complexation-driven chirality inversion. This work provides a promising potential for absolute asymmetric synthesis of pillararene-based derivatives.

Abstract:A multihydroquinone ether dialdehyde derivative 2 was incidentally obtained through an unexpected ring opening of pillar[4]arene[1]quinone 1. And the Prato reaction of 2 with [60]fullerene led to [60]fullerene bisadducts, from which trans-4 cyclic regioisomer 3 was isolated and characterized. The fulleropillar[4]arene 3 showed a larger cavity and can accommodate a viologen derivative C12V2+ with a much stronger affinity than permethyl pillar[5]arene (MP5) and pillar[4]arene[1]-quinone 1.

Abstract:The method for the synthesis of bi-functionalized pillar[5]arenes with amino and ester groups or amino and carboxylic group has been developed. The conformation of the functional group of the pillar[5]arene was investigated by using H-1 NMR and X-Ray experiments. The intramolecular hydrogen bonding induces the side-chain of the pillar[5]arene to introvert. And thus, the amino group points to the inside cavity of the pillar[5]arene backbone. The position of the amino group is adjustable by using alkyl chains with different length.

Abstract:A pillar[5]arene dimer was successfully prepared by co-oligomerization of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene and 1,6-bis(4-butoxyphenoxy)hexane. It was demonstrated that it forms 1:2 complexes with n-octyltrimethyl ammonium hexafluorophosphate both in chloroform and the gaseous state. A Scatchard plot indicated that the complexation between them is statistical with an average association constant of 6.0 (±0.4)×102M−1 in chloroform.

Abstract:A detailed study of the reaction conditions revealed that a quantitative cyclocondensation of 1,4-dialkoxy-2,5-bis(alkoxymethyl)-benzenes to pillar[n]arenes can be achieved by catalysis of p-toluenesulfonic acid in CH2Cl2. Major product of this new reaction is in each case a cyclopentamer (n = 5), but small amounts of the pillar[n]arenes with n = 6, 7 and 10 can be obtained as well. Different alkoxy groups in 1- and 4-position lead to regioisomers. All cyclooligomers exist in pillar structures as pair of enantiomers, which show a racemisation at room temperature, which is fast in terms of the NMR time scale. The racemisation process occurs by rotation of the 1,4-phenylene segments in the macrocyclic rings. Pillar[n]arenes exhibit novel host–guest behavior.

Abstract:Pillar[n]quinones and pillar[n-m]arene[m]quinones are oxidation products of pillar[n]arenes. Their molecular structure resembles the parent compounds. However, their map of electron density is different. Each 1,4-benzoquinone ring, which replaces a 1,4-dialkoxy-substituted benzene ring decreases the electron density in the interior cavity and increases the electron density on the upper and lower rim of the pillar. The electron donor character is stepwise transformed to an electron acceptor status. This effect alters the complexation tendencies, which are the most interesting properties of these macrocyclic host systems.

Abstract:Water-soluble pillar[5]arenes are a class of typical macrocycles and have aroused tremendous attention for its easy to modify, abundant host-guest properties and extensive applications. However, up to now, all the reported water-soluble pillar[5]arenes acted as the host molecules, whereas they failed to be postsynthetically modified, which seriously impeded the development of the pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular chemistry. In this work, a new water-soluble pillar[5]arene, pillar[4]arene[1]quinone, was designed and synthsized with eight quaternary ammonium groups as well as a quinone units. Such a new water-soluble pillar[4]arene[1]quinone was capable of forming 1:1 stable complex with sodium 1-octanesulfonate in aqueous solution. Since the 1,4-quinone unit of WP[4]Q[1] could react with ethylenediamine (EDA) to form a conjugated quinoxaline structure, so pillar[4]arene[1]quinone could apply to the facile fluorescence turn-on sensing of EDA in aqueous solution, organic solvent and air.

Abstract:The recently introduced pillar[n]arenes have provided chemists with receptors that, when incorporated into materials, confer unique properties upon them. The symmetrical rims and cylindrical shape of pillar[5]arene begs the question--can these pillar-like receptors be linked covalently end-to-end in order to create tubular structures by a growth-from-template approach? In our efforts to produce these one-dimensional extended structures, we have developed a new method of functionalizing pillar[5]arene in which one of the five hydroquinone units is converted into a diaminobenzoquinone analogue. The resulting diaminopillar[5]arene derivative, which undergoes a stereochemical inversion process that is slow on the (1)H NMR timescale, can be chemically modified yet further in a direction that is orthogonal to the plane of its methylene bridging carbons through the formation of oxazole heterocycles. This strategy has been employed to create rigid oligomers that resemble one-dimensional tubular arrays. As a proof-of-principle, a rigid pillar[5]arene dimer has been isolated and characterized in the solution state as a 1:1 complex with an extended viologen for which it acts as a receptor.

Abstract:A practical and effective trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH)-catalyzed cyclooligomerization strategy was developed for the synthesis of functionalized pillar[n]arenes and copillar[5]arenes from 1,4-dialkoxybenzenes with paraformaldehyde under mild reaction conditions, and the reaction mechanism of solution-phase catalytic synthesis of pillararenes was investigated by room-temperature X-band ESR spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, NMR and control experiments, suggesting a free radical process initially and a Friedel-Crafts alkylation process during the consequent coupling and ring-closure stage.

Abstract:A series of regioselective di- and trifunctionalized pillar[5]arene derivatives have been synthesized by a deprotection-followed-by-activation strategy, and their constitutions have been established as a result of having access to their solid-state structures. De-O-methylation occurs in a stepwise manner at lower temperatures under kinetic control, affording the desired oligo-substituted pillar[5]arene derivatives. In addition, the regioisomers of these derivatives can be isolated by installing triflate groups on the free hydroxyl groups.

Abstract:Pillar[n]arenes are a new class of host molecules, which are cyclic oligomers consisting of hydroquinones or 1,4-disubstituted hydroquinone ethers linked by methylene bridges in the para positions of the benze rings. Herein, recent development on the synthesis of pillar[n]arenes and pillar[n]arene derivatives, and their host-guest chemistry, i. e., molecular recognition and selective binding towards guest molecules, and their self-assembly properties was reviewed.
