Abstract:The C-O bond cleavage for activation of alcohols is synthetically useful and practically challenging. This work describes carbazate as a new type of electrochemically activated alkylating agent derived from ubiquitous alcohols for direct functionalization of heteroarenes under mild electrolytic conditions. The simple undivided cell at low oxidative potentials with carbon/platinum electrode set-ups offers excellent substrate tolerance, affording a variety of primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl-decorated heterocycles in good chemical yields. Furthermore, the mechanism for this electrochemical deoxyalkylation reaction has been investigated.

Abstract:Palladium-catalysed oxidative carbonylation using oxygen as the oxidant is an economical approach; however, the gas mixture of CO and air has an explosive limit of 12.5–74.0% that could hamper extensive application of this process. Herein we report an electrochemical aminocarbonylation of alkynes under atmospheric pressure in an undivided cell without an external oxidant. The transformation has a broad substrate scope (83 examples) that involves primary amines and ammonium salts. Furthermore, mechanistic studies through cyclic voltammetry, in situ infrared and quick-scanning X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy reveal the reasons for this protocol proceeding smoothly under electrochemical conditions.

Abstract:A photoinduced oxidative alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes initiated by intermolecular addition of alkoxycarbonyl radicals has been demonstrated. Abstract:Carbazole derived phosphine ligands containing pyridine moiety were designed and prepared. It allows the challenging Pd-catalyzed Markovnikov-selective alkoxycarbonylation of aliphatic alkenes to give the branched ester products (28 examples; 51–97% branch selectivity). Preliminary mechanistic studies support that the bridging bromide between Pd and Mn centers is crucial for the enhancement of regioselectivity.

Abstract:Oxidative carbonylation using carbon monoxide has evolved as an attractive tool to valuable carbonyl-containing compounds, while mixing CO with a stoichiometric amount of a chemical oxidant especially oxygen is hazardous and limits its application in scale-up synthesis. By employing anodic oxidation, we developed an electrochemical palladium-catalyzed oxidative carbonylation of arylhydrazines with alkynes, which is regarded as an alternative supplement of the carbonylative Sonogashira reaction. Combining an undivided cell with constant current mode, oxygen-free conditions avoids the explosion hazard of CO. A diversity of ynones are efficiently obtained using accessible arylhydrazines and alkynes under copper-free conditions. A possible mechanism of the electrochemical Pd(0)/Pd(II) cycle is rationalized based upon cyclic voltammetry, kinetic studies, and intermediates experiments.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed decarboxylative oxidation of benzylic redox-active esters is described. This protocol efficiently converts secondary or primary aliphatic carboxylic acids into aromatic ketones or aldehydes. A wide range of substrates selectively reacted in good to excellent yields with broad functional group tolerance. Notably, various biologically active molecules could also work well, which indicated the synthetic application of such a methodology.

Abstract:Branched-selective oxidative Heck coupling reactions have been developed between arylboronic acids and electronically unbiased terminal alkenes. The reactions exhibit high catalyst-controlled regioselectivity favoring the less common branched isomer. The reactions employ a catalyst composed of Pd(TFA)2/dmphen (TFA = trifluoroacetate, dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) and proceed efficiently at 45-60 °C under 1 atm of O2 without requiring other additives. A broad array of functional groups, including aryl halide, allyl silane and carboxylic acids are tolerated.

Abstract:Metal-catalyzed alkene arylalkoxylation is a powerful complexity-building strategy for the synthesis of oxygen heterocycles from simple γ-unsaturated alcohols, but only a few examples of catalytic enantioselective methods exist. Herein, an efficient palladium-catalyzed enantioselective arylalkoxylation of γ-hydroxyalkenes with aryl halides is reported. The salient features of this transformation include a remarkable broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and good functional group tolerance, delivering a series of chiral tetrahydrofurans containing a tertiary or quaternary stereocenter in good yields with up to 95% ee. The Xu10 ligand with a suitable side-arm was responsible for the high reactivity and good enantioselectivity of this transformation.

Abstract:A novel K2S2O8-promoted decarboxylative cross coupling of alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids with cyclic ethers was developed under aerobic conditions. The present protocol, which includes C-C and C=0 bond formation in one step through addition, oxidation, and decarboxylation processes, leads to the desired ketone products in moderate to excellent yields. In addition, mechanism studies showed that the transformation process undergoes a radical pathway via a direct ether.

Abstract:Oxidant-controlled selective mono-/di-alkenylation of aryl C-H bonds via Pd-catalysis is reported. The substrate scopes for both the mono- and di-alkenylation were good. Thioether was used as the directing group and the product can be transformed to a useful sulfoxide-olefin ligand by simple oxidation in quantitative yield.

Abstract:A synergistic chiral primary amine/palladium /p‐hydroquinone catalysis was developed to facilitate oxidative asymmetric allylic C‐H alkylation under aerobic conditions. The ternary synergistic catalysis enables a facile allylic C‐H activation and alkylation with oxygen so that stoichiometric utilization of benzoquinone can be avoided. The identified optimal catalytic system allows for terminal addition to allyl arenes with α‐branched β‐ketocarbonyls to afford allylic adducts bearing all‐carbon quaternary centers with high regio‐ and enantioselectivity. This work provides new insights for further studies on the aerobically oxidative C‐H alkylation reaction.
