Abstract:A novel multifunctional core shell nanosphere, with mixed Eu3+/Tb3+ complexes (acetylsalicylic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline as the first and second ligands, respectively) anchored onto the surface of silica matrices (SiO2) as a core and mesoporous silica as a shell, was prepared by a combined sol gel method and covalent bond grafting technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N-2 adsorption-desorption, photoluminescence (PL) spectra and PL excitation spectra were used to fully characterize the sample, respectively. The as-prepared nanocomposite has a uniformly luminescent silica core of about 113 nm in diameter, which is further encapsulated within a thin mesoporous shell of about 10 nm in thickness. It is found that the nanomaterial possesses specific surface area of 131 m(2)/g and pore volume as large as 0.38 cm(3)/g. Additionally, excellent Eu3+ centered emission was achieved for all samples accompanied by faint characteristic emission of Tb3+. The luminescence intensity of Eu3+ is strongly dependent on the molar ratio of Eu3+/Tb3+ and reaches the maximum when the molar ratio is 2:1, suggesting introduction of Tb3+ strongly enhances the luminescence intensity of Eu3+. The emission mechanism was also discussed along with the energy transfer process between organic ligands and rare earth ions as well as Tb3+ and Eu3+.
