Abstract:Extractives in the high-yield-pulp have significant influence on pulp properties, particularly the pulp bleachability. In this paper, the contents of methanol extractives in three types of high yield pulps, pine (Pinus), bamboo (Neosinocalamus) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus urophylla) sulfonated chemimechanical pulps (SCMP), as well as their hydrogen peroxide-bleached pulps were determined. Then the main components of methanol extractives in unbleached and bleached pulps were analyzed, using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry with high temperature column (DB-5HT), and the changes of various types of substances in the methanol extractives during the peroxide-bleaching process were discussed. Results showed that the contents of methanol extractives in the unbleached pine, bamboo and eucalyptus SCMP were 0.57%, 0.40%, 0.30%, and 0.35%, 0.37%, 0.28% in their peroxide-bleached pulps respectively. The contents of various substances in methanol extractives of the three types SCMP were quite different. There were much more monoaryl phenols and resin acids in unbleached pine pulp than the others, while the amount of steroid substances in unbleached bamboo pulp was the largest. After hydrogen peroxide bleaching, the contents of methanol extractives had small changes, except in the pine pulp with a dramatic drop in the amount of monoaryl phenols and resin acids. The change of the substances in bamboo pulp extractives during bleaching was small, especially the sterols with a removal rate of 33.3%, followed by fatty acids of 30.0%.
