Abstract:An all-solid photonic bandgap fiber with the first bandgap from 450 to 900 nm was designed for visible supercontinuum generation. Abstract:Silica nanowires provide strong mode confinement in a cylindrical silica-core/air-cladding geometry and serve a model system for studying nonlinear propagation of short optical pulses inside fibers. We report on the fiber diameter dependence of the supercontinuum generated by femtosecond laser pulses in silica fiber tapers with average diameters in the range of 200 nm to 1200 nm. We observe a strong diameter-dependence of the spectral broadening, which can be attributed to the fiber's diameter-dependent dispersion and nonlinearity. The short interaction length (less than 20 mm) and the low energy threshold for supercontinuum generation (about 1 nJ) make tapered fibers with diameters between 400 nm and 800 nm an ideal source of coherent white-light source in nanophotonics.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation (SCG) using a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser as a pump source and a nanofiber as a nonlinear element is investigated by numerical modeling. Many parameters are taken into account involving input pulse duration, peak power and diameter of the nanofiber. The results show that the narrower the input pulse is, the easier the SCG could be observed. The relation between the spectrum broadening and the diameter of nanofiber is not a direct proportion. According to our simulation, the dimension of the nanofiber plays an important role in effecting the dispersion and then the generation of supercontinuum.

Abstract:The generation of a two-octave supercontinuum from the visible to mid-infrared (700 - 2800 nm) in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber is reported. The fiber design is based on a nanostructured core comprised of two types of drawn lead-bismuth-gallate glass rods with different refractive indices. This structure yields an effective parabolic index profile, an extended transmission window, and ten times increased nonlinearity when compared to silica fibers. Using femtosecond pulse pumping at wavelengths in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, a detailed study is carried out into the supercontinuum generating mechanisms and instabilities seeded by periodic self imaging. Significantly, suitable injection conditions in the high power regime are found to result in the output beam profile showing clear signatures of beam self-cleaning from nonlinear mode mixing. Experimental observations are interpreted using spatio-temporal 3+1D numerical simulations of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and simulated spectra are in excellent agreement with experiment over the full two-octave spectral bandwidth. These results demonstrate a new pathway towards the generation of bright, ultrabroadband light sources in the mid-infrared.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation has received extensive attention because of the innovation of high nonlinear fiber, which makes the supercontinuum system more simple, compact, and efficient. Nonlinear effects are enhanced greatly during the strong interaction between the light and matter in high nonlinear fiber, and the spectrum will be broadened effectively. In this paper, we demonstrate the supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber and a conventional tapered single-mode fiber pumped by the mode-locked Yb fiber laser. Through the experimental comparison of the supercontinuum spectrum between two kinds of the high nonlinear fibers, the spectral flatness, Raman perturbation, and dispersion wave radiation are discussed for studying the characteristics of supercontinuum generation. Finally, the octave supercontinuum-based both kinds of high nonlinear fibers could be achieved. In particular, the employment of tapered single-mode fiber is proven to be an appropriate candidate for supercontinuum generation and further application.

Abstract:Formating mechanism of supercontinuum generation in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber is studied. Using nonlinear polarization rotation technique, a stable femtosecond optical pulse with the central wavelength of 1556.0 nm as pumping source is obtained, and by delivering this pulse into a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, a supercontinuum with the 20 dB bandwith about the 140 nm has been obtained in experiment; Supercontinuum generation in different pump power was experimentally and numerically investigated. It is shown that supercontinuum has the different formatting mechanism with different pump power, and under various nonlinear effects, the more higher of the pump power; the more wide of the supercontinuum. It is found that qualitative agreement between the experiments and the simulations, the simulations shows that it exists an optimal fiber length for generation of the flat, broad supercontinuum. The SC band bandwidth will became smoother and broader by the frequency chirp.

Abstract:We demonstrated that ultrabroadband noise-like pulses (NLPs) spanning from below 1600 nm to beyond 2300 nm can be generated in Tm-doped fiber lasers enabled by an optical microfiber. Meanwhile, pronounced red light around 660 nm was also observed, which was attributed to the intracavity third harmonic generation (THG) of ultrashort pulses by harnessing the intermodal phase matching in the optical microfiber. As far as we know, it is the first time to simultaneously observe the ultrabroadband NLPs and the intracavity THG in ultrafast fiber lasers, and it is anticipated that these ultrabroadband NLPs can be adopted as a compact broadband source for optical spectroscopy around 2 µm and a wonderful potential seed for supercontinuum generation in the mid-infrared. Moreover, the THG of the intracavity high peak power NLPs in ultrafast fiber lasers provides a new kind of fiber-format visible light source.

Abstract:Silica-based photonic crystal fibre has proven highly successful for supercontinuum generation, with smooth and flat spectral power densities. However, fused silica glass suffers from strong material absorption in the mid-infrared (>2,500 nm), as well as ultraviolet-related optical damage (solarization), which limits performance and lifetime in the ultraviolet (<380 nm). Supercontinuum generation in silica photonic crystal fibre is therefore only possible between these limits. A number of alternative glasses have been used to extend the mid-infrared performance, including chalcogenides, fluorides and heavy-metal oxides, but none has extended the ultraviolet performance. Here, we describe the successful fabrication (using the stack-and-draw technique) of a ZBLAN photonic crystal fibre with a high air-filling fraction, a small solid core, nanoscale features and near-perfect structure. We also report its use in the generation of ultrabroadband, long-term stable, supercontinua spanning more than three octaves in the spectral range 200–2,500 nm.

Abstract:We demonstrated an over 30 W all-fiber supercontinuum source based on a four-mode graded-index multimode fiber (GIMF) pumped by around 5 picoseconds laser pulse. Following the evolution of the supercontinuum, it is reasonable to conclude that the discrete spectral peaks in the range 350–700 nm were generated owing to the geometric parametric instability effect and quasi-phase matched harmonic generation, whereas the radiation of dispersive waves, stimulated Raman scattering, and relative effects of optical soliton caused spectral broadening ranging from 700 nm to 1750 nm (and even to 2400 nm). Furthermore, the properties of the supercontinua generated in the four-mode GIMF and the 50/125 standard GIMF were experimentally compared. This comparison implied that the wavelengths radiated by the geometric parametric instability differed owing to different dispersion values. And the supercontinuum generated by the four-mode GIMF had a flatter spectral profile and a wider wavelength range.

Abstract:To achave a broader supercontinuum in the mid-infrared band, a chalcogenide double-clad step-index fiber is proposed. Comprising As2Se3, AsSe2, and As2S5 glass, this fiber effectively confines light within the core, minimizing fiber dispersion fluctuations. By iteratively adjusting the dispersion curve of the fiber, enhancement of the supercontinuum spectrum generation is possible. Spectral broadening primarily results from four-wave mixing and self-phase modulation. Raman scattering within the pulse generates unstable higher-order solitons, which, upon breakup, contribute to spectrum broadening. This study explores the effects of pulse laser parameters and fiber length on supercontinuum generation, obtains regular cognition and offers theoretical analyses of the results. Through optimization of parameters, a mid-infrared supercontinuum with an 11 μm width is achieved. These findings underscore the potential of chalcogenide double-clad step-index fiber for generating a mid-infrared supercontinuum light source. The designed fiber structure should be helpful in supercontinuum sources, bio-molecule sensing, and spectroscopy.

Abstract:Physical mechanism of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber by femtosecond laser pulse has been investigated experimentally. In this study, we used the tunable output wavelength Ti: sapphire optical parametric amplifier as the pump source and the fiber spectrometer acquired the spectrogram of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber under different power and wavelength conditions, then we normalized the spectrograms and make a comparison of them. PCF supercontinuum differences affected by physical mechanisms were analyzed. We found that when increasing the incident pump pulse power, the spectral width will be gradually widened, there are more peaks, part of the energy will transfer in to the short-wave- length region; as long as it reaches a certain intensity, width of supercontinuum finally saturated, the shape of supercontinuum was also stabilized. As the incident power was settled at 300 milliwatt and the length of PCF was settled at 105 millimeter, experimental results show that width and shape of supercontinuum are affected by the wavelength of pump pulse, in the range of 760 to 840 nm, there appears more and more peaks with the increase of incident wavelength; at anomalous dispersion the spectrogram of supercontinuum generation will be more flat and more wider as the wavelength of pump pulse closer to zero point.

Abstract:In this paper we report a two octave spanning supercontinuum generation in a bandwidth of 700-3000 nm in a single-mode photonic crystal fiber made of lead-bismuth-gallate glass. To our knowledge this is the broadest supercontinuum reported in heavy metal oxide glass based fibers. The fiber was fabricated using an in-house synthesized glass with optimized nonlinear, rheological and transmission properties in the range of 500-4800 nm. The photonic cladding consists of 8 rings of air holes. The fiber has a zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) at 1460 nm. Its dispersion is determined mainly by the first ring of holes in the cladding with a relative hole size of 0.73. Relative hole size of the remaining seven rings is 0.54, which allows single mode performance of the fiber in the infrared range and reduces attenuation of the fundamental mode. The fiber is pumped into anomalous dispersion with 150 fs pulses at 1540 nm. Observed spectrum of 700-3000 nm was generated in 2 cm of fiber with pulse energy below 4 nJ. A flatness of 5 dB was observed in 950-2500 nm range.

Abstract:Long-period fiber gratings are inscribed in all-solid photonic bandgap fibers by use of a femtosecond laser with the line-scanning method. The coupling from the fundamental core mode to LP11 core mode can be readily obtained and the resonant wavelength of the grating is found to be highly sensitive to tensile strain while being nearly insensitive or only slightly sensitive to temperature, curvature, and external refractive index. Such gratings can be effectively used in stable spectral filters and optical fiber sensors with largely reduced cross-sensitivity.

Abstract:This paper presents the design of an index guided highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber which promises to yield very large birefringence ~3.33 X 10^(-2) at 1550 nm and ~1.75 X 10^(-2) at 1064 nm as well as large effective nonlinearity ~80 W^(-1)km^(-1). Optical supercontinuum generation in the proposed fiber using a 1064 nm pump source with peak power of 1kW has been also presented. Finite difference time domain method (FDTD) has been employed to examine the optical properties such as fiber birefringence, mode field, V-parameter, walk-off and optical nonlinearity, while the Split-step Fourier method is used to solve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation felicitating the study of supercontinuum generation. Simulation results indicate that horizontal input pulse yields superior continuum in comparison to that of the vertically polarized input. However, the broadening of the continuum is about 1450 nm in case of horizontally polarized input light whereas it is approximately 2350 nm for vertically polarized.

Abstract:An all-fiber supercontinuum source based on graded-index multimode fibers is reported. The supercontinuum source is based on a homemade mode-locked oscillator and a three-stage picosecond amplifier, which obtained the supercontinuum by a graded-index multimode fiber. The laser output with a spectral range of 480-2440 nm, an average power of 25 W, and a repetition frequency of 8.27 MHz is obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest average power for generating a supercontinuum with an all-fiber structure based on the graded-index fiber. The effects of GRIN fiber length and different pump peak powers on the supercontinuum generation are also verified. The results showed that the graded-index multimode fiber can effectively obtain a supercontinuum with high power.

Abstract:177.6 W near-infrared supercontinuum generation in a nonlinear fiber amplifier is first demonstrated. An all-normal dispersion master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) configuration is adopted and an all-fiber structure is realized. The supercontinuum stretches from 1064 to 2000 nm with a 10 dB spectral width of 740 nm and 56% optical to optical conversion efficiency. The average spectral power density across the whole continuum is more than 150 mW nm−1 and the effective pulse energy is above 0.3 mJ, which paves the way for high-power supercontinuum generation at a level of hundreds of watts.

Abstract:In this paper, ultra-broad band optical signal amplification are analyzed and demonstrated by utilizing supercontinuum generation propagating over the photonic crystal fiber. The coupled nonlinear Schroodinger equation containing parametric process and stimulated Raman scattering effect was analyzed and solved to calculate the variation of signal gain with frequency. The dependence of the gain spectra on nonlinear and chromatic dispersion coefficients as well as the geometrical parameters of photonic crystal fiber are discussed. The results show that when using a pump at wavelength 1450nm and peak power 1600W, the gain spectra covers from 1300 to 1700nm with the peak gain 100dB. This amplification mechanism have potential in full-wave optical fiber communication.

Abstract:We demonstrated the realization and characterization of a solid photonic bandgap fiber (SPBF) with a compact size of about 10 mm and a high wavelength sensitivity of up to -4.034 nm/degrees C by means of fully infiltrating an ultraviolet curable polymer with a high refractive index of 1.515 into air holes of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). To the best of our knowledge, it was the first time that the SPBF with tunable bandgaps was fabricated in the conventional index-guiding PCF. Compared with conventional fluid filled PBFs, the proposed SPBF can be stable to temperature and other environmental effects and maintain a large extinction ratio of more than 30 dB within a broad wavelength. The splicing between the SPBF and single mode fibers has been solved. Moreover, it is observed that the bandwidth of bandgap (G2) gradually broadens with the increase in temperature.
