Abstract:Lithium oxygen batteries (LOBs) have attracted increasing interest because of their superior theoretical specific energy. However, the stability of lithium metal anode is one of the obstacles limiting their practical applications. Here, we introduce an artificial Li3PO4 solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film to protect the lithium anode in LOB with LiI/LiNO3/DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) electrolyte. The Li3PO4-protected Li anode exhibits excellent electrochemical stability during the Li stripping/plating process and leads to a relatively uniform and featureless surface in LOB after cycling. Our research demonstrates that superior electrochemical performance can be achieved in the Li O-2 battery with the synergistic combination of the DMSO-based electrolyte, the LiI redox mediator, and the Li(3)PO(4)protected Li anode. The LOB with a Li3PO4-protected Li anode exhibits a prolonged cycling life span of 152 cycles with a fixed capacity of 1000 mA h at 2 A The results in this work provide knowledge for the development of a robust strategy for protecting the Li anode in the applications of Li-O-2 batteries.
Improving Rate Capability and Reducing Over-Potential of Lithium-Oxygen Batteries Through Optimization of Dimethylsulfoxide-N/N-dimethylacetamide Mixed Electrolyte

Abstract:Although dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solvent has been widely researched in rechargeable lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries, high polarization voltage and low rate capability limited its application. In this work, we reported a DMSO-based electrolyte system by adding N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) to adjust its physical and electrochemical properties. The ionic conductivity, viscosity, oxygen solubility and diffusion coefficient of the mixed electrolytes as well as their electrochemical performance in Li-O2 batteries are researched. The electrochemical tests show that the optimized DMSO/DMA volume ratio is 30 to 70 based on the rate performance and polarization voltage of the cell. Compared with that of the pure DMSO-based electrolyte, the cell with the mixed electrolyte shows improved rate capability and reduced charge-discharge over-potential. When increasing current density from 0.2 to 0.5mAcm−2, the capability retention improves from 32% to 59%. Meanwhile, the charge-discharge voltage gap drops from 1.4V to 0.9V at a current density of 0.2mAcm−2. The improved electrochemical performance could be attributed to low viscosity, high oxygen solubility and diffusion coefficient as well as the low charge-transfer resistance with the mixed electrolyte.
Dimethyl Sulfide Electrolyte Additive Enabled High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:The unstable interfacial chemistry between the electrode and carbonate electrolyte greatly hinders the development of high-voltage lithium-ion batteries with a Ni-rich cathode. Herein, dimethyl sulfide (DMS), the simplest thioether, is successfully used as a new type of safe and low-cost electrolyte additive in a conventional carbonate electrolyte for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries. The electron-donating groups in DMS are capable of deactivating the reactive superoxide radical released from the cathode at high voltages and inducing robust S-rich cathode electrolyte interphase, which inhibits continuous side reactions, transition metal dissolutions, and cathode lattice oxygen consumption. As a result, the Li||NCM811 cell delivers a superior capacity retention of 85% at a voltage of 4.6 V over 300 cycles. Prolonged stable cycling for 1000 cycles (75% capacity retention) in a 4.4 V-level NCM811||Graphite full cell is enabled by DMS. The sulfide-based additive reported here provides a very promising and practical pathway to achieving a durable high-voltage lithium battery with a Ni-rich cathode.
1,3-Dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone: an ideal electrolyte solvent for high-performance Li–O2 battery with pretreated Li anode

Abstract:Electrolytes are widely considered as a key component in Li–O2 batteries (LOBs) because they greatly affects the discharge-charge reaction kinetics and reversibility. Herein, we report that 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone (DMI) is an excellent electrolyte solvent for LOBs. Comparing with conventional ether and sulfone based electrolytes, it has higher Li2O2 and Li2CO3 solubility, which on the one hand depresses cathode passivation during discharge, and on the other hand promotes the liquid-phase redox shuttling during charge, and consequently lowers the overpotential and improves the cyclability of the battery. However, despite the many advantages at the cathode side, DMI is not stable with bare Li anode. Thus, we have developed a pretreatment method to grow a protective artificial solid-state electrolyte interface (SEI) to prevent the unfavorable side-reactions on Li. The SEI film was formed via the reaction between fluorine-rich organic reagents and Li metal. It is composed of highly Li+-conducting LixBOy, LiF, LixNOy, Li3N particles and some organic compounds, in which LixBOy serves as a binder to enhance its mechanical strength. With the protective SEI, the coulombic efficiency of Li plating/stripping in DMI electrolyte increased from 20% to 98.5% and the fixed capacity cycle life of the assembled LOB was elongated to 205 rounds, which was almost fivefold of the cycle life in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or tetraglyme (TEGDME) based electrolytes. Our work demonstrates that molecular polarity and ionic solvation structure are the primary issues to be considered when designing high performance Li–O2 battery electrolytes, and cross-linked artificial SEI is effective in improving the anodic stability.

Abstract:The lithium–oxygen battery has received significant attention due to its potential for promoting clean energy, thanks to its ultrahigh theoretical energy density. One of the critical remaining obstacles is seeking an electrolyte that has ample physicochemical and electrochemical tolerance in a semi-open cell operating environment. This paper provides a detailed discussion from the perspective of electrolyte selection, explaining how binary solvents affect product morphology and even cycle behavior. As proved by experiments, the cost-effective G3/DMSO-based electrolyte possesses good chemical stability with a lithium metal anode and offers a more satisfying cell performance than the discussed control groups whether catalysts are used or not. The experimental results strongly indicate that the homogeneous binary solvent electrolyte has the ability to preferentially control the adsorption–desorption equilibrium of the intermediate at the cathode/electrolyte interface, thereby improving the specific capacity and cycle life of the battery. It is worth noting that the overpotential during the charging process was also significantly affected by the solvent used, particularly in the early stages of the cycling test. As such, this work shows that the G3 is a promising but easily overlooked electrolyte additive solvent for high-performance DMSO based lithium–oxygen batteries.

Abstract:The achievement of practical Li–O2 batteries is impeded by their low discharge capacity, large charge overpotential, and short lifespan. In general, the use of electrolyte with a high-donor-number solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is able to drive the solution-mediated pathway, alleviating the premature passivation of cathode from the surface-mediated Li2O2 film growth, gaining large Li2O2 toroidal particles, and extending the discharge lifetime. However, direct electrochemical decomposition of Li2O2 toroidal products typically occurs at a high charge potential owing to the poor solid-solid contact between cathode catalysts and Li2O2 toroids. Besides, DMSO-based electrolytes are unstable to Li anode, leading to undesired parasitic reactions. To overcome above issues, herein, a double-phase electrolyte composed of 10-methylphenothiazine (MPT)-dissolved DMSO-based catholyte and octyltrimethoxysilane (TOOS)-based anolyte is designed taking advantages of the immiscibility of DMSO and TOOS solvents and the insolubility of MPT in TOOS. Benefiting from the rapid liquid-solid reaction between MPT+ and Li2O2 products, the blocked MPT shuttling in TOOS, and the good compatibility of TOOS-based electrolyte to Li anode, the assembled Li–O2 battery delivers a reduced charge overpotential and a robust cyclability over 250 cycles. This study provides a promising strategy for electrolyte design towards next-generation high-performance Li–O2 batteries.
Lithium Dendrite Suppression and Cycling Efficiency of Lithium Anode

Abstract:We propose a novel binary electrolyte of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide/1,3-dioxolane, that exhibits excellent performance for the suppression of lithium-dendrite growth and stability against lithium metal. With 2.5M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide in 1,3-dioxolane, long short-circuit onset-times of 72.3 and >190h are observed in Li/Li cells polarized at galvanostatic current densities of 1.0 and 0.5mAcm−2, respectively. The coulombic efficiencies for the repeated Li plating/stripping in the 2.5M electrolyte at 1.0 and 0.5mAcm−2 are as high as 99.0% and 99.5%, respectively. The electrolyte structure is changed with an increase in the concentration speculated from Raman spectra, which enables the reactivity toward lithium metal to be lowered.
Direct Evidence of Reversible Changes in Electrolyte and its Interplay with LiO2 Intermediate in Li‐O2 Batteries

Abstract:Experiments and calculations allowed a detailed explanation of the discharge/charge mechanisms of a Li‐O2 cell using a carbon electrode and high‐DN solvent. It revealed a dynamic reversible change in the DMSO molecule resulting from interaction of LiO2–(solvent)n, thereby confirming the solution mechanism for ORR through an unprecedented analysis of the electrolyte molecule using operando Raman, supported by simulations. Lithium‐oxygen batteries show promising energy storage potential with high theoretical energy density; however, further investigation of chemical reactions is required. In this study, experimental Raman and theoretical analyzes are performed for a Li‐O2 battery with LiClO4/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) electrolyte and carbon cathode to understand the role of intermediate species in the reactional mechanism of the cell using a high donor number solvent. Operando Raman results reveal reversible changes in the DMSO bands, in addition to the formation and decomposition of Li2O2. On discharge, a decrease in DMSO polarizability is observed and bands of DMSO‐Li+‐anion interactions are evidenced and supported by ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Molecular dynamics (MD) force field simulations and operando Raman show that DMSO interacts with LiO2(sol), highlighting the stability of the electrolyte compared to the interaction with reactive O2− . On charging, the presence of Li+ indicates the formation of a lithium‐deficient phase, followed by the release of Li+ and oxygen. Therefore, this study contributes to understanding the discharge/charge chemistry of a Li‐O2 cell, employing a common carbon cathode and DMSO electrolyte. The combination of a simple characterization technique in operando mode and theoretical studies provides essential information on the mechanism of Li‐O2 system.

Abstract:LiPF6 as a dominant lithium salt of electrolyte is widely used in commercial rechargeable lithium-ion batteries due to its well-balanced properties, including high solubility in organic solvents, good electrochemical stability, and high ionic conductivity. However, it suffers from several undesirable properties, such as high moisture sensitivity, thermal instability, and high cost. To address these issues, herein, we propose an electron-donation modulation (EDM) rule for the development of low-cost, sustainable, and electrochemically compatible LiNO3-based electrolytes. We employ high donor-number solvents (HDNSs) with strong electron-donation ability to dissolve LiNO3, while low donor-number solvents (LDNSs) with weak electron-donation ability are used to regulate the solvation structure to stabilize the electrolytes. As an example, we design the LiNO3-DMSO@PC electrolyte, where DMSO acts as an HDNS and PC serves as an LDNS. This electrolyte exhibits excellent electrochemical compatibility with graphite anodes, as well as the LiFePO4 and LiCoO2 cathodes, leading to stable cycling over 200 cycles. Through spectroscopy analyses and theoretical calculation, we uncover the underlying mechanism responsible for the stabilization of these electrolytes. Our findings provide valuable insights into the preparation of LiNO3-based electrolytes using the EDM rule, opening new avenues for the development of advanced electrolytes with versatile functions for sustainable rechargeable batteries.

A Unique Hybrid Quasi-Solid-State Electrolyte for Li-O2 Batteries with Improved Cycle Life and Safety

Abstract:In the context of the development of electric vehicle to solve the contemporary energy and environmental issues, the possibility of pushing future application of Li-O2 batteries as a power source for electric vehicles is particularly attractive. However, safety concerns, mainly derived from the use of flammable organic liquid electrolytes, become a major bottleneck for the strategically crucial applications of Li-O2 batteries. To overcome this issue, rechargeable solid-state Li-O2 batteries with enhanced safety is regarded as an appealing candidate. In this study, a hybrid quasi-solid-state electrolyte combing a polymer electrolyte with a ceramic electrolyte is first designed and explored for Li-O2 batteries. The proposed rechargeable solid-state Li-O2 battery delivers improved cycle life (>100 cycles) and safety. The feasibility study demonstrates that the hybrid quasi-solid-state electrolytes could be employed as a promising alternative strategy for the development of rechargeable Li-O2 batteries, hence encouraging more efforts devoted to explore other hybrid solid-state electrolytes for Li-O2 batteries upon future application.

Abstract:Recently, the lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery has attracted much interest due to its ultrahigh theoretical energy density. However, its potential application is limited by an unstable electrolyte system, low round-trip efficiency, and poor cyclic performance. In this study, we present a new electrolyte based on N,N′-dimethylpropyleneurea (DMPU) applied for the Li-O2 battery. This electrolyte possesses high ionic conductivity and achieves a low discharge/charge voltage gap of 0.6 V, which is mainly due to the possible one-electron charge transfer mechanism. The introduction of the antioxidant butylatedhydroxytoluene (BHT) as an additive stabilizes the superoxide radical by chemical adsorption and improves the cyclic performance remarkably. Thus, this new electrolyte system may be one of the candidates for Li-O2 batteries. © 2017 American Chemical Society.
Imidazolium bromide: A tri-functional additive for rechargeable Li-O2 batteries

Abstract:High energy density lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries require soluble catalysts to accelerate the kinetics of oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER), and require SEI forming additives to protect lithium metal anode from side reaction with solvents, reduced oxygen species and soluble catalysts. In this study, a tri-functional additives 1-methyl, 3-benzyl, 1H imidazolium bromide (IMPBr) is dissolved in the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-based electrolyte to solve the problems of the slow dynamic process of ORR and OER, and protect the lithium anode by suppressing the dendrite formation in O2 atmosphere. During discharging, IMP+ has a strong binding ability to the intermediate product O2−, and Br− is highly associated with Li+, helping drive the solvation mechanism. During charging, Br− mediates the decomposition of battery discharge products and reduces the charge overpotential. Meanwhile, the positively charged IMP+ can be attracted to the surface of the anode via electric attraction, in situ forming a stable SEI layer to prevent DMSO, Br3–, and Br2 from attacking the lithium metal and growth of lithium dendrites. The synergy effect of the IMP+ and Br– improves the cycle and rate performance of the Li-O2 battery.

Stable Lithium Oxygen Batteries Enabled by Solvent‐diluent Interaction in N,N‐dimethylacetamide‐based Electrolytes

Abstract:In the pursuit of next-generation ultrahigh-energy-density Li–O2 batteries, it is imperative to develop an electrolyte with stability against the strong oxidation environments. N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) is a recognized solvent known for its robust resistance to the highly reactive reduced oxygen species, yet its application in Li–O2 batteries has been constrained due to its poor compatibility with the Li metal anode. In this study, a rationally selected hydrofluoroether diluent, methyl nonafluorobutyl ether (M3), has been introduced into the DMA-based electrolyte to construct a localized high concentration electrolyte. The stable –CH3 and C–F bonds within the M3 structure could not only augment the fundamental properties of the electrolyte but also fortify its resilience against attacks from O2– and 1O2. Additionally, the strong electron-withdrawing groups (–F) presented in the M3 diluent could facilitate coordination with the electron-donating groups (–CH3) in the DMA solvent. This intermolecular interaction promotes more alignment of Li+-anions with a small amount of M3 addition, leading to the construction of an anion-derived inorganic-rich SEI that enhances the stability of the Li anode. As a result, the Li–O2 batteries with the DMA/M3 electrolyte exhibit superior cycling performance at both 30 °C (359th) and –10 °C (120th).

Concentrated Electrolyte for the Sodium-Oxygen Battery: Solvation Structure and Improved Cycle Life

Abstract:Alkali metal-oxygen batteries are of great interests for energy storage because of their unparalleled theoretical energy densities. Particularly attractive is the emerging Na-O-2 battery because of the formation of superoxide as the discharge product. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a promising solvent for this battery but its instability towards Na makes it impractical in the Na-O-2 battery. Herein we report the enhanced stability of Na in DMSO solutions containing concentrated sodium trifluoromethanesulfonimide (NaTFSI) salts (>3molkg(-1)). Raman spectra of NaTFSI/DMSO electrolytes and abinitio molecular dynamics simulation reveal the Na+ solvation number in DMSO and the formation of Na(DMSO)(3)(TFSI)-like solvation structure. The majority of DMSO molecules solvating Na+ in concentrated solutions reduces the available free DMSO molecules that can react with Na and renders the TFSI anion decomposition, which protects Na from reacting with the electrolyte. Using these concentrated electrolytes, Na-O-2 batteries can be cycled forming sodium superoxide (NaO2) as the sole discharge product with improved long cycle life, highlighting the beneficial role of concentrated electrolytes for Na-based batteries.
Molecular-docking electrolytes enable high-voltage lithium battery chemistries

Abstract:Ideal rechargeable lithium battery electrolytes should promote the Faradaic reaction near the electrode surface while mitigating undesired side reactions. Yet, conventional electrolytes usually show sluggish kinetics and severe degradation due to their high desolvation energy and poor compatibility. Here we propose an electrolyte design strategy that overcomes the limitations associated with Li salt dissociation in non-coordinating solvents to enable fast, stable Li chemistries. The non-coordinating solvents are activated through favourable hydrogen bond interactions, specifically Fδ--Hδ+ or Hδ+-Oδ-, when blended with fluorinated benzenes or halide alkane compounds. These intermolecular interactions enable a dynamic Li+-solvent coordination process, thereby promoting the fast Li+ reaction kinetics and suppressing electrode side reactions. Utilizing this molecular-docking electrolyte design strategy, we have developed 25 electrolytes that demonstrate high Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiencies and promising capacity retentions in both full cells and pouch cells. This work supports the use of the molecular-docking solvation mechanism for designing electrolytes with fast Li+ kinetics for high-voltage Li batteries.
Low-Polarization Lithium-Oxygen Battery Using [DEME][TFSI] Ionic Liquid Electrolyte

Abstract:The room-temperature molten salt mixture of N,N-diethyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)-N-methylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide ([DEME][TFSI]) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt is herein reported as electrolyte for application in Li-O2 batteries. The [DEME][TFSI]-LiTFSI solution is studied in terms of ionic conductivity, viscosity, electrochemical stability, and compatibility with lithium metal at 30 °C, 40 °C, and 60 °C. The electrolyte shows suitable properties for application in Li-O2 battery, allowing a reversible, low-polarization discharge-charge performance with a capacity of about 13 Ah g-1carbon in the positive electrode and coulombic efficiency approaching 100 %. The reversibility of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is demonstrated by ex situ XRD and SEM studies. Furthermore, the study of the cycling behavior of the Li-O2 cell using the [DEME][TFSI]-LiTFSI electrolyte at increasing temperatures (from 30 to 60 °C) evidences enhanced energy efficiency together with morphology changes of the deposited species at the working electrode. In addition, the use of carbon-coated Zn0.9 Fe0.1 O (TMO-C) lithium-conversion anode in an ionic-liquid-based Li-ion/oxygen configuration is preliminarily demonstrated.
Uncovering the Electrolyte-Dependent Transport Mechanism of LiO2 in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs) offer extremely high theoretical energy density and are therefore strong contenders for bringing conventional batteries into the next generation. To avoid deactivation and passivation of the electrode due to the gradual covering of the surface by discharge products, electrolytes with high donor number (DN) are becoming increasingly popular in LOBs. However, the mechanism of this electrolyte-assisted discharge process remains unclear in many aspects, including the lithium superoxide (LiO2) intermediate transportation mechanism and stability at both electrode/electrolyte interfaces and in bulk electrolytes. Here, we performed a systematic Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD)-level investigation of the LiO2 solvation reactions at two interfaces with high- or low-DN electrolytes (dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or acetonitrile (CH3CN), respectively), followed by examinations of stability and condensation once the LiO2 monomers are solvated. Release of partial discharge product LiO2 is found to be energetically favorable into DMSO from the Co3O4 cathode with a small energy barrier. However, in the presence of CH3CN electrolyte, the release of LiO2 from the electrode surface is found to be energetically unfavorable. Dissolved LiO2(sol) clusters in bulk DMSO solvents are found to be more favorable to dimerize and agglomerate into a toroidal shape rather than to decompose, which avoids the emergence of strong oxidant ions (O2-) and preserves the system stability. This study provides two complete molecular-level pathways (solution and surface) from first-principles understanding of LOBs, offering guidance for future selection and design of electrode catalysts and solvents.

Abstract:Li-O2 batteries are promising energy storage devices with ultra-high theoretical energy density. However, in practice they show severe capacity fading and limited cycle life, meaning that more suitable electrolytes are urgently needed. Here, solvents are combined with high donor number and low donor number, and a Li salt to produce a new local strong solvation effect electrolyte. High discharge capacity and good cycling performance are achieved when the optimized electrolyte is used in a Li-O2 battery. The optimized electrolyte inhibits side reactions within the battery and facilitates stable solid electrolyte interphase film formation on the surfaces of Li anode. This work opens a new route for the design of high-performance electrolytes to increase both capacity and cycle life of Li-O2 batteries.

A novel strategy to improve the electrochemical properties of in-situ polymerized 1,3-dioxolane electrolyte in lithium metal batteries

Abstract:The application of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) is anticipated to enhance the safety performance of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, the progress of SSEs has been hindered by the unstable electrode-electrolyte interfaces (EEIs). In this study, in-situ polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) is employed for the preparation of SSEs, with the addition of tributyl borate (TBB) to establish stable EEIs, particularly under high-voltage conditions. On one hand, the addition of TBB promotes the dissociation of lithium salts and increases the concentration of free Li+, resulting in an increase in room temperature ionic conductivity to 1.13 × 10-4 S cm-1 and an improvement in the Li+ transference number to 0.69 for the prepared poly-DOL electrolytes (PDE-TBB). Benefiting from the enhanced Li+ transport, the Li/PDE-TBB/Li symmetric cell exhibits a cycle life exceeding 1,000 h with a low polarization voltage as low as 12 mV, and the Li/PDE-TBB/LiFePO4 cell demonstrates exceptional cyclic stability over 800 cycles at 1C, with a coulombic efficiency exceeding 99.8 % and a capacity retention of 89.6 %. On the other hand, PDE-TBB exhibits improved stability under high-voltage conditions and the capacity to establish robust boron-rich cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) on the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) surface, thereby enhancing the structural stability of cathode materials and ensuring exceptional cycling performance of Li/PDE-TBB/NCM811cell. This work presents a promising strategy for developing novel ether-based SSEs suitable for high-voltage lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:The rechargeable lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries suffer from not only the low practical capacity and high overpotential at the oxygen cathode but also the low lithium utilization and dendrite growth of the Li metal. In this work, by coupling the dual mediator catholyte and the carbonate-based anolyte for the high specific capacity Si anode, we propose a hybrid electrolyte design for the fabrication of Li-ion O-2 batteries. A single-ion-conducting lithiated Nafion membrane is introduced to bridge the two electrolyte systems. Benefiting from the restraint of mediator shuttling and the uniform solid electrolyte interface film of silicon anode, the hybrid electrolyte Li-ion O-2 battery exhibits high reversible capacity, low overpotential, and improved cycling stability. Beyond the Li-ion O-2 battery, the hybrid electrolyte design shows great potential for the development of stable battery systems with high energy efficiency.
