Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.

Abstract:By finding all integral points on certain elliptic and hyperelliptic curves we completely solve the Diophantine equation $\binom{n}{k}=\binom{m}{l}+d$ for $-3\leq d\leq 3$ and $(k,l)\in\{(2,3),\; (2,4),\;(2,5),\; (2,6),\; (2,8),\; (3,4),\; (3,6),\; (4,6), \; (4,8)\}.$ Moreover, we present some other observations of computational and theoretical nature concerning the title equation.

Abstract:For relatively prime natural numbers $a$ and $b$, we study the two equations $ax+by = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ and $ax+by+1= (a-1)(b-1)/2$, which arise from the study of cyclotomic polynomials. Previous work showed that exactly one equation has a nonnegative solution, and the solution is unique. Our first result gives criteria to determine which equation is used for a given pair $(a,b)$. We then use the criteria to study the sequence of equations used by the pair $(a_n/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})}, a_{n+1}/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})})$ from several special sequences $(a_n)_{n\geq 1}$. Finally, fixing $k \in \mathbb{N}$, we investigate the periodicity of the sequence of equations used by the pair $(k/\gcd{(k, n)}, n/\gcd{(k, n)})$ as $n$ increases.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:In this paper we examine the diophantine equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ where $k$ is a positive integer $\geq 2$, and consider its applications. While the complete solution of the equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ in positive rational numbers is already known when $k=2$ or $3$, till now only one numerical solution of the equation in positive rational numbers has been published when $k=4$, and no nontrivial solution is known when $k \geq 5$. We describe a method of generating infinitely many positive rational solutions of the equation when $k=4$. We use the positive rational solutions of the equation with $k=2,\, 3$ or 4 to produce numerical curios involving square roots, cube roots and fourth roots, and as another application of these solutions, we show how to construct examples of geometric series with an interesting property.

Abstract:In this paper, we study entire solutions and meromorphic solutions of the following Fermat Diophantine functional equations h( z_1, z_2) f+k( z_1, z_2) g^n=1 in ℂ^2 for integers n≥ 2 , where h( z_1, z_2) and k( z_1, z_2) are non-zero meromorphic functions in ℂ^2 , and show that f and g can reduce to a constant or rational function under the conditions that (kg^n)_z_1≢0 , ℒ( (hf)_z_2) ⊆ℒ( (kg^n)_z_1/(kg^n-1)) and ℒ(f)⊆ℒ( (kg^n)_z_1/(kg^n-1)) ignoring multiplicities or counting multiplicities.

Abstract:Let A(n) be a $k\times s$ matrix and $m(n)$ be a $k$ dimensional vector, where all entries of A(n) and $m(n)$ are integer-valued polynomials in $n$. Suppose that $$t(m(n)|A(n))=#\{x\in\mathbb{Z}_{+}^{s}\mid A(n)x=m(n)\}$$ is finite for each $n\in \mathbb{N}$, where $Z_+$ is the set of nonnegative integers. This paper conjectures that $t(m(n)|A(n))$ is an integer-valued quasi-polynomial in $n$ for $n$ sufficiently large and verifies the conjecture in several cases.

Abstract:Through determining all the solutions of x(4) + y(4) = i(sigma)omega(0)(mu)z(2) (where sigma = 0, 1, mu = 0, 1 and omega(0) = 1 + i) in Z[i] and of x(4) + y(4) = (-1)(sigma) omega(1)(mu)z(2) (where sigma = 0, 1, mu = 0, 1 and omega(1) = root-2) and x(4) - x(2)y(2) + y(4) = (-1)(sigma) z(2) (sigma = 0, 1) in Z[root-2], we have proved that i) G(2n) (Q(i)) is a subgroup of K-2 (Q(i)) iff n less than or equal to 2, ii) is a subgroup of K-2(Q(root-2)) iff n less than or equal to 2, iii) If n greater than or equal to 2, then G(2n3m) (Q(root-2)) is a subgroup of K-2(Q(root-2)) iff n = 2 and m = 0, which partially confirms a conjecture on K-2 posed by Browkin in [1].

Abstract:In this paper, we deal with two classes of Diophantine equations, $x^2+y^2+z^2+k_1yz+k_2zx+k_3xy=(3+k_1+k_2+k_3)xyz$ and $x^2+y^4+z^4+ky^2z^2+2xz^2+2xy^2=(7+k)xy^2z^2$, where $k_1,k_2,k_3,k$ are nonnegative integers. The former is known as the Markov Diophantine equation if $k_1=k_2=k_3=0$, and the latter is a Diophantine equation recently studied by Lampe if $k=0$. We give algorithms to enumerate all positive integer solutions to these equations, and discuss the structures of the generalized cluster algebras behind them.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the Diophantine problem given by the equation $F_n = F_l^k (F_l^m - 1)$, where $n, l, m \geq 1$ and $k \geq 3$. Here, $\{ F_t \}_{t=0}^{\infty} $ denotes the Fibonacci numbers, defined by the recurrence relation $F_0 = 0$, $F_1 = 1$, and $F_t = F_{t-1} + F_{t-2}$ for $t \geq 2$. By applying Matveev's theorem, which provides lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms of algebraic numbers, along with a modified Baker-Davenport reduction method and a divisibility property of Fibonacci numbers, we show that $(n, l, k, m) = (6, 3, 3, 1)$ is the only positive integer quadruple that satisfies this equation.
