Abstract:Utilizing the diffraction property of the output light from micro/nano fibers (MNFs), a new scheme based on a MNF array to focus optical beams with subwavelength resolution in the far field is proposed. By using the three-dimensional finite-difference beam-propagation method (FD-BPM), we investigated the diffraction interference effect of the MNFs during light propagation. The numerical stimulation demonstrates a focusing spot with FWHM of 0.43 lambda at a distance of 9 lambda from the output endface of MNF array. The effects of the characteristics of the array, the MNFs, and the input optical field on focusing are analyzed in detail.
High Efficient Metasurface for Broadband Achromatic Focusing in Visible Spectrum

Abstract:Metasurfaces are expected to realize the miniaturization of conventional refractive optics into planar structures; however, they suffer from large chromatic aberration due to the high phase dispersion of their subwavelength building blocks, limiting their real applications in imaging and displaying systems. In this paper, a high-efficient broadband achromatic metasurface (HBAM) is designed and numerically demonstrated to suppress the chromatic aberration in the continuous visible spectrum. The HBAM consists of TiO2 nanofins as the metasurface building blocks (MBBs) on a layer of glass as the substrate, providing a broadband response and high polarization conversion efficiency for circularly polarized incidences in the desired bandwidth. The phase profile of the metasurface can be separated into two parts: the wavelength -independent basic phase distribution represented by the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase, depending only on the orientations of the MBBs, and the wavelength-dependent phase dispersion part. The HBAM applies resonance tuning for compensating the phase dispersion, and further eliminates the chromatic aberration by integrating the phase compensation into the PB phase manipulation. The parameters of the HBAM structures are optimized in finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation for enhancing the efficiency and achromatic focusing performance. Using this approach, this HBAM is capable of focusing light of wavelengths covering the entire visible spectrum (from 400 nm to 700 nm) at the same focal plane with the spot sizes close to the diffraction limit. The minimum polarization conversion efficiency of most designed MBBS in such spectrum is above 20%. This design could be viable for various practical applications such as cameras and wearable optics.

Abstract:Focusing of ultrasonic waves in water plays an important role in various scenarios ranging from biomedical imaging to nondestructive testing. Acoustic metasurfaces have been largely explored for acoustic focusing, but they are generally narrowband and mainly implemented for airborne sound because of their structural complexity. Nevertheless, our previous development of metasurfaces provides a great opportunity to solve the challenges. Here, we present numerically and experimentally the broadband focusing of ultrasonic waves in water with a metasurface lens consisting of an array of deep-subwavelength sized and spaced slots. The slot widths of the metasurface are optimized based on microscopic coupled-wave theory. Due to the non-resonant arrangement, the focusing effect is demonstrated over a broad band of frequencies. The metasurface lens with simplicity and an ultra-compact size provides a feasible means for the design of thin and lightweight ultrasonic devices and is suitable for practical applications in biomedical and industrial fields.

Abstract:Silicon-based optoelectronics, using the mature silicon-based microelectronic complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) manufacturing process, is a large-scale optoelectronic integration platform that has attracted much attention. Surface plasmonic devices have also received extensive attention in the past decades, and especially the silicon-based surface plasmonic nanofocusing devices have become a research hotspot. Typical nanofocusing structures include chirped surface gratings, plasmonic Fresnel zone plate, nano-slit array, tapered metal tips. However, there occur some inevitable problems in these devices, such as the fine structure being too complex to be fabricated and too large transmission loss of metal slot waveguide. In this work, an ultra-compact hybrid surface plasmon nanofocusing device is designed and fabricated by the silicon-based optoelectronic technology, and the nanofocusing performance of the device is also experimentally verified. The hybrid surface plasmon nanofocusing devices are fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer by electron beam lithography (EBL) system. The silicon wire waveguides, tapers and the thin silicon strips in the middle of nanofocusing regions are patterned in only one step EBL. The gold layer is formed by a deposition and lift-off process, and then a partially etching process is introduced to make the thickness of the middle thin silicon strips the same as that of the gold layer. With a 1.23-mu m-long tapered structure, our nanofocusing devices focus the light field of a silicon strip waveguide into a hybrid surface plasmon waveguide, making non-resonant optical field increase 20 times in the 1550 nm near-infrared band experimentally. The entire insertion loss is about 4.6 dB, and the mode area of the nanofocusing area is about (lambda/n)(2) / 6 40 which is over 300 times smaller than that of the input silicon waveguide. When the middle slot silicon waveguide width W-Si = 120 nm, the insertion loss reaches a minimum value of 2.8 dB. In our design, we adopt the design of silicon-based hybrid plasmonic waveguides. In this design, a layer of material with low refractive index is inserted between the metal layer and the silicon layer to act as a "container" of light field, which makes this silicon-based hybrid plasmonic waveguides have less loss than the traditional metal plasmonic waveguides, and can still maintain high optical field localization. Such silicon-based hybrid surface plasmon nanofocusing devices with simple structures and excellent performances are promising alternatives for future applications in optical field manipulation, optical sensing, nonlinear optical devices, and optical phase-change storage.
Sub-wavelength Focusing Based on All-Dielectric Polarization-Independent Metalens

Abstract:We have proposed an all-dielectric polarization-independent metalens, which can be used for sub-wavelength focusing. The phase discontinuity of transmission light is produced by varying the diameter of the nanopillar. In this way, the incident light can be focused into sub-wavelength spot. Besides, finite-difference time-domain results show that near diffraction limit focusing is realized for the wavelength from 580 nm to 750 nm, which means the proposed metalens possesses a broad operation bandwidth. This all-dielectric metalens features polarization independent and broad bandwidth, and thus promises great potential for the applications of nanolithography, dense storage and biophotonics.

Abstract:An ultra-compact TE-pass polarizer with an ultra-broad band is proposed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally by utilizing a silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide. The metal layer of the silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide is designed to have an F-P cavity as well as a Bragg grating so that the TM-polarized light is reflected efficiently while the TE-polarized light goes through with very low loss. By utilizing the present structure with a metal Bragg grating, the designed TE-pass polarizer is with a size of as small as 0.5 × 3.1 μμm2 and the theoretical extinction ratio is as high as 15 dB over a broad band of >200 nm.

Abstract:A new structure is reported, which realizes the flat focusing by introducing the silicon subwavelength slits into the waveguide. The subwavelength silicon-air slits, with variable widths to match the phase compensation, makes possible to focus a plane wave. The flat lens proposed here demonstrates relatively high power gain at the focal point or two focal points. By using such a design, we demonstrate a grating coupler with an ultrashort taper of 22.5-mu m to connect a 10-mu m-wide input waveguide and a 0.5-mu m-wide output waveguide, achieving a transmission up to nearly 95.4% numerically in the communication band. The length of which is one-twentieth of that for the traditional taper. To our best knowledge, this work is the first demonstration of an ultrashort taper based on flat lens, which significantly improves the integration of the photonics integrated circuits, and indicates an effective solution for potential applications in compactly integrated micro/nano optical devices. Abstract:Nano-focusing structures based on hybrid plasmonic waveguides are likely to play a key role in strong nonlinear optical devices. Although the insertion loss is considerable, a significant nonlinear phase shift may be achieved by decreasing the nano-focusing device footprint and careful parameter optimization. Here, we study the Kerr effect in hybrid plasmonic waveguides by analyzing the mode effective area, energy velocity, and insertion loss. Particularly, by utilizing plasmonics to manipulate the effective index and mode similarity, the TM mode is reflected and absorbed, while the TE mode passes through with relatively low propagation loss. By providing a deep understanding of hybrid plasmonic waveguides for nonlinear applications, we indicate pathways for their future optimization.

Abstract:Highly efficient plasmonic nanofocusing is proposed and demonstrated in a T-shape micro-slit surrounded by multi-slits. The nanofocusing phenomenon is achieved based on the multimode interference in the micro-slit, the constructive interference in the T-shape slit, and also the multiple-beam interference of the light radiated from the multi-slits and the transmitted light from the T-shape micro-slit. Because of the large illumination areas of the incident light on the wide slit aperture in the proposed structure, a large amount of light can pass through the wide slit. This leads to a highly efficient nanofocusing. Meanwhile, the wide slit means easy fabrication. In the experiment, the focusing phenomenon in the proposed structure was successfully demonstrated with a scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) technology.

Abstract:We propose a novel miniaturized optical attenuator based on the evanescent-field coupling between two nanofibers. Benefiting from a wavelength-dependent waveguiding property of the coupled structure, a tunable attenuation with maximum extinction ratio of ~ 20 dB is demonstrated with an ultrawide optical bandwidth up to 0.7 μm in experiment. The wavelength-depended waveguiding properties of both one single nanofiber and coupled nanofibers are investigated in both theory and simulation. Using an adiabatic coupling structure, an attenuation range from − 0.16 dB to − 18.46 dB is obtained within a spectrum from 1.2 μm to 1.7 μm experimentally. Moreover, the simulated results indicate that, the attenuation only shows a slight change of ~ 0.1 dB with a lateral misalignment of 0.5 μm between the two nanofibers, indicating a high tolerance of this attenuator to the lateral misalignment. Considering the wide bandwidth as well as the ultracompact structure, this attenuator shows high potential in applications such as all-fiber optical sensing and communicating.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for miniaturized optical systems presents a significant challenge in revolutionizing their core element – the varifocal lens. Recent advancements in ultra-thin, tunable metasurface optics have introduced new approaches to achieving zoom imaging. However, current varifocal metalens have faced challenges such as low focusing efficiency, limited tunability, and complicated designs. Here, we employ the high-contrast transmit arrays (HCTA) structures to design and fabricate a polarization-independent, single-layer flexible metalens that operates at a wavelength of 940 nm. Using a uniform stretching system, we characterized its optical performance to achieve over 60 % focusing efficiency within a 0 %–25 % stretch range, while the focal length changes align with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our research also successfully demonstrated the capacity of a metalens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 to efficiently adjust imaging magnification within a 2× range, achieving imaging results that approach the diffraction limit. This research offers promising prospects for the practical use of compact and miniaturized optoelectronic devices in fields like photography, mixed reality, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Narrow bandpass filters (NBPFs) (an element capable of efficiently screening and transmitting optical signals in a specific wavelength range) are a key technology for modern photonic applications. However, the expansion of their stopband range and the realization of their polarization performance are still an open challenge. We proposed an optical Tamm state (OTS)-coupled metal grating narrow bandpass filter to efficiently design polarized NBPF with an ultra-wide stopband. The experimental results show that the polarization transmittance of the filter is as high as 97% in the communication band of 1.55 μm, with a Q factor of the peak being 344. The half-peak full width of the filter is 4.5 nm, and the stopband range is 1.1 to 20 μm, which is 32 times wider than that of the conventional technique. This research result not only provides a powerful method for extracting high-quality narrowband optical signals from background noise but also unfolds new possibilities for research and applications in fields such as quantum communication and optical biometrics.

Abstract:An ultra-compact and large-bandwidth transversal magnetic (TM) polarizer is proposed and demonstrated. Low-loss propagation of TM modes is enabled by the creation of a bandgap using nano-elliptical holes, while transverse electric (TE) modes are effectively suppressed. Theoretical analysis results show that the proposed devices have a bandwidth (BW) over 305 nm (1394 nm~1699 nm) with a polarization extinction ratio (PER) above 20 dB and an insertion loss (IL) less than 1.0 dB. This wide BW covers the S-, C-, L- and U-bands, as well as part of the O-band, within a compact total device length of only . Experimental results show IL < 1.0 dB and PER more than 20 dB in a BW of 220 nm. To our knowledge, this is currently the most compact TM polarizer on the 220 nm SOI platform, measuring , while delivering the same level of performance.

Abstract:Highly efficient plasmonic nanofocusing is numerically predicted in a single step-like microslit, which is placed on a high-index dielectric layer. Because of the high throughput of the impinging light on the wide microslit, highly efficient nanofocusing is achieved in the proposed structure based on the multimode interferences in the microslits, the constructive interference between the transmitted light and the scattered surface plasmon polaritons, and the Fabry-Perot resonator effect in the high-index dielectric layer. Compared with previous nanofocusing structures containing plenty of substructures arranged laterally, the proposed structure has a much smaller lateral dimension because of the vertical arrangement of the microslits. Abstract:An ultra-compact broadband silicon polarizing beam splitter is proposed based on a tilted nano-grating structure. A light cross coupling can be realized for transverse-magnetic mode, while the transverse-electric light can almost completely output from the through port. The length of the coupling region is only 6.8 μm, while an extinction ratio of 23.76 dB can be realized at a wavelength of 1550 nm. As a proof of concept, the device was fabricated by a commercial silicon photonic foundry. It can realize a 19.84 dB extinction ratio and an 80 nm working bandwidth with an extinction ratio of larger than 10 dB. The presented device also shows a good fabrication tolerance to the structure deviations, which is favorable for its practical applications in silicon photonics.

Abstract:An ultracompact and broadband TE-pass polarizer based on a hybrid plasmonic waveguide is proposed on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The optimized design has an active region as small as 0.8 μm, which is the shortest polarizer reported until now, and exhibits high polarization-dependent transmission imposing a TM mode cutoff while leaving the TE mode almost unaffected. Finite-difference time-domain simulation reveals an insertion loss <;1 dB and an extinction ratio of 19 dB. The extinction ratio could be further improved to 25 dB over 300-nm bandwidth, with an insertion loss of 2.5 dB.

Abstract:Abstract Metallic plasmonic probes have been successfully applied in near-field imaging, nanolithography, and Raman enhanced spectroscopy because of their ability to squeeze light into nanoscale and provide significant electric field enhancement. Most of these probes rely on nanometric alignment of incident beam and resonant structures with limited spectral bandwidth. This paper proposes and experimentally demonstrates an asymmetric fiber tip for broadband interference nanofocusing within its full optical wavelengths (500–800 nm) at the nanotip with 10 nm apex. The asymmetric geometry consisting of two semicircular slits rotates plasmonic polarization and converts the linearly polarized plasmonic mode to the radially polarized plasmonic mode when the linearly polarized beam couples to the optical fiber. The three-dimensional plasmonic modulation induces circumference interference and nanofocus of surface plasmons, which is significantly different from the nanofocusing through plasmon propagation and plasmon evolution. The plasmonic interference modulation provides fundamental insights into the plasmon engineering and has important applications in plasmon nanophotonic technologies.

Broadband and flexible acoustic focusing by metafiber bundles

Abstract:We report a broadband and flexible acoustic focusing through metafiber bundles in air, in which each metafiber consists of eight circular and narrow rectangular cavities. The fractional bandwidth of the acoustic focusing could reach about 0.2, which arises from the eigenmodes of the metafiber structure. Besides, owing to the flexible characteristic of the metafibers, the focus position can be manipulated by bending the metafiber bundles, and the metafiber bundles could bypass rigid scatterers inside the lens structure. More interestingly, the acoustic propagation and focusing directions can be changed by using a designed right-angled direction converter fabricated by the metafibers, and a waveform converter and a focusing lens of the cylindrical acoustic source are realized based on the metafiber bundles. The proposed focusing lens has the advantages of broad bandwidth, flexible structure, and high focusing performance, showing great potentials in versatile applications.
Ultra-broadband high-efficiency cross-polarization conversion and amplitude-phase manipulable multi-functional wavefront manipulation based on terahertz metasurface

Abstract:Abstract Drawing upon the physical phenomenon of polarization transformation, this paper proposes an ultra-broadband, high-efficiency linear polarization converter composed of a metallic grating, an L-shaped metallic patch, and a dielectric substrate. The polarization conversion properties have been scrutinized using the finite element numerical simulation software CST. The computational outcomes reveal that the polarization converter operates within the frequency range of 0.5 THz to 1.8 THz, exhibiting a relative bandwidth of 113%, a transmission coefficient exceeding 0.87, a polarization conversion efficiency approaching 100%, and a phase coverage spanning 360°. Furthermore, a Fabry-Perot interference model was established utilizing Matlab to corroborate the concurrence between the theoretical analysis and the numerical findings. The polarization converter metasurface amalgamates both phase and transmission amplitude variations to accomplish not only a two-dimensional multi-channel focusing lens operating between 1.55 THz and 1.65 THz, but also a spatial imaging capability utilizing transmission amplitude variation within the 0.5 THz to 1.15 THz range. The outcomes demonstrate that the devised metasurface is impervious to the polarization direction of the incident wave, exhibiting ultra-broadband and high transmission efficacy, thus providing novel insights for the versatility of terahertz wave polarization and phase manipulation.

Abstract:Tunable surface plasmon polariton launchers are highly demanded in various applications of nanophotonics for achieving controllable plasmonic signals coupling and multiplexing. Here, a tunable-focusing device with simplified structure is suggested. It consists of an array of nanofootprints. This device allows us polarization-controlled tunable plasmonic directing and focusing on the two-dimensional metallic surface. The simulation and experimental results indicate that the focal position of the excited plasmon field can be flexibly tuned between two distinct positions just by manipulating the incident polarization state. Hence, this nanofootprints structure can serve effectively as controllable plasmonic routers and demultiplexers. It also has promising application prospects in many other fields of optics.
