Abstract:A new kind of luminescent organic-inorganic hybrid material (denoted Hybrid I) consisting of europium 1,10-phenanthroline complexes covalently attached to a silica-based network was prepared by a sol-gel process. 1,10-Phenanthroline grafted to 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate was used as one of the precursors for the preparation of an organic-inorganic hybrid materials. For comparison purposes, the hybrid material (denoted Hybrid II) in which phenanthroline was not grafted onto the silica backbone of the frameworks was also prepared. Elemental analysis; NMR, FT-IR, UV/vis absorption, and luminescence spectroscopies, and luminescence decay analysis were used to characterize the obtained hybrid materials. It is shown that the homogeneity of Hybrid I is superior to that of Hybrid II, and a higher concentration europium can be incorporated into Hybrid I than Hybrid II. Excitation at the ligand absorption wavelength (283 nm) resulted in the strong emission of the Eu3+ D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 0-4) transition lines as a result of the efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the EU3+ in Hybrid I. The number of water molecules coordinated to the europium ion was estimated, and the structure of the as-synthesized Hybrid I was predicted on the basis of the experimental results.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped sol-gel-derived materials are an attractive type of luminescent materials that can be processed at ambient temperatures. However, the solubility of the lanthanide complexes in the matrix is a problem and it is difficult to obtain a uniform distribution of the complexes. Fortunately, these problems can be solved by covalently linking the lanthanide complex to the sol-gel-derived matrix. In this study, luminescent Eu3+ and Tb3+ bipyridine complexes were immobilized on sol-gel-derived silica. FT-IR, DTA-TG and luminescence spectra, as well as luminescence decay analysis, were used to characterize the obtained hybrid materials. The organic groups from the bipyridine-Si moiety were mostly destroyed between 220 and 600 degreesC. The luminescence properties of lanthanide bipyridine complexes anchored to the backbone of the silica network and the corresponding pure complexes were comparatively investigated, which indicates that the lanthanide bipyridine complex was formed during the hydrolysis and co-condensation of TEOS and modified bipyridine. Excitation at the ligand absorption wavelength (336 nm for the hybrid materials and 350 nm for the pure complexes) resulted in strong emission of the lanthanide ions: Eu3+ D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) and Tb3+ D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) emission lines due to efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the lanthanide ions.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel luminescent organic–inorganic hybrid material containing covalently bonded ternary europium complex in mesoporous silica MCM-41 has been successfully prepared by co-condensation of tetrethoxysilane (TEOS) and the modified ligand 2-phenyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phen-3-(triethoxysilyl)propylcarbamate (PIP-Si) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant as template. PIP-Si containing 1,10-phenanthroline covalently grafted to 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate is used not only as a precursor but also as the second ligand for Eu(TTA)3·2H2O (TTA: 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetate) complex to prepare a novel functionalized mesoporous material. The resulted mesoporous composite materials, which demonstrate strong characteristic emission lines of Eu3+5D0-7FJ (J=0, 1, 2, 3, 4), were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), small-angle X-ray diffraction, excited-state decay analysis. Emission intensity of the Eu(III) complex covalently linked to MCM-41 (Eu-MCM-41) increases with the increasing irradiation time, demonstrating better photostability compared with both pure Eu(III) complex and physically incorporated sample.

Abstract:A series of novel organic-inorganic hybrid materials with a Eu(III) complex [(C(2)H(5))(4)N][Eu(DBM)(3)(DBM-OH)] (DBM=dibenzoylmethanate, DBM-OH=p-hydroxydibenzoylmethanate) covalently bonded into vinyl-modified silica networks have been successfully assembled through a sol-gel process. DBM-OH was grafted to the coupling agent 3-(triethoxysilyl)propylisocyanate (TESPIC), and the as-obtained molecular precursor DBM-Si was used as a bridge molecule both coordinate to Eu(3+) and forming an inorganic Si-O network with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) after cohydrolysis and co-condensation processes. The luminescence properties of VTES/TEOS composite hybrid materials were systematically studied in comparison to those of TEOS-derived hybrid material and pure [(C(2)H(5))(4)N][Eu(DBM)(4)], respectively. The results indicate that the luminescent quantum efficiencies of VTES/TEOS composite hybrid materials are greatly improved. And it is interesting to find that the luminescent intensity of VTES/TEOS composite hybrid material is enhanced by optimizing the molar ratio of VTES to TEOS (VTES:TEOS=4:6) by 3.3 and 2.4 times compared with TEOS-derived hybrid material and pure [(C(2)H(5))(4)N][Eu(DBM)(4)], respectively. In addition, the thermal stability of the emission was also improved considerably. The results presented in this paper indicate that the use of vinyl-modified silicates as a matrix opens the door to improving the photoluminescence properties of Eu(III) complexes.

Abstract:Novel hybrid thin films covalently doped with Eu3+ (Tb3+) have been prepared via direct routes involving co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and phen-Si in the presence of Eu3+ (Tb3+) by spin-casting and their luminescence properties have been investigated in detail. Lanthanide ions can be sensitized by anchored phenanthroline in hybrid thin films. Excitation at the ligand absorption wavelength (272 nm) resulted in the strong emission of the lanthanide ions i.e. Eu3+ 5D0–7FJ (J=0, 1, 2, 3, 4) emission lines and Tb3+ 5D4–7FJ (J=6, 5, 4, 3) due to the energy transfer from the ligands to the lanthanide ions.

Abstract:Microporous silica gel has been prepared by the sol-gel method utilizing the hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). The gel has been doped with the luminescent ternary europium complex Eu(TTA) 3 ·phen: where HTTA = 1-(2-thenoyl)-3,3,3-trifluoracetone and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline. By contrast to the weak f-f electron absorption bands of Eu 3+ , the complex organic ligand exhibits intense near ultraviolet absorption. Energy transfer from the ligand to Eu 3+ enables the production of efficient, sharp visible luminescence from this material. Utilizing the polymerization of methyl methacrylate or ethyl methacrylate, the inorganic/polymer hybrid materials containing Eu(TTA) 3 ·phen have also been obtained. SEM micrographs show uniformly dispersed particles in the nanometre range. The characteristic luminescence spectral features of europium ions are present in the emission spectra of the hybrid material doped with Eu(TTA) 3 ·phen.

Abstract:New monomer N-(4-carboxyphenyl)-NL-(propyltriethoxysilyl)urea (1) which acts as both a ligand for Th3+ ion and a sol-gel precursor has been synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, and MS. Hybrid luminescent thin films consisting of organoterbium covalently bonded to a silica-based network have been obtained in situ via a sol-gel approach. Strong line emission of Tb3+ ion was observed from the hybrid luminescent films under UV excitation.

Abstract:Due to the wide potential application in the fields of sensing, lighting materials, and optical⁻electrical multifunctional devices, rare earth complex hybrid materials have been studied extensively over the past decades. A poly(ionic liquid)/mesoporous-based hybrid system which has been functionalized by the covalently linked europium complexes was reported here. Through surface modification with a coupling agent bearing an vinyl group, MCM-41 was chosen as the carrier matrix for poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) and europium compounds, and based on that, novel luminescent hybrid materials were prepared by confining the ionic liquid and europium complexes into the inorganic Si⁻O frameworks. The resulting organic/inorganic materials are chemically bonded hybrids which show good photoluminescent properties such as broad excitation spectra, line-like emission spectra, and long luminescence lifetimes. The PILs/MCM-41/Eu3+ hybrid reported here is a rare earth multifunctional material which is believed to have potential applications in the field of optical⁻electrical materials.

Abstract:Hybrid materials, containing in-situ synthesized lanthanide complexes with intense green light, have been prepared via sol–gel process. The luminescence properties and the decay times of as-synthesized samples were investigated. The excitation spectrum of the samples indicates the formation of complexes between terbium (III) and P-Sulfosalicylic acid. The hybrid materials that contain in-situ synthesized terbium complexes exhibit the characteristic emission bands of the rare earth ions. In addition, the effect of concentration of terbium on the luminescence properties as well as the thermal stability were also studied.

Abstract:Luminescent hybrid thin films consisting of terbium complex covalently bonded to a silica-based network have been obtained in situ via a sol–gel approach. A new monomer, N-(4-benzoic acid-yl), N′-(propyltriethoxysilyl)urea (PABI), has been synthesized by grafting isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (ICPTES) to p-aminobenzoic acid and characterized by 1H NMR, IR and MS. The monomer acts as a ligand for Tb3+ ion and as a sol–gel precursor. Band emission from Tb3+ ion due to an efficient ligand-to-metal energy transfer was observed by UV excitation. The decay curves of Tb3+ in the hybrid films were measured. The energy difference between the triplet state energy of PABI and the 5D4 level of Tb3+ ion falls in the exciting range to sensitize Tb3+ ion fluorescence.

Abstract:A hierarchically ordered 4,4′-biphenylene-bridged mesoporous organosilica framework (Bp-PMO) has been synthesized with the aim of using it as a new hybrid host for LnIII ions. A series of novel organic–inorganic luminescent hybrid materials have been obtained by covalently linking LnIII complexes (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Er, and Yb) to Bp-PMO functionalized with 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA). The visible and NIR photoluminescence studies of the hybrid materials show that Bp-PMO acts both as an inorganic host and an organic co-sensitizer for LnIII ions. The intrinsic quantum yield and lifetime data obtained for the hybrid material containing EuIII (54.5% and 615 μs) are among the highest values reported for hybrid materials containing EuIIItetrakis(β-diketonate) complexes. The combination of Bp-PMO and HTTA also provides sizable sensitization for TbIII, ErIII and YbIII ions. The overall quantum yields and lifetime measurements for mixed metallic hybrid materials show that Ln → Ln′ energy transfer occurs in the mixed lanthanide systems. In addition, controlling the Ln/Ln′ ratio allows one to tune the emission colour.

Abstract:Ternary europium complex-doped, inorganic/organic hybrid monoliths were prepared from TEOS (Si (OC2H5)(4)), GPTM (3-glycidyloxyproxyl-trimethoxysilane) and Eu(TTA)(3)phen complex and the luminescence properties of the hybrid materials were also investigated. The gels exhibit the characteristic emission bands of europium ions and the characteristic excitation bands of lanthanide complexes. In addition, EU3+ presents a longer fluorescence lifetime with higher colorimetric purity in gel than in the corresponding pure complex.
Sol-gel preparation and luminescence of silica gel/polymer hybrid material incorporated with europium complex

Abstract:Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and ethyl methacrylate (EMA) doped with luminescent ternary europium complex (Eu(TTA)(3).-phen) with 1-(2-thenoyl)-3,3,3-trifluoraceton (HTTA) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) is incorporated into the microporous silica gel. With the polymerization of MMA (and EMA), the hybrid material containing Eu(TTA)(3).phen has been obtained. The material exhibits good toughness and transparency. The TG-DTA curves have been determined, indicating that the hybrid matrix exhibits more thermal stability than that of the pure complex and pure polymer matrix. The luminescence spectra of all hybrid material doped with Eu(TTA)(3).phen show the characteristic excitation and emission of europium ions and there exists some slight shift of maximum wavelength (about 380 nm), which implies the same energy transfer mechanism as the pure complex and the hybrid matrix is a suitable substrate for the luminescence of europium ions. In the range of doping concentration of Eu(TTA)(3).phen (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2. 0 and 5.0wt%), emission intensities increases with the increasing of corresponding doping concentration and concentration quenching effect has not taken place. The emission spectra of europium complex has been intensified by incorporating it into the hybrid matrix and the specific emission intensities per complex formula unit is increased compared with that of original complex.

Abstract:Binary and ternary complexes of europium and terbium with conjugated carboxylic acid (nicotinic acid and 3,4-furandicarboxylic acid) and 1.10-phenanthroline were introduced into silica gel by the sol-gel method. The luminescence behavior of the complexes in silica gels was studied compared with the corresponding solid state complexes by means of emission, excitation spectra and lifetimes. The result indicated that the rare earth ions (Eu3+ and Tb3+) showed fewer emission lines and slightly lower emission intensities in the silica gel than those in pure rare earth complexes. The lifetimes of rare earth ions (Eu3+ and Tb3−) in silica gel doped with rare earth complexes became longer than those in pure rare earth complexes.

Abstract:Transparent organic–inorganic hybrid monoliths containing rare-earth complexes (Eu(TTA)3Phen, Tb(Sal)3) were prepared via the sol–gel technique. It could be observed by transmission electron microscopy that the fluorescent particles are distributed in the matrix at the microscopic level. The matrix is composed of organic–inorganic semi-interpenetrating networks, i.e., PHEMA–SiO2 system. The fluorescence emission spectra of samples are similar to those from corresponding powdered Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes, and the half-widths of the strongest bands are less than 10 nm, which indicates that the monolith exhibits high fluorescence intensity and color purity. Furthermore, the fluorescence spectra exhibit no obvious change with decreasing nanoparticle size of the rare-earth complex. The fluorescence lifetimes of samples are longer than pure Eu(III), Tb(III) complexes, respectively. Samples irradiated with an UV lamp (365 nm) are still transparent but become bright red and green in color due to fluorescence of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes.

Abstract:Luminescent ternary organic-inorganic-polymeric mesoporous hybrid material Eu-(PA-SBA-15)-PMAA was prepared in situ through hydrothermal and solvothermal method based on hydrolysis and co-polycondensation. The organic ligand PA (O-phthalic anhydride) was modified by silane coupling reagent APS ((3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane) to generate the precursor PA-Si which was used to form the ordered inorganic Si-O networks through direct co-hydrolysis and co-polycondensation process with SBA-15 in the presence of Pluronic P123 surfactant as a template. TEOS (tetraethoxysilane) was used to promote the hydrolysis and condensation process. Eu3+ complex Eu(PA-Si)(3) was covalently linked to the ordered mesoporous SBA-15 and organic polymer PMMA which was synthesized by addition polymerization reaction of the monomer MMA (methyl methacrylate) in the presence of the initiator BPO (benzoyl peroxide). Moreover, the binary organic-inorganic mesoporous hybrid material Eu (PA-SBA-15)(3) without polymer was also synthesized simultaneously for comparison. The luminescence properties of the hybrids were characterized in detail. The results show the ternary hybrid exhibits stronger emission intensity, longer lifetime and higher quantum efficiency than binary one which proves that the introduction of the organic polymer PMMA brings improvement to the hybrid system.

Abstract:A new ligand, N,N'-Bis(6-methyl-2-pyridine-N-oxide)-1,3-propane (L), and some binary lanthanide complexes (Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+) were synthesized and characterized in detail. The composition of the binary complexes was determined as LnL(NO3)(3). They are 1: 1 electrolytes in DMF. The complexes have strong characteristic line fluorescence emission spectra, and it is also found that TbL(NO3)(3) complex has stronger luminescence intensity than EuL(NO3)(3) in solid state and in methanol.

Abstract:A novel sol–gel derived hybrid material (classed as Eu-DBM-Si) covalently grafted with Eu(DBM-OH)3·2H2O (where DBM-OH=o-hydroxydibenzoylmethane) was prepared through the primary β-diketone ligand DBM-OH. All the synthesized ligands were characterized by 1H NMR, elemental analyses and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). The resultant Eu-DBM-Si material exhibited good transparent and homogenous property. Compared to the Eu-DBM hybrid prepared by physically doped silicon dioxide with Eu(DBM-OH)3·2H2O, the Eu-DBM-Si hybrid presented more efficient ligand-to-Eu3+ energy transfer and a significant improvement in the measured emission quantum yield. Furthermore, the photophysical properties of these hybrid materials, such as the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, PL intensities, symmetry properties, lifetime decays, and Judd-Ofelt parameters were also investigated in detail.
