Abstract:Compact and efficient terahertz (THz) polarization conversion components are of importance for applications where the small dimension of the laser device/system is critical. Here, we propose an ultracompact L-shaped subwavelength patterns on metal films to realize the THz polarization management. By optimizing the geometric parameters of single-layered and double-layered patterns, the linear-polarized THz incidence can be converted to elliptical polarized output or rotated by 90° efficiently due to the THz extraordinary optical transmission phenomenon. The physical mechanism is explored by mode analysis using numerical and analytical modeling.

Abstract:We propose an artificial birefringent terahertz (THz) device constructed by subwavelength L-shaped hole arrays on a single metallic layer. This structure is able to work as a polarizer when the incident frequency is between the cut-off frequencies of two eigenmodes. When the incident wave is beyond cut-off frequencies of these two modes, it can be designed as an efficient half- or quarter-wave plate with extraordinary transmission properties. A big effective index difference from 0.254 to 0.768 is obtained using a subwavelength-thick planar structure, which can reduce the thickness of the device to one tenth of conventional quartz birefringent crystals for THz waves. Abstract:A quarter-wave plate using plasmonic patch antennas has been investigated. The nanostructures can convert linear polarized light into circular polarized light in the visible range (633 nm). By further exploiting the dimer patch antenna structure composed of different metals, directional emission (with a directivity of 4.8) of circular polarized light (with a conversion efficiency of 27.8%) in an oblique direction with respect to the incident light is enabled. Compared with previous designs, the proposed structures are ultra-thin, and are more suitable for integration applications.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) electromagnetic waves have important applications in science and technology but available functional devices suffer from the issues of bulky size, low efficiency and narrow bandwidth. Here, based on Jones matrix and Poincar'e sphere analyses, we present a set of general criterions to help design high-efficiency ultra-wide band THz wave plates using ultra-thin reflective metamaterials. Two half-wavelength and one quarter-wavelength THz wave plates are designed and fabricated based on the general criterions, and their excellent polarization manipulation capabilities are demonstrated experimentally. In particular, the realized devices, with thicknesses similar to lambda/7, exhibit polarization-conversion efficiencies higher than 80% in ultra-wide working bandwidths (relative bandwidth >80% at about similar to 0.7 THz). Abstract:Metamaterials open up various exotic means to control electromagnetic waves and among them polarization manipulations with metamaterials have attracted intense attention. As of today, static responses of resonators in metamaterials lead to a narrow-band and single-function operation. Extension of the working frequency relies on multilayer metamaterials or different unit cells, which hinder the development of ultra-compact optical systems. In this work, we demonstrate a switchable ultrathin terahertz quarter-wave plate by hybridizing a phase change material, vanadium dioxide (VO2), with a metasurface. Before the phase transition, VO2 behaves as a semiconductor and the metasurface operates as a quarter-wave plate at 0.468 THz. After the transition to metal phase, the quarter-wave plate operates at 0.502 THz. At the corresponding operating frequencies, the metasurface converts a linearly polarized light into a circularly polarized light. This work reveals the feasibility to realize tunable/active and extremely low-profile polarization manipulation devices in the terahertz regime through the incorporation of such phase-change metasurfaces, enabling novel applications of ultrathin terahertz meta-devices.

Abstract:Over the last decades, manipulating polarization has received much attention due to its wide applications in science and technology. In this paper, a half-waveplate based on a field transformation (FT) method is proposed and investigated in order to convert polarization, which works at millimeter-wave band with a wide incident angle and broad working bandwidth. Inspired by the FT method, we confine our attention to a two-dimensional (2D) case of in-plane wave propagation on the x-y plane, with both material properties and fields unchanged in the z direction. The fields are denoted with a subscript "(0)" in the virtual space. Then a series of theoretical calculations is analyzed in detail. Under the guidance of theoretical analysis, it is shown that the main job for realizing this half-wavepalate is to obtain a material with specific permittivity and permeability. The proposed waveplate is composed of periodically arranged two dielectric layers each with sub-wavelength in height. By using the effective medium theory, the effective electromagnetic (EM) parameters of the waveplate can be tuned by manipulating the heights of the two dielectric layers. Among them one layer is a material with a permittivity of 10 and height of 0.68 mm, and another layer material has a permittivity of 1, and height of 5 mm. We alternately arrange the two materials along one direction periodically to obtain a waveplate for realizing the TE-to-TM and LCP-to-RCP conversion. The thickness of whole waveplate is 5.5 mm. A broadband EM half-waveplate is achieved in millimeter-wave region, which possesses a nearly 90% conversion efficiency across the frequency band from 24 GHz to 37 GHz. At the same time, we also find that when the incident angle gradually increases from 0 degrees to 60 degrees , the performances of polarization conversion efficiency and working bandwidth are still good. For the incident angle of 60 degrees, a 3-dB bandwidth over 26 33 GHz is still achieved. The performance of the waveplate is verified through both full-wave simulation and experimental measurement, which are in good agreement with each other. Meanwhile, three-dimensional (3D) printing technology makes the sample fabricated more easily. Another advantage of our design is that the 3D printing technology can be used to carry out the experimental fabrication, which may pave a new way to manufacturing more microwave devices.

Abstract:Broad bandwidth is a unique nature of terahertz (THz) waves. THz optical research usually uses time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) systems spanning over 0.1-4 THz. Polarization control, especially quarter-wave and half-wave conversion across such a broad band is very challenging. In this work we present an ultra-broadband tunable polarization converter for THz waves based on a total-internal-reflection (TIR) sandwich structure. By finely tunning the air gap between the prism and the metal mirror, quarter-wave and half-wave conversion, as well as left-right circular conversion can be achieved in 0.3-2.5 THz with an excellent accuracy and efficiency.
Ultra-broadband high-efficiency cross-polarization conversion and amplitude-phase manipulable multi-functional wavefront manipulation based on terahertz metasurface

Abstract:Abstract Drawing upon the physical phenomenon of polarization transformation, this paper proposes an ultra-broadband, high-efficiency linear polarization converter composed of a metallic grating, an L-shaped metallic patch, and a dielectric substrate. The polarization conversion properties have been scrutinized using the finite element numerical simulation software CST. The computational outcomes reveal that the polarization converter operates within the frequency range of 0.5 THz to 1.8 THz, exhibiting a relative bandwidth of 113%, a transmission coefficient exceeding 0.87, a polarization conversion efficiency approaching 100%, and a phase coverage spanning 360°. Furthermore, a Fabry-Perot interference model was established utilizing Matlab to corroborate the concurrence between the theoretical analysis and the numerical findings. The polarization converter metasurface amalgamates both phase and transmission amplitude variations to accomplish not only a two-dimensional multi-channel focusing lens operating between 1.55 THz and 1.65 THz, but also a spatial imaging capability utilizing transmission amplitude variation within the 0.5 THz to 1.15 THz range. The outcomes demonstrate that the devised metasurface is impervious to the polarization direction of the incident wave, exhibiting ultra-broadband and high transmission efficacy, thus providing novel insights for the versatility of terahertz wave polarization and phase manipulation.

Multi-functional High-Efficient Reflective Polarization Converter Based on All-Metal Stereostructured Anisotropic Metamaterials at Terahertz Frequency

Abstract:In this paper, a high-efficient reflective polarization converter based on all-metal stereostructured anisotropic metamaterials (AMMs) in terahertz (THz) region was proposed and investigated numerically. The unit-cell structure of the converteris assembled by vertical metallic double L-shaped stereostructures (DLSSs) adhered on the ground plane. The simulated results show that the proposed stereostructured AMMs can convert the incident x/y-polarized (x/y-pol.) wave into the right/left-handed circular polarization (RCP/LCP) wave, y/x-polarized (y/x-pol.) wave, and left/right-handed circular polarization (LCP/RCP) wave at 1.37 THz, 1.45 THz and 1.54 THz, respectively. Furthermore, the high-efficient polarization conversion of the proposed AMMs can be sustained within a wide incident angle from 0° to 75° for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. The physical mechanisms of the observed polarization conversion are elucidated by taking advantage of surface current distributions. The further simulation results indicate that the operation frequency can be adjusted by changing the geometric parameters of the DLSSs. The proposed stereostructured AMMs-based reflective polarization converter can find potential THz applications, such as remote sensors, imaging systems, and reflector antennas.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a dual-polarization ultra-wideband metasurface with half-reflection and half-transmission based on a double-split-ring (DSR) structure operating in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. The designed metasurface enables simultaneous control of circularly polarized (CP) and linearly polarized (LP) waves in both the reflection and transmission modes, covering an extensive THz frequency range. The unit-cell architecture of the metasurface consists of a periodic arrangement of the DSR structure made of metal, which is affixed to an ultra-thin dielectric substrate. By manipulating the size and rotation direction of the DSR structure, we achieve full phase coverage of 0-2π of the orthogonally polarized LP and CP waves across the frequency span of 0.3-1.2 THz, encompassing both transmission and reflection scenarios. The relative bandwidths of the orthogonal LP and CP waves for both reflection and transmission are significantly wide, reaching 86% and 120%, respectively, with an average amplitude of 0.45. Specifically, through numerical simulations, we demonstrated that the designed metasurfaces have ability to achieve THz beam deflection and vortex beam generation with simultaneously reflection and transmission for LP and CP waves. The proposed dual-polarization ultra-wideband metasurface holds great promise for various applications in the terahertz frequency range. These findings pave the way for the development of flexible and versatile THz devices with expanded capabilities, opening up new possibilities for wavefront manipulation in metasurfaces.

Abstract:In this letter, we report a full-metallic broadband wave plate assembled by standing metallic L-shaped stereostructures (LSSs). We show that with an array of LSSs, high polarization conversion ratio is achieved within a broad frequency band. Moreover, by rotating the orientation of the array of LSSs, the electric components of the reflection beam in two orthogonal directions and their phase difference can be independently tuned. In this way, all the polarization states on the Poincare sphere can be realized. As examples, the functionalities of a quarter wave plate and a half wave plate are experimentally demonstrated with both reflection spectra and focal-plane-array imaging. Our designing provides a unique approach in realizing the broadband wave plate to manipulate the polarization state of light. (C) 2014 Author(s). Abstract:Efficiently manipulating the polarization states of electromagnetic waves is of great importance for communication, imaging, and sensing. In this paper, we aim to control the circular polarization states, e.g., left-hand, or right-hand, for the bidirectional radiated waves utilizing a pair of back-to-back quarter-wave plates, which are integrated within an ultrathin cavity. As an example, a bidirectional circularly polarized wave with the same helicity in forward and backward is generated based on numerical analyses, and proved by experiments in microwave region. The proposed ultrathin back-to-back quarter-wave plates cavity can be adopted to higher frequencies, e.g., terahertz and mid-infrared ranges, with lower metallic conductivity. The proposed method exhibits the advantages of compact dimension and low-cost implementation in engineering the bidirectional polarization states of electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:Abrupt phase shift introduced by plasmonic resonances has been frequently used to design subwavelength wave plates for optical integration. Here, with the sandwich structure consisting of a top periodic patterned silver nanopatch, an in-between insulator layer and a bottom thick Au film, we realize a broadband half-wave plate which is capable to cover entire visible light spectrum ranging from 400 to 780 nm. Moreover, when the top layer is replaced with a periodic array of composite super unit cell comprised of two nanopatches with different sizes, the operation bandwidth can be further improved to exceed an octave (400-830 nm). In particular, we demonstrate that the designed half-wave plate can be used efficiently to rotate the polarization state of an ultra-fast light pulse with reserved pulse width. Our result offers a new strategy to design and construct broadband high efficiency phase-response based optical components using patterned metal nanoarray/insulator/metal structure.

Abstract:The paper presents an ultra-broadband and high-efficiency terahertz (THz) reflective metamaterials polarization converter (PC). It consists of the gold (Au) pattern layer, the dielectric layer inlaid with an Au frame and the Au substrate layer. Based on the full vector finite element method, the polarization conversion properties, physical mechanism and the effects of device parameters are studied theoretically. The results show that the PC can realize linear and circular polarization conversion within the range of center frequency 7.5 THz and bandwidth 5.0 THz, and the polarization conversion rate (PCR) is greater than 99%. They are clearly superior to what has been reported. Meanwhile, it can maintain good polarization conversion properties when the incident angle of THz wave is less than 30°. The proposed PC has potential application prospects in THz polarization imaging and communication fields.

Abstract:In this work, a new design aimed to perform as a half-wavelength plate in the terahertz regime is presented. The fabricated samples exhibit a phase difference of 180A degrees at 0.73 THz between the two principal polarisations that matches with the modelling results. The experimentally determined transmittances of the two polarisations were around 61 %, which is below theoretical predictions of reaching more than 90 %. The difference between the two results is explained, and possibilities for increasing the transmittance are presented.

Abstract:THz wave offers great potential for applications in security screening, nondestructive evaluation and high-speed wireless communication. It is expected that THz switches, attenuators, filters, polarization controllers and even routers will become available to handle THz waves in reconfigurable ways, just like their well-developed optical counterparts. Liquid crystal is a very promising candidate for the new platform of THz devices. However, the LC based THz components face significant challenges. Here we present a total solution for half waveplate with similar design in visible range and demonstrate various high-performance THz photonic devices for further amplitude, phase, polarization modulations and even complex wavefront controls, such as Q-plate and polarization gratings. The proposed solution may pave a simple and bright road towards various liquid crystal terahertz apparatuses.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have been widely used in the manufacture of various optical components in recent years. Based on all-dielectric metasurfaces, we proposed broadband, high-efficiency (over 83%) quarter-wave plates (QWP) and half-wave plates (HWP), respectively. The structure of the HWP we designed is equivalent to the superposition of two QWPs. The proposed QWP and HWP have high transmission efficiency, with bandwidths of 1376-1624 nm and 1411-1584 nm, respectively. Furthermore, based on the three-layer all-dielectric metasurfaces structure, we proposed a reversible bifunctional metasurface, which can realize the function of QWP and the effect of light deflection. This work may be conducive to the miniaturization and integration of polarization conversion devices.

Abstract:An ultra-compact TE-pass polarizer with an ultra-broad band is proposed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally by utilizing a silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide. The metal layer of the silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide is designed to have an F-P cavity as well as a Bragg grating so that the TM-polarized light is reflected efficiently while the TE-polarized light goes through with very low loss. By utilizing the present structure with a metal Bragg grating, the designed TE-pass polarizer is with a size of as small as 0.5 × 3.1 μμm2 and the theoretical extinction ratio is as high as 15 dB over a broad band of >200 nm.
