Abstract:An example is given to show that for the Cauchy problem of n×n homogeneous linearly degenerate quasilinear hyperbolic systems with periodic initial data, when n>2, C1 solutions may blow up in a finite time, no matter how small and smooth the initial data are.

Abstract: For the first order 1D $n\times n$ quasilinear strictly hyperbolic system $\partial_tu+F(u)\partial_xu=0$ with $u(x, 0)=\varepsilon u_0(x)$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is small, $u_0(x)\not\equiv 0$ and $u_0(x)\in C_0^2(\mathbb R)$, when at least one eigenvalue of $F(u)$ is genuinely nonlinear, it is well-known that on the finite blowup time $T_{\varepsilon}$, the derivatives $\partial_{t,x}u$ blow up while the solution $u$ keeps to be small. For the 1D scalar equation or $2\times 2$ strictly hyperbolic system (corresponding to $n=1, 2$), if the smooth solution $u$ blows up in finite time, then the blowup mechanism can be well understood (i.e., only the blowup of $\partial_{t,x}u$ happens). In the present paper, for the $n\times n$ ($n\geq 3$) strictly hyperbolic system with a class of large initial data, we are concerned with the blowup mechanism of smooth solution $u$ on the finite blowup time and the detailed singularity behaviours of $\partial_{t,x}u$ near the blowup point. Our results are based on the efficient decomposition of $u$ along the different characteristic directions, the suitable introduction of the modulated coordinates and the global weighted energy estimates.

Abstract:For the 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(\nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients independent of the solution $u$, a blowup result for small data solutions has been established in [1,2] provided that the null condition does not hold and a generic nondegeneracy condition on the initial data is fulfilled. In this paper, we are concerned with the more general 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients that depend simultaneously on $u$ and $\nabla u$. When the null condition does not hold and a suitable nondegeneracy condition on the initial data is satisfied, we show that smooth small data solutions blow up in finite time. Furthermore, we derive an explicit expression for the lifespan and establish the blowup mechanism.

Abstract:For the first order 1D n×n quasilinear strictly hyperbolic system ∂tu+F(u)∂xu= 0 with u(x,0)= εu0(x), where ε > 0 is small, u0(x) 6≡ 0 and u0(x) ∈ C 0(R), when at least one eigenvalue of F(u) is genuinely nonlinear, it is well-known that on the finite blowup time Tε , the derivatives ∂t,xu blow up while the solution u keeps to be small. Abstract:For 2-D quasilinear wave equations with cubic nonlinearity and small initial data, we not only show that the solutions blow up in finite time but also give a complete asymptotic expansion of the lifespan of classical solutions. Hence we solve a problem posed by S. Alinhac and A. Hoshiga. Moreover, as an application of this result, we prove the blowup of solutions for the nonlinear vibrating membrane equations.

Abstract:In this paper we mainly investigate the initial value problem of the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations. We first present a new blow-up result to the system for a special class of smooth initial data by using the rotational invariant properties of the system. Then, we prove that the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations are ill-posed in critical Besov spaces by a contradiction argument. Finally, we verify the system possesses a class of peakon solutions in the sense of distributions.

Abstract:This paper investigates the properties of nonnegative solutions of a quasilinear degenerate parabolic system {ut−div(|∇u|p−2∇u)=a∫Ωvα(x,t)dx,vt−div(|∇v|q−2∇v)=b∫Ωuβ(x,t)dx with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain Ω⊂RN(N≥1), where p,q>2, α,β≥1, and a,b>0 are positive constants. Under appropriate hypotheses, we first establish the local existence and uniqueness of solutions, then we show that whether or not the solution blows up in finite time depends on the initial data and the relations between αβ and (p−1)(q−1). In the special case of α=q−1 and β=p−1, we conclude that the solution exists globally if ∫Ωϕp−1dx∫Ωψq−1dx≤1/(ab), while if ∫Ωϕp−1dx∫Ωψq−1dx>1/(ab) then the solution blows up in finite time. Here ϕ(x) and ψ(x) denote the unique solution of the following elliptic problem −div(|∇ϕ|p−2∇ϕ)=1 in Ω, ϕ(x)|∂Ω=0 and −div(|∇ψ|q−2∇ψ)=1 in Ω, ψ(x)|∂Ω=0, respectively.

Abstract:This paper investigates the blow-up and global existence of nonnegative solutions of the system ut=Δum+a‖v‖αp,vt=Δvn+b‖u‖βq,(x,t)∈Ω×(0,T) with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary data, where Ω⊂RN is a bounded domain with smooth boundary ∂Ω, m,n>1, α,β⩾1, p,q,a,b>0 and ‖·‖αα≡∫Ω|·|αdx. It is proved that if pq<mn every nonnegative solution is global, whereas if pq>mn, there exist both global and blow-up nonnegative solutions. When pq=mn, we show that if the domain is sufficiently small, every nonnegative solution is global while if the domain is large enough that is, if it contains a sufficiently large ball, there exists no global solution. In particular, when p=n=α, q=m=β, we show that every positive solution exists globally iff ∫Ωϕ(x)dx⩽1/ab, where ϕ(x) is the unique positive solution of the linear elliptic problem −Δϕ(x)=1, x∈Ω; ϕ(x)=0, x∈∂Ω.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study an initial and homogeneous boundary value problem to a quasilinear hyperbolic equation with a p(x, t)-Laplacian and a positive initial energy. The authors prove that the solution blows up in a finite time under some conditions on the initial value, the exponents and the coefficients in the equation. The results generalize and improve that of S.N. Antonsev (2011) [6]. Besides, the conditions of positivity of the integral to the initial data and the boundedness of p(t)(x, t) are removed. Abstract:For a kind of quasilinear hyperbolic systems in several space variables whose coefficient matrices commute each other, by means of normalized coordinates, formulas of wave decomposition and pointwise decay estimates, the global existence of classical solution to the Cauchy problem for small and decaying initial data is obtained, under hypotheses of weak linear degeneracy and weakly strict hyperbolicity.

Abstract:This paper investigates the qualitative properties of solutions to certain quasilinear parabolic equations. Under appropriate conditions, we obtain that the solution either exists globally or blows up in finite time by making use of the energy method and subsolution techniques. We find out that the behavior of solution heavily depends on the sign and the growth rate of the nonlinear reaction term and the nonlinear flux through boundary at infinity.

Abstract:This paper deals with the blow-up properties of solutions to a degenerate parabolic system coupled via nonlinear boundary flux. Firstly, we construct the self-similar supersolution and subsolution to obtain the critical global existence curve. Secondly, we establish the precise blow-up rate estimates for solutions which blow up in a finite time. Finally, we investigate the localization of blow-up points. The critical curve of Fujita type is conjectured with the aid of some new results.

Abstract:For a class of special three-dimensional quasilinear wave equations, we study the blowup mechanism of classical solutions. More precisely, under the nondegenerate conditions, any radially symmetric solution with small initial data is shown to develop singularities in the second order derivaties while the first order derivatives and itself remain continuous, moreover the blowup of solution is of “cusp type”.

Abstract:This paper deals with blow-up solutions to a nonlinear hyperbolic equation with variable exponent of nonlinearities. By constructing a new control function and using energy inequalities, the authors obtain the lower bound estimate of the L2 norm of the solution. Furthermore, the concavity arguments are used to prove the nonexistence of solutions; at the same time, an estimate of the upper bound of blow-up time is also obtained. This result extends and improves those of [1], [2].
