Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like transmission is observed in an electro-optic (EO) tunable periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with a central defect. When an electric field is applied, light satisfying the phase matching condition keeps its original polarization, although it experiences polarization rotation then turns back. Therefore the corresponding light always may pass though freely but with an EO tunable phase and dispersion. On the other hand, light with a neighboring wavelength is blocked. Dual-valley Transmission Spectrum Based on Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate with a Structure Defect

Abstract:We observe the symmetrical dual-valley spectrum in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with a defect in the middle employing electro-optic effect. When the external electric fields are applied, light satisfying phase-matching condition (λ 0 ) will undergo polarization rotation and then turn back. However, the polarization states of wavelength at λ 0 ±Δλ will be changed at the end of the sample due to phase mismatching. A dual-valley transmission spectrum is thus obtained. Moreover, the depth of the valley could be tailored with different electric fields on the y-surface of the sample.
Defect Mode-Induced Unidirectional Flexural Wave Transmission Using Prismatic Beams with Concentrated Gradient Masses

Abstract:We study and realize unidirectional flexural wave transmission in finite phononic crystal beams based on the boundary defect modes. First, we show that by carrying a periodic array of concentrated masses, conventional prismatic beams become phononic crystal beams having multiple transmittance peaks in odd-order bandgaps. We point out that these bandgap transmittance peaks are induced by pass-band splitting and are essentially defect modes due to the existence of the imperfect boundary in finite beam structures. Significant asymmetric flexural wave propagation can be observed in these defect modes by gradually changing each concentrated mass. Using the spectral element method (SEM), the relationship between the concentrated gradient masses and the directivity at the defect modes is discussed. To realize concentrated gradient masses, we periodically attach near-point-contact steel balls with gradient diameters on a prismatic beam. The formation of the bandgaps and unidirectional displacement transmission are experimentally validated with a high-sensitive point-wise fiber Bragg grating displacement sensing system. Asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation is further demonstrated in the time domain with a Hanning-windowed tone burst signal excited at the two ends of the phononic crystal beam. Agreements between the SEM and experimental results clearly indicate that the asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation can be achieved in prismatic beams carrying a periodic array of concentrated gradient masses.

Abstract:A periodic layered medium, with unit cells consisting of a dielectric and an electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT)-based atomic vapor, is designed for light propagation manipulation.Considering that a destructive quantum interference relevant to a two-photon resonance emerges in EIT-based atoms interacting with both control and probe fields, an EIT-based periodic layered medium exhibits a flexible frequency-sensitive optical response, where a very small variation in the probe frequency can lead to a drastic variation in reflectance and transmittance.The present EIT-based periodic layered structure can result in controllable optical processes that depend sensitively on the external control field.The tunable and sensitive optical response induced by the quantum interference of a multi-level atomic system can be applied in the fabrication of new photonic and quantum optical devices.This material will also open a good perspective for the application of such designs in several new fields, including photonic microcircuits or integrated optical circuits.

Abstract:We proposed a design of a tunable optical isolator. The electro-optic (EO) effects in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with a defect were studied. EO effects and second harmonic generation (SHG) allow three-wave coupling in this nonlinear optics process. A defect is inserted in an asymmetrical position in PPLN to break the reciprocity of the fundamental-wave transmission in two reversed propagating directions. We numerically demonstrated that the contrast of this optical isolator can be tuned from -1 to 1 by simply changing the external dc electric field. With EO effects, the position of the defect can be designed more flexibly maintaining a high contrast of the optical isolation. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3549185]

Abstract:We propose a bidirectional tunable optical diode based on a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with defect. An acoustic wave propagates together with the light beam so that a collinear photon-phonon interaction happens, which affects the nonlinear optical processes in PPLN. The fundamental wave exhibits an optical diode effect, i.e., the light only may travel toward a single direction while the opposite way is isolated. However, the acoustic wave could be used to adjust the contrast of optical isolation from -1 to 1. A direction-optional operation is thus realized. Moreover, the advantages of our tunable PPLN optical diode are also discussed.

Abstract:Defect-induced tunable permittivity of Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) in indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films via annealing at different temperatures with mixed gases (98% Ar, 2% O2) was reported. Red-shift of λENZ (Epsilon-Near-Zero wavelength) from 1422 nm to 1995 nm in wavelength was observed. The modulation of permittivity is dominated by the transformation of plasma oscillation frequency and carrier concentration depending on Drude model, which was produced by the formation of structural defects and the reduction of oxygen vacancy defects during annealing. The evolution of defects can be inferred by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Raman spectroscopy. The optical bandgaps (Eg) were investigated to explain the existence of defect states. And the formation of structure defects and the electric field enhancement were further verified by finite-difference time domain (FDTD) simulation.

Abstract:Herein, we present the investigation of visible light transparency and optical limiting characteristics of one dimensional photonic crystal with LiNbO3 defect fabricated by sputtering technique. The transmission spectroscopy measurements reveal a broad photonic band gap with a 1064 nm defect mode and high transmittance within the visible range. The optical energy limiting performance in the photonic crystal can be attributed to the strong confinement of the optical field surrounding the LiNbO3 defect layer. The low energy 1064 nm laser demonstrates a transmittance of 82.15%. Notably, the optical limiting threshold is lower at 62.03 mJ/cm2 in comparison to conventional optical limiting materials. Additionally, the optical limiter achieves a transmittance of 68.57% within the visible light band.

Abstract:Nonlinear transport enabled by symmetry breaking in quantum materials has aroused considerable interest in condensed matter physics and interdisciplinary electronics. However, the nonlinear optical response in centrosymmetric Dirac semimetals via the defect engineering has remained highly challenging. Here, we observe the helicity-dependent terahertz (THz) emission in Dirac semimetal PtTe2 thin films via circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) under normal incidence. This is activated by artificially controllable out-of-plane Te-vacancy defect gradient, which is unambiguously evidenced by the electron ptychography. The defect gradient lowers the symmetry, which not only induces the band spin splitting, but also generates the giant Berry curvature dipole (BCD) responsible for the CPGE. Such BCD-induced helicity-dependent THz emission can be manipulated by the Te-vacancy defect concentration. Furthermore, temperature evolution of the THz emission features the minimum of the THz amplitude due to the carrier compensation. Our work provides a universal strategy for symmetry breaking in centrosymmetric Dirac materials for efficient nonlinear transport and facilitates the promising device applications in integrated optoelectronics and spintronics.

Abstract:The electro-optic effect of periodically poled optical superlattice LiNbO3 (PPLN) was studied. Because of the periodic electro-optic (EO) coefficient, the reciprocal vector of the periodic structure can be used to compensate for the phase mismatch between the ordinary and extraordinary waves, which is similar to the nonlinear optical frequency conversion process. If the quasi-phase-matching condition is satisfied, polarization of a light propagated in PPLN can rotate linearly with the applied electric field, which shows that PPLN may be used as a precise spectral filter or an EO switch.

Abstract:We demonstrate in this paper the tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) made from superconducting (SC) niobium nitride (NbN) induced by intense terahertz (THz) field. The experimental results and simulation show that bright resonator is altered greatly due to strong and direct coupling to incident intense THz field, while the dark resonator has little coupling with incident THz field via a weak near-filed coupling to the bright-mode resonator. This implies that we can partially control the selective mode or part of metamaterial by introducing the incident intense THz field, which offer an effective manner to design and selectively control the metamaterial, and thus may bring tunable EIT-like metamaterial into novel applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate in this paper the tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) made from a superconducting (SC) niobium nitride (NbN) film induced by an intense terahertz (THz) field. As the variation of the incident THz field alters the intrinsic ohmic loss of the SC NbN film, the field-dependent transmittance is observed. To elaborate the role of the bright and dark modes, a hybrid coupling model is introduced to fit the experimental transmission spectra and extract the characteristic parameters of each mode. It is shown that the resonator for the bright mode is altered greatly due to strong direct coupling to the incident intense THz field, whereas the dark mode resonator has little interaction with the incident THz field via a weak near-filed coupling to the bright-mode resonator. This implies that we can partially control a mode or a part of metamaterial by introducing the intense THz field, which offers an effective manner to selectively control the electromagnetic property of the metamaterial. This work may bring many potential applications for the tunable EIT-like metamaterial.

Abstract:An approach named the defect-induced extension of photonic band gaps (PBGs) is proposed, in which a stratified periodic structure is combined with another stratified structure containing defect layers. For comparison, three structures composed of TiO2 and SiO2 alternating layers, perfect, five-defect and combined-photonic crystals (PCs), were fabricated by using an electron-beam evaporation system. The measured PBG width of combined-PCs extended to 370 nm at the normal incidence, nearly three times more than that of perfect ones, 130 nm, but a few ripples are observed within the PBG. In order to elucidate the origin of the ripples, the influence of the refractive-index contrast on the reflectance was analyzed theoretically. When the refractive-index contrast nH∕nL≥1.7, the ripples are eliminated. More importantly, an overdoubled omnidirectional PBG is realized at nH∕nL=2.56, covering the visible region completely. This approach is considered to be based on the light localization and a heterostructure resulting from introducing the impurity band and compensating for it using PCs with a strictly periodic structure, in which the thickness of every layer remains unchanged. These characteristics distinguish it from other methods proposed before, with the fabrication much easier.

Abstract:Frequency tuning of optical parametric generators in periodically poled LiNbO3 by applying a periodic electric field was demonstrated. Remarkable wavelength change was achieved. The dependence of the wavelength shift on the applied field shows a linear relationship. The tuning rates exceeding 3 nm/(kV/mm) were obtained. The phenomenon of dispersion in electro-optic tuning was predicted. Possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:Summary form only given. In recent years, more and more research attentions have been paid on periodically poled optical superlattice LiNbO/sub 3/ because of its outstanding nonlinear optical properties. The origin of the attractive characteristics is the periodic nonlinear coefficient caused by the periodic domain structure, thus the quasi-phase-matching technique can be used instead of the conventional phase matching. However, besides the nonlinear coefficient, other third-rank tensors including the electro-optic coefficient also change the sign periodically, which may result in some new properties. Such an idea is demonstrated.

Abstract:We experimentally present a tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like response in bright-bright mode resonators. In contrast to previous studies, we used NbN film and a gold film composite structure metamaterial. A significant slow-light effect could be observed at the transmission window, and the maximum group index could reach 100. As a variation in temperature alters the intrinsic ohmic loss of superconducting NbN film, a temperature-dependent transmittance and slow-light effect were observed. To better illustrate the physical mechanism of the two modes, a hybrid coupling model was introduced to fit the experimental transmission spectra and extract the characteristic parameters of sub-resonators. We found excellent agreement with experimental results. Our results provide deeper insight into the metamaterial analogs of an EIT-like response and offer an alternative approach for engineering slow-light devices, bandpass filters, and switches/modulators at terahertz frequencies.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we experimentally demonstrate magnetically coupled electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogy effect inside dielectric metamaterial. In contrast to previous studies employed different metallic topological microstructures to introduce dissipation loss change, barium strontium titanate, and calcium titanate (CaTiO3) are chosen as the bright and dark EIT resonators, respectively, due to their different intrinsic dielectric loss. Under incident magnetic field excitation, dielectric metamaterial exhibits an EIT-type transparency window around 8.9 GHz, which is accompanied by abrupt change of transmission phase. Numerical calculations show good agreement with experiment spectra and reveal remarkably increased group index, indicating potential application in slow light.

Abstract:Coupled slow waves, slow acoustic waves, and electromagnetic waves are simultaneously achieved based on a piezoelectric material, in which a line defect is created within a honeycomb lattice array of cylindrical holes etched in a LiNbO3 slab. Finite element simulations in frequency domain and time domain demonstrate that a highly localized slow mode is obtained in the defect. Owing to the piezoelectricity of LiNbO3, acoustic and electromagnetic waves are coupled with each other and transmit along the line defect. Therefore, in addition to a slow acoustic wave, an electromagnetic wave with a group velocity even lower than conventional acoustic waves is achieved.

Abstract:The coupling between dual-band or multi-band quasi-bound states in the continuum (q-BICs) is of great interest for their rich physics and promising applications. Here, we report tunable collective electromagnetic induced transparency-like (EIT-like) phenomenon due to coupling between dual-band collective electric dipolar and magnetic quadrupolar q-BICs, which are supported by an all-dielectric metasurface composed of periodic tilted silicon quadrumers. We show that this collective EIT-like phenomenon with strong slow light effect can be realized by varying the nanodisk diameter or the tilt angle, and that the transparency window wavelength, the quality factor, and the group index can all be tuned by changing the nanodisk size. We further find that as the nanodisk size decreases, the slow light effect becomes stronger, and higher sensitivity can be obtained for the refractive index sensing. Interestingly, the sensitivity first increases exponentially and then reaches a plateau as the nanodisk size decreases, or equivalently as the group index increases. We therefore expect this work will advance the understanding of the collective EIT-like effect due to coupling between q-BICs, and the findings will have potential applications in slow-light enhanced biochemical sensing.
