Abstract:Thermal preservation and heat storage performance cannot be fully realized in the traditional design of the Chinese solar greenhouse (CSG) north wall. To increase greenhouse thermal efficiency and maximize solar energy utilization, researchers have divided greenhouse into the independent solar heating system as well as the independent north wall heat preservation system. The wall-mounted solar heating system used water as a medium with the characteristics of chemical stability, liquidity preference and high specific heat capacity for heat transport and storage have been developed. To explore and create a better suitable greenhouse thermal environment, we proposed an active solar water curtain heating system with a non-woven fabric liner between the two-layer polyethylene film coated with black water-based paint. The greenhouse heating load was estimated based on energy balance theories during the nighttime and the water mass for heat transfer was calculated. Field tests were carried out to verify theories and investigate the thermal performance of the system. The average heat collection ratio was about 80.1 % and 63 % of the stored heat was released at night with the 3.6 °C improvement in interior air temperature and 6.6 % reduction in interior air relative humidity. The heating COP of the system was 12.5 on average and the energy saving rate was 92 %. Besides, the greenhouse with the solar heating system can save energy consumption cost about 348 USD yr −1 as the cost of solar heating system can be repaid in 1.4 years. The system combined the energy balance method to design with more efficient thermal performance, energy conservation, utilization of solar energy and affordable payback period thereby creating a suitable thermal environment in the Chinese solar greenhouse, which is recommended for practical application.

Abstract:It is very important to maintain an optimum inside environment during the different stages of aquatic animals growth for modeling thermal behavior of aquaculture greenhouse. A mechanistic model was developed to describe the thermal behavior of a shading turtle greenhouse system with polystyrene foamed plastic envelope. Energy balance equations have been written considering the effects of conduction, convection, radiation, evaporation and ventilation. Numerical computations have been performed for special days in the month of January 2012, under the climatic conditions of Hangzhou in Eastern China. The governing equations are numerically solved using Matlab 7.0 software to predict the inside and outside surface temperature of the envelope, room temperature, relative humidity, and water temperature. At the same time, on-site measurements were taken at a turtle-breeding facility in Hangzhou for comparisons with predictions. Results showed that the average absolute errors of air temperature, water temperature, and relative humidity were 1.3, 0.32℃ and 3%, respectively. The results also showed that the internal air temperature and water temperature could maintain a relatively stable state by using two sets of 2.7 kW ground-source heat pumps for the turtle greenhouse heating (about 540 m2), a suitable thermal environment for the turtles growth. Model simulations were used to investigate the effects of the greenhouse on the air and water temperature and to examine the heatfluxes. The results suggest that the daily mean temperature is 5.8℃, the solar radiation is 132 W/m2, the room temperature maintains 35℃, and the water temperature maintains 30℃ when the heat pump provides 40 W/m2in January near Eastern China-Hangzhou. An examination of the heatfluxes suggests that thermal radiation and underground heat conduction are major mechanisms of heat loss for the greenhouse covers and water. About 44.5% of heat loss was caused by underground heat exchange, about 43% by built envelopment heat exchange, and about 12.5% was by air leakage. Reducing these heatfluxes will help conserve and utilize energy. Moreover, the model was deemed to be a useful tool for exploring the performance of heating greenhouse systems under different scenarios, such as different cover materials, sizes and climates.

Abstract:To discuss the energy saving effects of heat-reflective insulation coating on exterior envelope walls in the hot summer and cold winter zone, the experimental apparatus and the actual test rooms are built respectively, the heat flux data of east, south and west walls are analyzed by monitoring the wall temperature changes of two test rooms with and without the heat reflective insulation coating in Hangzhou in summer and winter. The experimental results indicate that the heat reflective insulation coating could reduce the exterior wall surface temperature effectively, and the maximum temperature change is about 8-10 degrees C. By calculating, it was found that the annual air-conditioning electricity saving with heat reflective insulation coating on exterior walls is about 5.8 kWh/(m(2) month), which shows that the energy saving effect of the heat insulation coating on the exterior wall is obvious in Hangzhou. Abstract:In hot summer and cold winter zone of China, the intermittent and compartmental heating method of air conditioning is widely adopted.The intermittent heating method makes the heat storage in walls become the main way for heat dissipation.The compartmental heating method results in a large amount of heat loss not only in exterior walls, but also in interior walls.Based on this heating method, a series of experiments were conducted in Shaoxing, a typical city in the hot summer and cold winter zone.The results showed that, internal insulating method for exterior wall could save more energy than external insulating method by reducing the wall heat storage amount.Besides, both the exterior walls and interior walls should be insulated as the heat loss in interior walls accounts for a large proportion of the total heating load and whether the adjacent room heating or not has little effect on reducing it.

Abstract:An underground heat storage system in a double-film-covered greenhouse and an adjacent greenhouse without the heat storage system were designed on the basis of plant physiology to reduce the energy consumption in greenhouses. The results indicated that the floor temperature was respectively 5.2 °C, 4.6 °C and 2.0 °C higher than that of the soil in the adjacent reference greenhouse after heat storage in a clear, cloudy and overcast sky in winter. Results showed that the temperature and humidity were feasible for plant growth in the heat saving greenhouse.

Abstract:Chinese solar greenhouse (CSG) is an energy-saving agricultural building which is used to grow vegetables in winter. The north wall of CSG plays an crucial role in concerning the production yield and quality during the winter months. To improve the thermal performance of north wall, different internal surface structures (ISS) with same materials were compared. Based on the field experiment and the proposed valuation, the dynamic heat storage-release characteristics of the north walls have been analyzed and discussed. The results showed that compared with the flat wall and the striped wall, the alveolate wall has better properties of heat storage and thermal insulation. Moreover, relative humidity in this type of greenhouse is more suitable for growing crops. The alveolate wall can improve indoor thermal environment and reduce the sensitivity to external environment. The obtained results can provide a basis for the scientific construction of the CSG north wall. It has significant potential for the area in high latitude, high altitude and long winter.

Active Air-Source Heat Storage and Release System for Solar Greenhouses: Design and Performance

Abstract:The temperature difference between day and night in a solar greenhouse is large. Heat in a greenhouse is typically in excess during the day while the temperature is low and the humidity is high at night. This study designs and tests an active heat storage and release air-source heat-pump system with a thermally insulated water tank as the energy storage body. By comparing air temperature and humidity in a test greenhouse with a control greenhouse in typical weather conditions, the power consumption and performance of the system are evaluated. The results show that compared with the control greenhouse, the average daytime temperature of the test greenhouse is lowered by about 3 °C during the operation of the system in typical weather conditions. At night, the average temperature is increased by about 4 °C, and the relative humidity is decreased by about 20%. When optimized, the maximum coefficient of performance (COP) of the system can reach 4.32 in heat storage mode. The nighttime heat release from the energy storage tank accounts for 26.9% to 51.2% of the nighttime energy consumption, and the energy utilization efficiency is 59.6% to 497.0%. This study provides a new way to control environmental parameters in solar greenhouses.

Abstract:The solar greenhouses in China are composed of gables on the east and west sides, north walls, and north and south roofs. The south roof is the main heat dissipation surface of the greenhouse. To quantitatively and comprehensively analyse the heat transfer characteristics and heat loss pathways of the south roof of a solar greenhouse, based on the actual usage of the greenhouse, the heat transfer of the south roof is classified into two working conditions: heat transfer of the transparent covering material (TCM) and heat transfer of the composite thermal insulation coating (CTIC). A theoretical heat transfer model of the covering layer of the solar greenhouse under all working conditions is constructed by applying the heat transfer theory. The model was tested using field test data from two areas different regions in China: Beijing and Lhasa. The results show good agreement between the simulated and measured values, the relative errors between simulated and measured values were 18.54% and 8.17%, respectively, with root mean square errors of 1.69 and 1.92. The model can comprehensively and accurately reflect the comprehensive heat transfer coefficient and heat loss changes of the south roof of the solar greenhouse. It can be used to analyze the proportion of heat loss caused by radiation, convection, and water vapor condensation. The analysis shows that condensation heat loss cannot be ignored during the winter night period. Measures such as covering the roof with plastic film and controlled irrigation can help reduce condensation heat loss.

Abstract:With a demonstration project,tests the thermal performance of the curtain-wall form solar heating system.In the test period from January 7 to 9 in 2013,mean outdoor temperature is -7.7 ℃,the average collecting efficiency of the solar energy collection system is about 27.5%,and the average COP of heat pump as subsidiary heat source is 1.554.In the test period from March 13 to 15,mean outdoor temperature is 3 ℃,and the average COP of heat pump is 1.782.The test result of March 13th shows that the effective mean thermal efficiency of the solar energy collection system is 18.8%,and the heat loss of water tank and pipeline is comparatively less,which only takes 9.16% of effective heat collection of solar energy.When the terminal fan-coil adopts the air distribution mode of air supply downward from side, indoor heating effect is better.

Abstract:Improving the solar thermal storage capacity of the north wall of the solar greenhouse can effectively enhance the indoor thermal environment during the night-time in winter. However, the indoor thermal environment is also influenced by the interaction between the spatial parameters of the solar greenhouse and outdoor meteorological conditions. Additionally, the heat storage and release performance of the north wall are dynamically affected by changes in the indoor thermal environment. This complicates the quantitative assessment of the impact of solar active–passive heat storage methods applied to north walls on the indoor thermal environment. Therefore, in this study, we develop a mathematical model that considers simplified calculations of the solar greenhouse's spatial parameters and the design method of an active–passive ventilation wall with latent heat storage , which was proposed in the early stage, for evaluating the impact of the solar thermal storage and release characteristics of the north wall on the indoor thermal environment of the solar greenhouse. This model is validated against measured data from the experimental solar greenhouse with high accuracy. Using this model, we analyze the quantitative reinforcement effects of a phase change composite wallboard and a solar collector system on the solar energy utilization of the north walls and its effects on the indoor thermal environment. Compared to ordinary solar greenhouses in Wuzhong, the application of a GH-20 composite phase change thermal storage wallboard to improve the passive solar energy utilization of the north wall can increase the solar energy contribution rate by 90.9%. Furthermore, integrating a multi-surface solar air collector with double-receiver tubes on the phase change composite wall can increase the solar energy contribution rate by 95.4%. Also, the experimental results reveal that the solar active–passive heat storage methods applied to the north wall can enhance the indoor thermal environment during night-time and increase cucumber yield by more than 10% in winter. This study provides a method reference for optimizing the active–passive solar thermal utilization of the solar greenhouse.

Abstract:The use of renewable energy for food and vegetable production is a potential sustainable method to reduce fossil energy consumption. Chinese solar greenhouses (CSGs) are horticultural facility buildings in the northern hemisphere that use solar energy to produce off-season vegetables in winter. The north wall heat storage and release capacity of CSG has a significant impact on the indoor thermal–humidity environment. However, common traditional solar greenhouses commonly have problems such as insufficient heat storage and release, thick temperature stability zones inside the walls, and inability to dynamically regulate the entire greenhouse environment. Therefore, a novel active–passive heat storage wall system (APHSWS) incorporating phase change materials has been developed to promote the thermal performance of the CSG and its internal temperature of the thermal storage wall in this paper. Through experimental and simulation methods, the heat storage and release of the APHSWS and its impact on the greenhouse environment are investigated. The findings indicate that the APHSWS has increased the wall heat storage and release capacity, compared to the ordinary greenhouse without the APHSWS, in three typical weather conditions in winter (i.e., sunny, overcast, and cloudy); the average temperature of greenhouse with the APHSWS has increased in indoor air temperature, wall surface temperature, and soil surface temperatures of 1.58–6.06 °C, 2.71–6.58 °C, 0.91–6.39 °C, respectively; and during the experiment, the greenhouse with the APHSWS has a monthly average daily effective accumulated temperature of 1.39 times, 1.18 times, 0.60 times, and 0.20 times that of the ordinary greenhouse without the APHSWS from December to March of the next year, respectively. Under typical sunny conditions, the greenhouse wall heat storage capacity increased by 1.59–2.44 MJ/m2 and the heat release capacity increased by 0.97–1.17 MJ/m2. At the direction of wall thickness, the temperature at each point inside the wall with the APHSWS is always higher than that of ordinary wall without the APHSWS. In addition, the operating cost of the APHSWS in winter is analyzed.

Abstract:Chinese solar greenhouses (CSGs) are the important agricultural building facility with highly efficient and sustainable utilization of solar energy. In order to improve the thermal insulation performance and reduce the heat loss, different insulation cover measures were applied to Chinese solar greenhouses. In this study, a solar greenhouse with an internal insulation blanket (SG1), a greenhouse with an internal blanket and an internal plastic film (SG2) and a greenhouse with an external blanket, an internal blanket and an internal plastic film (SG3) were chosen as experimental objects to analyze their indoor temperature environment. The results indicated that the differences of solar radiation interior among three greenhouses were similar, which was not the main reason that caused the differences of the temperature environment in the three greenhouses. During the tests, the nighttime average temperature was increased by 2.1-3°C by adding the cover materials, and the duration of nighttime temperature greater than 8°C was increased by 33.5%-38.2%. In addition, the cost is increased by adding the insulation cover materials, but it will be beneficial for greenhouse production to reduce additional energy consumption
Performance Investigation of a Solar Heating System with Underground Seasonal Energy Storage for Greenhouse Application

Abstract:This study reports the performance of a demonstrated 2304 m(2) solar-heated greenhouse equipped with a seasonal thermal energy storage system in Shanghai, east China. This energy storage system utilises 4970 m(3) of underground soil to store the heat captured by a 500 m(2) solar collector in non-heating seasons through U-tube heat exchangers. During heating seasons, thermal energy is delivered by the heat exchange tubes placed on the plants shelves and the bare soil. The system can operate without a heat pump, which can save electricity consumption and further enhance the solar fraction. It was found that in the first operation year, 331.9 GJ was charged, and 208.9 CJ was later extracted for greenhouse space heating. No auxiliary heating equipment was installed so that solar energy covered all the heating loads directly or indirectly. It was demonstrated that this system was capable of maintaining an interior air temperature that was 13 degrees C higher than the ambient value when the latter temperature was -2 degrees C at night. The ECOP (electrical coefficient of performance) of the first operation year was approximately 8.7, indicating a better performance than the common heat pump heating system. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Experimental Study on Effects of Heat Saving and Heating in an Underground Heat Storage System in Greenhouse

Abstract:To reduce energy consumption for greenhouse heating, an underground heat storage system in greenhouse was designed based on the plant physiology. Some parameters, including air temperature, humidity, flat temperature inside greenhouse and air temperature, soil temperature in adjacent greenhouse without heat saving and outside greenhouse, were measured during heat saving in the day and heating at night in winter. It was indicated that the flat temperature in the greenhouse after heat saving was 4.8℃ and 4.4℃ higher than that of the greenhouse without heat saving in the clear day and cloudy in winter respectively. In the over cloudy sky,the time of heat saving should be shorten, but the flat temperature was still 2.6℃ higher than that of the adjacent greenhouse owing to the longtime heat saving. In addition, the temperature inside greenhouse with heat saving at night was 3.1℃, 2.0℃, 1.5℃higher than that of the adjacent greenhouse without heat saving respectively and the average temperature difference between inside and outside greenhouse were 3.95℃, 3.21℃, 2.35℃ respectively during heating at night in the clear day, cloudy sky and over cloudy sky in winter, which could at least satisfy 35.7% of the energy consumption for greenhouse heating. So the effects heat saving and heating in the system are significant.
Experimental and Theoretical Analysis on Thermal Performance of Solar Thermal Curtain Wall in Building Envelope

Abstract:The need for energy efficient building design has stimulated the integrating buildings with energy systems. In this paper, a novel solar thermal curtain wall (STCW), which is the solar collector installed as a building envelope or integrated to normal facades, is developed. A stand-alone house with the STCW was constructed and thermal performance of the STCW was tested and theoretically analyzed. The results showed that the STCW combined energy production for hot water supply with other functional features of architectural, structural and aesthetic as a new kind of building component. In typical summer day and winter day, the efficiency of the STCW system were 56.8% and 41.0%, respectively. The heat transfer coefficient of the STCW varied monthly, with the maximum value recorded being 1.99 Wm(-2) K-1 in August and the minimum value recorded being 0.86 W m(-2) K-1 in January. A sensitivity analysis was made to investigate variations on the heat transmission load of the solar curtain wall. The results show that the transmission heating load can be reduced by about 39% when the insulation is increased from 25 mm to 50 mm. A comparison between the solar collector integrated with traditional wall and solar curtain wall only was made. Integrated solar collector to wall provides more damping of load fluctuation and smaller peak load, compared with traditional walls, the heating load of facade-integrated walls are less and the walls even contribute heating for the building. Though the cooling load was increased, the comprehensive performance for the facade-integrate walls are superior to the traditional walls. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A testing plant of PV glazing window was set up in Hong Kong and comparative performance test was done for PV single-glazed window,PV double-glazed window and ventilated PV double-glazed window.Different influences of three window structures on heat gain of building,performance of PV cells and daylight of building were analyzed.Results show that in the summer of subtropical zone,heat gain and cooling load of building can be decreased evidently by using ventilated PV double-glazed window.At the same time,the temperature of PV cell is decreased to inprove its stability and photovoltaic performance.
Effect of Location and Distribution of Insulation Layers on the Dynamic Thermal Performance of Chinese Solar Greenhouse Walls

Abstract:Chinese solar greenhouses (CSG) are fully passive solar greenhouses. The dynamic thermal characteristics of 15 wall configurations with one or two insulation layers were investigated numerically during clear winter days for a typical CSG design using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. The total wall thickness of 0.6 m and the total insulation layer thickness of 0.12 m were kept constant for all cases. For the case of a single layer of insulation, the optimum wall design consisted of (from inside to outside): 0.12 m of brick, 0.12 m of insulation, and 0.36 m of brick. For the case of two layers of insulation, the optimum wall design consisted of (from the inside to the outside): 0.12 m of brick, 0.06 m of insulation, 0.36 m of brick, and 0.06 m of insulation. This study also showed that the wall configuration having the maximum time lag and the minimum decrement factor was similar to the configurations reported by other studies, but that the maximum time lag and the minimum decrement usually used to optimize the design of insulated building walls did not result in the optimum configuration of the insulation layers in Chinese solar greenhouse walls.

Abstract:<p>Active-passive phase change heat storage technologies have been obtained extensive application to decrease greenhouse's demands for fossil energy during off-seasons. To develop the utilization ratio of solar energy in solar greenhouses during winter, the active-passive ventilation wall with latent heat storage (APVW-L) was introduced and could be integrated into greenhouse's back-wall. However, system design and operation parameters are subjected to numerous factors, including its structure, material performance and outdoor meteorological parameters. To achieve optimization in the energy performance of this system, this study used finite element analysis and lumped parameter analysis to establish coupled energy balance equations of the APVW-L and the air inside vertical air passages, and the cubic spline interpolation was used to calculate the continuous relationship between phase change material's equivalent specific heat capacity and temperature. This modeling method of the APVW-L was accurately validated against the measured data, and then used in the optimization design and operation strategy of the APVW-L in the greenhouses. This study demonstrated that the optimized APVW-L could store 5.36 MJ/(m<sup>2</sup>·day) of solar energy in Beijing. Compared to the identical conventional greenhouses, after midnight, the experimental greenhouse having APVW-L increased the back-wall's interior surface temperature by 2.2∼3.4 °C, and the average indoor air temperature by 0.8∼1.4 °C. This study provides methods for the APVW-L's optimization design and its operation strategy, even for the rationalization of the near-zero energy consumption of the solar greenhouse during winter.</p>

Abstract:For the weakness of actual Trombe wall that slows indoor temperature rise in the morning, an improved Trombe wall with honeycomb structure was built based on the comparable hot-box. Under conditions with heat storage materials or without, comparison tests for the thermal performance of the solar house with improved Trombe wall were done. The experiment results showed that, compared with the traditional Trombe wall, the improved Trombe wall has higher thermal efficiency, and speeds up indoor temperature rise.

Abstract:Based on the principle of spacing prism, a novel greenhouse cover plate with beam split and heat control function is proposed. The visible light needed for plant growth transmits into the greenhouse and near-infrared radiation is absorbed to reduce the internal temperature. The target is to design a greenhouse cover plate that can not only reduces the temperature of greenhouse, but also reduces the energy consumption of greenhouses cooling system in summer. The relative position and size of the heat-absorbing plate are obtained through theoretical calculations. Based on the Monte Carlo light tracking principle, optical software is used to optimize the operating mode of the heat-absorbing plate. The relationship between air flow, efficiency and outlet temperature are analyzed by CFD numerical simulations. The integrating box is designed on principle of integrating ball, which is used to test this device's transmission and thermal characteristics. The test results are compared with double-layer vacuum glass under actual weather conditions. The results show that the transmission rate of spectral temperature control cover structure (STCCS) is about 60 % in the morning and afternoon, but it is lower at noon, approximately 47.32 %. Based on the thermal characteristic experiment results, it can be known that the average inside temperature of the STCCS box is decreased by 3.16 °C compared with the double-layer vacuum glass, and the thermal load is reduced by 21 %.
