Abstract:Current clinical dosimetric protocols (AAPM TG-51 and IAEA TRS-398) based on the absorbed dose to water require calibration measurements under reference conditions. For Cyberknife system, the reference condition in protocols cannot be met, and calibration has to be performed under non-reference condition. In order to solve this problem, a new formalism for small and nonstandard fields has been proposed based on the introduction of machine-specific field fmsr and the factor, \(k^{{\rm f}_{\rm msr},{\rm f}_{\rm ref}}_{Q_{\rm msr,Q}}\) which corrects the difference between the responses of an ion chamber in conventional field fref and fmsr. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of change in reference condition on dosimetric qualities. Central axis depth-dose curves, electron and photon energy spectrum and water-to-air stopping power ratios (spr) under three reference conditions were calculated. The EGSnrc user-code egs_chamber was used to calculate \(k^{{\rm f}_{\rm msr},{\rm f}_{\rm ref}}_{Q_{\rm msr,Q}}\) for two chambers with different wall and electrode materials. The results indicated that when the reference condition changed from Cyberknife reference condition to conventional reference condition, there was a relative difference approximately 9.39% in %dd(10) (percent depth-dose at 10cm depth), 3.93% in TPR20/10 (tissue-phantom ratio at 20 and 10cm depth), 0.09% in water-to-air spr. The calculated \(k^{{\rm f}_{\rm msr},{\rm f}_{\rm ref}}_{Q_{\rm msr,Q}}\) is close to unit, a beam quality specifier conversion relationship was derived to facilitate medical physicists to look up the corresponding \(k_{{\rm Q,Q_{0}}}\) from the existing protocols.
