Abstract:Guanxi has long been recognized as one of the major dynamics in the Chinese society where business behavior revolves around it.As a social capital of the most importance,it somehow determines the way of resource deployment.This article summarizes the connotation,characteristics and categorization of guanxi,analyzes the way it functions,discusses the managerial implications,and finally pilots on the trends of research on guanxi in the future.

Abstract:Theories on Guanxi being developed and improved becomes the focus for researchers in the fields of sociology,psychology,management and anthropology.Guanxi acts with cultural,transferable,reciprocal,intangible,utilitarian and long-term characteristics.Guanxi is formed with cultural,political and social reasons.Guanxi is influenced by organizational,strategic,institutional and individual factors.The outcomes of Guanxi are performance improvement,individual knowledge transferring and trust increasing.According to domestic and foreign literatures,this paper reviews Guanxi researchs and points out the future research directions.

Abstract:This conceptual paper takes a dynamic view of culture to re-examine the tradeoffs between positive and negative aspects of guanxi in China. Because of cross-border collaboration and the wide use of the internet, Chinese employees are now exposed to more diverse values. Considering this cultural shift, the current paper discusses how the widely publicized negative aspect of guanxi relations in Chinese organizations can be mitigated. We suggest that employees are likely to withdraw from peer-to-peer guanxi relations that involve ethical concerns, and the likelihood and speed of this relation change would vary in part on the focal party's heritage of Confucian cultural values. This paper contributes to the literature by offering a dynamic approach to reconcile the controversy about peer-to-peer guanxi's role in Chinese organizations. This dynamic examination can invite further research on the complicated evolution of guanxi.

Creativity and Social Alienation: the Costs of Being Creative

Abstract:Although creativity is a widely praised merit, the psychological costs that an employee may pay for being creative are less examined. The present study advances the research paradigm on the dark side of creativity by focusing on the negative psychological state (social alienation) of creative employees. By building on the studies on the homophily principle and on the cultural perspective of creativity, we investigated why creative employees are more likely to experience social alienation. Drawing on the social capital theory, we point out that social alienation of creative employees depends on their networking ability and harmony enhancement motive. A two-wave survey among 311 employees from 59 Chinese organizations supported the hypotheses. Implications of the findings are discussed for creativity and alienation literature as well as management practice.

Abstract:Guanxi refers to the durable social connections and networks a firm uses to exchange favors for organizational purposes. This study examines how and when guanxi operates as a governance mechanism that influences firm marketing competence and performance in the transitional economy of China. Drawing on social capital theory, the authors propose an integrative framework that unbundles the benefits and risks of guanxi and delineates the organizational processes to internalize guanxi as a corporate core competence. The authors surveyed senior executives in 282 firms in China's consumer products industries. The findings confirm guanxi's direct effects on market performance and its indirect effects mediated through channel capability and responsive capability. The authors also confirm that technological turbulence and competition intensity can be effective structure-loosening forces, thus reducing the governance effects of guanxi. The findings suggest that firms can improve market access and growth through guanxi networks, but managers need to capitalize on them from the personal to the corporate level. In addition, managers should be aware of guanxi's dark sides, which include reciprocal obligations and collective blindness. This study shows that personal networks are popular universally, but in China, they have unique, distinct ways of operation.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Guanxi is one of the most popular topics in Chinese and Western scholarship concerning social ties in China. However, several problems in research on guanxi persist, and multiple debates are still ongoing without much consensus in sight. This study has two goals. First, we offer a systematic review of the current literature on guanxi , especially by differentiating guan dyads from xi networks. This reconceptualization of guanxi enables us to clarify the concept of guanxi by differentiating its two dimensions. Second, based on this literature review, we propose a redirection of future research on guanxi such that guan dyads and xi networks are not examined in isolation; rather, their holistic and dynamic interaction is the most fruitful avenue for future research, especially the four mechanisms of their interaction. The proposed reconceptualization and redirection are our two contributions to the literature.

Abstract:Ethical leadership has been documented as a critical factor influencing employee behavior. This study aims to expand on previous research by investigating how ethical leadership cultivates healthy Chinese guanxi between employees and their supervisors and influences employee organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). We propose that two types of Chinese guanxi, favor‐seeking guanxi and rent‐seeking guanxi, may play a mediating role in the relationship between ethical leadership and OCB. Using survey data collected from Chinese employees (N = 502), regression and bootstrap analyses are used to test the proposed research model. The results suggest that ethical leadership not only directly promotes employee OCB performance, but also does so indirectly by facilitating favor‐seeking guanxi orientation and suppressing rent‐seeking guanxi orientation. The results provide a theoretical contribution to the study of ethical leadership and Chinese guanxi, and also extend our practical understanding of the role of ethical leadership in enhancing OCB effectively in the China context.

Abstract:How can people from diverse and different cultural backgrounds balance and reconcile their autonomous cultural identity with the universal dictates of the global age? My approach to this question is from an East Asian perspective, in particular by addressing the issue of 'Confucian cultural identity' under four broad topics: (1) the truth and falsehood of the discourse on 'Asian Values' and 'Confucian-style Capitalism'; (2) the spread of modern science and the tragic consequences of 'Instrumental Reason'; (3) criticism of instrumental reason and its encounter with Confucian virtue ethics; and (4) a reassessment of the 'Anthropocosmic Moral Metaphysics' of (Neo-) Confucianism. In conclusion, on the impending demand to cope with the crisis of our cultural identity in the age of globalisation, our project to strive for the viability of Confucian humanism in the age of globalisation, I think, should mean no other than the invocation of care-ethics that takes care of our alienated neighbours on the one hand and a thrust of an eco-friendly world view to the anthropocentric hegemony over nature, which has been appreciated by 'modern' men since the Enlightenment, on the other hand.

Abstract:Problem statement: The study aims to offer a discussion on social capital and guanxi, in order to illustrate the similarities and differences between these two concepts and how Chinese guanxi varies from Western preconceptions concerning social networking. Approach: The literature review and arguments were conducted to provide a systematic discussion of the guanxi and social capital relationship. Results: Both guanxi and social capital involve social relations; it is important to appreciate that guanxi does not relate exclusively to social capital, or that guanxi itself is simply another term for social capital. Conclusion: Both guanxi and social capital are similar concepts. Social capital is considered as both the attributes of individuals and organizations; thus, guanxi is distinctively about interpersonal relationships, which are often lost within the corporate environments of large organizations.

Abstract:Guanxi is often seen as an oriental cultural myth, because it often led people who are not experienced with the Chinese into confusion while interacting with Chinese people in various social settings. It is because the confusing characteristics of Guanxi, many scholars have dedicated their time to investigate its original and its evolution. However, a mere exploration into Guanxi's cultural and historical origin does not suffice the need for its increasingly diversified audience, especially in times where cross-border interactions are gradually intensified. It is during such a times, the expedition for an interpretation that is more relatable to the diverse audience is necessary. This paper is aiming to draw a novel interpretation of Guanxi by referring to contract and contract law – a universal concept. Meanwhile, this paper would also employ transaction cost analysis as the theoretical link between Guanxi and contract, which would serve as the philosophical foundation for the new interpretation of Guanxi.

Abstract:Informal affective bonding through which social resources are deployed, known as guanxi, is significant in social, political, and economic relationships in present-day China. Guanxi is sociologically understood as a form of social network and also as a type of social exchange. In addition, guanxi is regarded as a kind of or derived from ritual practices. Ritual aspects of guanxi are critically examined. The concept of ritual is distinguished from Confucian li, with which guanxi is often associated. Rituals held to be supportive of guanxi are examined, three distinct conceptualisations of ritual are identified, and ritual is differentiated from social practice, ceremony, and rite. Finally, emotions in guanxi ritual are briefly discussed, comparing Collins' approach with an account from the early Chinese theorist Xunzi.

Abstract:Guanxi research would benefit from an empirical description of holistic guanxi network structures and consideration of sociologically meaningful antecedents such as one's cultural value endorsement. This study, inspired by the relational sociology and drawing on the reported trustworthiness of a rich array of referees in one's guanxi network collected from the Traditional Culture and Cognitive Pattern Survey, identifies two types of guanxi network structures in contemporary China: one is featured by the binary distinction between family and non-family referees, and the other displays a fourfold classification scheme, respectively concerning parents, nuclear family members (children and spouse), other relatives and close friends, and acquaintances. Furthermore, traditional culture endorsement is positively correlated with the likelihood of being subject to the binary classification scheme, while some counter social forces, such as the establishment of quasi-kinship relationships, encourage one to lean toward the more fine-grained fourfold guanxi network partitioning.

Abstract:This study provides new insight into the guanxi practices of Chinese managers. The results of the study, based on structured interview data collected on the guanxi practices of 108 Chinese managers, revealed stark differences between business and government ties. Compared to business ties, government ties were more likely to develop from past personal associations and through moral obligation that is manufactured by gift giving, perpetuate through private setting interactions, and involve the exchange of confidential work-related information. Whereas, compared to government ties, business ties are more likely to develop from work-related encounters and through affective attachment that is nurtured by the discussion of personal matters, perpetuate through higher frequency interactions, and involve interactions in public settings.

Abstract:To reduce Confucian ethics to a "hierarchy of association" or to say that it is incapable of dealing with the problems of strangers is to only see that Confucian ethics stipulates different treatments for kin relations and the sexes. However, this fails to see the multiple different dimensions of Confucian ethics. In fact, the Confucians established universal relational ethics, rationality of social engagement, and a "way of being with" in the interpersonal relationships that are obtained between the self and others. This kind of ethics was not only effective in ancient society, but it is also effective at dealing with the problems of the modern "society of strangers": it has a universal applicability. Beginning from two Confucian stories, and drawing on records of Confucius and his disciples in the Analects alongside supporting passages from the Mengzi and the Xunzi, this essay elucidates the notions of how self and other should treat each other, how wise people should know themselves and others, how benevolent people should love themselves and others, to argue that Confucianism possesses a universal relational ethics and a "way of being with", and that the multiple dimensions of Confucian ethics cannot be reduced to just one.
The New Reflections on Corporate Governance:A Perspective of Chinese Social Guanxi Structure

Abstract:Sustained economic growth at the macro level requires effective support from corporate governance structures at the micro level. However, both in practice and theory, current research on Chinese corporate governance appears to be in a state of ambiguity. The discrepancy between appearance and essence in practice and between essence and form in theory presents a dilemma and challenge for research on Chinese corporate governance. This paper proposes a new perspective on corporate governance—an implicit contract explanation within the Chinese Guanxi structure —to help address this dilemma. Corporate governance comprises a collection of contracts among various stakeholders, with the content and form of these contracts embedded within the social structure of the parties involved in transactions. Without an understanding of contracts, it is difficult to comprehend corporate governance; similarly, without an understanding of Guanxi structures, it is challenging to grasp contracts. From a historical analysis perspective that draws upon ancient Chinese Confucian moral philosophy as well as recent insights from Liang Shuming on Chinese culture and sociologists such as Tao Menghe, Fei Xiaotong, and Zhai Xuewei, this paper outlines the fundamental logic underpinning contemporary society; analyzes social determinants behind contract content and form; identifies key differences between Eastern and Western contract forms; proposes cultural and ethical origins for implicit contracts formed within Chinese society; clarifies characteristics of implicit contracts including their advantages/disadvantages and suitability for use;explains an analytical framework for Chinese corporate governance built upon implicit contracts including reasons for transaction cost savings through implicit contracts as well as their implementation mechanisms within Chinese social Guanxi structures. This paper also reviews existing empirical research findings and analyzes how implicit contracts can stimulate transactions and promote economic growth, providing new insights into Coase’s theorem from a different angle. The perspective on implicit contracts proposed in this paper differs from those based on explicit contracts under Anglo-American models. It offers an effective path for introspection and analysis of corporate governance mechanisms within China’s historical traditions while meeting the requirements for modernization deeply rooted in China’s excellent traditional culture. This approach presents a new vision distinct from Western modernization models and strives for innovation within philosophical and social science disciplines. While this paper does not reject the existing logic of Western corporate governance theories, it emphasizes deeper analysis and expansion based on China’s institutional, social, and cultural background concerning different contract forms and situations.

Abstract:As China continues to open up to the transnational circulation of labor, ideas, technology and capital under globalization, we must wonder: will Chinese society’s more cosmopolitan and transnational groups continue to be guided by guanxi? The authors conducted 40 in-depth interviews with Chinese physicists at 11 research universities in three cities in order to examine the role of ethics, including guanxi, in the professional lives of one of China’s most cosmopolitan populations, the elite scientific community. Analysis reveals, counter-intuitively, that Chinese physicists very much think about guanxi in relation to their research grants and scientific collaboration, that the ethical connotation of guanxi is contextual, and that some see it as a double-edged sword. They realize that guanxi can empower the individual scientist and the scientific community even as it weakens them both.

In this research, we employed a linguistic approach to explore popular discourses on Guanxi. Although sharing the same Confucian roots, Chinese communities inside and outside Mainland China have undergone different historical trajectories. Hence, we took a comparative approach to examine guanxi in Mainland China and in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau (TW-HK-M). Comparing guanxi discourses in two Chinese societies aims at revealing the divergence of guanxi culture. The data for this research were collected on Twitter over a three-week period by searching tweets containing guanxi written in Simplified Chinese characters and in Traditional Chinese characters. After building, visualising, and conducting community detection on both semantic networks, two guanxi discourses were then compared in terms of their major concept sub-communities. This research aims at addressing two questions: Has the meaning of guanxi transformed in contemporary Chinese societies? And how do different socio-economic configurations affect the practice of guanxi? Results suggest that guanxi in interpersonal relationships has adapted to a new family structure in both Chinese societies. In addition, the practice of guanxi in business varies in Mainland China and in TW-HK-M. Furthermore, an extended domain was identified where guanxi is used in a macro-level discussion of state relations. Network representations of the guanxi discourses enabled reification of the concept and shed lights on the understanding of social connections and social orders in contemporary China.

Abstract:PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the importance and prevalence of Guanxi in business interactions in network-based societies such as China, few studies have the phenomenon from a dyadic view. In a business dyad, one partner may not value Guanxi and take it as a template for actions as the other does.Design/methodology/approachThe authors propose that such collective and asymmetric Guanxi orientation influence both the creation and distribution of relational rent in a Guanxi dyad. Furthermore, relationship-specific investments (RSIs) moderate the relationship between dyadic Guanxi orientation and relational rent creation and distribution.FindingsBased on a matched sample of supplier-buyer dyads in China, the authors find that joint Guanxi orientation is positively related to joint pie creation, whereas Guanxi orientation imbalance has a positive effect on the pie distribution imbalance.Originality/valueThese results contribute to the literature by revealing how dyadic Guanxi dynamics and practices affect dyadic performance and providing managers with meaningful implications for dyadic Guanxi management.
