Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology is presented for use in free-space optical (FSO) communications accompanied by the spatial diversity reception. Using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation formats, the OFDM signals show robustness to support high spectral efficiency and compatibility with the spatial diversity reception to improve receiver sensitivity. Compared with the single-carrier QPSK signal, the OFDM-QPSK signal with 64 sub-carriers can reduce the BER from 2.87 × 10−3 to 2.98 × 10−4 at the SNR of 6 dB. Using a two-aperture spatial diversity reception with OFDM, the BER can be reduced from 2.45 × 10−3 of a single receiver to 6.10 × 10−4 under moderate turbulence conditions. Under strong turbulence, the BER of the single receiver is 2.14 × 10−2. It can be improved to 1.16 × 10−3 by using four-aperture receivers, and even 6.87 × 10−4 by using six-aperture receivers. The optimized aperture number should be selected according to channel conditions.
Spatial Diversity Detection Using Single-Photodetector Coherent Receiver Array for Free-Space Optical Communications

Abstract:The spatial diversity detection is experimentally demonstrated for free-space optical (FSO) communications using a single-photodetector (single-PD) coherent receiver array with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals in an atmospheric cell. The single-PD based on the Kramers-Kronig relation, which can recover the signal from the detected intensity has the advantages of simple structure and cost-effectiveness, and its performance is close to that of the conventional coherent receiver. The spatial diversity technology is verified using a two-aperture single-PD coherent receiver array and the impact of the atmospheric turbulence is effectively reduced. When the bit error rate (BER) is 1 x 10-3, using the dual single-PD receiver array, the received power of -45.96, -44.88, or -43.87 dBm is achieved when the temperature difference of the atmospheric cell is 0, 100, or 250 degrees C, respectively, which is 2.10, 2.16, or 2.25 dB receiver sensitivity improved compared to a single-PD receiver.

Abstract:Performance of the direct-detection coherent receiver array for free-space optical (FSO) communications is evaluated with a full-link simulation model. This FSO full-link model (from the transmitter to the receiver) is established based on the phase screen method and the coupling theory by considering the amplitude fading and the phase distortion caused by atmospheric turbulence. Via full-link simulation, bit error rates are evaluated using maximum ratio combining and equal gain combining algorithms based on single-photodetector direct-detection coherent receiver array with different receiver numbers. The improvement of spatial diversity is numerically demonstrated by comparing with the single receiver.

Abstract:An in-flight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) free-space optical (FSO) communication channel model is proposed by considering the beam deviation of the UAV under different motion states and the phase distortion caused by atmospheric turbulences. The influence of the different motion states and turbulences on the communication quality is evaluated through phase screen and Monte Carlo methods. When the average bit error rate (BER) is 10−5, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) should be increased from 13 dB to 20 dB when the tilt angle of the UAV increases from 0 to 5 mrad. An SNR of up to 20 dB is required when the variance of the wind σα2 is 2 mrad. The performance of the in-flight UAV FSO link can be effectively improved through spatial diversity receiving technology. The BER of lower than 10−5 can be obtained just with an SNR of 13 dB if the spatial diversity array with four receivers is used.

Abstract:The performances of Bit Error Rate(BER) of Free Space Optical(FSO) in strong atmospheric turbulence conditions are investigated based on Laguerre-counting model.The On-Off Keying(OOK) modulation and Maximum Likelihood(ML) detection are adopted.The BER expressions for FSO links with transmit diversity are derived as well.Numerical results and Monte Carlo simulation results are presented identically.Compared with the Single-Input Single-Output(SISO) scheme,the diversity gain by using the Multiple-Input Single-Output(MISO) scheme can compensate for the performance loss induced by the strong turbulence and background radiation.

Abstract:This paper proposes a mode-diversity space optical communication receiver for long-range space optical communication, which can compensate for the effect of atmospheric turbulence and be applied between 2 km and 16 km space optical communication with a low-cost, low-power and low-complexity feature. The receiver uses a non-mode selective photonic lantern as a mode demultiplexer, merging using an equal gain combining (EGC) algorithm and a Kramers-Kronig (KK) detection technique to accomplish the optical detection of high-dimensional modulated format signals. The performance of the receiver under different turbulent conditions is experimentally investigated, showing significant compensation for atmospheric turbulence. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves a gain of 4–5 dB at BER = 3 × 10 −3 compared to a single-mode fiber (SMF) receiver under moderately strong turbulent conditions.

Abstract:This paper first proposes and verifies two simplified mode diversity receivers (MDRs) for free-space optical (FSO) communication systems under moderate-to-strong turbulence. The MDRs are designed and implemented for coherent detection of the FSO communication system based on few-mode-fiber (FMF) coupling. The first MDR replaces the coherent receiver with a Kramers–Kronig (KK) receiver, which reduces the number of photodetectors (PDs) and high-speed analog-to-digital converters by 3/4. The second MDR realizes few-mode KK detection by utilizing a few-mode local oscillator and only one PD. This method simplifies the system of a MDR to the extreme. Experimental results show that the average received power of a FSO communication system based on six-mode fiber has approximately 6 dB gain compared with the one based on single-mode fiber (SMF) under moderate-to-strong turbulence. The two proposed MDRs have approximate performance, improving by 5 dB to 6 dB compared to SMF-based heterodyne detection under moderate-to-strong turbulence. In addition, the simplified schemes reduce the volume and the cost of the optical receiver, and it has some practical significance for FSO communication.

Abstract:FSO has some significant advantages such as bandwidths, high-data-rate of transfer and less mass, power and volume, and no regulatory restrictions for using frequencies and bandwidths. Atmospheric turbulence is an important factor that constrains the performance of FSO; most of researchers have always been in search of methods to solve this problem. In recent years, the principle and technology of adaptive optics (AO) have been applied to eliminate the influences of turbulent atmosphere. But for a long time, efforts in the traditional AO methods focus on compensating the turbulence on the pupil plane of imaging system, ignoring the differences between the imaging system and FSO. This paper presents a novel space optical receiver that adjusts the wavefront in the rear focal plane of a lens. It is different from common AO technology that system takes the maximum light energy coupled into a fiber as the estimate parameter for reconfiguration wavefront, according to demands for FSO, and realizes a high-speed wavefront compensation receiver without wavefront sensor. Based on these theories, some simulation analysis is implemented and results are compared with traditional AO, it shows that our technique has the better performances than that of general AO. Finally, the farther work and potential application on FSO are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Free space optical (FSO) communication has become a cost-effective method to provide high data rates. However, the turbulence-induced fading limits its application to short range applications. To address this, we propose a multiuser diversity (MD) FSO scheme in which the Nth best user is selected and the channel fluctuations can be effectively exploited to produce a selection diversity gain. More specifically, we first present the statistics analysis for the considered system over weak atmospheric turbulence channels. Based on these statistics, the outage probability, bit-error rate performance, and coverage are analyzed.

Abstract:Considering free-space optical communication systems, we analyze the performance of the intensity scintillation of the optical-wave propagation in the slant path under different atmospheric turbulences. Under the zero scale, we derive the log-intensity spatial covariance function of the optical-wave propagation in the slant path through the turbulent atmosphere based on the modified Rytov method. We demonstrate the relationship between the reception performance of the distributed antenna array and the aperture-averaging factor. Furthermore, we also obtain the optimum aperture diameter, number of sub-antennas, and the sub-antenna interval of the array receiver in intermediate turbulence. This study can benefit the design of the receiving system for the optical-wave propagation in the slant path through the turbulent atmosphere in free-space optical communication systems.

Abstract:The error performances of fiber-based free space optical (FSO) communications over Gamma-Gamma distributed turbulence are studied for multiple apertures receiver system. Bit-error rate (BER) performances for on-off keying (OOK) modulated direct detection fiber-based free space optical communications are derived and analyzed for equal gain combining (EGC) diversity receptions. BER performances of EGC receiver system are compared with a single monolithic aperture receiver system with the same total aperture area (same average total incident optical power on the aperture surface) for fiber-based free space optical communications. All the numerical results are also verified by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. It is found that the multiple apertures receiver system can greatly improve the system performance for fiber-based FSO communications.

Maximum ratio combining (MRC) and selection combining (SC) techniques are considered as practical schemes to mitigate the atmospheric turbulence. Bit-error rate (BER) performances for binary phase-shift keying modulated coherent detection and outage probabilities are analyzed and compared for SC diversity using analytical results and for MRC diversity through an approximation method with different numbers of receiving aperture each with the same aperture area. To show the net diversity gain of a multiple aperture receiver system, BER performances and outage probabilities of MRC and SC multiple aperture receiver systems are compared with a single monolithic aperture with the same total aperture area (same total average incident optical power) for satellite-to-ground downlink optical communications. Abstract:Spatial diversity as an effective technique to mitigate the turbulence fading has been widely utilized in free space optical (FSO) communication systems. The received signals, however, will suffer from channel correlation due to insufficient spacing between component antennas. In this paper, the new expressions of the channel correlation coefficient and specifically its components (the large- and small-scale channel correlation coefficients) for a plane wave with aperture effects are derived for horizontal link in moderate-to-strong turbulence, using a non-Kolmogorov spectrum that has a generalized power law in the range of 3-4 instead of the fixed classical Kolmogorov power law of 11/3. And then the influence of power law variations on the channel correlation coefficient and its components are analysed. The numerical results indicated that various value of the power law lead to varying effects on the channel correlation coefficient and its components. This work will help with the further investigation on the fading correlation in spatial diversity systems.

Abstract:The performance of multi-hop free space optics(FSO)is investigated using serial decode-and-forward(DF)relay transmission.While researching the optical channel fading model,a statistical model for the optical intensity fluctuation at the receiver due to the combined effects of strong turbulence-induced fading,misalignment error and pass loss is presented.For given weather and misalignment conditions,the end-to-end outage probability of serial DF multi-hop FSO is derived and a closed-form analytical expression is got.Numerical results show that the serial DF multi-hop transmission is a promising technology to increase the performance of FSO.The derived analytical expression shows excellent agreement with the simulation results.

Abstract:Wide field-of-view (FOV) free-space receivers are promising for optical wireless communications, which can reduce the requirements on aiming and tracking. However, the FOV is limited by some tradeoffs of the receiver's components employing conventional optical devices. In this paper, we proposed a wide FOV optical receiver based on the extraordinary optical transmission mechanism of surface plasmons on a dielectric-metal interface. The proposed receiver has a flat response over a relative wide range of incidence angles. Moreover, the received optical energy density has been enhanced greatly compared to the incidence. Related mechanisms as well as the optimization method are investigated. Potential applications are also discussed.
Self-Adaptive Integrated Photonic Receiver for Turbulence Compensation in Free Space Optical Links

Abstract:In Free Space Optical (FSO) communication systems, atmospheric turbulence distorts the propagating beams, causing a random fading in the received power. This perturbation can be compensated using a multi-aperture receiver that samples the distorted wavefront on different points and adds the various signals coherently. In this work, we report on an adaptive optical receiver that compensates in real time for scintillation in FSO links. The optical front-end of the receiver is entirely integrated in a silicon photonic chip hosting a 2D Optical Antenna Array and a self-adaptive analog Programmable Optical Processor made of a mesh of tunable Mach-Zehnder interferometers. The photonic chip acts as an adaptive interface to couple turbulent FSO beams to single-mode guided optics, enabling energy and cost-effective operation, scalability to systems with a larger number of apertures, modulation-format and data-protocol transparency, and pluggability with commercial fiber optics transceivers. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed receiver with optical signals at a data rate of 10 Gbit/s transmitted in indoor FSO links where different turbulent conditions, even stronger than those expected in outdoor links of hundreds of meters, are reproduced.

Recent Progress in Wide Field-of-view Optical Receivers

Abstract:The wide field-of-view (FOV) optical receiver has many advantages in optical wireless communication, sensing and detection. However, the FOV is limited by some tradeoffs of the receiver’s components employing conventional optical devices. Furthermore, present mechanisms to extend the FOV are not effective. To realize the wide FOV receiver effectively, we propose surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) as the potential candidate. Two examples are presented to lively illustrate SPPs’ striking power to offer unexpected solutions to conventional problems. It is shown that unusual conditions should be explored to make use of SPPs under some circumstances. Excitations of localized SPPs, which are independent of the incidence angle, are suggested as the mechanism for the wide FOV receiver. Some progress in the optimization of SPPs’ excitation at oblique incidence is also reported.

Abstract:The performance of free-space optical (FSO) communication suffers from atmospheric turbulence, which mainly results in scintillation and phase fluctuations to optical signal. In this paper, we study the bit error rate (BER) performance of coherent FSO system employing phase compensation and spatial diversity. Based on weak fluctuation theory, the amplitude fading and phase fluctuation induced by atmospheric turbulence are assumed to follow log-normal model and Gaussian distribution, respectively. Distinct from previous works, a new closed-form expression for signal fading at the receiver is derived. Then the impact of various compensating parameters is examined on the BER performance of the system, including the normalized receiver aperture diameter and the number of phase compensation modes. The optimal compensation parameters are found showing that the FSO coherent system can obtain the minimum BER. Furthermore, we explore the potential of spatial diversity, particularly receiver diversity to further enhance the system performance. Numerical results show that the addition of phase compensation and diversity techniques can largely reduce the impact of atmospheric turbulence.
