Abstract:Let p be normal singularity of the 2-dimensional Stein space V. Let pi : M -> V be a minimal good resolution of V, such that the irreducible components A(i) of A = pi(-1)(p) are nonsingular and have only normal crossings. Associated to A is weighted dual graph Gamma which, along with the genera of the A(i), fully describes the topology and differentiable structure of A and the topological and differentiable nature of the embedding of A in M. It is well known that the simplest Gorenstein non-complete intersection singularities of dimension two are exactly those minimal elliptic singularities with fundamental cycle self intersection number -5. In this paper we classify all weighted dual graphs of these singularities. In particular, we prove that there is no integral homology link structure in the class of simplest Gorenstein non-complete intersection singularities of dimension two.

Abstract:A local bifurcation analysis of a high-dimensional dynamical system dxdt=f(x) is performed using a good deformation of the polynomial mapping P:Cn→Cn. This theory is used to construct geometric aspects of the resolution of multiple zeros of the polynomial vector field P(x). Asymptotic bifurcation rules are derived from Grothendieck's theory of residuals. Following the Coxeter–Dynkin classification, the singularity graph is constructed. A detailed study of three types of multidimensional mappings with a large symmetry group has been carried out, namely: 1. A linear singularity (behaves similarly to a one-dimensional complex analysis theory); 2. The lattice singularity (generalized the linear and resembling regular crystal growth models); 3. The fan-shaped singularity (can be split radially like nuclear fission and fusion models).

Abstract:In this paper, we study the family of quadratic Riccati differential systems. Our goal is to obtain the complete topological classification of this family on the Poincaré disk compactification of the plane. The family was partially studied before but never from a truly global viewpoint. Our approach is global and we use geometry to achieve our goal. The geometric analysis we perform is via the presence of two invariant parallel straight lines in any generic Riccati system. We obtain a total of 119 topologically distinct phase portraits for this family. Furthermore, we give the complete bifurcation diagram in the 12-dimensional space of parameters of this family in terms of invariant polynomials, meaning that it is independent of the normal forms in which the systems may be presented. This bifurcation diagram provides an algorithm to decide for any given quadratic system in any form it may be presented, whether it is a Riccati system or not, and in case it is to provide its phase portrait.

On the topological classification of complex plane curve singularities

Abstract:This final degree project is devoted to study the topological classification of complex plane curves. These are subsets of $\mathbb{C}^2$ that can be described by an equation $f(x,y)=0$. Loosely speaking, curves are said to be equivalent in a topological sense whenever they are ambient homeomorphic, i.e., there exists an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the ambient space carrying one curve to the other. The project's aim is to develop operative and clear conditions to determine whether two curves are equivalent. Curves will be shown to be decomposable into branches: sets that can be explicitly parametrised in the form $x=\phi(t), y=\psi(t)$. These parametric expressions will be analysed to extract a complete numerical invariant for the classification of branches: the Puiseux characteristic. The intermediate key result to lend this notion with topological weight is that a branch can be completely described through its associated knot, arising from the intersection of the branch with a small enough 3-sphere. The combination of these above-mentioned facts will then culminate in the project's most powerful result, which assures that two curves are equivalent if and only if their branches share the same Puiseux characteristics and intersection numbers.

Quadratic differentials with prescribed singularities

Abstract:The local invariants of a meromorphic quadratic differential on a compact Riemann surface are the orders of zeros and poles, and the residues at the poles of even orders. The main result of this paper is that with few exceptions, every pattern of local invariants can be obtained by a quadratic differential on some Riemann surface. The exceptions are completely classified and only occur in genera zero and one. Moreover, in the case of a nonconnected stratum, we show that, with three exceptions in genus one, every invariants can be realized in each connected component of the stratum. These results are obtained using the flat metric induced by the differentials. We give an application by bounding the number of disjoint cylinders on a primitive quadratic differential.

Abstract: In this paper we derive an upper bound for the degree of the strict invariant algebraic curve of a polynomial system in the complex project plane under generic condition. The results are obtained through the algebraic multiplicities of the system at the singular points. A method for computing the algebraic multiplicity using Newton polygon is also presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the local behavior of nonnegative solutions of fractional semilinear equations (−∆)u = u with an isolated singularity, where σ ∈ (0, 1) and n n−2σ < p < n+2σ n−2σ . We first use blow up method and a Liouville type theorem to derive an upper bound. Then we establish a monotonicity formula and a sufficient condition for removable singularity to give a classification of the isolated singularities. On Solutions for Singular Toda System on Riemann Surfaces with Boundary

Abstract:This paper studies solutions to a singular $SU(3)$ Toda system with linear source terms on a compact Riemann surface $\Sigma$ with smooth boundaries $\partial\Sigma$. We establish the existence of solutions when the parameters are not critical, assuming that Euler characteristic $\chi(\Sigma)<1$ via analyzing the sublevels. Furthermore, we find a sufficient condition that ensures multiple solutions for generic potentials by Morse inequalities and a transversality theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a full description of the critical graph of the quadratic differential $\varpi_{a,\theta}$ defined on the Riemann sphere $\widehat{% %TCIMACRO{\U{2102} }% %BeginExpansion \mathbb{C} %EndExpansion }$ by $\varpi_{a,\theta}=-e^{2i\theta}\left( z-a\right) \left( z^{2}-1\right) dz^{2},$ where $\theta\in% %TCIMACRO{\U{211d} }% %BeginExpansion \mathbb{R} %EndExpansion ,$ and $a\in% %TCIMACRO{\U{2102} }% %BeginExpansion \mathbb{C} %EndExpansion .$. We prove that the existence and the number of short trajectories of $\varpi_{a,\theta}$ depend on the location of $a$ in certain curves defined on the complex plane as the level sets of some harmonic functions. More focus will be to the cases $\theta\in\left\{ 0,\pi/4\right\} .$ We investigate these classifications to study an inverse spectral problem related to the complex cubic oscillator for Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal F$ be a foliation on a smooth projective surface $S$ over the complex number $\mathbb{C}$. We introduce three birational non-negative invariants $c_1^2(\mathcal F)$, $c_2(\mathcal F)$ and $\chi(\mathcal F)$, called the Chern numbers. If the foliation $\mathcal F$ is not of general type, the first Chern number $c_1^2(\mathcal F)=0$, and $c_2(\mathcal F)=\chi(\mathcal F)=0$ except when $\mathcal F$ is induced by a non-isotrivial fibration of genus $g=1$. If $\mathcal F$ is of general type, we obtain a slope inequality when $\mathcal F$ is algebraically integral. As a corollary, $\mathcal F$ is always transcendental if the slope is less than $2$. On the other hand, we also prove three sharp Noether type inequalities if $\mathcal F$ is of general type. As applications, we obtain a criterion for foliations to be transcendental using Noether type inequalities, and we also give a partial positive answer to the question on the lower bound on the volume of a foliation of general type.

Abstract:In this paper, we study polar quotients and Łojasiewicz exponents of plane curve singularities, which are {\em not necessarily reduced}. We first show that the polar quotients is a topological invariant. We next prove that the Łojasiewicz gradient exponent can be computed in terms of the polar quotients, and so it is also a topological invariant. As an application, we give effective estimates of the Łojasiewicz exponents in the gradient and classical inequalities of polynomials in two (real or complex) variables.

Abstract:A topology-intrinsic connection between the stabilities of Fermi surfaces (FSs) and topological insulators/superconductors (TIs/TSCs) is revealed. First, through revealing the topological difference of the roles played by the time-reversal (or particle-hole) symmetry respectively on FSs and TIs/TSCs, a one-to-one relation between the topological types of FSs and TIs/TSCs is rigorously derived by two distinct methods with one relying on the direct evaluation of topological invariants and the other on K theory. Secondly, we propose and prove a general index theorem that relates the topological charge of FSs on the natural boundary of a TI/TSC to its bulk topological number. In the proof, FSs of all codimensions for all symmetry classes and topological types are systematically constructed by Dirac matrices. Moreover, implications of the general index theorem on the boundary quasiparticles are also addressed.

Abstract:We give sufficient conditions for the existence of one or two limit cycles of singular Lienard systems through the construction of a Poincare–Bendixson domain. With the help of the theory of rotated vector fields,we develop a method to compute bifurcation value at Saddle-node bifurcation of limit cycles and homoclinic or symmetric heteroclinic bifurcations. We also present application examples and prove the existence of duck cycles.

Abstract:In the framework of the Cartan classification of Hamiltonians, a kind of topological classification of Fermi surfaces is established in terms of topological charges. The topological charge of a Fermi surface depends on its codimension and the class to which its Hamiltonian belongs. It is revealed that six types of topological charges exist, and they form two groups with respect to the chiral symmetry, with each group consisting of one original charge and two descendants. It is these nontrivial topological charges which lead to the robust topological protection of the corresponding Fermi surfaces against perturbations that preserve discrete symmetries.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the center-focus problem for a generalized cubic Kukles system with a nilpotent singular point, which consists of a cubic system with an extra 4th-order term. A complete classification is given on the center conditions which are explicitly expressed in term of the system parameters. A total of 15 cases are obtained, among them 4 for the generalized cubic Kukles system and 12 for the cubic Kukles system, with one common for both. One of the center conditions is analytic. Moreover, it is shown that 8 small-amplitude limit cycles can bifurcate in the neighborhood of the singular point for the generalized cubic Kukles system, while only 7 small-amplitude limit cycles can exist around the singular point for the cubic Kukles system. The center-focus problem for the generalized cubic Kukles system with a nilpotent origin is thoroughly solved.
