Abstract:In an all-optical double-hop free-space optical communication system, the outage probability and bit error rate are analyzed using a composite channel. The model involves atmospheric attenuation, atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, and fiber coupling efficiency. Based on analysis of the channel model and amplifier spontaneous emission noise, the outage probability and bit error rate are obtained. For an all-optical double-hop link, fiber coupling efficiency has an important impact on outage probability, especially at relatively short total link length. By compensating for three terms of wavefront distortions, the system outage probability significantly decreases. The communication performance is further improved by optimizing the receiving aperture diameter and beam width.

Abstract:The spatial diversity detection is experimentally demonstrated for free-space optical (FSO) communications using a single-photodetector (single-PD) coherent receiver array with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals in an atmospheric cell. The single-PD based on the Kramers-Kronig relation, which can recover the signal from the detected intensity has the advantages of simple structure and cost-effectiveness, and its performance is close to that of the conventional coherent receiver. The spatial diversity technology is verified using a two-aperture single-PD coherent receiver array and the impact of the atmospheric turbulence is effectively reduced. When the bit error rate (BER) is 1 x 10-3, using the dual single-PD receiver array, the received power of -45.96, -44.88, or -43.87 dBm is achieved when the temperature difference of the atmospheric cell is 0, 100, or 250 degrees C, respectively, which is 2.10, 2.16, or 2.25 dB receiver sensitivity improved compared to a single-PD receiver.

Abstract:Performance of the direct-detection coherent receiver array for free-space optical (FSO) communications is evaluated with a full-link simulation model. This FSO full-link model (from the transmitter to the receiver) is established based on the phase screen method and the coupling theory by considering the amplitude fading and the phase distortion caused by atmospheric turbulence. Via full-link simulation, bit error rates are evaluated using maximum ratio combining and equal gain combining algorithms based on single-photodetector direct-detection coherent receiver array with different receiver numbers. The improvement of spatial diversity is numerically demonstrated by comparing with the single receiver.
Performance Improvement of the Free-Space Optical Communication Link Using Spatial Diversity Reception-Assisted OFDM Signals

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology is presented for use in free-space optical (FSO) communications accompanied by the spatial diversity reception. Using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation formats, the OFDM signals show robustness to support high spectral efficiency and compatibility with the spatial diversity reception to improve receiver sensitivity. Compared with the single-carrier QPSK signal, the OFDM-QPSK signal with 64 sub-carriers can reduce the BER from 2.87 × 10−3 to 2.98 × 10−4 at the SNR of 6 dB. Using a two-aperture spatial diversity reception with OFDM, the BER can be reduced from 2.45 × 10−3 of a single receiver to 6.10 × 10−4 under moderate turbulence conditions. Under strong turbulence, the BER of the single receiver is 2.14 × 10−2. It can be improved to 1.16 × 10−3 by using four-aperture receivers, and even 6.87 × 10−4 by using six-aperture receivers. The optimized aperture number should be selected according to channel conditions.

Abstract:A free-space optical communication system using non-mode-selective photonic lantern (PL) based coherent receiver is studied. Based on the simulation of photon distribution, the power distribution at the single-mode fiber end of the PL is quantitatively described as a truncated Gaussian distribution over a simplex. The signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), bit-error rate (BER), and outage probability of PL based receiver using selection combining (SC), equal-gain combining (EGC), and maximal-ratio combining (MRC) over Gamma-Gamma turbulence channels are analyzed and compared with the single-mode fiber (SMF) receiver and multimode fiber (MMF) receiver. We demonstrate that EGC is the most suitable combining for PL based receiver because the PL power distribution has limited influence on the BER and outage probability when EGC is used and can greatly affect the BER and outage probability when SC is used. Numerical results show that PL based receiver with EGC requires 6 dB less SNR than the SMF receiver and 5.5 dB less SNR than the MMF receiver at BER of 10−6 in moderate turbulence.

Abstract:A multimode optical receiver for free space optical communications (FSOC) based on a photonic lantern and adaptive optics coherent beam combining (CBC) of the lantern's single-mode outputs is proposed and demonstrated for the first time. The use of optical coherent combining in fiber serves to increase the signal to noise ratio compared to similar receivers based on electrically combined signals, and represents an all-fiber approach to low-order adaptive optics. This optical receiver is demonstrated using a photonic lantern with three outputs, fibre couplers and active phase locking, and further investigated under atmospheric conditions with and without turbulence.

Abstract:The nonlinear effects in single-mode fiber and the constraints in device technology, time division multiplexing and wavelength division multiplexing cannot increase the capacity of optical fiber communication system unlimitedly. The development of space division multiplexing technology has increased the capacity of existing optical fiber communication systems by at least an order of magnitude. With the continuous improvement of transmission rate and system bandwidth in the long-haul communication, low cost and small size are also regarded as important factors in the future. In this work, the transmission performance of the low-cost self-coherent receiver and the mature coherent receiver in the long-haul mode division multiplexing system is compared. In the 32-Gbaud 6-mode dual-polarization QPSK transmission system with a fiber length of 80 km as the single span, two receiver schemes are compared considering the same configurations of the transmitter and the optical fiber link components. Compared the use of eight photodetectors integrated in the coherent receiver, the Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver only requires two photodetectors to demodulate the dual-polarization transmission, while the phase recovery algorithm based on Hilbert transform in the KK receiver will increase the complexity of digital signal processing. Numerical results indicate that the KK receiver scheme has the advantages of lower cost and more compact size, and shows the similar performance as the coherent receiver for the transmission of less than 2500 km, despite the requirement of larger transmitted power and algorithm complexity. It can also be concluded that, self-coherent receiver based on the KK algorithm can be a complementary detection solution to the coherent receiver for next-generation long-haul transmission networks with low-cost transceivers.

Abstract:Multimode receivers based on spatial or modal diversity are promising architectures to mitigate in real time the atmospheric turbulence effects for free space optical (FSO) communications. In this paper, we evaluate and comment on the dynamical communication performances of a FSO mode diversity receiver, based on a spatial demultiplexer and a silicon photonic coherent combiner, for an optical link from a GEO satellite to an optical ground station (OGS). We simulate time series of distorted wavefronts received by the OGS and we show numerically that the coherent combination of spatial modes mitigate the signal fading compared to a conventional single mode fiber (SMF) receiver. We verify this property in a laboratory environment by generating the wavefronts corresponding to the use case with an atmospheric propagation channel emulator. Then we modulate the optical carrier prior to the wavefront emulator with 10G OOK and DPSK data sequences to measure the BER performance of the proposed receiver during the time series emulation. Finally, we study and comment on the influence of the number of modes combined and the wavelength multiplexing on the BER performances. We prove that the mode diversity receiver provide a higher collection efficiency, has better BER performances and much less synchronization losses.

Abstract:A modulating retro-reflector (MRR) with optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensation is presented and demonstrated to mitigate the turbulence-induced channel distortion for high-speed coherent free-space optical (FSO) communications. The impact of the turbulence on the beam spot, the phase fluctuation and the bit error rate (BER) is analyzed for the MRR FSO link carrying quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals with spatial or single-mode fiber (SMF)-based OPC. The mitigation of the atmospheric turbulence is verified by comparing the transmission performance of the MRR FSO links with and without OPC. The compensation using SMF-based OPC is experimentally demonstrated in a turbulence-tunable atmospheric chamber. The BER is improved by two orders of magnitude in the turbulent channel with the temperature difference of 250 degrees C, and the power penalty is reduced by about 2.0 dB, which agree well with the simulation results. A larger receiving aperture size will improve the compensation effect

Abstract:A novel amplified modulating retro-reflector (AMRR) based on a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is proposed and a bidirectional free-space optical communication (FSO) system including both downstream and upstream links is experimentally demonstrated with only a single light source using this AMRR. The RSOA-based AMRR can provide a net gain more than 4dB and support the modulation bit rate up to 1.25Gbit/s. The bidirectional FSO transmission performance is evaluated by observing eye diagrams and measuring bit error rate (BER) results of both 10-Gbit/s DPSK downstream and 1.25-Gbit/s OOK upstream signals. The factors that limit the modulation bit rate and transmission quality are analyzed. The power penalties of both links are less than 0.69dB in the bidirectional FSO system at the BER of 1×10-3.

Abstract:Wide field-of-view (FOV) free-space receivers are promising for optical wireless communications, which can reduce the requirements on aiming and tracking. However, the FOV is limited by some tradeoffs of the receiver's components employing conventional optical devices. In this paper, we proposed a wide FOV optical receiver based on the extraordinary optical transmission mechanism of surface plasmons on a dielectric-metal interface. The proposed receiver has a flat response over a relative wide range of incidence angles. Moreover, the received optical energy density has been enhanced greatly compared to the incidence. Related mechanisms as well as the optimization method are investigated. Potential applications are also discussed.

Abstract:This paper proposes a mode-diversity space optical communication receiver for long-range space optical communication, which can compensate for the effect of atmospheric turbulence and be applied between 2 km and 16 km space optical communication with a low-cost, low-power and low-complexity feature. The receiver uses a non-mode selective photonic lantern as a mode demultiplexer, merging using an equal gain combining (EGC) algorithm and a Kramers-Kronig (KK) detection technique to accomplish the optical detection of high-dimensional modulated format signals. The performance of the receiver under different turbulent conditions is experimentally investigated, showing significant compensation for atmospheric turbulence. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves a gain of 4–5 dB at BER = 3 × 10 −3 compared to a single-mode fiber (SMF) receiver under moderately strong turbulent conditions.

Abstract:We investigate the performance of free-space optical communication systems in the presence of atmospheric turbulence to assess the advantages that a coherent communication system can bring with respect to a conventional intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) system. The perspective is an information-theoretic one, hence we evaluate the mutual information and the corresponding outage probability of both channels, with various traditional symbol constellations, as a pragmatic approximation to the capacity, or to the outage capacity, of those channels. In addition, we analyze non-uniform symbol constellations to evaluate the possible shaping gain that can be achieved under different channel conditions. We propose a method to quantify the gain that the coherent solution can achieve, in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), so that it can be compared, on a techno-economical basis, against the higher cost that it implies.

Recent Progress in Wide Field-of-view Optical Receivers

Abstract:The wide field-of-view (FOV) optical receiver has many advantages in optical wireless communication, sensing and detection. However, the FOV is limited by some tradeoffs of the receiver’s components employing conventional optical devices. Furthermore, present mechanisms to extend the FOV are not effective. To realize the wide FOV receiver effectively, we propose surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) as the potential candidate. Two examples are presented to lively illustrate SPPs’ striking power to offer unexpected solutions to conventional problems. It is shown that unusual conditions should be explored to make use of SPPs under some circumstances. Excitations of localized SPPs, which are independent of the incidence angle, are suggested as the mechanism for the wide FOV receiver. Some progress in the optimization of SPPs’ excitation at oblique incidence is also reported.

Abstract:In order to extend advantages of optical fiber communication such as optical amplification and processing to space optical detection, optical wireless communication and personal communication, it is necessary to receive weak optical signals from free-space into optical fibers in such a wide Field-of-view (FOV). In that case, FOV can be enlarged to tens of degrees; and then, half space could be received. However, this is not easy because the fiber's numerical aperture is usually small. Wide FOV receiver feeders for optical signals from free-space are categorized into conventional feeder and fiber-based feeder in this paper, with the latter expounded emphatically. Analysis shows that it is difficult to improve the sensitivity and FOV of the conventional feeder, whose FOV is limited by the optical system and conventional filters, at the same time. The fiber-based feeder, however, has a great potential to eliminate the limitations in the conventional feeder, and to realize a non-scanning wide FOV feeder. Thus, the latter is the development trend and has a wide application prospect. The realization of wide FOV receiver for optical signals from free-space will accelerate the development of optical wireless communication, personal communication and space optical detection, as well as increase the bandwidth of space communications; it also has a great influence on future communication.
Self-Adaptive Integrated Photonic Receiver for Turbulence Compensation in Free Space Optical Links

Abstract:In Free Space Optical (FSO) communication systems, atmospheric turbulence distorts the propagating beams, causing a random fading in the received power. This perturbation can be compensated using a multi-aperture receiver that samples the distorted wavefront on different points and adds the various signals coherently. In this work, we report on an adaptive optical receiver that compensates in real time for scintillation in FSO links. The optical front-end of the receiver is entirely integrated in a silicon photonic chip hosting a 2D Optical Antenna Array and a self-adaptive analog Programmable Optical Processor made of a mesh of tunable Mach-Zehnder interferometers. The photonic chip acts as an adaptive interface to couple turbulent FSO beams to single-mode guided optics, enabling energy and cost-effective operation, scalability to systems with a larger number of apertures, modulation-format and data-protocol transparency, and pluggability with commercial fiber optics transceivers. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed receiver with optical signals at a data rate of 10 Gbit/s transmitted in indoor FSO links where different turbulent conditions, even stronger than those expected in outdoor links of hundreds of meters, are reproduced.

Abstract:We present an hybrid fiber link combining effective optical frequency transfer and evaluation of performances with a self-synchronized two-way comparison. It enables us to detect the round-trip fiber noise and each of the forward and backward one-way fiber noises simultaneously. The various signals acquired with this setup allow us to study quantitatively several properties of optical fiber links. We check the reciprocity of the accumulated noise forth and back over a bi-directional fiber to the level of $3.1(\pm 3.9)\times 10^{-20}$ based on a 160000s continuous data. We also analyze the noise correlation between two adjacent fibers and show the first experimental evidence of interferometric noise at very low Fourier frequency. We estimate redundantly and consistently the stability and accuracy of the transferred optical frequency over 43~km at $4\times 10^{-21}$ level after 16 days of integration and demonstrate that frequency comparison with instability as low as $8\times 10^{-18}$ would be achievable with uni-directional fibers in urban area.
